#IndyDay13: Jeff Price, Founder of Tunecore, on Making Money with Music on YouTube

This weekend, the Philadelphia Chapter of The GRAMMYs hosted a fantastic event dedicated to successful careers as an independent musician called Independent's Day. It was a great day with interesting people presenting thought-provoking ideas on the present and future of the music industry. I'll try to share some of those bigger ideas throughout the week via posts and I have to start with a great presentation given by Tony Van Veen, of CD Baby, and Jeff Price, founder of Tunecore, on how musicians can make money from YouTube.

Option 1
Have you ever watched a music video on YouTube and had an advertisement played or displayed? Musicians can easily use the same technique to make money with their videos. Jeff and Tony's presentation explained that all you have to do to participate is create a YouTube channel and then choose to become a partner. You can learn more about how to do that here. This means musicians have the potential to make money from music videos, live performance footage, videos of adventures on tour, and even non-music videos- like showing fans how to cook a favorite recipe - or anything else you can imagine. This is fantastic for both musicians and fans because it gives musicians the ability to increase their income while giving fans new content.

Option 2

Jeff explained that there are three distinct copyrights within a YouTube video that contains music: the video itself, the recording of the song, and the actual song itself. If you own one or both of the musical copyrights (if you write your songs and haven't signed a publishing or record deal, you probably do) you can claim your music if it is used in a video that someone else posts. This means that if someone posts a video and uses your song in it you have the potential to make money from that video because you own the song. It's a bit counter intuitive since YouTube has frequently been a copyright battleground within the music industry, but it creates an interesting potential for musicians to make money by encouraging fans to participate online and actively share their music on YouTube. For example, musicians could ask fans to cover their song or create a video dancing to it and then claim the music from. It's an interesting concept that leads to a range of creative ways to engage fans while earning money and, as Jeff pointed out during the presentation, you could potentially turn YouTube into Kickstarter and use it to fund your music.

If you're a bit of a music industry nerd, or were a fan of Tunecore and Jeff's insightful blog posts, you probably know that Jeff is no longer working with the company he founded. So, you may have been wondering what the music business thought-leader and indie artist advocate will be up to next. Well, this weekend he revealed that and it sounds exciting. Jeff mentioned, for the first time publicly, that he will be launching a site called Audiem (that may not be the correct spelling, apologies if it isn't) which will help artists easily get their money from YouTube. If his past work and this weekend's insightful presentation are any indication of what's to come, then it will certainly be a company to watch. Can't wait to see what he will do with it!

4 Steps to Job Fair Success

It's job fair season and that means a lot of wonderful opportunities to meet with employers face-to-face in an efficient, organized setting. That may not sound like the ideal way to spend a gorgeous spring day, but it's one of the best ways to let your personality make a good impression while ensuring your resume is actually seen by someone with the ability to make a hiring decision. You can find job fairs sponsored by local governments (such as the unemployment office in your county), local colleges, and even trade organizations and other non-profits. Still, it won't matter if you attend every job fair in a hundred mile radius if you don't come prepared. So here are 4 easy-to-follow tips to help you make the most of your job fair experience and, hopefully, get an interview.

1) Do Your Homework
The most important thing to do before going to any job fair is to research the companies attending and find out what types of positions they might be looking to fill. If you cannot find this information, contact the company or organization that is hosting the fair and ask them for a list of employers. Then look up every single organization to find out if what they do might be of any interest to you. Take a look at their careers page to see if there is a specific open role that you would like to apply for and make a note of it if so. Then, take the list of companies that match your interest and do a bit of extra research to learn about the company and any recent news or accomplishments so you have something to talk about that will help you stand out and impress. For example, I once attended a job fair where an employer began trying to explain to me where they were located but I had done the research and knew exactly where they were and politely told him this. He was impressed, gave me his card, and promised to do whatever he could to get me an interview since I had come prepared.

2) Make a Plan
Now that you know which companies match your interests, rank them in order of importance. It doesn't have to been an official scale, but make sure you know who your key targets are based on which companies are most important to you. You may want to focus especially on the companies whose expertise matches your interests and who happen to be looking to fill a position for which you want to apply. However, if there are companies you'd love to work for that aren't currently looking to fill a role that matches your expertise, don't be afraid to go say hello anyway and tell them why you'd like to work there. They can still take your resume and pass it on to someone in the correct department in case an opportunity opens in the future. Once you know what companies are most important to you, you can focus your efforts to use your time wisely by speaking with those you care about most first so that you don't run out of time. Be careful though, you shouldn't necessarily go to your first-choice company right away. Start by talking to a place that is lower on your list to give yourself a chance to get comfortable and get rid of any nerves.

3) Bring Notes
When you're on the floor of the job fair and you're getting tired, it can be difficult to remember exactly why you wanted to talk to each company. Bring some notes with bullet points explaining what the company does, where they are located, any recent news items, if they are hiring for a specific position, and what you like about them. Refer to this sheet before you approach each booth and you'll be sure to leave a better impression than the person who waits in line to talk to someone only to ask the recruiter what they do (don't be that person!).

4) Get a Card
Face time with an employer and the chance to hand over your resume is great, but the ultimate goal should be to a card. Then you will have a real person to reach out to and follow up with at the company and you have the opportunity to send a thank you note or email.

GRAMMY Camp is a residential summer camp for high school students intersted in learning about the music industry. These talented students come to LA or NY from all over the country and have the chance to work with industry leaders and even famous musicians. The Camp Counselor Position is a paid support role, via stipend, for college students and grads age 21+. Counselors provide help with musical, technical, administrative, and all aspects of life of GRAMMY Camp.

People who love music tend to possess an inherent understanding of the depths of human emotion, if only because a soulful voice and powerful chord can capture the most harrowing of circumstances like nothing else in this world. Still, there are some things that are beyond comprehension. Because when so many lives are lost or forever changed so suddenly in a moment that makes so little sense, well, nothing can really do that kind of pain and frustration justice.

Music internships and education don't seem so immediately important when the city home to some of the world's best music programs is under attack. So there was nothing worth saying.

In reality though, while internships specifically may have temporarily taken a back seat, the answer is not to turn off the music, it's to turn it up. Because whether it's an acoustic song about world peace or furious punk rock, the cathartic power of music can overcome hate and help people begin to heal. So, before trying to get back to posting regularly, let's take this moment and honor Boston, and the strength of those who call it home - both temporarily, for school, and on a permanent basis.

4 Ways to Get Rid of Nerves Before an Interview

If you had to list the activities most likely to cause anxiety, interview would probably be at the top alongside things like public speaking. An interview, though, tends to be extra intimidating because it has a lot in common with public speaking but, unlike public speaking, you can't just prepare a planned speech with notes beforehand. Sadly, interview anxiety tends to become a self-fulfilling prophecy: your fear that you will do bad kills your confidence and tends to make you unable to perform at your usual level. So, here are a few strategies to help you cope with pre-interview stress and, hopefully, do better as a result.

Prepare
This probably sounds obvious but it doesn't just mean review the company's site and read their blog. It means find out everything you can about the company, the position, and the industry so that you'll be prepared and well-versed in any and everything. Google your interview and the company executives, find and recent news about the company, and visit all of their social networks to get a better understanding of their work and culture. Figure out exactly how your skills can benefit them and come up with a few suggestions for how you can help them. Review your resume and see how specific experiences or skills match the job description and be prepared to speak to that. Think about your work experience and come up with a few stories that will answer things like "tell me about a time you were a leader" or "what is your biggest weakness?" The more you know about the company and understand why you'd like to work there and how your skills can fit in, the less stressed you will feel when your interviewer asks a question intended to catch you off guard. Preparation also means being 100% sure you know exactly how to get to the office and how long it will take (add some extra time to be safe) so you don't feel rushed or confused when you're trying to get there in time.

Exercise
Okay, so you shouldn't exactly hit the gym an hour before you interview. However, if you have time (and the ability to shower!), nothing beats stress better than cardio. Don't use this as a time to try something new and challenging that will leave you feeling sore and exhausted, but something you're comfortable with and can easily conquer. It will remind you how strong you are and that can handle anything. Plus, the endorphins will leave you feeling positive and happy and that is a great vibe to give off in an interview.

Breathe
Breathing is obviously pretty useful in general, but if you're a singer, practice yoga, or play a wind instrument you've likely heard of diaphragmatic breathing. The diaphragm is a muscle in your rib cage that regulated breathing but most people don't take full advantage of it. When you take a deep breath, allow you stomach to expand rather than having your shoulder rise. This will help you take the fullest breath possible and will help relax your body.

Music
Before your interview, make a playlist of the songs that make you feel invincible and bring it with you for your commute- whether that's listening to an iPod on the train or blasting it on your car stereo. It's hard to feel nervous when you're singing along to empowering music.

How to Prepare for a Phone Interview: Get Comfortable on the Phone

When it comes to interviews for an internship position there are generally two different common scenarios you'll encounter: a phone interview or an in-person interview. Both essentially have the same goal and can help to get you one step closer to getting an internship. However, phone interviews tend to come first and are more likely to catch you off guard - a good way to wind up nervous and flustered. So, here's some advice on how to deal and how to be prepared for a phone interview. This will probably be your first interview experience because according to CNN.com, companies often use phone interviews to help narrow down candidates. Here's part two of our tips on how to prepare for a phone interview, if you're looking for more help, check out part one here.

Be One with the Phone
Let's face it, while we tend to have phones in our hands constantly today, it's pretty rare that we're actually talking on it (I don't mean via text). As a result, I know a number of people who have a sort-of phone-induced anxiety. After all, we can stay in touch with friends 24/7 without actually speaking a word and we can even shop and order food online without ever needing to call someone. Sorry to say, but if you're afraid of talking on the phone you're going to need to get over it. The phone is pretty important in business in general and several music professions require spending quite a bit of time on the phone (management and PR to name a few). Plus, it's a fairly important life and office skill still in most of the world- you can't hash out details or get answers quite as quickly by any other means.

If you need to get comfortable on the phone here are some ideas for practice to help you get used to it. The goal is to work at it in a casual setting until you're no longer apprehensive about picking up or being on the phone.

Put a ban on texting and social media for one week, make it so you need to call friends and vice versa and then actually do it
Call older family members to check in on a regular basis since they are less likely to rely on text and email
Call when you want to order a pizza or other food rather than order online
Call companies to ask questions rather than Google it (for example does that cool local shop take credit card or just cash?)
Call companies to ask if they have an internship program rather than just look online
Call someone to ask for directions
Call your professor if you have a question about class or want to set up a meeting, some professors give out their phone number for questions but you've probably been ignoring it in favor of email
Ask a friend to do a mock phone interview with you where they call you and ask you some practice questions
Visit your school's career office and ask if you can set up a mock phone interview with them

We're having a contest to give away 2 pairs of tickets to ACM Presents: Tim McGraw’s Superstar Summer Night, an amazing two-hour concert on April 8th in Las Vegas that includes performances and appearances from a number of major celebrities. Throughout this blog, we have posted 20 questions plus one bonus. When you find an answer, that post will also contain the next question (a yellow music note will alert you when you've found the correct post). That question will lead you to a new answer and a new question and so on and so on until 2 questions total have been answered. The bonus answer is also contained in the last post. It takes roughly 15 minutes to complete if you put your search skills to use (each questions uses some certain key words that will lead you to the next if you use the search box on the right of this blog). You don't necessarily have to answer them all to win. The winners will be the two people who answer the most questions correctly- whether that means 6 correct answers is the most or 21 is. PS. This seems like a great time to point out that any time you apply for something these days- be it a job, internship, camp, college, or whatever else, it's pretty likely you will get Googled. So Google yourself, check your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and anything else you have a public profile on. Jr. Music Executive (JME) is a nonprofit based in Philadelphia that shows high school and college students the business behind the entertainment industry. They work to help youth understand the importance of education and experience in a successful career and inspire them to set goals in order to reach their full potential. It's a fantastic program that gives students real hands-on training by providing workshops, internships, scholarships, and networking opportunities. Their signature program is a 10-week internship for high school and college students as well as recent grads that provides a holistic view of the industry and matches students with a partnering business or project to get real-world experience. JME recently announced this year's lucky interns, who were chosen via an application process: Devon Brown, Sierra Cody, Breannemarie Davis, .Tinesha Davis, Chantias Ford, Okoma Mita, Juliana Peche, Dillon Sweigart, and Isaiah Weatherspoon.

Plus, if you're looking for a bit of real-life wisdom from the Jr. Music Executive Program yourself, then keep reading, because I had the chance to talk to Ashley Coleman, a former JME intern and current Membership Coordinator at The Recording Academy, who shared how the JME program helped her succeed in music and what advice she would give for students looking to break in to music now.

What is your current role in the music industry?

Currently I am the Membership Coordinator at The Recording Academy Philadelphia Chapter. We are a professional organization that is most well known for producing the GRAMMYs each year in February but we also have 12 chapters across the country. My job is to aide members with any questions they have about membership, diligently seek out viable recording industry musicians that should be members and also help facilitate professional development and networking events for members throughout the year.

How did the Jr Music Executive Program help you get there?

Well, I think the email to tell me that the position was opening was literally from Aisha Winfield, the Executive Director of Jr. Music Executive. But even before that, the program really gave me a crash course into what the music business was all about. I first got involved with JME because it seemed like a good first step in my pursuit of songwriting. It really helped me understand how a complete project was put together by an artist, what steps it took to make the project successful and showed an array of careers surrounding one artist. Working on independent projects with Aisha, really helped me sharpen up my administrative skills. And I felt like I was more prepared once I landed my first gig.

What advice would you give someone interested in getting a similar job at a similar company?

Well one of the things that helped me was that I was also a member of the GRAMMY U Program. With that, I would always volunteer to help at some of the major events. I think that in being a familiar face around the organization, it made the interviewing process that much easier. I already knew a lot about the culture of the organization, not just what I rehearsed right before the interview. My best advice would be, see if there is a way you can help the organization even if there is not a paying job readily available.

How would you explain the Jr Music Executive Program to someone who wasn't familiar with it? What were your favorite parts of the program and what are some examples of activities a Jr Music Exec intern might participate in?

The Jr. Music Executive program is basically an opportunity for students to receive information about the music industry in a more in depth and detailed fashion. Sometimes school courses just gloss over certain information. But I feel like JME really broke down the things that make the music industry tick. My favorite part of the program is the networking element. And I don't mean with top industry execs, although that happened too, but I mean between peers. I still work with many of the other students that were a part of my JME class. It gave us a sense of belonging and we had a group of people who were like-minded all striving to be in the same business. That was so valuable to me. Activities while I was there included putting together an end of the term event, we also visited Def Jam, and we were able to visit music studios as well.

What was the most important or helpful thing you learned by participating in the program?

I think one of the most important things I learned by participating was how to go with the flow and also how to deal with a lot of different types of people. The music industry is full of egos and also full of changes, JME prepared me to be able to think off the cuff and how to handle high pressure situations without losing it. I think that is an essential part of working in the industry.

Did you complete other music internships and did you feel your experience with in the Jr Music Executive program helped with those?

I of course did a few different internships. Most of mine were actually before JME though. I interned for JME during my last semester at school. But all around, JME taught me so much that it has been helpful in many areas of my professional career.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in the music industry?

The advice I would give is to be patient. It seems that the generations coming after me, seem to be even more impatient than we were. But really, the music industry is not an easy business to break in to by any stretch of the imagination. I am still working to get to my desired place in the industry, but I have learned that all things come in time. It takes a ton of networking and a ton of working for free to get you where you want to be. But I believe that people that are patient and persistent will always win.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I would like to add the one of the other great things about JME is that it's not just an internship for 3 months and then it's over. It ends up being something that you are connected to for life. I still call Aisha when I have questions about how to handle things and she continues to create opportunities for the alumni of the program, which is awesome. Continuing to have that support system of your peers as well as Aisha, has been essential to any "success" I've found so far in this industry.

How to Prepare for a Phone Interview: Be Ready

When it comes to interviews for an internship position there are generally two different scenarios that you are like to encounter: a phone interview or an in-person interview. Both essentially have the same goal and can help to get you one step closer to getting an internship. However, phone interviews tend to come first and are more likely to catch you off guard - a good way to wind up nervous and flustered. So, here's some advice on how to deal and how to be prepared for a phone interview. This will probably be your first interview experience. According to CNN.com, companies often use phone interviews to help narrow down candidates and the first five minutes of the call are the most important part. So, to help you make a good impression, here's the first in a new mini-series on how to prepare for a phone interview.

Be Ready

You should, ideally, be prepared for a phone interview immediately after submitting your application. That's not to say you need to know ever That's not to say you need to know every single detail about the company and craft perfect responses to obscure questions but, many screening interviews happen when you least expect it. For instance, you're on your way to the gym and your phone rings with a number you don't recognize and the person on the other end says something like "This so-and-so from company-you-really-want-to-work-for I have a few questions for you, is this a good time?" If you're really in a situation where you can't talk, then be honest and say it because there's no benefit to talking if you're somewhere where it's loud or you'll be distracted or you're rushing to class. But, to be honest, there have been times where I missed a call from a company I applied to only to never hear from them again (after all, like in The Devil Wears Prada, a million girls - and guys- would kill for this job so if you don't answer and your potential boss doesn't want to wait they can just call the next person). Then again, if that happens, they may not have the best work environment anyway. Fortunately, with the reliance on email, it does seem to be more common that phone interviews are scheduled in advance via email. If you have scheduled a phone interview in advance, use it as an opportunity to prepare by doing the following:

Think of some questions you would like to ask
Have your resume handy for reference
Make some notes on the company and have them handy,
Consider making a list of any key points you'd like to make
Determine what days and times you would be available for an in-person interview
Determine when you are available to start and end an internship
Practice answers to some common interview questions
Know why you want to work there
For a music company, know answers to questions like the last records you bought, the last shows you went to, an up-and-coming musician you like, why you want to work in music, and other similar music questions
Pick a place where you will feel comfortable but not be distracted to go during your interview

The Career Fair is the largest one solely focused on broadcasting and attracts media companies and applicants from all over the country. Its employers, which last year included CBS News, Radio One, and Ericsson, among others, represent top broadcasting companies who are recruiting for positions ranging from internships and entry level roles to advanced positions in TV, radio, media sales, and broadcasting technology. In fact, in 2013, one attendee, Trinity Chavez, was lucky enough to score a dream internship at CBS News through a connection she made at NAB Show Career Day. “While [at] the NABEF career fair in Las Vegas," say Chavez, "I met the Director for News Associates and Internship Programs for CBS. She provided me with first-hand knowledge about the broadcast industry and she gave me information about the various internship programs that CBS offers and how to go about applying for them. I've been fortunate enough to work with a lot of great music companies as well as work with and even meet some of my favorite musicians and music business idols. Still, if you asked me what my favorite experience has been in the music industry my answer, without hesitation, would be working with the extraordinary students at GRAMMY Camp. This remarkable summer program gives high school students the chance to work with industry professionals in order to learn what it takes to become one as well as collaborate with other students to create, record, and present original material and business ideas. I still wear the camp shirt regularly just to have an excuse to tell people about it (seriously, I really am that nerdy) and I could probably write an entire book about what makes GRAMMY Camp so incredible. Description:
You could spend your summer in your hometown dreaming about being, or working with, a rockstar, or you could spend your summer actually doing it. GRAMMY Camp is a professionally-focused residential music industry summer camp for high school students. Most jobs these days require a college degree - even one as an assistant. Between that and urging from your parents, you know you're destined for college despite the fact that you'd rather spend time on the road with your band. The good news is if that sounds like you and the traditional college experience isn't exactly something you're interested in, there are several options for schools that might make you feel less like you're in class and more like you actually are on the road with a band. These days, there are several major, and an increasing number of new, educational programs and fully recognized universities that are solely dedicate to music, the arts, or entertainment. We started last with with three examples, so let's take a look at some more options.

Berklee College of Music
Berklee is probably the most well-known school that is solely focused on music. It is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The school focuses on contemporary music and offered the first programs in jazz, rock, electric guitar, scoring, songwriting, turntables, electronic production, and more. It also offers a number of online programs and courses. It boasts a pretty impressive list of successful alumni including more than 250 GRAMMY wins and people like James Valentine of Maroon 5, John Mayer, the members of the band Karmin, Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks, Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, and members of Passion Pit. Berklee has over 4,000 students and 12 different majors.

Full Sail University
Full Sail is a for-profit school located in Winter Park, Florida. The school is nationally accredited and offers associates through masters degrees, including online programs, in areas like design, animation, business, audio, and film. It offers 40 different degree programs and has more than 16,700 students. Full Sail's mission is to "provide students with an innovative style of education, delivered by a staff of dedicated individuals, that addresses the career opportunities available in an ever-growing, constantly evolving industry." The music school includes degrees in Music Business- both on an offline, Music Production, Recording Arts, Show Production, and Recording Engineering. Notable alumni include GRAMMY and Oscar winners.

Five Towns College
Five Towns is located in suburban Long Island, New York with a small student body of less than 1,000. It started life as a business school, but today is purely focused on the arts with programs in communication, jazz / commercial music, music education, theatre, and business management. Jesse Carmichael and Adam Levine of Maroon 5 both attended this school for a time as did Wyclef Jean and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes.

It provides a creative environment surrounded by some of Philadelphia's most important cultural institutions like The Kimmel Center and Philadelphia International Records. The school offers degrees in Music Education, Composition, Instrumental or Vocal Performance, and Music Business. Alumni include opera and Broadway performers, American Idol contestants, and Jared Leto.

McNally Smith College of Music
McNally Smith is a for-profit college located in Saint Paul, MN and offers various degrees and diplomas in music performance, business, live sound, music business, production, engineering, composition, and songwriting. The school is focused on music and supported by staff with real-world credits and experience, but also provides a liberal arts education. The school's cofounders set out to "take the education of popular musicians seriously" and, as a result, the school emphasizes contemporary music education and real world experience. Today, the school has more than 600 students and a 100-member faculty. McNally Smith alumni include Bon Iver's manager.

The School of Audio Engineering (SAE)
SAE is a private college that was founded by an audio engineer and producer. It first opened in Sydney Australia and part of what makes it an intersting program is that is now has locations all over the world including Europe, Asia, Australia, and more. Its North American locations include Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, and San Francisco. SAE offers programs in audio engineering, animation, game design, digital filmmaking and music production. It is actually the largest college in the world to focus on these areas of study with locations in 53 different cities around the world.

As part of LaFamos' new internship program, students will be coached by a senior publicist at the firm on implementing knowledge gained in school. ''We wanted to create an experience that gives back just as much as it demands'' explains Hunter Scott, head of marketing & publicity for the Hollywood-based firm. ''There will be no coffee runs or paperwork filling. And though LaFamos has always taken a different approach, we wanted to aim even higher and give our interns a truly unique experience.''

Publicity interns who are accepted into the internship program will shadow one of the senior publicists at LaFamos, learn how to research appropriate press outlets, master creative writing and essentially do the same work any staff member would be doing, in preparation for a full time in the fields of Public Relations and Marketing. Interns will also receive their own company email address and reach out to press outlets for a hands-on experience.

Requirements:

Able to work three full days (9am - 5:30pm) per week.
Applicants have completed at least one year of college.

Nominate Your Favorite Music Teacher for the First-Ever Music Educator Award, Presented by The Recording Academy and The GRAMMY Foundation

Music teachers play an incredibly important role in a world where arts-education budgets seem to be on the decline. A great music teacher can help a shy student become a confident young adult or provide an outlet for someone going through a tough time. They can make the difference between life-long joy through music or a promising talent left un-pursued. They can make you believe in yourself and in your seemingly crazy dreams when no one else does. Is there a music teacher who made a positive difference in your life and encouraged you? If so, consider nominating them for the first Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy and The GRAMMY Foundation.

On this year's GRAMMYs, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Seacrest, and Neil Portnow announced a new award dedicated to recognizing music educators and their important role in a student's musical experiences. Nominations are open now until April 15, 2013.

How it works:

The award is open to current U.S. music teachers from kindergarten through college, in public and private schools.
