Pinterest, the new social pin-boarding site seems to be the hot conversation topic.

Not only is there an incredible stream of traffic surrounding Pinterest and it’s contributors, many brands and marketing platforms are heavily leveraging Pinterest for business.

The possibilities for Pinterest are endless.  Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest is based on people’s interests and passions. This has proven to be more powerful than Twitter or Google Plus. So much so that this site recently broke the 11 million  unique visitors mark!

Pinterest Basics

The premise of Pinterest is sharing photos and creating themed virtual boards to organize your photos.

The act of adding a photo to a board is coined “pinning”.

Pinterest conveniently provides users with an easy to use bookmarklet, which you install in your browser to easily pin any image you stumble on that you really like.

The beauty of Pinterest is that you can get started even if you don’t have photos of your own.

You can “pin” any image on a webpage to one of your theme boards and your pin will contain the proper image attribution. This makes image sharing and embedding easy and worry free.

To follow someone on Pinterest you may follow  a board or a profile, it’s up to you. The main thing is to get in there and tinker around a little!

A unique use for Pinterest among Kindle publishers is sharing and testing book covers.

Should You Be Using Google Plus Hangouts Instead of GoToWebinar and Skype?

 My friend an avid Googler Chris Lang persuaded me to try out the new Google Plus Hangouts feature.

We scheduled a private hangout for the two of us, and his fab wife Margie. Well we didn’t actually schedule anything, Chris invited me to the hangout and when I finally managed to overcome the technical difficulties, I accepted the invitation and the hangout started. Later I learned you can pre schedule a Google Plus Hangout if you sync it to your Google Calendar.

Preparing For The Hangout

I love my Firefox browser.  I have long ago left Internet Explorer and avoided Google Chrome like the plague.

Chris insisted I install Chrome. No disrespect to all Chrome users, but I don’t like the idea of Chrome and I got a strange big brother feeling as I installed.

Next I needed to install the GTalk Extension for Chrome. This is basically a chat widget that provides Google Chat, Google Voice Chat and hangout interface.

The positive thing about this extension is that it notifies you when you are being invited to a hangout. (For a moment I felt transported to an Eastern Airport, then I realized my Hangout was up…)

Install Plugin Nightmare

Installing Gtalk was simple, however, since I had never before used Google voice on my PC, every time I tried to open the Hangout window I was prompted to install a plugin.

Results – After 2 Chrome crashes and one computer crash I managed to install the plugin.
Recommendation – don’t do it. It’s not worth the aggravation.

The Hangout

We managed to get on the Hangout, Chris suggested I record some of it with my Camtasia Studio screen capture. Little did I know installing Gtalk completely screwed up my recording settings on my computer.

I found this out only after we concluded our hangout and I attempted to save the recording and edit it. All the sound was gone… or rather replaced with awful noise.

Lesson – Record a very short segment as a test before going in for the kill….

The Hangout itself was pretty cool, the basic features are there, you can share your screen , add people to the hangout, make it public by inviting +public to your hangout. You can see all parties that participate in the Hangout and each has the ability to turn on a black screen (in case they need to do something behind closed doors during the hangout. )

We even watched a YouTube video together, though while the video played we could only talk while pressing down a green Talk button (reminded me of my childhood walkie talkie).

Hangout Etiquette

Now this is where it gets tricky. How do you successfully manage a group of ten people in a discussion? During the hangout I had a few creative ideas for needed widgets -

1. The bleep – for every time someone says something inappropriate
2. Hand up – Hey I have something to say about this
3. Two thumbs up – Awesome point, I totally agree

If your hangout is more limited, you might take the time before the hangout starts to lay out the ground etiquette rules.

Are Google Hangouts Better Than Skype?

I kept asking, how exactly is this better than Skype? I conduct most of my business on Skype, whether I am meeting a new consulting client via voice or video chat, or exchanging bits of data, Skype has earned a warm fuzzy place of respect in my heart.

Now here’s the thing, most people don’t have a Google Account, certainly not a GPlus account. Most people are afraid to install new software, extensions and plugins on their computer. Google provides no real support documentation for the installation process. There is no way I would ever ask a client to go through that just to talk, when Skype works great and is free. Perhaps this will change over time.

Now I know – Hangouts are not better than Skype.  At least not right now. I don’t see a crowd of 10 people any kind of competition for my GoToWebinar yearly subscription.
For the select few that have streaming Hangouts this is a different story.

Select users can now broadcast their Hangouts, which turns the intimate chat sessions into a live stream that can be watched by an unlimited number of participants.

The Hangout is broadcasted to their Google Plus profile as well as YouTube. Any one passing by can tune in, though the 10 participant rule still applies. Perhaps this is the real future of hangouts, though some legal issues regarding the streaming need to be sorted.

Sometimes you will pick up on small formatting errors only after actually seeing your book on a Kindle device or reader.

Don’t forget to pay attention to what people are saying in the reviews. If you receive many complaints about formatting, start by viewing your book in a Kindle reader.

 If you are doing any mobile marketing you may have found your self asking;

“how do I search Google and view the web as a specific mobile device type and model”.

If you are not yet surfing the web on your mobile phone, you may not realize, that depending on the model of your phone you will have a completely different search experience.

When buying mobile media or advertising or sending traffic to a mobile website it is especially important to research how the search or website looks to a mobile user.  And if you are paying for mobile advertising it is especially important to know how your ad will appear on various mobile devices.

Sometimes it can be a little complicated because if you want to see a landing page or a search the way the user does, unless you have the same mobile phone model, you don’t get to see the search the way the user sees it.

5. Browse the web as a mobile device. Open a Firefox browser window  and Go to Tools > Default User Agent > Mobile Devices. This will help you to see how the searches look like and what pages look like in different mobile devices in different browsers.

Today Google announced the launch of Google Search Plus for google.com browsers.

Google Plus has been slowly creeping into the search results for some time now, today three major features are rolled out:

1. Personal Results, which enable you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page;
2. Profiles in Search, both in autocomplete and results, which enable you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following; and,
3. People and Pages, which help you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and enable you to follow them with just a few clicks. Because behind most every query is a community.

This means that you will be viewing personal results on most of the first page results.

I don’t mean to burst any one’s bubble here but I get the distinct big brother feeling here. Perhaps the turnover for Google + was low and Google decided to force their social search on us? Instinctively I am reminded by one of my favorite sayings – ” a leopard doesn’t change it’s spots” So why is Google trying to be something it’s not?

What Should You Do About Google Search Plus?

1. In true form Google has made search plus your default, so you will actively need to change your search settings to opt out of personalized social search. You may also allow Google to collect your private info and simply toggle your search to web search (globe icon).
   Although Google promises all social search data is transferred by SSL, this hardly addresses any related privacy issues (and there are many).
2. I hate to say it but you will need to go with the flow and get into the habit of:
• Optimizing your images and sharing them to Google Plus
• Putting up Google Pages
• Completing your Google Profiles diligently
• Adding people to your circles and making friends with some peeps!

If you are not residing in the US you will need to wait a little longer before experiencing this new Google functionality I fondly nicknamed the Egocentric Search.

Submitting your new app to app review sites is one way to get the word out about your new iTunes or Android App. With hundreds of apps published daily it is imperative you provide all the necessary information to your selected app reviewers so that they will actually review your app and not just move on down the list of app review submissions.

Effective App Review Request Components

1. Introduce your company and describe why you made the app. It is important to state the app target audience (The X app is perfect for….) and what category it belongs to.
2. Describe the game play of your app, similar to your app store description, writing your app description in a compelling way will only will work to your advantage.
3. Provide comparative information – How your app is similar or different to other apps currently on the market.
4. Include a promo code or dev build of your app for the reviewers to play with. If your app costs money on the iTunes or Android stores don’t expect the reviewers to purchase your app.
5. Include your website, contact information, support email
6. Provide your social network information such as Twitter and Facebook Page.
7. Include a link to your app demo video (YouTube is recommended for further exposure).

How to Make a Demo Video Of Your iPhone App

 Many iPhone app developers skip making a demo video of their app. Somehow this usually falls between the cracks or is simply to frustrating to accomplish. Marketing with video is a very effective way to get the word out about your new app in general, and is a very important part of your app review submission.

Another reason you may hesitate to make a demo video of your app is the quite frankly it’s a pain in the @#$%. Since the Apple SDK does not allow video capture of what your iPhone is doing you will need to get a little creative to create your app demo video.

You may be thinking this is an expensive affair; however there are many ways to demo your app in video.

The cheapest way is to take screen captures of your app by pressing the home button and power button at the same time and saving them to your camera roll.
Next you can animate these images with an online video creator like Animoto (simply email the pictures to yourself and then upload into the Animoto Video creation Wizard.

You can use also make the app video demo on your iPhone using what else but an app!

Either way you can attach music or an mp3 voice soundtrack of yourself or a hired actor speaking about the app and describing what you are doing in the video / or describe the app game play and features.

 iMovie for iPhone is the official video editing Apple application that lets iPhone users record and edit high-definition video to publish directly to YouTube. If you are adamant on capturing the actual video (may be important is your app is a game) there a few solutions to consider.

The first is jailbreaking your phone. The app “Display Recorder”, available for $5 in the Cydia Store, allows creating an AVI movie of the iPhone’s screen content. This works across all apps. The movie files can then be uploaded to YouTube or pulled off the iPhone

The second is creating a video in an app simulator (you will need the app source code to accomplish this). Record a Simulation Of your iPhone App in play on your Mac.

Alternately you can record your phone during play with an external camera. In this instance you will need to pay attention to lighting and screen glare as well as keeping the camera steady. This is especially useful if your app is for the iPad (looks great in full size glory).

Uploading Your App Demo Video to YouTube

If this is your first app you should certainly consider creating a YouTube channel for your apps.
For this you will need to sign up for a YouTube account and then go on to optimize your new YouTube Channel and upload your video correctly.
