I had fun putting this one together. The most recent record by The Thermals has been in constant rotation at BigSwerve HQ over the past couple of months. The Lambchop record, “Damaged,” is easily in my top 5 records of 2006. If the goal of every musician is to release “timeless records,” Lambchop easily reaches that objective with this release. It will sound as beautiful 10 years from now as it does today. There are some jaw dropping moments of beauty on “Damaged.”

The Sublime Frequencies record entitled “Leaf Music, Drunks, Distant Drums” helped me to connect the songs this time.

The Thermals – Time To Lose

The Thermals – Back To Gray

The Thermals – St. Rosa and The Swallows

The Thermals – An Ear for Baby

Peter Bjorn and John – Detects On My Affection

Peter Bjorn and John – Lat’s Call It Off

Meat Puppets – Plateau

Damien Jurado – Denton, TX.

Lambchop – Prepared [2]

Labmchop – The Rise and Fall Of The Letter P

Portastatic – Song For A Clock

The soundtrack to Qurbani, an Indian film from the early 80s, was on the mind and helped me connect the songs for this podcast. The film and the songs are quite famous in India. It’s interesting to hear the influence of primarily Western pop music in non-English pieces — and this record is heavily influenced by the Disco sounds that I grew up with.

I was unable to put the podcast together with the usual voice over without my mixer/mic setup that I have at home in the States. Rather than not do one at all, I decided to forge ahead and put out a podcast sans personal song introductions, wit, humor and overall pearls of wisdom. Surely, some of my dedicated fans will miss my soothing voice, but alas you may have to wait until I return from India. I’ll try to find an alternate method of creating the podcast by next week.

Update: I figured out the problem. A particular soundcard driver was behaving badly. Fear not — you shall hear my voice once again.
Here’s a tracklist:

This notably marks the introduction of Doug Gillard and Cobra Verde as the GBV backing band and the departure of Tobin Sprout. The change in direction and sound is dramatic and quite noticeable between periods. Also making a significant and lasting introduction during this time period is the Fading Captain Series (FCS), Bob’s own imprint that becomes the home of his efforts outside of GBV. It’s hard sometimes to discern why material was released as a proper GBV record as oppposed to something on the FCS. In my opinion, some of Bob’s best work can be found as a FCS release.
