Argentina's Pakapi Records and New Zealand's PseudoAracana have teamed up to release Splito, a (yes, you guessed it) split 7" of the label runners' own projects: GMC and Antony Milton, respectively. Recording with ad hoc methods, both artists manifest a dissonant take on a wonderfully bent brand of acoustic music that's as organic as it is infirm. It's as if the city noise leaking in through your headphones overcame your favorite indie singer songwriter and suddenly decided to commandeer the music entirely, transforming it back into a purposefully experimental demo tape. If that sounds like it's up your alley, give the juxtaposition-heavy "Jingle 1: Pumice" a listen.

With an arsenal of synths and keyboards, multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Baron sculpts auteur pop in lo fi mode.

There’s a contradiction in The Garment District’s music, it’s the fact that although it has been produced in discreet lo fi key and it does have a certain retro feeling, Jennifer does not spare in resources to create something distinctly professional and unique and totally apart from the mediocre minimalism of many underground producers out there.

Bird or Bat is a piece of polyhedral pop full of layers of delicate synths and keyboard patterns interwoven into a beautiful mix of double vocals. Endless effects and arrangements have been placed with millimeter precision and artful patience rounding up a deceitful simple song.

You just have to look at the number of people credited in this track and its accompanied video to know that this is something serious flowing out of the mind of this tasteful producer.

The Garment District lives out of its own time (or maybe in its own time) and happily does not follow any trend or conventional logic. Sui generis.

Spanish improvisor and composer Ferran Fages controls feedback like a puppetmaster; he handles his guitar like a sculptor handles stone, harnessing the ebb and flow of electric six-string's hum/squeal and making it his to control at will. A single 42 minute track, for Pau Torres, (Pau Torres is the mastering engineer on this recording) listens like a TV drama watches. Feedback is our opening credits. Then the lonely sound of a single guitar enters the scene, with ringing chords and note clusters. Fages' playing recalls Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke at their most contemplative stages, and that is a very good thing. Compositions like this are personal listening experiences, meant for the dark of night – not a spring day in California. Right before the 20-minute mark, Fages conjures low sustained feedback that approximates the sound of a cello perfectly - WOW. Towards the end of this piece the guitar work of Dylan Carlson sprang to our mind for Fages' riffs sound similar to something from the last couple Earth records. Overall this composition is exact in its execution and patient with the details. Fans of all things guitar will love this album.

Russia may be best known these days for quality vodka, harsh winters, and bear-wrestling Presidents, so if analog synth-pop isn't the next thing that comes to mind when thinking about the country, you aren’t alone. That could soon change with Heatherwood, a Novosibirsk-based duo composed of 17-year-olds Maksim and Darya, who describe themselves as being “in love with ‘80s Scandinavian aesthetics, old analog/Japanese kid’s synths, and each other.” A romantic description to be sure, but Heatherwood inject “Eden” with such longing and innocence that the bubbling overlaid synths, washes of reverb-laden guitar, and programmed beats are merely an entry point to their bashful private world. As much as Heatherwood owes Cocteau Twins and dream-poppers of the past, “Eden” itself feels as out of time as its name implies. Listening, you have to ask yourself if it’s really nostalgia if you’re feeling it right here, right now.

“Yubiwa” is the Japanese DIY-recording scene’s equivalent of The Avengers, a long-awaited meeting of some of the most popular bedroom-based projects in the country today. This song brings together the shadowy Jesse Ruins (signed to Captured Tracks), swirling-pop maker Sapphire Slows (Not Not Fun) and the hazy rock of Hotel Mexico (Double Denim). Despite having connections with Western labels, “Yubiwa"arrives as a limited-run cassette and digital download, with all profits going towards victims of last year’s Tohoku earthquake. Each contributing artist manages to standout sonically over “Yubiwa’s” nearly six-minute playtime, but no single one dominates the song, with all three styles striking a captivating balance. Hotel Mexico’s guitars, drums and singing drive the song forward, while Sapphire Slows fills the remaining space with clouds of synth and vocals. Jesse Ruins, meanwhile, adds electronic touches that give “Yubiwa” the same other-worldly sound and just-before-sleep feel as the project’s individual work. It’s a great showing for all three artists involved, but an even better triumph for Japan’s ambitious DIY music scene.

Only 100 copies of the cassette are available, though folks outside of Japan can buy the track digitally on Bandcamp

Polymath Kouhei Matsunaga is a card-carrying world traveller. A resident of both Osaka and Berlin, his time is divided between producing intricate pen illustrations which depict a disjointed surrealism with impeccable technique and electronic music which is a combination of digital primitivism and an un-abashed, wordless emotiveness. While his line drawings are always black pen on white paper affairs, his music as NHK'Koyxeи is an open language, taking in digital technology and slanted club musics of the past 30 years. You can compare his mediums and find similarities – both his visual and aural arts present consistent, self-contained worlds, means of escape - but they're best understood on their own terms.

Propelled along with a beat that wouldn't be out of place on some Brainfeeder jams and cloaked in decaying synth patterns, "614" does that thing that truly great electronic music does – it moves the listener into an alternate head space, a space with more possibilities. A visual accompaniment in the form of Piotr Kamler's Chronopolis is suggested above.

"614" features on the PAN release Dance Classics Vol. 1. Matsunaga also released a sold out split with SND on the same label

Live they can veer from bass-heavy cacophony with enough low-end murk to disembowel, or they can be razor-sharp hardcore bullets, nailing each song in just over a minute with passion and breathlessness. Their self-titled debut 12" on Static Shock combines it all. 'Big Black Wings' is a swift, gritty thing which manages to sound brutal and desperate in the same minute and a half. Without getting into the nitty gritty of a man's emotions, these guys sound angry at something. The changes and wall-of-guitar production also suggest what an Electric Wizard (oh wait, this was recorded by the guy who recorded the first EW albums) record would sound like at the wrong speed.

It's been exactly six weeks since we had the pleasure of showcasing Brother Sun, Sister Moon's "Ghosts of Barry Mill," and now the pair is back with a crisply minted remix of "All You Need," the closing track from their self-titled release. Where the original pulls the listener through patches of leafy textures thronged with shoegaze touchpoints aplenty, duo member Gareth Munday's more sparse and measured interpretation innocently airs its fragile moments and exposes the underlying and surprisingly angular structure. The remix indirectly brings the piece back closer into line with singer Alicia Merz's work under the name Birds of Passage or a more rough and ready take on Munday's own Roof Light project, while substituting in a fresh set of subdued atmospherics to create an dream pop aesthetic. The result is a pleasing and abstruse piece that's given us a more perspective on the original and a renewed appetite for whatever comes next.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon's self-titled release is available on cassette tape as a co-release from Merz's own Cooper Cult Records and BLWBCK and is up for CD, vinyl, and digital pre-order from denovali

The word "mammoth" doesn't usually figure into many album reviews, but we can't think of a better word for the 6 CD set, Missing Nothing. This various artists compilation, put together by the Southampton, UK music collective/online community known as Bang the Bore, gathers tracks ranging stylistically from experimental composition to improvisation to noise. The scope of this set is nothing short of amazing and it this album is a fundraiser, kids! The folks at Bang the Bore will use the money made to fund shows in the Southampton area by purchasing a PA at first and maybe more if the set sells well. In a statement on the group's site concerning the collection they wrote, "We wanted to release something beautiful that people would want to keep; something that represents the musicians who have played for us during our first three years of events; and something that helps introduce some lesser known bands from our hometown of Southampton, UK." Well, mission more than accomplished because this set is beautiful. It features artists such as: John Butcher, After the Rain, The A Band, Ashtray Navigations, Seth Cooke, and many more. If these names are foreign to ya, never fear because we'll let you in on a secret: they're all good.
The 6 CDs are arranged thematically, with the first disc containing shorter tracks, though on this set "short" is a relative term because most cuts clock in at double digits. The second disc holds ecstatic noise and electronics. Disc three is more DIY style noise, but doesn't get too freaky. The fourth disc is dedicated to improvisation. Disc number five is on the trippy side, what some might call "psychedelia." And finally, the sixth disc is made up of tracks recorded either live or in unique locations away from a studio/room set up (listen to Seth Cooke's "The Tower" recorded in a "derelict cooling tower" below). So how does a listener navigate such a monster of a set? Try starting at the beginning. As much music as there is on this comp, it could take your next road trip, series of long ass bus rides, weeks of traffic jammed work day commutes, or repeated sweaty exercise sessions to listen to all of Missing Nothing. The music reveals itself slowly and since there's so damn much of it, it makes it easy to answer the question of, "What the hell am I going to listen to today?"

The ramshackle garage-informed psych pop of Hamburg-based outfit Sick Hyenas is probably exactly that kind of music you'd expect to emerge from the run-down dockside warehouses of Germany's second city, while in fact a fresh and raw cut like "Weather of Death" with its jangly melody lines and muffled vocals all drowned in thick distortion is not only more or less unheard-of among the old port town, moreover I'm also inclined to deem it one of the rare examples of sunny and unabashed guitar pop from this country that is not outright ridiculous, but maybe that's just me. The song is part of the altogether enjoyable, summery lo-fi routine The White Mofo Drug Smuggla Tape, a five-track EP that underscores the initial feeling that we should keep these guys in mind. Rumor has it that there's a 7" following soon as well.

The White Mofo Drug Smuggla Tape is out now in an edition of 20 and available at the band's live shows. It may also be downloaded for free here
