Volkswagen UP! New Car for India from Volkswagen had its debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany. Volkswagen UP! is expected to hit Indian roads by late next year. It’s expected that both variants both petrol & diesel, will be launched India simultaneously. The fact that the engine of the up runs in the rear has a decisive influence on its exterior design. That is because the up! Has no classic radiator grille. It forges links to the Beetle.

Major design characteristics includes the headlamps which take an inward and diagonal line, between them lies the horizontally arranged air vents, the Volkswagen logo (as one of the few details kept in chrome), the tailgate that extends far forward and the smooth bumper with a circumferential black stripe.

The tailgate was produced using a transparent material beneath which integrated the high layout of the taillights. Another new visible feature is the location of the VW logo in the tailgate is placed behind glass and gets illuminated when the light is on. About design of wheels, the wheels are flush with the sporty outboard wheel arches and side skirts. The radial design of the wheels and surfaces extending right up to the edge of the rim make the 18-inch wheels appear significantly larger than they actually are.

Volkswagen UP accounts for a large spacy interior. The Hatchback offers more space than any other car of similar length (3.45 meters) and width (1.63 meters).Except the driver’s seat, all other seats can be folded and removed providing large extra cargo space. Volkswagen UP also provides high level of seating comfort that Volkswagen always provides. Similar to a self-inflating air mattress, air can be sucked out of the seat surfaces via a valve. This means that the seats can be adjusted 1:1 to the body anatomies of the occupants who have just taken a seat.

The price details of the Volkswagen UP are targeted a low $7,500 price point. The car belongs to the B segment contains a 1200cc, 3 Cylinder petrol engine provides a max power of 72 Bhp.

Volkswagen opening their first plant in India in 2009, they have aggressive growth plans in that market. By 2012 they could be building as many as 240,000 cars a year there with the production version of the up making up a large share of those. In addition to the up! VW will also build the next generation Polo at the plant in Chakan. Although building the micro-cars in India for the local market would seem logical, there is also the possibility that they will export the cars from there to the US market.

Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop

Nokia rocked the world this morning by introducing its spin on the laptop, called the Booklet 3G. If you're the rude sort (like us) you could call it a fancy netbook, what with its Atom processor and 10.1-inch display, but that screen is higher res than your average Eee, and it also sports integrated 3G wireless and a hot-swappable SIM card, so it's definitely trying to define its own niche. It looks to be running Windows 7, which isn't particularly netbooky, and also has integrated A-GPS with a copy of Ovi Maps, HDMI output, a rated 12 hour battery life, and the usual Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, all in a 2cm (.78 inch), 2.7lb aluminum body that's understated, sophisticated, and should make most Nokia fans very happy -- Nokia fans who are looking for a tiny laptop, anyway. There's a fancy promotional video after the break, and while we don't have any anticipated release date or price just yet, we'll be learning more at Nokia World 09 on September 2. We promise not to make too many Foleo references.

Napkin PC concept

Check out this very clever Napkin PC designed by Avery Holleman that is perfect for collaborating designers. Using e-ink and RF technology it allows designers to draw in colour and skip the very tedious stage of transferring the sketch into a digital format.
Avery has done a great job illustrating the design in a scenario based presentation, so much so that I’ll let the images do the talking.

Overview of Design:

The Napkin PC is innovative because of its multi-flexibility. It can have multiple users, multiple interfaces, and multiple configurations. It breaks the PC down to only the interface— a pen and a space— and then gives you a multitude of both so you can let your creativity run wild.

Scenarios of UseThere are two new usage scenarios delivered by the PC. First is the brainstorming workflow. Creativity that normally starts on paper and whiteboards goes instead directly into the PC without the user changing their behavior. This creativity is richer because of the innumerable software tools and resources available on every Napkin interface. It can also be shared, compiled, and compared instantly for a smooth, speedy workflow.

The second scenario is a replacement for printing. Instead of ever putting ink on paper, the interfaces themselves instantly become “prints” when power is removed. They would then be used just like a print, pinned up, handed around, reviewed, etc. When the print is no longer needed the interface is simply returned to the base station as a fresh Napkin.

Technical Aspects:

The key technologies are full color e-Paper, multi-touch input, Inductive power circuits, and high speed RF wireless connections. The e-Paper is key because of its low power consumption, thinness and flexibility, and ability to retain an image without power. Multi-touch is simply the future of intuitive input that makes the PC fun, fast, and easy to use.

The inductive power circuits are crucial because they allow wireless power transfer and make the interface Napkin simple and inexpensive enough to be used in large numbers. High speed RF continues to keep everything wireless and intuitively seamless.

Ecology:

The environmental sustainability of the PC is most innovative with the Napkin interface. It is the most numerous component and the one most likely to need replacing due to wear over a few years. Therefore it is beneficial to make it easy to recycle which is accomplished by powering it with an inductive circuit. This eliminates a hard-to-recycle internal battery.
The second, and likely more impactful, innovation is the use of the interface as an instant “print.” This eliminates the need for printers, paper, and ink, which are used in large amounts during the creative process.

Dell ADAMO ... Thinner as MAC

If the rumors are accurate, Dell will soon launch a new laptop to compete with ultra-thin models from Apple, Lenovo and others. So just how thin would this new “Adamo” laptop need to be to lure some of those premium buyers over to Dell? Here’s how the competition measures up:

However, how Dell came up with the name "Adamo" remains a mystery. Adamo in Latin means to find love or pleasure, which points to Dell trying to invoke the lust factor for the product.The naming convention is interesting on another count.

Based on the competition, the Adamo will almost certainly measure 0.7 inches or less. But perhaps Dell will really try to shake things up with an aggressively tapered design like that of the MacBook Air. The problem with this approach is that while the MacBook Air doesn’t have an internal DVD drive, several of the Windows competitors do. So it will be interesting to see just how radical Dell is willing to get with this new model.

My guess is that Dell will give it a decent set of features (13.3-inch LED-backlit display, internal DVD) but skip the more esoteric stuff such as SSDs and instead come in at a lower price.

Dell earlier leaked out accessories available on its Web site for Adamo Thirteen, which it later deleted. Dell listed a 45-watt AC adapter, which is similar to the 45-watt MagSafe power adapter used in the MacBook Air.

Dell also leaked a DVD+/-RW slot drive. Few ultraportable laptops build in an optical drive because of size constraints, with one exception being Fujitsu's LifeBook P8020 laptop.

The company also listed a "DC to DC auto/air adapter" accessory, an external hard drive and Displayport HDMI and VGA video dongles for the Adamo Thirteen.

No details, specs, or prices were given (except that its design includes anodized aluminum and glass .... it will be avilable in two colors silver & black), but don't expect this one to be on Walmart's shelves any time soon, despite rumors that it is supposed to be a price-friendly competitor for Apple's Air.

Nokia's concept mobile phone -- Morph

Nokia and the University of Cambridge on Monday introduced a nanotechnology concept called Morph, which demonstrates how future mobile devices could be flexible enough to transform into different shapes.

Morph, jointly developed by the Nokia Research Center and the University of Cambridge, entails stretchable and flexible materials, transparent electronics, and self-cleaning surfaces that will give nanotechnology ultimate functionality, according to Nokia.

Imagine a self cleaning communication device that will analyse air pollution for you and will fit into your shirt pocket without feeling bulky.

With nanotechnology, anything and everything seems possible. Nanotechnology can benefit the following areas of mobility development for the future.

Innovative design ----- The Chameleon truck

Nature didn’t make many mistakes with organic forms and wise designers like Haishang Deng understand solves for our problems can often be found just by studying what nature has already done. Enter the Chameleon Truck.

This bionic cargo transport uses an innovative segmented body remarkably like that of a centipede. This enables the truck to adjust its size to the cargo load. The resilient soft tarpaulin shelled body is strong enough to protect its cargo but also absorbs impacts in case of accidents. As an added benefit fuel savings abound since the truck’s weight is slashed in half.

Another innovative design feature is the drive cockpit which cranes over its cargo instead of being built into the frame like most vehicles today. This enables automated front loading without the need for additional support.

Toyota IQ concept : A small & beautiful car

Toyota is touting the iQ as the ultimate refined mode of transportation and at less than 118 inches in length, it’s certainly small enough to be a devoted city runabout.

The iQ is called a 3+1, meaning it is capable of carrying up to three adults along with a child or luggage in comfort.

Toyota is especially proud of the six engineering innovations it utilized to maximized interior space in the iQ in addition to the long wheelbase of nearly 79 inches, which minimizes overhangs but maximizes the space between the wheels. The first includes a newly developed compact differential, alone said to be responsible for over 100mm of added length in the cabin in comparison to the B-segment Toyota Yaris.

The rest includes rear-angled shocks and a flat fuel tank under the seats, a smaller heater / air conditioner unit that’s just as efficient, a center take-off steering column, an asymmetrical dashboard as well as slimmer seats claimed to contribute about 1.5 inches in length to the interior. Despite its small size, the iQ received a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing.

“We came to the conclusion that, in order to ensure a sustainable future, there was a need for a radical change in vehicle packaging. We needed to create a break-through, away

from the traditional belief that small is basic,” said Kazuo Okamoto, Executive Vice President in charge of Research and Development at Toyota.

The pushed-forward dashboard features temperature controls with an LCD display, as well as a 5.8-inch screen for satellite navigation system.

The iQ showed at Geneva sat on 16-inch wheels and powerplant choices will include two gasoline and one diesel engine. Toyota expects to sell 100,000 units of the iQ in its first year of production globally.

Maruti suzuki splash in 2008

Maruti Suzuki Motor Corporation, the world leader in the compact car segment, introduces Splash, an all-new compact model aimed at building on the success of the loveable Swift. Following Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4, Splash is the fourth all new Suzuki model within just three years, and it epitomises Suzuki’s ‘Way of Life!’ philosophy, underpinning its strategy of building cars that excite customers all over the world.

Splash for Europe will be built in Esztergom, Hungary, by Magyar Suzuki Corporation, a Suzuki subsidiary that already builds Swift, SX4 and Ignis. Suzuki will also be manufacturing the second generation Agila for Opel/Vauxhall at this plant. With identical engineering, the main visual differences between Splash and Agila include different styling at front (bonnet, wings, headlamps and bumper) and rear (tailgate, tail lights and bumper).

Suzuki is targeting annual sales of approximately 60,000 units throughout Europe. Opened in 1992, the Esztergom factory has produced over one million Suzukis to date.

Splash cannot be considered to be the successor of the Wagon R+, the enlarged version of the Wagon R which in 1993 was originally developed for the Japanese market, and later also introduced in Europe. “Based on completely different criteria, Splash’s design is mainly tailored to the requirements of European customers,” explains Toshihiro Suzuki, the project’s Chief Engineer. Splash comes with attractive styling, compact dimensions, responsive handling, very good build quality and a high degree of environmental compatibility.

While the focus of Phase One of Suzuki’s “World-Strategy” was on sportiness, Splash is the first model in Phase Two which will focus on young families as its main target group. Apart from fresh and sporty styling, young couples with and without children attach great importance to attributes such as spaciousness, flexibility and economy.

Rather than a purely functional box shape, the designers have endeavoured to provide Splash with styling that lives up to its name, epitomising youthfulness, freshness and zesty, energetic performance.

Styling and the design philosophy

The styling team for Splash was headed by Akira Kamio (44), who also played a big part in the styling of Swift. As early as 2003, he began to analyse the necessary characteristics for a future European mini-MPV.

It soon became clear that whilst it should not look like a shrunken version of a full-sized MPV this car must keep all of its advantages: the high seating position and resulting good all-round visibility, the pleasant feeling of space and great flexibility allowing the rear compartment to be easily turned into a substantial stowage space.

In order to get up-to-date information, a group of 10 Suzuki designers from Japan travelled to Germany in January, 2004 to spend a period of six months there. They analysed European trends in cars, fashion, lifestyle and design.

Out of their impressions and findings, they finally distilled three models, which, in so called ‘car clinics’, were then presented to audiences of owners of compact cars and small MPVs. In the end, these audiences favoured the model offering the optimum combination of dynamic sportiness with youthful styling, implying a positive attitude to life and maximum suitability for everyday and recreational use.

At the Paris Motor Show in late September 2006, Suzuki presented ‘Project Splash’, a concept car showcasing a taste of the styling of the future production-version Splash. The extremely positive response of the audience confirmed to Akira Kamio and his team that they had taken the right path for Splash. One thing is certain: Splash will be a major player in the mini-MPV segment. While ideally suited to tight parking conditions, the 3.72 m-long car nevertheless offers sufficient space for up to five occupants plus plenty of sports and leisure equipment.

Apart from attractive styling, a cute minicar also requires the best engineering. This includes safe and precise handling, outstanding ride comfort, a high degree of environmental compatibility, and optimum passive and active safety. Hence Splash uses a 30 mm shorter wheelbase version of the Swift’s platform, Suzuki’s current best seller.

The chassis, steering and brakes were adapted to the new parameters in extensive tests, which included tens of thousands of miles of testing over various types of European roads, from English cobblestones, through twisty southern Spanish tracks to fast German autobahns.

Choice of three engines

Splash will make its debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September, with sales commencing in Spring, 2008. Customers will have the choice of three engines – two petrol and a diesel. The petrol units are 100% Suzuki designs, a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit producing 65 PS (48 kW) and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine developing 86 PS (63 kW). Both are of advanced four-valve-per-cylinder design, offering a sophisticated combination of smoothness, low-end torque and fuel efficiency.

Diesel fans can choose the 1.3-litre common-rail direct injection engine available with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Producing 75 PS (55 kW), this 4-cylinder unit is manufactured by Suzuki at its new diesel engine plant in India under licence from Fiat Group Automobiles.

All three engines are combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 86 PS petrol version can also be ordered with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Given the stricter standards now being demanded with respect to environmental compatibility, all engines are Euro4-compliant, with CO2 emissions between 120 and 140 g/km in combination with manual transmissions.

Safety

Suzuki has paid great attention to safety measures in the design of Splash. Active safety features include ABS, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and ESP. Passive safety features include six airbags (dual front side and curtain airbags), a crash-optimised, rigid passenger cell, plus seatbelt-force limiters and seatbelt pretensioners for the front seats. For enhanced pedestrian protection the front end of Splash is fitted with energy-absorbing structures carscoop.

Expect in 2008 in India

We can expect this car to be launched in india by this year end.

The engineering shows a judicious use of space. For example, the rear seats of the Splash can be folded back to make a flat load floor and a compartment below for storage. Cute and affordable, the Splash is very likely to make a huge splash in the Indian market.

Spectacular sky show on February 2008

During the last days of January and the first days of February the two brightest planets seen on Earth will appear close together in the dawn twilight of the southeast sky, and the waning crescent Moon will drop by, too.

The most spectacular celestial sights over the next couple of weeks are reserved for the early morning sky. Two bright planets will converge, and then be joined by the moon.

Such an eloquent description certainly fits our current morning sky, for these final days of January and the first days of February will be an exceptional time for predawn sky watchers with a beautiful pairing of the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter. They will appear closest together in the dawn sky of Friday, Feb. 1, and a few mornings later, the waning crescent moon will later drop by to join them.

Dazzling "double planet"

For the past several months, dazzling Venus has been prominent in our morning sky. And about a week ago, brilliant Jupiter also began to emerge from out of the glare of the Sun.

The two planets are currently rising out of the east-southeast horizon about two hours before sunrise.

From now through the end of January, the gap between the two will noticeably close, until on Feb. 1 they'll be separated by just over one-half degree, which is roughly the apparent width of the moon (The width of your fist, held at arm's length roughly corresponds to 10 degrees). Jupiter will shine brilliantly at magnitude -1.9, yet it will appear only 1/7 as bright as Venus, which will gleam at magnitude -4.0.

Together they will make for a spectacular "double planet" low in the dawn twilight. In the mornings thereafter they will appear to slowly separate, but before they have a chance to get too far apart the moon will join the picture.

Celestial summit meeting

At last quarter (half) phase on Jan. 30, the moon will stand alone, high toward the south at sunrise. But with each passing morning, as it wanes to a slender crescent, it will shift toward the east, ultimately into the same region of the sky as our two planets.

Early on Sunday morning, Feb. 3, the moon will sit well off to the west (right) of the planets. On the following morning, Monday, Feb. 4, the show will reach its peak when, about 45 minutes before sunrise, Venus, Jupiter and the moon — the three brightest objects of the night sky — will form a striking isosceles triangle, with the two planets 3 degrees apart and the moon marking the vertex of the triangle just over 5 degrees below the "dynamic duo."

Imagine the astrological significance that the ancients might have ascribed to a celestial summit meeting such as this!

You might want to check your southeast horizon in advance to make sure that there are no tall trees or buildings that might obstruct your view of the moon which will be sitting very low to the horizon.

Like a painting, this celestial tableau might, at first glance may appear rather flat and one-dimensional. But by gazing at this scene long enough, our minds can perhaps picture these objects strung out across the solar system, along our line of sight as they really are.

Beyond our moon — figuratively a stone's throw away at 247,000 miles (397,000 kilometers) — we first reach Venus, about 510 times farther out, or 126 million miles (203 million kilometers) from Earth. The lesser gem flanking Venus — Jupiter, largest of all the planets — is nearly 4 and a half times more distant than Venus at a distance of 560 million miles (901 million kilometers).

Generally speaking, at least for the immediate future, conjunctions between Venus and Jupiter will come in pairs. The first conjunction takes place in the morning sky, followed about 10 months later by another in the evening sky. Then, after about two and a half years, Venus and Jupiter are again in conjunction, again in the morning sky.

When Venus and Jupiter next get together, it will be in the evening sky late next fall, on Dec. 1. After that, we'll have to wait until May 2011 (morning sky) and Mar. 2012 (evening sky) for the next set of Venus-Jupiter conjunctions.

The CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car equipped with Honda's original gas-electric hybrid system which achieves both clean performance and a high level of torque. Exterior design:

Designed to be 'Futuristic and Dynamic', the CR-Z combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high-performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps ensure better rearward visibility. Design details emphasizing the CR-Z's advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights patterned after luminous bodies to convey a sharp impression, and jauntyfin-shaped sub-lights. Large, 19-inch wheels are ready for dynamic driving performace.

Interior design:

The key words for the CR-Z's interior design are 'Hi-tech and Sporty'. The goal was to create an all-new sporty interior that fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of the drive. Mesh material on a simple framework construction is used throughout the interior to convey a light, sophisticated image without being oppressive. It’s the name Honda has given its production fuel cell car, and it’s a name you’ll want to remember. After years of having fuel cell prototypes in the hands of fleets and even paying customers, Honda makes good on its commitment to a hydrogen future. The 2008 NewDelhi Auto Show was the venue for the introduction of the FCX , an Accord-sized sedan with styling based on the FCX Concept from a few years ago that promises to “enable levels of performance room, comfort and dynamic styling previous unattainable in a fuel cell car.”

Why it Matters

Notice the price of gas lately? Sure, hydrogen isn’t cheaper – yet – but some day those oil wells will be sucking air, and so will 99.99999 percent of cars on the road today. Hydrogen is abundant, but difficult to get at. It’s no news that hydrogen holds great promise for the future as a fuel. But exactly what the future might look like was a mystery until this morning, when Honda’s FCX was unveiled. As it turns out, it looks good, and promises to be good for those who can get one.

What’s Under the Hood

The V Flow fuel cell powering the FCX features several advances over the one in the smaller FCX prototype that you may have seen before, the one that looks a little like an old Civic. It will be the first production car to feature lithium ion batteries, which gives it a pack that’s 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the one in the prototype. The overall powertrain, including the fuel cell and electric motor, is 40 percent smaller, putting it roughly the size of a hybrid powertrain. The output is impressive: 100 kw (that’s 134 horsepower to you and me) and a 270 mile range on a tank of fuel. It’s the equivalent of 68 mpg.

What it Looks Like

The FCX looks a lot like the Concept that Honda debuted two years ago at the Tokyo Motor Show. Obvious concessions have been made to production of course, but overall it’s a clean, sharp looking sedan that falls somewhere between the Civic and the Accord on the Honda styling tree. But while somewhat futuristic, it’s also conventional enough that it won’t scare off buyers who don’t want to feel like George Jetson. The fuel cell components are distributed evenly through the car for better weight distribution.

What’s Inside

The interior is a departure for Honda. Rather than the usual conservative lines, the FCX features a “floating” dash and center stack, which seem at first to be disconnected from the car. It’s a cool effect. Dig deeper though and the control layout is quite conventional, and any Honda driver will likely feel right at home behind the wheel. Because customers will be paying $600 per month on a lease, it’s also more luxurious than a conventional Honda, with rich materials and upscale features. The interior materials deserve special mention: Like the rest of the FCX, they have been designed with the environment in mind, using Honda Bio-Fabric, a plant based material that offers carbon dioxide reductions in production.

What Honda Says

As you can imagine, Honda has a lot to say. According to Tetsuo Iwamura, American Honda president and CEO, “The FCX is a shining symbol of the progress we’ve made with fuel cell vehicles and of our belief in the promise of this technology. Step by step, with continuous effort, commitment and focus, we are working to overcome obstacles to the mass-market potential of zero-emissions hydrogen fuel cell automobiles.” Honda also notes that the FCX will be available for $600 per month three-year leases in Southern California, where there are three hydrogen refueling stations available. It will also cover collision insurance and maintenance for the life of the lease.

What We Think

Honda one upped everyone else with the promise of a production fuel-cell car, and by making good on that promise, it may even out-green Toyota in the near future. There are obstacles of course: you can’t just run down to the corner gas station and get hydrogen, you can’t go as far as you can on a tank of fuel as you can in a regular car, and who knows what sort of maintenance problems there may be. Still, this is a promising car, and seeing it is as close as we’ll probably get to a crystal ball view of the future.

FCX's concept

At the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, Honda announced that it would make a production version of the concept FCX it had shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. On 25 September 2006 this new version was unveiled. The updated four-door sedan version looks much sleeker and more futuristic, and has a high focus on comfort and interior space. It has a much more spacious interior with a mixture of plastic, wood and leather.[6] Production is expected to begin in 2008 in Japan and the U.S.[7] The production version will closely resemble the concept, although it is unknown if some of the concept's more radical features, such as a tilting instrument panel, will be included.

According to Honda, the new fuel-cell stack is 20% smaller, 30% lighter and has a higher output of 100 kW (129 hp). The new powerplant is 180 kg lighter, 40% smaller in volume and has a high energy efficiency of 60%, compared with 20% for most internal combustion engines, 30% for most hybrid powerplants and 50% for the previous generation FCX.[8]

The new powerplant utilizes three electric motors: one front-drive motor with an output of up to 80 kW, this motor's shaft is coaxial with the gearbox for a more compact front-end, and two smaller motors with a maximum output of 25 kW driving one of the rear wheels each. This layout makes the FCX technically an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The updated FCX has a maximum speed of 160 km/h (100 mph).

The new FCX utilizes several interesting new features. The new V Flow fuel cell stack can operate at temperatures as low as −30 °C. This is achieved by allowing the gas to flow vertically in the fuel cell stack. The tanks can store up to 5 kg (171 litres) of hydrogen at a pressure of 350 atmospheres, thanks to the new hydrogen absorption materials used. This allows a longer range of up to 350 miles (570 km).

To support the hydrogen fuel-cell technology, Honda also introduced the Home Energy Station (HES). This home solution can convert natural gas to electricity, heat and hydrogen to refuel fuel-cell vehicles. This allows consumers to refuel vehicles with hydrogen at home, important until hydrogen stations become widespread. Alternatively, the hydrogen can be used in the HES's built-in hydrogen fuel cell, providing up to 5 kW of normal or backup electricity and/or hot water for the home. According to Honda, this solution is highly efficient and reduces running costs of electricity, gas and vehicle fuel by up to 50%.

Dilip chhabria's DC: S

Dilip Chhabria's firm DC Designs has launched the DC S sports car under it's own brand at the Auto Expo 2008. The DC S is an inhouse design and has a 3 litre V6 twin turbo engine which belts out a stomping 440 bhp @ 6100 rpm. This power lends the DC S with a a high power to weight ratio which enables it to accelerate to 100 kmph in 3.7 seconds and hit a top whack of 300+ kmph. DC's design expertise is world renowed and he has been involved in designing prototypes for the likes of Aston Martin etc and has also been making body kits which are retailed in the domestic Indian market. According to Chhabria the newly designed 'S' sports car will bear the DNA of a Ferrari or Lamborghini with similar supercar performance. From its looks it certainly plays the part.

All this at what price, only Rs. 25 lakh, that's make it one of the cheapest super cars in the world. The low price is not entirely a good thing as certain areas of the DC-S have been neglected. Note in the picture of the interiors the under dash area and the pedals appear crude and utilitarian, not fit for a car like the DC-S. Also the bonnet release lever looks like it has been taken from the Maruti 800. Lets hope DC fixes these odd issues in an otherwise great looking car. Only 200 cars would be made annually, each customized for the owner. Service centres are being set up in select metros for after sale service of these affordable sports cars.

DC will homologate the product and launch it in the domestic and certain overseas markets investing Rs 60 crore into the venture. The company plans to source critical parts like engines, transmission, suspension and the brake system from various global manufacturers but will develop the chassis, body frame and lighting indigenously along with the cars design. DC hopes that there would be a substantial latent demand for such a product and at this price making the 'S' a success and enabling DC to enter into the niche car business under its own brand.

HCl's Rs 13,900 laptop

HCL Infosystems, it seems, is trying to do to personal computers what Tata Motors’ has done to the automobiles by launching the world’s cheapest car, Nano. To tap the fast growing laptop segment in India, HCL Infosystems on Tuesday unveiled the sub-Rs 14,000 laptop, which is believed to be the cheapest portable PC available in the country so far.

The 'X' Series "MiLeap" laptops are available with both flash-based and disk-based storage. Their sturdy design makes them dust- and shock- proof. Among others, the leaptops are Wi-Fi ready, and feature network ports and an option for data card. They are available with GUI-enabled, user-friendly Linux operating system (OS).

The 'X' Series "MiLeap" laptops are priced, starting at Rs 13,990.

The other series launched by HCL, the 'Y' Series, has laptops powered by the latest Intel Ultra Mobile Platform (Intel processor A110 and Intel 945GU Express Chipset). They feature Microsoft's Vista Home Premium OS, a swivel seven touch-screen cum note pad, an 80GB HDD, wireless connectivity, data card option, Blue-tooth, and Ethernet network port, among others. These leaptops sport multiple navigation features, including touch- screen, thumboard, stylus, keyboard, mouse, and one-touch buttons.

The 'Y' Series "MiLeap" laptops are priced, starting at Rs 33,990.

Both 'X' and 'Y' Series leaptops are fully RoHS-compliant, and have a low energy footprint.

The notebook, which runs on Linux operating system, has a 7-inch LCD screen and weighs about 1 kg. HCL also launched the laptop with Windows Vista operating system at Rs 29,990. Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and CEO, HCL Infosystems, said, the device is half the price point of current similar products available in the market.

Chowdhry said just like Nano, the notebooks in the MiLeap series would create a different segment all together, which will help grow the market further. “This will herald in a new category of computing devices, opening up a wide range of new usage scenarios and application areas,” he said. The notebooks will start shipping from January 26.

Both the models have network ports, are Wi-Fi ready, have the option for data card. “In order for us to broaden the number of people who can have access to information via broadband internet we need to make the internet more affordable and accessible to a much larger number of people,” said Ramamurthy Sivakumar, managing director-sales and marketing, South Asia, Intel.

Notebooks in the sub Rs 25,000 range are already available in the market and are increasingly finding their way into homes, educational institutes, and SMEs. HP and Zenith Computers have introduced their standard notebooks at a starting price of Rs 24,990. While Dell’s notebooks are also available for as low as Rs 32,000, Acer’s laptops are also available at Rs 20,999.

Led by drop in prices and the benefit of mobility and space management, notebook sales in India are growing faster than desktop sales and are projected to corner 40% share of the India PC market by 2010. Notebook shipments have grown 86% in FY07, and today, one out of five PCs sold in India is a notebook.

The fact that every 50th Indian today owns a PC, shows there is a huge chunk of market yet to be tapped. Increased penetration of notebooks and desktops is expected to give a push to Internet usage in India, especially in the rural areas, from where the next stage of growth is expected to come.

Apple MacBook Air

Apple just announced the .16-inch thin MacBook Air -- a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. Just like the iPhone, you'll be able to pan around, pinch to zoom, and rotate with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple got the size down by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that's in the iPod classic, but you'll be able to order a 64GB SSD as an option. The Air eschews optical media, but there's a separate external you can snag for $99 and Apple's also announced a feature called Remote Disk that'll let the Air get data off the optical drive in any PC or Mac running the Remote Disk software. Pricing starts at $1799, and the Air will be shipping in two weeks.

Most people are expecting a conventional sub-notebook — a super-thin, lightweight laptop that ships without an optical CD/DVD drive. The MacBook Air may also dispense with a wired Ethernet port, according to rumor. It will be a purely wireless device, relying solely on Wi-Fi or other wireless technology for its connectivity — hence the "Air" moniker.

But the Air seems more like a ultra portable with a physical keyboard and multi-touch screen, according to our source (who we promised not to name but confirmed works at an Apple third-party vendor).

The MacBook Air features a 1.8-inch hard disk drive with 80GB of storage capacity standard. A 64GB solid-state disk (SSD) drive is an option. The hard drive is a Parallel ATA (PATA) model that operates at 4200 RPM.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo chip running at 1.6GHz, with 1.8GHz available as an option. Jobs noted that Intel was willing to engineer a new version of the Core 2 Duo specifically to Apple's specifications -- it's 60 percent smaller than others. The chip operates with 4MB of on-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed, and uses an 800MHz frontside bus. 2GB of 667MH DDR2 SDRAM is also included.

Like the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air features a slimmed down MagSafe connector for power. It comes with a 45 watt power adapter. A flip-down door on one side reveals USB 2.0, Micro-DVI (to connect an external display) and a headphone jack. The MacBook Air also includes 802.11n-based wireless networking support and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Apple estimates that with wireless networking turned on, the MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life.

yamaha Fz 150cc in India

Yamaha which plans to make a comeback this year has introduced four new models at the Auto Expo. With this Yamaha has unleashed its strategic intent to offer product line that demonstarates the global yamaha image and live up to the true Yamaha DNA i.e. performance,innovation and design. FZ 150cc is inspired from FZ1000cc bike. FzZ 150cc bike is expected to be released in India by dec-08. Also unlike the YZF R15, FZ 150 will have only an air cooled engine but that means it is friendly to your wallet. Is yamaha india is back to its roots what it is known for? But my lethargy was due to the fact that I wanted to cover those bikes first, which are production ready. The memory of the Yamaha Gladiator 150-165 cc "Prototype" is still fresh in my mind. The Gladiator 150-165 cc "Prototype" was another concept which was shown in Auto Expo 2006 but sadly never saw the light of the day. The other Yamaha product shown at the Auto Expo 2008, the YZF-R15 seems almost production ready and therefore I chose to cover that before the FZ-150.

The only change that Yamaha India needs to make in the FZ-150 is change the rear tyres from the impossibly fat (for a 150 cc) to normal ones for a 150 cc bike..
The FZ-150 "Prototype" shown in the Auto Expo 2008 has a 150 cc engine, carburettor (instead of fuel injection), fat rear tyres (about as big as Pulsar 200/220 rear tyres), air cooled engine (not liquid cooled like the YZF-R15), 5 speed gearbox (insted of a 6 speed one on the YZF-R15) and also the FZ-150 doesn't have the "delta" frame of the YZF-R15.

In November, Yamaha will launch the naked FZ, which uses an air-cooled engine, and lots of styling elements from the international FZ range (naked bikes from Yamaha). The engine, once again, is a 150cc unit, but torque rather than top-end glory is the aim here. So expect an effortless, likeable machine. Once more, the small bits are of a very high quality, high enough to make the RTR 160 look a bit under-designed. This one should be a more normal price, say Rs 65,000 on-road. Both FZ and the YZF-R15 have monoshocks, mind you.

Maybe the only change that Yamaha India needs to make in the FZ-150 is change the rear tyres from the impossibly fat (for a 150 cc) to the ones found on the Pulsar 150's and the Apache's. Apart from the tyre change the looks of the FZ-150 should be left untouched.The FZ-150 would look stunning even without that leggie "firangi" model on it.

I don't see a reason as to why Yamaha India shouldn't launch it. The FZ-150 easily will easily overshadow the Pulsar, Apache RTR, CBZ Xtreme or the Hunk in the looks department.And if performance if the name of the game, then the YZF-R15 should take care of it.On inquiring about when can we expect the FZ 150 to appear in the market, the Yamaha Officials at the Auto Expo said that they had no clue.

I just hope that the FZ-150 isn't just a "Prototype" but a mass production model to compete with the Pulsar 150, Apache RTR 150, CBZ X's and the Hunks.. and leave the YZF-R15 to take the niche position as the 150 cc performance king

India is an important market for Suzuki which outsold Japan in the first half of 2007. Recently Suzuki hinted its desire to holding the 50% market share in indian passenger car industry for eternal. It seems that suzuki is trying hard to make this true. “Our next world car will be made in India,” Chairman Osamu Suzuki told in New Delhi today(October 11th). After swift, Maruti has worked closely with Suzuki Motors to build a car, called as A-star, this hatchback will be the fifth global car for Suzuki but first to be produced in India. Swift sedan, splash hatchback and the new car A-Star will be the part of Maruti Suzuki’s ongoing efforts to protect its market share in India, which stood at 54 percent in 2006.

Maruti Suzuki’s A-star concept will be debuted at the forthcoming Delhi Auto expo and then it will be showcased in rest of international shows. For european market, A-star would be the Suzuki’s new Alto which is scheduled to debut at Geneva Motor show in March. For the first time, Maruti engineers in India have contributed to one of the Suzuki’s global project right from its inception.The production model that inherits some of the design themes of the Concept A-Star will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki India’s plant. Like the already-launched Suzuki world strategic models(swift, SX4, new vitara and splash. ), it will prove that sporty and exciting performance can be enjoyed together with outstanding fuel economy.

It has almost become a rule for modern hatchbacks to feature low slung grille, A-star complies to that. Number plate will sit on the broad strip. The engine and the manual transmission for the A-star will be manufactured by Suzuki Powertrain India. Suzuki would consider making a version with a small diesel engine from its powertrain unit in India.

A-star, a five door hatchback woould fit into the A - segment (currently alto is the market leader of this segment). A-star is expected to be priced around the 3 lakh range($7500). Mitsubishi I-Miev an electric car

If there is any question about whether or not Mitsubishi is serious about the battery electric car, of course. Of all the vehicles that have been adapted from a conventional gasoline vehicle, the "i" MiEV is perhaps the closest to being not only a practical substitute for a family-sized electric runabout but also one of the neatest integrations of electric car technology I've seen. This vehicle is displayed at Auto expo 2008 in newdelhi.

Where the "i" normally would have a 660cc turbocharged gasoline engine and fuel tank, the MiEV instead sports a 47 kw permanent magnet synchronous electric motor mounted in the rear, above which is positioned the controller. Buried neatly into the belly pan of the vehicle is a lithium-ion battery pack consisting of 22 large format modules developed by GS Yuasa Corporation in Japan. The 330-volt system has an energy capacity is 16kWh, which is the same capacity as GM is planning for its own 4-passenger, range-extended electric Volt concept car. But where the i MiEV has a projected electric driving range of 100 miles (160km), the Volt's target EV-only mode is 40 miles, with a flexible fuel engine reserve of some 580 additional miles.

The i MiEV is no acceleration sluggard, either. It's electric motor provides 180Nm of torque. Acceleration is 31% quicker and its noise level is some 5db quieter than the typical gasoline minicar. Seating four, it weighs 1,080kg (2380 lbs) and has a top speed of 130km/h (80 mph). Using the Japanese 10-15 mode driving cycle and the country's current grid power mix, which is heavily reliant on nuclear power, the MiEV demonstrates a whopping 72% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the gasoline "i".

In terms of operating costs, Mitsubishi estimates that using off-peak power at night means it will cost 1/9th the cost of fuel for the gasoline model; and even using daytime power rates, it is still one-third the cost of its petroleum-dependent sibling.

The car can be recharged using normal household current at 100 volts (taking approximately 14 hours to recharge), 200 volts (7 hr recharge time) and 3-phase 200 volt. In the latter case, it would take only 30 minutes to recharge the vehicle to 80 percent SOC (state-of-charge) using a Quick-charge system. The charger is built into the vehicle, the 100 volt female plug on the right rear, the 200 volt receptacle on the left rear (see photo below).

Mitsubishi has joint research programs evaluating the everyday practicality and quick-charge compatibility of these carswith three electric utilities in Japan: Tokyo Electric Power, Chugoku Electric Power and Kiyushu Electric Power. The company hopes that it can expand the number of vehicles in operation in Japan to as many as 30 in 2008. Assuming these tests are successful, Mitsubishi hopes to begin mass manufacture of the MiEV initially for the Japanese market in 2009. The company is also looking at offering the vehicle in England.

It's hardly a compliment to be called a lightweight, except if you happen to be a 62-inch rear-projection 1080p laser TV.

Consumer electronics giant Mitsubishi now hopes to combine the inherently large size of a rear-projection unit into a sleeker, lighter-weight product and pack it with enough advanced technology to out-dazzle the rest of the HD pack, although consumers may have to wait a while to see this next-gen version of DLP for themselves.

Since last winter, Mitsubishi has been trickling out details of what it unofficially is calling "Laser TV," citing it as a breakthrough in existing DLP (digital light processing) that it believes will eventually move HDTV one step further to perfection cosmetically and technologically, through the use of colored lasers.

DLP, a registered trademark of Texas Instruments, traditionally uses white-light mercury bulbs. Mitsubishi's new system, instead, uses separate red, green and blue semiconductor lasers in combination with an HD chip, which those who have seen a real-world demo (mostly dealers and Mitsubishi employees) say provides richer and more complex colors and hues, and noticeably more distinct HD clarity and depth-of-field.

Mitsubishi contends that lasers also prompt a more realistic manifestation of "black" than current DLP, plasma, LCD or CRT screens. Lasers purportedly shut off totally when not needed, frame-to-frame, creating a more natural blackness. (In contrast, today's DLP mercury bulbs do not completely blink off, according to Mit-subishi.) Today's DLP units without colored lasers already produce at least 16 million color variations, including 124,000 shades of gray, according to TI.

SOPHISTICATED LIGHT

The key component of non-laser DLP technology is an optical semiconductor (a Digital Micromirror Device or "DLP chip"), invented by TI nearly 20 years ago. It has called the chip "probably the world's most sophisticated light switch," with up to two-million hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors less than one-fifth the width of a human hair.

When the DLP chip is synchronized with a digital video signal, light source and projection lens, its flexible mirrors reflect digital images to a screen. The microscopic mirrors can reflex (blink on and off) a few thousand times per second. Much of TI's proprietary technology will be used with Mitsubishi's Laser TV, but source lighting from mercury bulbs will be replaced by the lasers.
It appears there is only one working Laser TV screen in existence for demo purposes for now; Mitsubishi is hesitant to show it off at trade shows because it still lacks suitable cabinetry and other non-technical aesthetics. A non-working cosmetic sample (see photo) of a 62-inch unit--along with the sole working screen demo--were featured at Mitsubishi's annual line show for dealers at its Huntington Beach, Calif., headquarters in April.

"We did display a working sample that was not in a finished cabinet [to] prove that we could produce a good HD picture in a finished cabinet using our laser technology," said Marty Zanfino, director of product development at Mitsubishi. Zanfino said the 62-inch diagonal screen will boast a depth of only about 10 inches and not require very much framing around the screen because advanced plastics will replace glass components in the rear projector, making the large unit lighter. (Plastics have replaced heavier glass casings in some current DLP products, as well.)
Consequently, he said, today's typical heavy-duty screen frames will not be necessary, and may be no wider than an eighth of an inch. The lighter overall weight will allow for a lower center of gravity; nearly the entire frontage can be devoted to screen surface. Thus, the Laser TV units will occupy a more compact footprint and allow sleeker cosmetic designs that could set the product apart from the rest.

But HDTV is usually about the picture--not weight or even design--and Mitsubishi is confident this is where Laser TV will excel.

"The color gamut is significantly larger because the lasers are so intense," Zanfino said. He compares its optimum video quality as being equal or superior to 35mm film. Zanfino said although prices will not be announced until the product is released, when asked, he acknowledged that Laser TV probably will start off somewhat higher-priced than today's DLP and plasma units: "We'll see, but lasers cost more than mercury bulbs."

Advantages

One major claim of laser advocates is the ability to produce undiluted, perfect colors allowing precise hue mixing. With the color enhancement capable with lasers, up to 90% of the visible spectrum can be displayed.Other improvements that laser advocates claim are bulbs that will never blow out, and increased efficiency by using two-thirds less power than traditional rear projection televisions. Historically, however, lasers have been too bulky and expensive for widespread adoption.
The laser technology advocates claim that the technology will allow displays with a richer, more vibrant color palette than the conventional plasma, LCD or CRT displays.

They also claim the displays will:

be half the weight and cost of Plasma or LCD displays
require around 25% of the power required by Plasma or LCD displays
be very thin like Plasma and LCD displays are today
have a very wide colour gamut
have a 50,000 hour life
maintain full power output for the lifespan of the laser, resulting in a picture that doesn't progressively degrade over time, such as with plasma and LCD technology

Drawbacks

Together with the advantages of laser sources, there are reports that also describe some of the current shortcomings of laser displays,[18] such as the following:
Safety. The high power emitted by the coherent laser sources is inherently dangerous to human vision. Proponents claim that integrating the devices with the needed diffusion filters removes this risk.

Speckle. Due to the narrowband coherent light source, speckle will be an issue at the display. This has also been a problem in laser lighting displays and has been solved through modulation of the light source thus widening the bandwidth and reducing the possibility for coherent interference. Proponents claim that this issue can be minimized by the use of diffusing elements and multiple sources. These, however, may impact display resolution and system cost.

The CTS will initially be offered with three engines: a 210-horse, 2.8-liter V-6; a 258-horse, 3.6-liter V-6; and a 304-horse, 3.6-liter V-6 with direct injection. All three V-6s are versions of GM's all-aluminum, quad cam, 24-valve "high-feature" engine and come with state-of-the-art goodies such as a forged-steel crank and variable valve timing. The 2.8 is an export-only engine, destined for China, Europe, the Middle East, and any other markets where engines over 3.0 liters attract higher taxes. The 258-horse 3.6 is essentially a carryover from the current CTS. The big news is the new direct-injection-DI-version.

The new CTS deserves a creamy BMW six under the hood. Yes, it's that good. It has great road presence, thanks to designer John Manoogian's dramatically chiseled exterior, and the interior looks upscale without the cheesiness Detroit once specialized in. Fit and finish, inside and out, looked good on the early build cars we drove in Germany, though some hard plastics and visible parting lines (the thin strips of raised plastic you get where the pieces of the die join) were still evident. And though it rolls on the same wheelbase as the previous CTS, interior packaging is much improved: Thinner backrests on the front seats liberate about two inches of knee room for rear seat passengers.

More important, the CTS drives like a proper BMW rival. It's light and agile on its feet, with quick steering response yet impressive straight-line stability at speed, and a StabiliTrak system that's beautifully tuned to be almost unobtrusive in its interventions. The sporty FE3 suspension with the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires is probably a bit too firm for most people-the ride can get jittery over broken pavement-but if you value handling above all else, that's the one to go for. The midlevel FE2 setup, which comes with the 18-inch-wheel package and all-season Michelin MXV4 tires, is probably the best compromise for most people, offering a good balance between ride and handling.

150-inch Panasonic Plasma TV

According to the president of Panasonic, Toshihiro Sakamoto, had one thing that Bill Gates' keynote yesterday lacked: A monstrous 150-inch plasma screen Panasonic calls the Life Screen. In Las Vegas and at CES, nothing counts quite so much as excess, so it looks like Panasonic has bragging rights for this year.

Everything else Sakamoto showed off paled in comparison, but there were still some pretty spiffy demos. Panasonic has a new plasma that's just ONE INCH thick, and consumes half the power of last year's model -- nice.

There was also a spiffy demo of something Panasonic is calling a "Life Wall." Basically you install giant Panasonic displays to cover every inch of a wall in your home. Coupled with face recognition technology and some virtual environment mojo, it turns into an interactive wall you can use to watch video, browse Google Earth, do video chat with your friends, and more.
Oh yeah, and Panasonic has a deal with YouTube to put a special YouTube menu in upcoming Panasonic TVs so you can browse your favorite internet time-waster right from the comfort of your couch. The interface looks similar to Apple TVs, with light text on a black screen.

The keynote kicks off with a video from Panasonic detailing about how the home is the most part of the community. "For centuries, people have come together as friends and families." It's the HOME. You spend time there, and its connected. We get it! In addition, there are pics showing different interpretations of the home, from a family in an igloo in Alaska to a WASPy family cuddling together on the beach.

The theme of the Panasonic Keynote is the Digital Hearth and Living in High Definition.
Toshihiro Sakamoto, President, Panasonic Networks, comes in to wild applause.
"Today, I'm very happy to say [our former] promises have come to pass and those dreams are now available in your stores at very affordable prices." And yes! Exactly what we predicted in our pre-CES report, that the vision with HD content, supported by other HD enabled electronics.

Announcement: Panasonic will come out with a 32 GB capacity SD card and is working on doubling that, and the newly developed 4GB micro-SD card will get bigger.
It's clear that the Flat panel technology is very critical to the hearth vision, as they want to bring back family time. They wanted to see what would happen if whole families had the top technologies in every category and get an understanding of how people live. So Panasonic gave away a bunch of their best products to a random family and studied them over a period of a few months. Here comes a video of the Benders, from Rutherford , NJ! They're excited, and believe it or not, they enjoy using all free gear.

And here's the Green pitch from Mr. Sakamoto. Panasonic was the first major manufacturer to remove lead from their electronics, he says. They have also identified energy inefficient products, and they want to eliminate those from their entire lineup within 2-plus years. They will also reduce carbon emissions by 300K within a few years.

And finally, the actual gadgets: They will change the people view Television itself! (Think they are exaggerating a bit? That's a big task, I think.)Wait, there's a new Plasma onscreen that will have 50% less power, and look, it's less than ONE INCH thick. That's crazy, and now the crowd is legitimately excited. And now this Kong-sized announcement: A surprise with a 150-Inch Plasma display, which "allows you to reveal the elephant in the room." Mr. Sakamoto, channeling Austin Powers: "Look at this baby!"

It's the "World's Largest Flat Panel," which they call the Life Screen. And it's not just about size, it's about a "new level of image quality." It has 4 times the resolution of their current display, and even though I'm more than 20 feet away, it looks impressive. One caveat with this presentation: They should have used Tatiana the tiger from the San Francisco Zoo, it would definitely raise a hair or two.

Announcement: Panasonic has an exclusive deal with The Beijing Olympics to be the official digital video provider. (Wait, didn't Microsoft just announce the same deal yesterday?) This is interesting. Some of the tech is being used by the athletes to help them out and train them (no details on that though).Line of the night: "That's right, Carlton", uttered by Mr. Sakamoto on his way back after an actor talks about the family plan again.

Announcement: They are going the wireless route all the way within a few years (Sharp is not doing that, if you saw our coverage yesterday.) Wireless, uncompressed HD video. There's no signal interruption, and is the world's first beam steering technology called Home Base. Mr. Sakamoto placed an HD wireless-transmitting camera on top of a Blu-ray player and it started transmitting to the screen immediately with a video that had just been taken by an actress offstage. Not a bad demo.

OCAP (a video protocol) has changed to True-2-Way, which will be rolled out later this year, via interactive cable ready services in the home.Brian Roberts of Comcast goes onstage. It's all about providing choice, he says, and True-2-Way, and open cable architecture, making it easier for different technologies to work together. They call it a breakthrough in consumer choice and technology.

The cable set-top box is built into the TV itself. No wires. And here's another Panasonic business partner: A partnership with YouTube, Picasa, and Panasonic. Panasonic will take advantage of the APIs so you can watch YouTube videos and view Picasa photos on your TV. Panasonic calls it Viera Cast. You'll also be able to beam photos and videos you take with Panasonic cameras and camcorders directly to these Google services.

You Tube will be embedded within a menu in the new Panasonic TVs, and the interface looks very similar to the one from Apple TV (with a black screen, You Tube ratings).
One last technology to introduce today: A video comes on, and it's about James Cameron and his upcoming film Avatar. John Landau talks about using a lot of Panasonic cameras and this secret super panel. He talks about a giant touchscreen he played with and he was able to play with an onscreen piano.

And here's the great innovation: It's called The Life Wall. It's a virtual environment, with a flat-panel display that covers an entire wall. It's also got face recognition technology (and with its size, probably body-recognition). Panasonic also calls it Stay with Me TV, because you can move it your hand and the TV screen will move with you, obviously. Users can interact with Google Earth and many other applications. It's a real-time interactive communication, and basically, Minority Report come to life and brought to the home. Panasonic envisions a future that is all-encompassing, and with that giant screen, well, it could happen.

Panasonic has a history leading the Plasma Display industry, oftentimes running neck to neck with Samsung in the display size arms race. This race to build bigger displays won’t continue forever, in our opinion: at 3.5 meters of diagonal, it becomes a little hard to fit in the average living room, particularly in Europe or Asia :)
