NAWOU celebrated International Women’s Day in a special way, this time not in a politicized celebration manner. NAWOU developed a documentary on promoting maternal health; with support of UNFPA and ARC, where women gave their opinions on the issues. The documentary was launched at celebrations in Kampala in the Central, Hoima in the West and Kamuli in the Eastern, on the 17th, 21st and 23rdof March 2011 respectively. Celebrations began with matching led by brass band to the venue of the launches.

Women's rights issues in England today

Women's rights issues are so disparate these days; there is no one issue that unites us all as the right to suffrage did in the early twentieth century. Inequality is still prevalent and women often bear the brunt of it. Women are more likely to face physical abuse; women still face discrimination in the workplace especially with regard to pay, whilst the onus of childcare is still very much on women.

Confronting medical issues for women

From the time of Hygeia in ancient Greece to present day, women have had a significance influence on the practice of medicine. The number of women in medical school does not equate with the number of women in higher academic positions, such as deans of medical schools or heads of departments. For those women who wish to climb the academic ladder, there are many obstacles along the way, including the lack of female mentors.

Turning from such models to the reality of what women have actually done in relation to peace making and the development of community relations in Northern Ireland a brief consideration of peace and peace making may be helpful. The literature is vast, but feminist writers, such as Betty Reardon, have suggested that the usual definition of peace is 'the absence of violence' and that is certainly how peace is currently experienced in Northern Ireland.

ROMA DENIED ADEQUATE HOUSING IN SERBIA

Instead of halting forced evictions the Serbian authorities in Belgrade are carrying out more and more, driving Roma communities from their homes and forcing them to live in inadequate housing. Roma communities, supported by local 2 and international NGOs, have taken action to challenge and prevent evictions, and defend their rights.

Widowed very early in life, or divorced after facing cruelty in their husband’s home, or raped and fighting a legal battle to get the rapists punished - these women from India’s tech hub have shown courage under crisis. Stories like that of Padma, Malati and Radhika - women who have shown extraordinary courage - are many in Bangalore, where women make up 48 percent of the city’s population of 5,281,927.

Women Writers need Publicity

The past year or so has been a bad one for women writers. Not for writing produced by women. It's been a bad year for women writers because it has become more apparent than ever that they are failing to receive the recognition they deserve. The February publication of Vida research demonstrating the astonishing under-representation of women in literary magazines and criticism didn’t surprise some women. There had been many conversations with women writers to whom editors had expressed a lack of interest in publishing work by women.
