#Storiedeldisonore: l’arresto di #Riina, le stragi del 1993 e la partita della #mafia sul carcere duro

E se di “trattativa“ si sente parlare, non ci si può dimenticare di quel che accadde nel 1993, una anno su cui ancora oggi si chiudono processi e si emettono sentenze. L’anno si apre con l’arresto del ‘capo dei capi’: Totò Riina.

E’ il 13 gennaio, siamo in via Bernini 54, ed è appena partita l’‘operazione Belva’ del nucleo del Crimor guidato da Sergio de Caprio, meglio conosciuto come Capitano Ultimo. Lui e la sua squadra composta da Arciere, Vichingo, Pirata, Oscar, Omar e Ombra hanno individuato la villa di Riina.

Gli uomini di Ultimo per due giorni girano nei quartieri de l’Uditore, della Noce e di Passo di Rigano, con ‘la balena’, cioè il furgone schermato da cui si fanno riprese e si ascoltano le intercettazioni. Il 14 gennaio individuano il cancello da cui esce Ninetta Bagarella, la moglie di Totò Riina. Alle 8.55 del giorno successivo Giuseppe Coldesina, nome in codice Ombra, comunica via radio con Ultimo: «Attenzione, è uscito il nostro amico, il nostro amico Sbirulino, è uscito».

L’amico “Sbirulino” è in realtà Salvatore Biondino, autista di Totò Riina. A bordo della Citroën ZX con Sbirulino c’è proprio lui, “Totò ‘u curtu”, la “belva senza cuore” arrivata ai vertici di Cosa Nostra e latitante da 23 anni. A riconoscerlo è stato Balduccio Di Maggio ex autista di Riina, stipato con l’attrezzatura e il resto della squadra del Crimor nel retro del Ford Transit Blu che porta la scritta “Gambino Impianti”. É Di Maggio ad aver segnalato dalla stazione dei Carabinieri di Novara, dove è stato arrestato l’8 gennaio 1993 per un omicidio a Borgomanero, la probabile ubicazione del ‘covo’ (in realtà una villa con tanto di palme e non distante dal centro di Palermo). Quindici minuti e un chilometro più tardi da via Bernini a Palermo avviene l’arresto del capo dei capi il quale un’ora dopo si ritrova in caserma fotografato sotto la foto del generale Dalla Chiesa.

Di Maggio non è uno qualunque, è infatti quel pentito “eccellente” a fortune alterne che descrisse la scena del famigerato bacio di Riina a Giulio Andreotti. Basta una confidenza di Balduccio di Maggio in una caserma dei Carabinieri di Novara per stanare Riina? Ovviamente no. Si aggiungono così le indagini degli uomini del Ros guidati da Mario Mori e il contesto della famigerata “trattativa” tra Stato e mafia: Riina sarebbe la contropartita offerta da Provenzano per far cessare le stragi e contestualmente salvare Cosa Nostra dalla guerra con lo Stato intavolata dopo gli eccidi di Capaci, via d’Amelio, Roma, Firenze e Milano tra il 1992 e il 1993. Sarebbe stato il capo dei capi primo estensore del cosiddetto ‘papello’, cioè l’elenco delle richieste di Cosa Nostra allo Stato per mettere fine alle stragi in continente”. Senza poi dimenticare la dibattuta e complessa vicenda della mancata perquisizione del covo di Totò ‘u curtu che diede avvio a una sterminata letteratura giornalistica, ancora oggi sulla cresta dell’onda.

Da Giuliano in poi sulle operazioni più importanti dell’antimafia siciliana non sono mai mancati sospetti e veleni, e la vicenda dell’arresto di Totò Riina, avvenuto il 15 gennaio di venti anni fa non ha fatto di certo eccezione. Anche perché a giovare più di tutti di quell’arresto è stato quel Bernardo Provenzano che è stato nei tredici anni successivi uomo di vertice di Cosa Nostra, cambiando radicalmente il volto dell’organizzazione criminale siciliana. Una Cosa Nostra che in questi venti anni non è stata di certo sconfitta, e chi lo sostiene, o lo fa per ignoranza o lo fa in completa malafede sminuendo un problema ancora forte e attuale soprattutto in Sicilia, nonostante qualche difficoltà ‘organizzativa’ in più rispetto al passato.

Nei mesi successivi, e precisamente tra maggio e luglio del 1993 arrivano le stragi di Roma, Firenze e Milano, che provocheranno altre vittime, feriti e danni anche al patrimonio artistico. Proprio in quell’anno si gioca, per la magistratura palermitana, la partita sul 41 bis, ovvero il regime del carcere duro, tornato sulla scena dopo le stragi di Capaci e via d’Amelio. Il ministro della giustizia Giovanni Conso, subentrato a Claudio Martelli, dimissionario a causa dello scandalo per il ‘conto protezione’, non rinnova il carcere duro per oltre 300 detenuti. Sono pochi gli esponenti di spicco di Cosa Nostra presenti in quella lista, ma andava lanciato un “segnale di distensione”: così definiva la non proroga dei 300 41-bis il direttore del DAP Capriotti in una nota del giugno 1993.

Il 10 agosto del 1993 la DIA redige una nota riservata che invia al ministro Mancino: «Gli attentati recenti potrebbero presumibilmente riferirisi alla ricerca di un pactum sceleris attraverso l’elaborazione di un progetto che tenda ad intimidire e distogliere l’attenzione dello Stato per assicurare forme di impunità». La nota prosegue e parla proprio di 41-bis «l’eventuale revoca , anche solo parziale, dei decreti che dispongono l’applicazione dell’articolo 41-bis potrebbe rappresentare il primo concreto cedimento dello Stato intimidito dalla stagione delle bombe».

Una nota comunque da leggere nella sua interezza in grado di aprire uno scenario illuminante per lo stato dell’arte delle indagini dell’epoca e una probabile saldatura, il pactum sceleris, tra poteri criminali presenti sul territorio nazionale.

Conso dice di non aver prorogato i provvedimenti in perfetta solitudine e di non ricordare la nota firmata da Capriotti. Fatto sta che i provvedimenti rientrano e da gennaio 1994 si conclude la strategia stragista di Cosa Nostra con il fallito attentato allo stadio Olimpico di Roma ai danni dei Carabinieri. Successivamente, sempre nel gennaio ’94, vengono arrestati anche i fratelli Graviano, fautori della linea stragista dopo l’arresto di Riina. Arresti che segneranno la fine del sangue in quel terribile biennio, e l’inizio del regno di Bernardo Provenzano. [To be continued...]

Stories of dishonor: the arrest of Riina, the massacres of 1993 and the mafia party on the hard prison

And if we must talk about a "treaty", we can't forget what happened in 1993, an year on which trials are still being celebrated and verdicts still being decided. The year was oppened with the arrest of the "boss of bosses": Totò Riina. It's January the 13th, we're in Bernini Street 54, and the "Belva operation" of the Crimor nucleus has just started under the leadership of Sergio de Caprio, better known as "The Last Captain". He and his team composed by Archer, Viking, Pirate, Oscar, Omar and Shadow have found Riina's villa.

The Last Captain's men scout the neighborhoods of the Uditore, Noce and Passo di Rrigano for two days with the "whale", the van used to record videos and listen to wirings. On January 14th they identify the door from which Ninetta Bagarella comes out, the wife of Totò Rriina. At 8.55 of the following day, Giuseppe Coldesina, codename "Shadow", communicates on radio with the Last: "Attention, our friend is out, our Sbirulino friend, he's out."

The "Sbirulino" friend is actually Salvatore Biondino, the driver of Totò Riina. On board of the Citroën ZX with Sbirulino there's him, "Totò 'u curtu", the "heartless beast", arrived at the top of Cosa Nostra and a 23 year long fugitive. The one who recognized him was Balduccio Di Maggio, former driver of Riina, stuffed with the equipment and the rest of the Crimor team in the back of the Ford Transit with the "Gambino Impianti" sign on it. It was Di Maggio who signaled, at the Carabinieri station of Nnovara, where he was arrested on January the 8th for a homicide at Borgomanero, the probable position of the "den" (in reality a villa with palm trees not very far away from the center of Palermo). Fifteen minutes and one chilometer later from via Bernini in Palermo, the arrest of the boss of bosses, photographed one hour later under the picture of general Dalla Chiesa.

Di Maggio isn't just any criminal, he is the "excellent" collaborator of justice who described the scene of the famous kiss between Riina and Giulio Andreotti. Is one confidence of Balduccio di Maggio in a Carabinieri station sufficient to get Riina out of his hiding place? Obviously not. So the inquiries of the Ros men are added up, guided by Mmario Mori and the contezt of the "treaty" between State and mafia: Riina would be the counterparty offered by Provenzano in order to stop the massacres and at the same time save Cosa Nostra from the war with the State started after the Capaci, via d'Amelio, Rome, Florence and Milan massacres between 1992 and 1993. Apparently it was the boss of bosses who gave out the first "papello", the list of requests of Cosa Nostra from the State in order to stop the massacres in the country". Without forgetting the debated and complex matter of the missed perquisition of the den of Totò 'u curtu, which gave birth to an infinite journalistical literature, still quite popular even today.

From Giuliano onward, on the most important operations of the Sicilian antimafia, there has never been a lack of suspicions and poisons, and the matter of the arrest of Totò Riina, happened on January the 15th of 20 years ago was certainly not an exception. Also because the one who benefited most from that arrest was Bernardo Provenzano, who was the top man of Cosa Nostra in the following 13 years, changing radically the face of the Sicilian criminal organization. A Cosa Nostra that in these twenty years has definitely not been defeated. Those who said it has, do it either out of ignorance or lying, diminishing a problem that is strong and current especially in Sicily, in spite of a few more "organization" difficulties than in the past.

In the following months, and more precisely between May and July 1993, the massacres of Rome, Florence and Milan happened, causing more victims, injuries and damages to the artistical patrimony as well. In that year the game of the 41 bis is played, the hard prison regime, back on the table after the Capaci and via D'Amelio massacres. The minister of Justice Giovanni Conso, who came into the charge after Claudio Martelli, who resigned because of the scandal for the "protection count", doesn't rennovate the hard prison for more than 300 prisoners. There are only a few important exponents of Cosa Nostra in that list, but a "distention signal" had to be launched: that was what it was called by the DAP director Capriotti in anote date June 1993.

On August the 10th 1993, the DIA writes a reserved note sent to minister Mancino: "The recent attacks might presumable be referred to the search of a pactum sceleris through the elaboration of a project that tends to intimidate and distract the State's attention to insure forms of impunity". The note goes on and talks about the 41 bis and the "the possible revocation, even just partial, of the decrees that dispose the application of the 41 bis, might represent the first concrete defeat of a State intimidated by the bombing season."

A note that should still be read in its entirety, capable of opening an illuminating scenario for the state of the art of inquiries at that time and a probable union, a pactum sceleris, between criminal powers present on the national territory.

Conso said he did not delay the measures in perfect solitude, and that he did not remember the note signed by Capriotti. The point is that the measures are actuated and from January 1994 the massacre strategy of Cosa Nostra is concluded with the failed attack at the Olympic Stadium in Rome at the expense of the Carabinieri. Afterwards, in January '94, the Graviano brothers are also arrested, the actuators of the massacre line after Riina's arrest. Arrests that will mark the end of the blood of that terrible two years period, and the beginning of the reign of Bernardo Provenzano.

La notte del 27 maggio nelle campagne di Corigliano Calabro Fabiana Luzzi è stata uccisa dal suo fidanzato, in maniera atroce. Non voglio indugiare nei particolari, non è mio compito, non faccio il giornalista. Però invece chi fa questa mestiere, soprattutto se lavora in una testata regionale, ieri è stato attaccato perché avrebbe "oltraggiato la vittima" e difeso l'assassino.

C'è un ragazzo di 17 anni, reo confesso, di cui sono state messe solo le iniziali, perché deve essere tutelato come prevede la legge e anche la deontologia professionale, ho anche linkato la Carta di Treviso, documento che sancisce le norme sulla riservatezza dei minori. Di lei sono state messe anche le foto, anche dai grandi giornali nazionali, solo che con ritardo, ma non per scelta etica. Sta di fatto che parlare male dei giornalisti è uno sport nazionale molto in voga, soprattutto perché porta molti Like e RT, lo sappiamo. C'è una fortissima confusione fra cronaca, che è mestiere, complesso, difficile, e commento, cosa diversa e i social hanno dato una forte illusione, che il giornalismo, sia un mestiere facile, d'altronde tutti lo confondono con il blogging. Cose diverse.

La cosa però è peggiorata, perché qualcuno, di cui non faccio il nome, ha realizzato un post in cui accusava sempre lo stesso quotidiano regionale di aver messo la foto dell'assassino, quasi per sbaglio. Gli è stato spiegato che non era così, che si trattava di un'immagine in una photogallery del luogo del ritrovamento, basta leggere la didascalia. Invece si continuava a insinuare che si poteva essere spinti all'errore nella lettura, il ragazzo comunque pare fosse un amico della vittima, chiamato per il riconoscimento. Una cosa: se davvero un giornale avesse avuto la foto dell'assassino probabilmente l'avrebbe pubblicata, pixellata, ma l'avrebbe messa.

C'è un errore di fondo sul giornalismo, il credere che si tratti di una missione salvifica e civilizzatrice, molto oltre il reale mestiere. Forse sarebbe il caso di aprire le redazione al pubblico per qualche giorno e far capire davvero come si lavora. Pensavo fosse finita, ma stamane sul blog di uno dei grandi giornali trovo una lettera di una donna calabrese, direttrice delle relazione esterne per una multinazionale, che parla della sua regione come se stessimo parlando di non so che posto, neanche l'Iran. Ora, io, per questioni personali, amicizie e conoscenze, ho molti legami e conoscenze con la Calabria, forse esisteranno situazioni del genere, io non ne conosco, e allora perché quella lettera diventa un'analisi antropologica? L'avesse scritta una studentessa dell'Unical o un'impiegata sarebbe stata cosa diversa,non l'avrebbero pubblicata, perché i social vogliono la sociologia e la psicologia facile, che rafforza i luoghi comuni. E' molto più facile!

Di banalità, anzi di barbare banalità, ne ho lette un'enormità ieri. L'unica richiesta era vendetta. Si chiedeva un rituale violento, un'immersione nel sangue stile Apocalypse Now, perché l'assassino, siccome minorenne, non sarebbe andato in galera. Era agghiacciante vedere persone di ogni classe sociale e professione, pronte alla vendetta nel nome di "se fosse successo a mia figlia o a mia nipote ecc". Signori, se fosse successo ad un vostro caro voi non stareste sui social a straparlare e a giurare sangue! Almeno me lo auguro. Però poi siamo pronti a criticare gli americani che fanno le feste per le esecuzioni, a criticare i musulmani che obbligano il burqa alle donne, ci battiamo il petto, firmiamo petizioni online, poi esplodiamo di rabbia negli status dei social. Un'ipocrisia di fondo si agita nel nostro paese, perché siamo anche quelli che andiamo a litigare con gli insegnanti che hanno dato un'insufficienza ai nostri ragazzi e quelli che scendono dall'auto per un diverbio pronti alle botte. Quel ragazzo è figlio nostro, figlio della rabbia delle nostre risposte e questo non è buonismo, è il fatto che se spegniamo il cervello e accendiamo la vendetta allora autorizziamo il massacro. Perché il giorno dopo arriveranno i parenti del giustiziato e faranno fuori noi e così ad libitum!

Gli unici che davvero potevano avere diritto all'odio in questa situazione erano i genitori di Fabiana. Stamattina la madre ha parlato con l'Arcivescovo di Rossano-Cariati, che si era recato a farle visita e ha dichiarato: "Voglio giustizia per mia figlia". Giustizia. Niente di più, niente di meno. Poi, riferendosi, al ragazzo, il reo-confesso, che deve subire un processo, ha detto: "Anche lui è una vittima". Serve altro?
Altro c'è. A Corigliano, il paese dove è avvenuto l'omicidio, c'è stato un corteo per ricordare Fabiana. In testa c'era uno strisione: "La tua storia meritava più ascolto".

Journalism, social media and barbary

During the night of May 27th, in the countryside of Corigliano Calabro, Fabiana Luzzi was murdered by her boyfriend in an atrocious way. I don't want to go into the details, it's not my job, I'm not a journalist. But those who actually do this job, especially if they're working in a regional newspaper, yesterday was attacked because they "offended the victim" and defended the killer.

There's a 17 year old boy who confessed, whose only initials were published, because he must be protected, as the law and professional code say, I've even linked the Treviso Bill, the document that disciplines privacy norms for minors. Of the girl even pictures have been published, even by big national newspapers, only a bit late - not because of an ethical choice. Point is, speaking ill of journalists is a national sport that is quite popoular, especially because it brings a lot of likes and a lot of retweets, as we know. There's a great confusion between reporting, which is a complex job, and commentary, a completely different thing. Social media have given the strong illusion that journalism is an easy job, and everyone confuses it with blogging. But no: they are two very different things.

What would happen if Internet went through the same things that the commercial TV of the 80s went through? Gossip, light variety shows, decolletees, infotainment, publicity shoved everywhere, dancers, big dancers, ducks, paranormal mysteries, magicians, screaming experts, ufos and human cases, hustlers and domesticated news. Everything that can make the audience grow was (and is) followed with religious attention and it doesn't really matter that the cultural level has gone underground. Different times, different media, one would say, what does the Internet have to do with it?

The space occupied by viral oriented content on the most important mainstream Italian newspapers (Repubblica and Corriere). A blooming of cuddly cats, singing dogs, strange accidents, provoking decolletees (trending topic!), VIP vacations, flirts, finished relationships and betrayals. The total space occupied by these contents?

Is it all here? Not even close. Some disturbing numbers about referrals have been published, which is the source of traffic coming in to great mainstreams. We're talking about 30% of clicks that come froms ocial networks (even though lately we've been hearing a much more tranquilizing 10%). So in online redactions, there are some concept that have become insistent, such as "viral", "sharing". Concept that, and this is the heart of the problem, are entering in the set of criteria used by journalists to define what is or is not "news".

Aamong the news criteria there is also the "potential virality" of a given content. There is the tendency to choose whether to give space or not to a given fact, based on its alleged capacity of becoming viral, which means to be shared and commented on social media and attracting traffic towards the newspaper's website.

So that's how you publish the video of the pianist cat and the photogallery of the naked star and choose with a new perspective what news to give and how to give them (for example breaking the article in dozens of subcontents that are easy to share, and filling them with videos and images). Does anyone notice the similarity between this habit and the desperate research of "easy" TV audience?

The question we should ask, at this point is: what is viral is also high quality, or the great distribution is obtained by exploiting the readers emotions, their instincts, the morbosity of the keyhole and the tendency to disengagement? Be what it may, I believe that online journalists and, why not, also readers (us) should ask themselves whether this drift of the web towards a dimension of infinite infotainment medium strongly characterized as commercial is or isn't a problem, whether it's a concept we should ask ourselves some questions about. Yes, because in this case, would the research, and the more culturally rich content find space? Without even thinking about the utopia of the Web as the medium and humus of a greater collective intelligence than the sum of the single components, who are us. A utopia, in fact.

In view of the more specific integration of the web with the TV, of the massive migration on mobile devices and the announced death of the paper print, the quality of online information is a strategic concept because it tends to represent the quality of information in general. The problem is that the web is now governed by a small oligopoly of huge players (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple). Players that have all the interest in keeping things this way.

I miracoli di @DonAndreaGallo, il primo degli ultimi #DonGallo

Mai e poi mai avrei creduto di poter versare tante lacrime per un uomo di chiesa. Mai. Eppure con Don Gallo è accaduto.

Perché lui, sì, era un uomo di chiesa ma non quella chiesa chiusa nel suo bunker dorato vaticano, ma quella dell'associazionismo sociale, quella attenta ai più bisognosi «gli ultimi» avrebbe detto Don Andrea. Lui era un prete da marciapiede, sì. Quei marciapiedi, brulicanti di storie, di sofferenze, di gioie, di vita. Quei marciapiedi, «palestre di vita» come raccontava Renato Zero, erano il suo curriculum. Prostitute, tossicodipendenti, barboni, transgender, poveri erano le «pietre vive» con cui lui nutriva la propria sete di giustizia, di riscatto sociale. E, a sua volta, nutriva di coraggio e speranza quegli ultimi, dimenticati da tutti, nelle periferie della vita. Quegli ultimi che spesso non volevano avere a che fare con la chiesa, così distante, così lontana dagli emarginati.

Ecco, il primo miracolo di Don Andrea è stato questo: ha insegnato a distinguere la fede dalle gerarchie ecclesiastiche vaticane. Ha insegnato a distinguere buoni e cattivi, anche nella Chiesa. Ha incuriosito non solo cattolici non praticanti, ma anche agnostici e atei, con la sua direzione, ostinata e contraria, alle ingiustizie dei nostri tempi.

L'altro miracolo è accaduto oggi: funerali dove, perlopiù, erano presenti persone che in chiesa non erano mai entrati e/o che a funerali di un religioso mai avrebbero pensato di partecipare. Eppure erano tutti lì: i suoi ultimi, primi, davanti a tutti. Poi No-Global, No-Tav, soubrette, metalmeccanici, giovani dei centri sociali, autorità istituzionali...erano tutti lì, stretti attorno a lui in un colorato abbraccio, sotto il pianto del cielo genovese.

Il più spaesato, quello che sembrava un corpo estraneo in quella chiesa era proprio l'arcivescovo di Genova, il cardinal Angelo Bagnasco. Quasi ignorato e poi contestato apertamente in chiesa, durante le celebrazioni religiose. A testimoniare la profonda frattura tra coloro che lottano per vivere tutti i giorni e le istituzioni ecclesiastiche, più preoccupate dagli equilibri politici interni che dalle sofferenze dei cittadini: il contrario degli insegnamenti di Don Gallo.

E lì si è consumato quello che oserei chiamare "un evento", un miracolo possibile solo per l'effetto della magnifica presenza del Don: per la comunione, il cardinal Bagnasco s'è ritrovato di fronte Vladimir Luxuria (che poi ha spiegato «non prendevo la comunione da quando avevo 17 anni: l'ho fatto per Don Gallo) e le altre transgender aiutate dalla Comunità di Don Gallo. Quasi indifferente, ha offerto «il corpo di Cristo» anche a loro. Con normalità. Come dovrebbe essere per chi professa tutti i giorni «pace e amore» e poi fa distinzioni che incitano alla violenza verbale e fisica.

Una giornata ricca di emozioni, che ha consegnato alla storia la figura di un uomo, Andrea Gallo da Genova - Partigiano e antifascista - diventato prete forse per sbaglio. E sarebbe sbagliato dire che ha «lasciato un vuoto»: lui ci ha lasciato tantissimo. Lo abbiamo visto nella giornata di oggi, dove una città era per metà paralizzata dal fiume colorato di vita che ha voluto dargli l'ultimo saluto terreno. Ma non solo: lui ha insegnato il valore del rispetto. Il valore delle diversità. Il valore della vita propria e altrui. Il saper distinguere fede e gerarchie ecclesiastiche. Ha lasciato una ironia che faceva sorridere ma riflettere, una ironia che colorava le sofferenze rendendole più lievi.

Insomma, un patrimonio umano immenso, impossibile da disperdere, buono solo da difendere e diffondere. Diffondere grazie ai «trafficanti di sogni» che tutti noi dovremmo essere. Perché chi non sogna s'è già arreso, ha smesso di vivere, di parteggiare. E non potrebbe onorare al meglio la memoria di quello che è stato un Uomo con la "U" maiuscola.

Grazie infinite, Don Andrea. Non la dimenticheremo mai.

The miracles of Don Gallo, the first among the last

I never thought I could cry this much for a man of the Church. Never. And yet it happened with Don Gallo. Because he was a man of the Church, but not the Church closed in its golden Vatican bunker: he was the man of a Church that was careful with the needy, the "last", as Don Andrea would have said. He was a priest of the streets, yes. Those streets, filled with stories, suffering, joy, life. Those streets, "schools of life" as Renato Zero said, were his CV. Prostitutes, drug addicts, homeless, transgender, poor, were the "living stones" with which he nurtured his thirst for justice and social redemption. And on the other hand, he fed courage and hope to them, the forgotten, the ones dwelling at the periphery of life. Those "last" who often didn't want anything to do with the Church, so distant, so far away from the emarginates.

So the first miracle of Don Andrea was this: he taught to distinguish faith from the Vatican hierarchy. He taught to tell right from wrong, even inside the Church. He attracted not only non praticant Catholics, but also agnostics and atheists, with his direction, obstinate and contrary, to the injustices of our time.

The other miracle happened the other day: funerals where the most people were people who had never entered a church and/or would never have thought to participate at the funerals of a priest. And yet they were all there: his last, first, in front of everyone else. And No-Global, No-Tav, soubrettes, mechanics, young people of the social centres, institutional authorities... they were all there, around him in a colorful hug, under the tears of the Genoa sky.

The most out of place, the one who seemed a foreign body in that church was the archbishop of Genoa himself, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco. Almost ignored and then openly contested inside the church, during the religious celebrations. Witnessing the profound fracture between those who fight to live every day and Church institutions, more worried by the internal political balances than the suffering of citizens: the exact opposite of Don Gallo's teachings.

And then there was what I would call an "event", a miracle possible only for the effect of the magnificent presence of the Don: for the comunion, Cardinal Bagnasco found in front of him Vladimir Luxuria (who then said: "I didn't get the comunion since I was 17 years old: I did it for Don Gallo) and the other transgenders helped by the community of Don Gallo. Almost indifferent, he offered the "body of Christ" to them as well. With normality. As it should be for those who profess "peace and love" every day, and then makes distinctions that invite to verbal and physical violence.

A day rich of emotions, that has put in history the figure of a man, Andrea Gallo from Genova, partisan and antifascist, who became a priest perhaps by mistake. And it would be wrong to say thar he left a void behind: he left a lot behind. We've seen it yesterday, with a city half paralized by the colorful stream of life who wanted to give him the last goodbye. But not only: he taught the value of respect, the value of diversity. Tthe value of life, our own and other's as well. Knowing how to distinguish between faith and hierarchy. He left an irony that made people smile and think, an irony that colored suffering making them easier to bear.

A huge human patrimony, impossible to lose, that needs to be protected and diffused. Diffused thanks to the "dream dealers" that all of us should be. Because those who don't dream have already given up, have stopped living, taking part. And could not honor the memory of a Man, with a capital M.

Thank you, Don Andrea. We will never forget you.

#Storiedeldisonore: via d'Amelio, quattro processi e poca verità (pt. 2)

Una storia quella della strage Borsellino scritta da Vincenzo Scarantino, delinquente di basso lignaggio criminale, che si rivelerà essere poi falsa, ma che reggerà tre gradi di giudizio portando alla condanna di undici persone, di cui sette all’ergastolo, nell’ambito dei processi Borsellino e Borsellino-bis.

Per anni è la sua la versione ufficiale della strage di via d'Amelio. Nonostante le rimostranze di alcuni pm tra cui Ilda Boccassini, coloro che rappresentano l'accusa nei processi, tra cui anche l'attuale pm titolare dell'inchiesta sulla cosiddetta "trattativa" Antonino di Matteo, danno la patente di credibilità a Vincenzo Scarantino. Scagliandosi anzi contro coloro, in particolare tra i giornalisti, che seminano dubbi sulla credibilità del pentito. Oggi lo chiamano ‘depistaggio‘, mentre fu anche un clamoroso errore investigativo-giudiziario, e le revisioni alle condanne scaturite dalla ricostruzione Scarantino ne sono una ulteriore prova. E' stato Gaspare Spatuzza a consegnare agli inquirenti quella che oggi viene ritenuta la versione più vicina alla verità della preparazione dell'attentato.

Le prime indagini sulla strage di via d’Amelio vennero lasciate in balia della Polizia, in particolare, ad Arnaldo La Barbera, superpoliziotto di cui la procura di Caltanissetta aveva stima e fiducia. Purtroppo la sua versione non si saprà mai. Morirà stroncato da un tumore nel 2002, periodo in cui la storia di questa strage era ancora quella di Scarantino.

Di certo quel 19 luglio del 1992 e nelle giornate immediatamente successive le disattenzioni furono molte, e le amnesie dei vent'anni successivi hanno contribuito a intorbidire acque già scure. Basti pensare al trasporto dei reperti rinvenuti sul luogo della strage all’interno di sessanta sacchi neri spediti agli uffici romani dell’FBI. Che dentro quei sacchi non ci fosse anche la famigerata agenda rossa su cui Borsellino nelle ultime settimane prendeva appunti riguardanti le sue indagini?

Dopo la morte di Falcone e quella immediatamente successiva di Borsellino, le misure straordinarie del contrasto alla criminalità organizzata, tra cui il ripristino del carcere duro, mettono Cosa Nostra in agitazione, che insanguinerà anche Roma, Firenze e Milano nel 1993. Si fa strada l’ombra di una ‘trattativa‘ per fermare il terrorismo mafioso e per arrivare a quel Totò Riina, imprendibile boss di Cosa Nostra, e ritenuto il capo dei capi.

Ma di ‘trattative‘ ne è piena la storia d’Italia, e, senza ipocrisie, pure quella delle investigazioni antimafia. Non stupisca quindi, che due appartenenti ai Reparti Operativi Speciali dei Carabinieri come Mario Mori e Giuseppe de Donno, siano andati a cercare il contatto proprio con quel Vito Ciancimino, ex sindaco mafioso di Palermo, legato a doppio filo al gotha di Cosa Nostra e a quello della Democrazia Cristiana.

Il baratto per fermare la stagione delle bombe starebbe nel cosiddetto ‘papello‘, altro oggetto misterioso di quella stagione controversa, che la collaborazione del figlio di don Vito Ciancimino, Massimo, non ha contribuito a chiarire, nonostante abbia fatto emergere alcuni elementi rimasti prima nell’ombra.

«Quando non si può più fare finta di niente - ha spiegato più volte Giuseppe di Lello, uno dei componenti del fu pool antimafia di Falcone e Borsellino - allora lo stato interviene»: trecento detenuti mafiosi vengono trasportati all’alba del 20 luglio 1992 nelle prigioni dell’Asinara e Pianosa, per essere sottoposti al regime del carcere duro, il cosiddetto 41-bis. Dieci giorni più tardi sbarcarono in Sicilia i primi contingenti dell’esercito italiano per l’operazione “Vespri siciliani”. Occupano e proteggono gli obiettivi ritenuti sensibili, rappresentando un eccezionale impiego dell’esercito dentro i confini nazionali. [to be continued...]

Stories of dishonor: via d'Amelio, four trials and no certainties

A story, the one of the Borsellino massacre, written by Vincenzo Scarantino, a low criminal profile offender, which will be soon revealed to be false, but that will hold for three degrees of trials leading to the conviction of eleven people, of which 7 to life in prison, in the Borsellino and Borsellino-bis trials.

For years his was the official version of the d'Amelio street massacre. In spite of the doubts of some PMs among which Ilda Bboccassini, the ones who represent the State in the trials, among which the current PM working on the so called "treaty" Antonino di Matteo, give the sigil of credibility to Vincenzo Scarantino. Accusing those who, especially among journalists, diffuse doubts on the credibility of the collaborator of justice. Today they call it "screening", but it was also a huge judiciary mistake, and the revisions to the convictions derived from the Scarantino reconstruction are another proof of that. It was Gaspare Spatuzza who gave the investigators the version which is now considered to be nearest to the truth in the preparation of the attack.

The first inquiries on the d'Amelio street massacre were left to the Police, and in particular to Arnaldo La Barbera, policeman that the Caltanissetta department trusted and respected. Unfortunately we'll never know his version. He died because of a tumor in 2002, a time when the official version was still the one of Scarantino.

Surely on that July 19th of 1992 and in the days after, careless mistakes were many, and the amnesia of the following 20 years have contributed to muddy waters that were already quite dark. Just think about the transportation of evidence found on the spot inside sixty black sacks sent to the Rome offices of the FBI. Is it possible that missing from them was the red notebook on which Borsellino used to write his notes on the inquiries in the last weeks of his life?

After Falcone's death and the one, shortly after, of Borsellino, extraordinary measures against organized crime, among which the return of "hard prison", put Cosa Nostra in turmoil, and will make Rome, Florence and Milan bleed in 1993. The shadow of a "treaty" to stop mafia terrorism appears, and of course to catch Totò Riina, the unapprehendable boss of Cosa Nostra, considered to be the boss of bosses.

But the history of Italy is full of "treaties", and without hypocrisy, also the one of the antimafia investigations. We shouldn't be too amazed by the fact that two members of the Special Operative Department of the Carabinieri such as Mario ori and Ggiuseppe de Donno have tried a contact with that same Vito Ciancimino, former mafia mayor of Palermo, linked to Cosa Nostra and Democrazia Cristiana at the same time.

The exchange to stop bombs was the so called "papello", another misterious object of that controverse time, that the collaboration with don Vito Ciamcimino's son Massimo, hasn't contributed in clearing any better, in spite of the fact that it has managed to make a few elements emerge, that were previously left in the shadows.

"When you can't pretend it's nothing - Giuseppe di Lello has explained several times, one of the components of the former antimafia pool of Falcone and Borsellino - then the State intervenes": three hundred mafia convicts are transported on July 20th 1992 in the prisons of Asinara and Pianosa, in order to be put under the regime of "hard prison" the so called 41-bis. Ten days later the first contingents of the Italian army come to Sicily for the "Vespri siciliani" operation. They occupy and protect delicate targets, and represent an exceptional use of the amy inside national boundaries.

#Balotelli: simbolo anti-razzista nell'Italia delle etichette

Balotelli-razzismo, Saviano-mafia, Schettino-Concordia. L’elenco delle etichette potrebbe continuare all’infinito.

Personaggi che diventano simbolo, consapevolmente o inconsapevolmente, di qualcosa di più ampio che rischia di ridursi, personalizzarsi, perdere valore. I buu razzisti fanno male, ma non solo quando a riceverli è il calciatore Mario Balotelli. Parlare della mafia è un obbligo, un dovere (a mio avviso dovrebbe essere istituito un programma su mafia e antimafia già dalle scuole elementari) ma non solo quando a scriverne è Roberto Saviano. E fare giustizia di uno dei disastri più gravi degli ultimi anni, e cioè la nave Costa Concordia naufragata all’Isola del Giglio, in Toscana, è una necessità ma non deve diventare notizia solo quando si parla dell’ex comandante Francesco Schettino.

Sono solo tre esempi, tre nomi tra tanti. Tre etichette di cui l’Italia, però, non sembra poter fare a meno. Ed è così che nei giorni subito dopo il naufragio della nave, che il 13 gennaio 2012 ha provocato 32 vittime innocenti e che tuttora giace al largo della piccola isola toscana, è subito nata la contrapposizione. Schettino il cattivo contro De Falco (l’uomo del “Vada a bordo, cazzo!”) diventato l’eroe di turno. Non una novità, ma un modo di vedere il mondo. Così in politica non si vota per il Pdl ma per Berlusconi, non per il Movimento 5 Stelle ma per Grillo. Il Paese ha bisogno di simboli a cui aggrapparsi, creare dicotomie a cui rifarsi. Paralizzarsi su opposizioni che rischiano, però, solo di creare falsi modelli, falsi miti che spostano l’attenzione dal problema più ampio.

Prendiamo Balotelli, ad esempio, diventato il simbolo della lotta al razzismo. Giusto, giustissimo lasciare il campo quando si è sommersi dai buu razzisti. Ed è giusta anche la presa di posizione del ministro per l’integrazione Cecile Kyenge che, dopo i fatti di Firenze dove il Milan è stato contestato alla stazione di Campo di Marte dopo la partita vinta contro il Siena il calciatore del Milan aveva ricevuto, da parte di alcuni tifosi, degli insulti con ululati razzisti: “Non tutti i cori sono razzismo - ha detto il ministro - bisogna essere lucidi per capire quando si parla di razzismo, quando di sport e di una sconfitta sportiva, quando di altre motivazioni".

E’ giusto, quindi, valutare caso per caso per evitare personalismi. E per evitare prese di posizione come quella del tecnico boemo Zdenek Zeman: "Chi fa questi gesti è gente sciocca che si scarica così, però ripeto che per me non è razzismo, è sciocchezza, certa gente non sa nemmeno cosa sia il razzismo" - ha affermato Zeman - "Certamente i comportamenti di Balotelli non sono sempre da esempio, nè per i giovani nè per i vecchi, e ciò influisce".

Un ragionamento, però, sbagliato su più fronti. Il razzismo è figlio dell’ignoranza, della “sciocchezza” e affermare che Balotelli in qualche modo è un provocatore è un grave errore. Per dirla con le parole di Cesare Prandelli, l’allenatore della Nazionale italiana, “è come dire che le donne subiscono violenza perché molte se la vanno a cercare”.

Balotelli the anti-racism symbol in the Italy of labels

Balotelli-racism, Saviano-mafia, Schettino-Concordia. The list of labels could go on forever.

Characters who become symbols, whether with awareness or not, of something that's much bigger and that risks to shrink, personalize, lose value. The racist booing hurts, but not only when the one receiving it is soccer player Mario Bbalotelli. Talking about mafia is a must (I believe a program about mafia and antimafia should be instituted since elementary school) but not only when the one writing about it is Roberto Saviano. And making justice out of one of the most devastating disasters of the last years, when the Costa Concordia sunk in front of the Giglio island in Tuscany, is a necessity - but it mustn't become news only when talking about ex commander Francesco Schettino.

These are three examples, three names among many. Three labels that Italy doesn't seem to be able to get rid of. And that's how in the days right after the Concordia shipwreck, which on January the 13th 2012 has caused 32 innocent victims and that is still laying on its side just next to the small Tuscany island, the counterposition was instantly created. Schettino the bad gu against De Falco, who has become the hero. Not something new, but a way of seeing the world. Like in politics, you don't vote for PDL but for Bberlusconi, not for the M5S but for Grillo. The country needs symbols to cling on, create dychotomies for safety. Paralizing on oppositions that risk to create false models, false myths that shift attention from the bigger problem.

Let's take Balotelli, for example, the man who has become the symbol of the fight against racism. Right, very right to leave the field when you're overwhelmed by racist booing. And Cecile Kyenge's position after the Florence facts where the Milan has been contested at the Campo di Marte train station after the game won against Siena, the Milan soccer player had received insults with racist shouts: "Not all shouts are racist - the minister has said - you must be very clear in understanding when you talk about racism, when about sports and when about a sports defeat, or other reasons." It's right to evaluate case by case to avoid personalisms. And to avoid positions like the one of technician Zdenek Zeman: "Who does these things are stupid people who relax like this, it's not racism for me, it's stupidity, some people don't even know what racism is" - Zeman stated - "Of course Balotelli's behavior is not always an example, not for young people nor for older people, and that is influential".

A reasoning that is wrong on more than one level. Racism is son of ignorance, of "stupidity" and stating that Balotelli is somewhat of a provocator is a big mistake. To say it with Cesare Prandelli's words, the trainer of the Italian National team, "it's like saying that women are victims of violence because many of them are looking for it".

Dal Salone del Libro #SalTo2013, una vecchia storia comunista...e calabrese

Il Salone di Torino 2013 si è chiuso. Record di visitatori e di acquisti. Una buona cosa, soprattutto perché permetterà al capoluogo piemontese di conservare la fiera e di non vederla trasferita nella nuova fiera di Rho vicino Milano. Non sarebbe più la stessa cosa.

Ci sono due cose che si dovrebbero migliorare: l'organizzazione, che in certi parti non è impeccabile, anzi; poi si dovrebbero sfrondare alcuni elementi di paraletteratura. Insomma, capisco Masterchef, ma quante dimostrazioni di cucina ci debbono essere in un Salone del Libro? Però si fanno anche degli incontri interessanti. Recentemente mi ha capitato nella mani un libro, si chiama Blocco 52 di Lou Palanca. Si tratta di scrittura collettiva, con un nome fittizio che viene da un omaggio a Luther Blisset, e a Massimo Palanca, grande centravanti del Catanzaro anni '70, l'uomo che segnava da calcio d'angolo. Ma non è un libro che parla di calcio.

Se ne sono accorti i Wu Ming, che li hanno intervistati nel loro blog, in maniera approfondita, soprattutto sulla narrazione ma anche sulle caratteristiche "calabresi" del libro. Perché diciamolo la Calabria non va di moda, nonostante fosse la Regione Ospite d'Onore al Salone del libro di quest'anno, ma in fondo per la maggior parte degli italiani ha prodotto solamente ndrangheta e anduja, mentre c'è tanto altro, come un meraviglioso termine, ciotia, che ho usato oggi per un post sul mio blog. Poi che questa organizzazione criminale sia radicata e ramificata non nel resto di Italia, ma del mondo, che quello sia un salame piccante tipico solo di una piccola parte della regione, non conta. Perché? Perché non va di moda e perché i calabresi, che hanno un meraviglioso senso di appartenenza, non sanno gestire la propria immagine. Io ho scelto di parlare di questo libro perché mi è piaciuta e perché racconta una storia dimenticata, la storia di un ex funzionario del Pci, ucciso la sera del 1 Aprile 1965, mentre rientrava a casa sua, a Catanzaro, colpito da cinque pallattole alla schiena e due alla testa.

Luigi Silipo (nella foto) è un comunista, figlio di un gioiellerie, che arriva ai piani alti di Botteghe Oscure, quando il Pci era il "grande Pci", il partito e non una formazione di centrosinistra. E' un uomo serio, colto, con una forte dialettica, ma che a un certo punto viene spostato d'incarico, forse per le sue simpatie ingraiane, o forse perché non è convinto del nuovo corso che sta per intraprendere. Così diventa il segretario del movimento dei braccianti, sempre con forza e anche lì comincia ad essere scomodo, spesso non solo per i latifondisti ma per il suo partito. Una storia che mescola trame che passano per Roma, Catanzaro e Praga, che intrecciano politica, famiglie, speranze e illusioni. Una storia vera, che nonostante i grandi funerali, parteciparono i vertici del partito, compreso l'attuale Presidente Napolitano. Ma in poco tempo tutto fu dimenticato, abbandonato, il nome di Silipo quasi impossibile da fare ad alta voce. Ci sono già le avvisaglie di un Partito che abbraccerà i ceti dei professionisti, cercando di non perdere la base operaia, ma lasciando gli agrari al loro destino, c'è la Calabria che si prepara ad esplodere, i moti di Reggio Calabria saranno 5 anni dopo, ci sono gli scontri ancora con i missini e la divisione coi socialisti. Ci sono anche le donne, quelle del sud, diverse da come ce le hanno sempre presentate. Ci sono uomini e donne, con le loro storie, i loro errori e le occasioni perdute. Tutti i protagonisti si ritrovano nel presente. Almeno solo per ricordare quello che è successo.Una strana storia. Una storia del passato, ma neanche tanto. Resta il fatto che c'è un Sud del nostro paese che è una terra straniera, nascosta, o meglio che è stata nascosta e di cui qualcuno non vuole che si parli ancora oggi.

Mass Age Mess Age: la difesa del web libero, che non è libero

Nelle ultime settimane si è tornato a parlare di “bavaglio alla rete” dopo l'ormai famigerata intervista di Repubblica a Laura Boldrini, che denunciava abusi e minacce subite da una massa di squilibrati via web (lo stesso squilibrio, sia chiaro, che spinge da anni a utilizzare Twitter e Facebook per inviare auguri ferali agli esponenti delle parti politiche opposte).

Sono seguite una serie di proposte surreali culminate con l'annuncio del comandante della polizia Postale di voler istituire delle “volanti” che faranno la ronda sui social network per prevenire abusi (buona fortuna).

Intanto i difensori della libertà del web accusano le istituzioni italiane di cogliere l'occasione per attuare le sempre latenti volontà censorie e – non sempre a torto – di scarsa conoscenza del mezzo.

La realtà dei fatti, però, non è così semplice. Come ricorda Matteo Flora, in Italia la censura su siti web esiste già dal 2006 e fu allora accettata pressoché nel silenzio: “Nel momento in cui state leggendo, – scrive Flora - in Italia sono censurati 5.657 siti web, di cui 4322 su direttive dei Monopoli di Stato, 1199 dal CNCPO (Centro nazionale per il contrasto alla pedo-pornografia su Internet, NdA) e 136 con singoli provvedimenti dell’autorità giudiziaria o di organi amministrativi”.

Ma il web 'libero' non è soltanto fatto di siti che possono essere oscurati direttamente dalle autorità italiane. Per moltissimi, anzi, l'esperienza del web – e degli abusi e delle manifestazioni di idiozia - è mediata quasi totalmente da piattaforme che operano sotto giurisdizioni estere (quasi sempre USA), che adottano policy estremamente mutevoli e spesso poco trasparenti, se non vessatorie nei confronti degli utilizzatori.

E qui, ci troviamo di fronte a un doppio paradosso, che mescola le carte in tavola.

Primo paradosso del web libero: la censura dei cretini

“CI IMPEGNIAMO A MANTENERE FACEBOOK ATTIVO, ESENTE DA ERRORI E SICURO, MA L'UTENTE ACCETTA DI UTILIZZARLO A SUO RISCHIO E PERICOLO.” (Dai termini di servizio di Facebook)

A Google, Facebook o Twitter (per citare solo alcuni nomi) affidiamo i nostri dati personali, la nostra identità in rete e spesso il nostro lavoro. Le condizioni a cui concediamo tali dati sono un argomento che troppo spesso ignoriamo, salvo poi cadere dalle nuvole e gridare all'abuso quando ne subiamo le conseguenze.

“Google potrebbe anche interrompere la fornitura di Servizi all’utente oppure stabilire nuovi limiti di accesso ai Servizi in qualsiasi momento” recita uno dei tanti termini di utilizzo che sottoscriviamo senza leggere, nella fretta di utilizzare Gmail.

Il primo paradosso del web libero è questo: per scomparire o subire limitazioni da una di queste piattaforme basta a volte che qualche utente faccia una segnalazione – e spesso non importa se risponde al vero - o che uno stupido algoritmo rilevi la probabilità – non la certezza - di una violazione di una policy che non è dato conoscere.

Succede: mentre scrivo, apprendo che la visione di un video di un mio cliente su YouTube è stata limitata a un pubblico maggiorenne, su segnalazione della community (cioè gli utenti), sebbene non contenga alcuna oscenità o richiamo alla violenza. Possibilità di riesaminare la posizione? Non contemplata.

La scorsa settimana, l'account Facebook di Alfredo Accatino, noto e stimato pubblicitario, è scomparso per alcuni giorni con tutti i contenuti. Lo stesso è accaduto alla community Indigeni Digitali lo scorso marzo. Profilo e community ripristinati dopo alcuni giorni, ma senza alcuna spiegazione sui motivi da parte del servizio.

Quanto poi alla libertà che tali piattaforme si riservano sui nostri contenuti, su cui spesso conservano diritti anche dopo la cancellazione, invito a dare una lettura al sito Terms of service: didn't read, che offre una panoramica completa ed esaustiva.

Secondo paradosso: acchiappa il tuo stalker

Perlomeno, direte voi, se qualcuno pubblicherà le mie immagini private taggate con il mio nome e cognome, sarà facile segnalare l'abuso. E qui ci scontriamo con il secondo paradosso, perché rischiamo di trovarci come l'agrimensore K. alle prese con il Castello. Massimo Melica ha esposto le enormi difficoltà operative di chi si trova ogni giorno a tutelare le vittime di questi abusi via web, sia per la ben nota lentezza della giustizia italiana, sia perché si dovrà contattare i gestori delle piattaforme per chiedere – e non sempre ottenere – che si blocchi la diffusione dei contenuti.

Emerge così la questione delicata del diritto all'oblio e il secondo paradosso appare – per così dire – ancora più chiaro: se è possibile essere baditi da Facebook o da Google senza conoscerne il motivo, i contenuti diffamatori a nostro nome possono rimanere in rete per sempre, magari nel frattempo scaricati da altri utenti e ripubblicati su altri profili. Evidentemente c'è qualcosa di distorto nel sistemi di algoritmi e segnalazioni.

La faccenda sfugge poi di mano quando al singolo stalker si aggiunge l'accanimento dello sciame umano, come nel tristissimo caso di Amanda Todd, narrata da Giovanni Scrofani su Datamanager, vessata via web e fisicamente dai propri persecutori, ma diventata anche contenuto virale in rete, oggetto di giudizi impietosi e di commenti aberranti da parte di propri coetanei, “condannata e spinta al suicidio, con la facilità con cui si commenta uno status su Facebook”.

Conclusione provvisoria

Chi o cosa è libero? Chi o cosa dà le carte al tavolo? Un algoritmo. Un delatore in vena di burle. La necessità di punirne uno per tutelarne migliaia, o meglio per tutelare sé stessi. Il caso. L'errore. La probabilità. L'imitazione. Più probabilmente, l'interazione tra tutto ciò.

Mi pare sia chiaro che la realtà dei fatti non corrisponda alla contrapposizione schematica censura/non-censura.

In gioco c'è la nostra libertà, le nostre identità, i nostri diritti: online e offline, non è più il caso di fare differenza. Il web, in quanto mezzo, non ha colpe in sé, ma è un'estensione delle nostre azioni, di cui non abbiamo ancora sviluppato la consapevolezza delle conseguenze né dei limiti a cui sono sottoposte.

Indagarli è una sfida da cui nessuno, per anzianità di servizio, può dirsi esente.

Mass Age Mess Age: the defense of free web, which isn't free

Recently during one of my lessons, I was explaining to my students that "sharing is one of the things we can do that triggers the virality of content, along with the vote (read "like" or "+1") and the comment."

As I was talking I realized, however, that the concept of sharing that I was explaining was purely mechanical and emotional: a couple of clicks, perhaps a line to explain why we like or dislike that content and that's it. It is all very far from what, just a few years a go, made the "philosophy of the Internet".

Giuseppe Granieri, in his Blog generation, explains very well how bloggers were dedicated to finding "interesting content on the web and sharing it with others". A sometimes weary work of research, selection and publication of new knowledge. The web itself, not Arpanet but Internet itself, was born to connect Universities and make knowledge available. The goal was the much advertised "collective intelligence, superior to the simple sum of the ones composing it". In essence, the concept was that reasoning together, putting intelligences together, would have brought to a collective enrichment that was impossible to reach separately.

Coming back to what I was explaining to my students, it appears obvious that it's not like that anymore. We share in the optic of the simple transmission of an information, not very different from the tendency, during friends reunions, of saying "do you know what happened or what Tizio or Caio did"? and to accompany this information only with emotional instinctive expressions: nice ugly, funny, surprising, incredible, and so on. The torsion of the concept of sharing, oeprated by social networks, has taken it much nearer what is commonly called Gossip. More than "Share", the Facebook button should be called "Transmit" or "Whisper".

It's the word of mouth dynamic, someone will answer me. In the end, the web is nothing more than the digital projection of human society and thus replicates its dynamics, whether they be nice or ugly. Here the problem isn't that the phenomenon is ugly or beautiful, right or wrong, it's that it doesn't take us anywhere, and actually only creates more problems, starting for example from the scarce reliability of information travelling on the web. The gossip dynamics doesn't include a verification of the veridicity of information per se, nor any preoccupation in terms of responsibility of the fact that we're actually publishing something.

If we add the times of the Web and the dynamics of people's attention, it appears pretty obvious that, in the end, we react in an instinctive, immediate way, trnsmitting emotions and not "knowledge" and that we tend to avoid complex content. This post itself, for example, will surely be too long for the majority of people who will see it.

But what happened to the good Jon Postel, true founding father of the Internet, who in 1981 formulated the law which carries his name and that describes the social function of the web: "Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others", which means that online it is necessary to be careful, and thus rigorous, respectful, exact and precise regarding what we propose to others. And we must be liberal, which means open to listen and favor and respect the freedom of thought and initiative of others in the act of receiving.

In substance Postel said that the web is a social ecosystem in which the engine is the communication based on exchange, listening, respect of one another, bringing value, interaction. Who enters and communicates online has the responsibility for what they say and does, but also a responsibility towards the others, which is the taslk of interacting, listening, sharing. Sharing in a view of added value, not gossip.

This law is now dead, on a web where billions of contents flow and in which the virality is a tool that is more and more encouraged for commercial reasons, and where even the so called influencers are measured not on the quality of what they say, but on how well they can engage their communities: visibility before everything else.

I read myself and I have the sensation of having written like those nice old people who say "well, when I was young things were quite different". Might be, but I continue to think that this gossipy web, more and more similar to the commercial television is, more than anything, a huge missed opportunity.

#Terremoto in #Emilia: 365 giorni e una manciata di ore dopo

365 giorni e una manciata di ore, nel momento in cui leggerete questo post. E' questo il tempo trascorso da quella notte del 20 maggio 2012, quando la terra d'Emilia tremò la prima volta scuotendo i letti di chi pensava di vivere in una zona a bassissima sismicità. Io ero tra loro.

Un anno in cui la nostra terra, la mia terra, ha tenuto botta, come recitavano, in una sorta di tin bòta!
invocazione a noi stessi, i braccialetti che dopo le scosse di quella maledetta settimana hanno cominciato ad agghindare i polsi di molti abitanti:

E in un modo o nell'altro abbiamo tenuto botta, nonostante tutto, nonostante la terra continui ancora a tremare. C'è ancora molto da fare, (anche se tanto è stato fatto) te ne accorgi parlando con la gente delle zone colpite, ma i segni del terremoto si cominciano a notare meno. O forse siamo noi, noi che non vogliamo vederli. Come quello ferito che finge di non notare la vistosa cicatrice, per sentirsi normale, per tirare avanti. Non lo so.

La regione Emilia Romagna intanto pochi giorni fa ha pubblicato un video di 14 minuti in cui riepiloga lo stato dei lavori e quel che è stato fatto, qualche numero.

Proprio l'altro giorno ho finito di risistemare la pesante copertura del camino. Con le due violente scosse era ruotata di 30 gradi rispetto al suo asse. Se ne era stata lì per tutto l'inverno, in cima a tutto, simbolo di un evento che non avrei mai voluto vivere. Ogni volta che la fissavo la mente tornava a quei giorni. Ora, anche se l'effetto è puramente placebo, guardarla mi da un senso di normalità. Sono piccole cose, ma aiutano.

Qualcuno ha detto e dice che il terremoto era prevedibile, che c'era una carta un po' allarmante, di qualche mese prima, che faceva riferimento ad una attività minore, che comunque aveva messo in allerta gli organi preposti al monitoraggio. E pure il giudice Grieco, quello che segue le indagini sul Terremoto dell'Aquila dice che, ad esempio, l'evento abruzzese non era affatto imprevedibile. Lo ha scritto qualche giorno fa nelle motivazioni della sentenza. Ma ad oggi, rimane inutile polemica, ed scientificamente non provata la prevedibilità di un determinato evento sismico. Per ora. Almeno così ci dicono.

Inutile non è invece la prevenzione, l'educazione, i controlli e la comunicazione alle norme di sicurezza, di edificazione in materia antisismica. Sia nell'ambito privato che in quello lavorativo. Tra il 20 e il 29 maggio delle 28 vittime, in maggioranza erano operai caduti sui rispettivi posti di lavoro. Costruzioni al di fuori di ogni criterio antisismico, si capirà poi. Ma oltre i posti di lavoro viene inevitabile pensare agli edifici scolastici che in molte parti del paese versano in uno stato di degrado e fatiscenza. In questi giorni si è parlato di evitare tagli alla scuola: invece di evitare, investiamo nella messa in sicurezza di questi edifici, prima di tutto. Passaggio indispensabile in un paese ad elevata sismicità come il nostro dove, lo si è visto, anche in un posto comunemente ritenuto a bassa intensità sismica può accadere l'impensabile.

Mentre butto giù queste righe ripenso a quei giorni, e ripenso a qualche anno prima, quando dopo il sisma aquilano mi chiesi come ci si dovesse sentire. I due eventi non sono forse paragonabili. Ogni storia è a se. Ma qualche similitudine forse, negli stati d'animo. Oggi capisco ancora di più l'urgenza disperata di quel grido, delle proteste, dello sconforto, della indignazione, della fretta di quelle terre: vogliamo ripartire, non lasciateci soli.

Perché è davvero un nulla, dopo le photo opportunity e le promesse, rimanere impantanati in un dramma nel dramma: l'immobilità di un tempo che non sembra riavviarsi più. Ma qua, nonostante gli orologi delle torri campanarie si siano fermati alle 04:03:52 del 20 maggio 2012, grazie alla cocciutaggine che indipendentemente da tutto hanno fatto spesso l'impossibile, almeno nelle nostre menti, nei nostri cuori, nelle nostre mani le lancette hanno ripreso a girare per molti. Ora è tempo di rimettere in moto anche quelle di chi è rimasto fermo. Perché è questo che fa una comunità.

Earthquake in Emilia: 365 days and a few hours later

Here is the piece, actually pieces of rubble that fall on me (not so much stuff, to be honest, but enough to make you say a couple of epic swearings). Morale, I thought it's not my skill to bring me on the piece, it's the piece that's coming and sometimes it's quite scary, a fear that goes bone deep and makes you stay focused. Like at 4 a.m., when the instinct says run outside on the stairs but the brain tells you to wait until it's done before you do something stupid. The brain won, in those long seconds, 10, 15, I don't even know how many.

What I do know is the noise that throws you out of bed without giving you the time to understand, the earth that's shaking hard, the 9 stories above you that dance in the air while the walls crack and the rubble falls and you ask yourself: will the shack up there hold? Yes, it holds. Then you go out on the streets, in front of the fountain Graziosi and you look into the eyes of the others. You see the young ones, a bit frightened, while the older, the grandparents, those go back inside after a short while. People who have seen stuff in their lives, that don't get scared that easily and that a bit you envy for how the hell they do it.

Then you take the mobile phone and start looking at the tweets. When you start reading you see updates from Padova, Milano, from Veneto to Trentino to Liguria. You wonder, but don't realize, you don't think you're the epicentre (you never do, you always refuse that thought, it has to be that way, for hope), but you think that wherever it was, the place will be completely destroyed. It's not, but already there are damages, deaths, wounded, and 3000 evacuated people. You look for information on media, nothing, you refresh, nothing. Only the people, the people on the streets, actually spread information. Good thing there's the people. You get on your car, and from Modena you go home, towards Soliera, in the general direction of the epicentre. The street is empty, the fog is going up together with the dawn that brings rain. The rain, you think, it always rains after an earthquake. Because the injustice complicates the lives of evacuated and rescuers.

At one point the brain connects. Tomorrow I have a specialistic visit (gastroscopy) at the hospital of Mirandola, one of the towns that has been hit, and quite near the epicentre. I call, they tell me to call tomorrow. Here the damages are serious, we're evacuating part of the hospital, we're waiting to understand whether the structure can be used or not. I say thanks, and hang up. I've been up since 4 a.m. I write down these lines confusely to fix the moment, while with one eye on the web, and the other on the lamp.

Insieme a Michael Brandvold, esperto di comunicazione e marketing nel settore musicale e dell'intrattenimento per adulti, abbiamo affrontato alcuni temi come la gestione delle criticità online, le modalità per sfruttare i social media per aumentare le proprie vendite e come i VIP dovrebbero interagire con i propri fan.

Abbiamo chiesto a Michael come ha iniziato a occuparsi di marketing nel settore della musica: ha iniziato giovanissimo, con la radio del college, e poi ha proseguito lavorando e promuovendo band e organizzando eventi. La svolta è arrivata quando ha cominciato ad appassionarsi di Macintosh ed HTML, all'epoca una novità assoluta. Si è proposto dunque di costruire un sito web per imparare come si fa, ed essendo un grande fan dei KISS, ha scelto proprio loro come tema centrale.

Pubblicato nel 1995, il sito ha avuto un successo enorme, tanto che qualche anno più tardi Gene Simmons lo chiamò per costruire il sito ufficiale della band. Trasferitosi a San Francisco, Michael si è occupato a tempo pieno della costruzione, lancio e gestione di pagine web per band e celebrità, dai KISS a Britney Spears, da Madonna agli U2 passando per Ozzy Osbourne.

Lo scopo principale di questi siti era di vendere merchandise online, una volta che tutti i tour erano finiti e le vendite ai concerti venivano dunque a scarseggiare.

Abbiamo chiesto in quale modo sia cambiata l'interazione con i fan con l'avvento dei social media, e secondo Michael si è trattato di un cambiamento epocale, senza dubbio per il meglio. Prima di avere a disposizione i social media, interagire con i fan era molto difficile e dispendioso in termini di tempo, anche perché molto spesso si voleva evitare l'interazione diretta con i fan per ovvi motivi di privacy e sicurezza. Con Facebook e Twitter si può dialogare direttamente con i fan in tempo reale ed avere una protezione completa: certo, dipende sempre da quali e quante informazioni si decide di divulgare su queste piattaforme.

Quanto all'aspetto delle vendite, secondo Michael non dovrebbe mai essere il primo motivo per cui si è online. Non dovrebbe mai essere il motivo principale per aprire una pagina Facebook, un account Twitter o un sito web: le vendite verranno da sole una volta instaurato il rapporto con i fan. Bisogna semplicemente stare online e parlare, perché al centro dei social media c'è proprio questo: parlare e ascoltare, conversare con gli utenti.

Le aziende hanno paura di una presenza sui social media perché temono quello che i clienti hanno da dire. Nel caso invece degli artisti, la questione si fa più delicata: bisogna, secondo Michael, non prenderla mai sul personale. Tutti hanno un'opinione, e non esiste opinione giusta o sbagliata: sono solo opinioni. Quello che non bisogna fare mai è cancellare i commenti che non sono graditi, in quanto si otterebbe l'effetto contrario.

Abbiamo chiesto a Michael come si concilia il social media marketing con l'industria dell'intrattenimento per adulti. Si tratta senz'altro di una sfida: Facebook ha delle policy molto stringenti, e non permette nemmeno la pubblicazione di link che puntano a siti con contenuti per adulti. Quello che si può fare è promuovere il “glamour”, e costruire una relazione con gli utenti, in quanto vendere e promuovere il contenuto in sé non è assolutamente possibile.

Quando si parla invece di celebrità su Twitter, bisogna distinguere: ci sono alcuni VIP che si avvicinano per la prima volta a questi mezzi, e non li usano al meglio per promuovere le proprie attività o creare conversazione con i fan. Le star nel mondo dell'intrattenimento per adulti, invece, sono un ottimo esempio di utilizzo “virtuoso” dei social: conversano, rispondono, parlano di qualsiasi cosa, e i fan ne sono estasiati.

Together with Michael Brandvold, communication and marketing expert in the music and adult entertainment industry, we tackled a few topics such as crisis management online, using social media to increase sales and how VIPs should interact with fans.

We asked Michael how he started working in marketing in the music industry: he started very young, with the college radio, and then continued working and promoting bands and organizing events. The real change came when he started getting passioned about Macintosh and HTML, which at that time was completely new. He set himself the goal of learning how to program, and decided to build a website. Since he was a great KISS fan, he decided it would be a KISS website.

Published in 1995, the website had a huge success, so huge that a few years later Gene Simmons called him to build the official website of the band. He moved to San Francisco, and there spent the following few years working full time at building, launching and managing websites for celebrity bands and singers, from KISS to Madonna, to Britney Spears, to U2, and Ozzy Osbourne.

The main goal of these websites was to sell merchandise online, once all the tours were finished and it wasn't possible to sell on site during concerts anymore.

We asked how interaction with fans has changed with social media, and Michael thinks it has been a major change, without a doubt for the better. Before social meda, interacting with fans was difficult and very time consuming, because often, especially in the case of big celebrities, they didn't even want to interact with fans directly for obvious privacy and safety reasons. With Facebook and Twitter, they can talk directly wit fans in real time and have complete protection (well, it depends on what information you decide to publish on these platforms, of course).

As for the selling aspect, in Michael's opinion it should never be the first reason to be online. It should never be the main motivation to open a Facebook fanpage, a Twitter account or a website. Selling will come along once the relationship with the fans is built. You simply need to get online and talk, because at the core, that's what social media are all about: talking, listening and holding conversations.

Companies are extremely afraid of getting online because they don't want to listen, they're afraid of what clients might have to say. In the case of artists, the matter is even more delicate: Michael says that they need to get a very tough skin, and never take criticism personally. Everyone has an opinion, and there's no right or wrong: it's just an opinion. The biggest mistake is to delete unpleasant comments, because in that case you would only get the opposite effect.

We asked Michael how social media marketing works in the adult entertainment industry. It's a challenge: Facebook has very rigid terms and conditions of use, and doesn't even allow the publication of links pointing to an adult website. What can be done is promoting the "glamour" and building a relationship with the users, since selling the product isn't possible.

Talking about celebs on Twitter, a distinction must be done: there are some VIPs who are only now starting to use these tools, and just don't get them. On the other side we have the adult entertainment stars, who are a great example of using Twitter the right way: they talk, answer, talk about anything on their profiles, and fans absolutely love it.

Me ne accorsi definitivamente in un pomeriggio autunnale, 11 anni fa. Lei era bellissima, dolce, simpatica. Ma io non riuscivo ad andare oltre quell'affetto che si può dare ad una cara amica. Non riuscivo a provare quelle forti sensazioni che provavo quando vedevo lui, che non mi faceva dormire neanche di notte, che mi faceva chiudere lo stomaco al solo pensiero. Lui, a cui non potevo rivelare i miei sentimenti.

Sono passati 11 anni. 11 anni trascorsi ad attraversare vicoli bui e giornate di sole. 11 anni di battaglie. 11 anni di sconfitte di cui porto ancora le ferite. 11 anni anche di vittorie, quelle con cui mi sono guadagnato l'affetto e la stima non solo dei miei familiari (e, come ci insegna la quotidianità, non è sempre scontato...) ma anche di tanti sconosciuti, alcuni di loro poi diventati cari amici. Ho dovuto faticare il doppio. Perché non ero solo Fabio: ero Fabio, il gay. Quello che non amava fare a botte nei corridoi della scuola. Quello che non amava dire parolacce o volgarità nei confronti degli altri. Quello che amava starsene in disparte a leggere un libro o a scrutare l'orizzonte. Quello anche socievole e giocoso, con chi lo aiutava ad integrarsi.

Una volta un amico mi disse «Fabio, sei troppo profondo per essere un adolescente. Ecco perché hai pochissimi amici». Non so se sono profondo, di sicuro so che l'omofobia ha violentato il mio carattere, una volta gioioso e travolgente. Anche le gioie, spesso, si spezzano in fretta per lo straripamento di vecchi ricordi non ancora dormienti. Ma l'omosessualità non è questo. O almeno, non solo. L'omosessualità è felicità, è spensieratezza, è poesia. Come qualsiasi altra natura che vive in libertà la propria esistenza. E l'omofobia è l'unica malattia che colpisce chi ne è immune. Perché non ne sono affetti gli omosessuali ma gli stessi eterosessuali. E a volte non sono neanche definibili tali perché dietro certe violenze si nasconde anche la repressione della propria, latente, omosessualità.

E non basterà una legge (comunque sacrosanta) che punisca le violenze omofobe: serve una incisiva quanto travolgente rivoluzione culturale che parta dalla politica per invadere scuola, media e famiglie. Una rivoluzione culturale che metta al centro della propria azione il rispetto verso gli altri. Una rivoluzione culturale che insegni il valore della diversità.

Proprio per questo, vorrei celebrare il rispetto per chi è diverso tutti i giorni, non solo il 17 maggio di ogni anno. Sì, perché non ho alcuna difficoltà a definirmi "diverso". Ecco perché ci metto la faccia da quando avevo 13/14 anni (ora ne ho 25). Sarebbe un grandissimo risultato se queste parole riuscissero a smuovere la coscienza anche solo di una sola persona.

Perché, per dirla tutta: siamo tutti "diversi". E proprio per questo, la difesa e la valorizzazione delle diversità devono assumere un valore importantissimo. Dobbiamo essere tutti uguali solo davanti allo Stato, alla Giustizia. Per il resto, di innaturale ci sono solo l'odio e la violenza.

Let's celebrate love and respect every day

I definitely realized it during an autumn afternoon, 11 years ago. She was beautiful, sweet, nice. But I couldn't go beyond that affection you could feel for a dear friend. I couldn't feel those strong feelings I experienced when I saw him, who didn't let me sleep at night, who made my stomach tighten just by thinking of him. Him, whom I couldn't reveal my feelings to.

Eleven years have passed. Eleven years spent crossing dark alleys and sunny days. Eleven years of battles. Eleven years of defeats I still carry the signs of. Eleven years of victories, the ones with which I gained the affection and appreciation not only of my family (for, as we too often see, it is not something to be taken for granted), but also of many strangers, some of whom have become dear friends in time. I had to work double. Because I wasn't just Fabio: I was Fabio, the gay. The one who didn't want to fight in the school corridors. Tthe one who didn't like to say cuss words or vulgarities towards others. The one who loved to stay aside and read a book or look upon the horizon. The one who could also be friendly and playful, with those who helped him integrate.

Once a friend told me "Fabio, you're too deep to be a teenager. That's why you have so few friends." I don't know whether I'm deep, I surely know that homophobia has done violence to my character, which was once joyful and disruptive. Even joys, often, are broken fast because of old memories still burning. But homosexuality isn't this. At least, not only. Homosexuality is happiness, airiness, it's poetry. As any other nature that lives freely its own existence. And homophobia is the only disease that strikes those who are immune to it. Because homosexuals don't have it, heterosexuals do. And sometimes they cannot even be defined as heterosexuals because behind certain violences they have their own latent homosexuality hiding.

And a law (however just) won't be enough to punish homophobe violences: we need a definitive cultural revolution that starts from politics to invade schools, media and families. A cultural revolution that puts at the center of each person's actions, respect towards others. A cultural revolution that teaches the value of diversity.

For this very reason, I'd like to celebrate respect for diversity every day, not only on the 17th of May of every year. Yes, because I have no difficulties defining myself as different. That's why I've been honest and put my name on it since I was 13 (now I'm 25). It would be a great result if these words could move the conscience of even only one person.

Because, to be honest: we're all different. And because of this, the defense and valorization of diversity must gain an important role. We must be equal in front of the State and Justice. For all the rest, the only unnatural things are hate and violence.

Qualche giorno fa abbiamo intervistato Lia Celi, scrittrice, giornalista e autrice televisiva italiana.

In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto a Lia che peso abbia la rete sulla libertà di satira: a suo avviso la rete concede tutte le libertà tranne quella di poter vivere di satira, rendendola il proprio mestiere. La affranca senz'altro dal fatto di essere considerata una "merce", rendendo liberi gli autori, dato che nessuno vende più il proprio talento, ma dall'altra parte non si può più farlo come mestiere e viverci.
Diventa un hobby, un lusso, e quindi figure come Michele Serra, i redattori o persino i grandi vignettisti sono figure destinate a sparire.

Per quanto riguarda la trasformazione del mestiere di scrivere, Lia ci ha raccontato che spesso le viene chiesto per quale motivo non esiste più un altro "Cuore". La motivazione è semplice: sarebbe necessario spendere di più in avvocati che in redattori, in quanto la sensibilità dei media per il politicamente corretto è diventata così suscettibile da legare e imbavagliare, di fatto, la satira.

L'unico terreno rimasto libero per sperimentare è la rete, che potrebbe essere considerata come una grande palestra dove è possibile veder sbocciare nuovi talenti. Un giovane alle prime armi, infatti, ha diritto di sbagliare: la rete permette di esprimersi con libertà, mentre fare gli stessi errori in un giornale potrebbe avere conseguenze ben più gravi. Ma Lia si definisce liberista e fiduciosa, perché un equilibrio si ristabilisce sempre: la satira del resto esiste dai tempi di Aristofane, trova sempre forme diverse, si reinventa, ma non scompare mai.

Abbiamo chiesto per quale ragione i politici italiani siano tanto recalcitranti alla satira, specialmente se colpisce le loro persone: a suo avviso il problema è culturale. Tempo fa c'erano figure di tale prestigio, che avere una vignetta dedicata era quasi una consacrazione, un simbolo di gloria, un'attestazione di esistenza nelle pagine della storia. La tolleranza nei confronti della satira è proporzionale all'esperienza e alla stoffa del politico, e infatti Giulio Andreotti non si è mai offeso, nonostante sul suo conto sia stato detto di tutto.

Il motivo per cui gli attivisti del M5S non amano la satira a loro rivolta è abbastanza simile, per certi versi: considerano se stessi come espressione di quella stessa base di cui fanno parte anche i satiri, per cui esserne presi in giro li mette tremendamente a disagio. Ma del resto la satira è un'osservazione oggettiva delle debolezze umane, e anche loro ne hanno: dovrebbero mostrarsi superiori ed accettarla. Del resto questa è la funzione storia, classica della satira: "castigat ridendo mores", addita i difetti umani per correggerli.

Il movimento ha ricevuto moltissime critiche anche per l'incoerenza riguardante la trasparenza interna: secondo Lia gli attori sono dei centauri, metà persone razionali e metà istinto, e aggiunge che avrebbe una certa paura ad affidare un grosso movimento politico ad un attore, perché quella cosa che lo rende un bravo attore - cioè la pancia -, è la stessa che fa di lui un politico inaffidabile.

Abbiamo chiesto a Lia dove trovi l'ispirazione per scrivere: a suo avviso l'ispirazione di tutte le cose è il piacere. Si fa qualcosa perché a farla si prova più piacere che a non farla, ed è il motivo che ci fa diventare tutto ciò che vogliamo. Si dice che il latino sia un'ottima ginnastica mentale, ma anche le battute aiutano a pensare meglio. La satira si basa sulla logica aristotelica, sul principio di non contraddizione, sulla filosofia, si usano le basi del pensiero occidentale.

E' un corso accelerato e molto piacevole di ragionamento, da usare in tutte le attività della vita.

Yesterday we had the great pleasure of interviewing Lia Celi, an Italian journalist, writer and tv author.

First of all we asked Lia how it all started, and he revelead that it all began on YouTube last October, when he called Berlusconi on his birthday. Afterwards the Facebook fanpage was opened, and the Twitter channel activated. Pinuccio's language was reproposed on all mediums, but he never really gets an answer to his provocations, which says a lot on how Italian politics manages communication: one direction, no replies.

He believes that the best solution would be for each politician to personally manage his or her online presence, but the truth is that the cultural view of the Italian politician is really far away from the people. Twitter has emphasized that clearly, because they think they can do talk shows on there, not realizing that nobody's actually listening to them anymore.

We asked what satire is for him: he believes it is what it has always been, the pranking of power. The mission of satire is social, putting in light the mistakes of that particular moment, and in what ways the political power is doing it wrong. Moreover, satire should be at 360°, and not have any kind of political color, but unfortunately in Italy - especially in TV - satire always has a color, and you notice it right away when a commedian attacks someone more violently than others.

The shift from paper to the Internet has given the possibility to change the generation of those who actually do satire, because in order to publish on certain newspapers you had to have certain friends and certain recommendations. The web allows everyone to be completely free, and this is the reason why it scares traditional media so much.

Traditional journalism is dead, because it has always been for sale to politics: there's the right wing newspaper, the left wing newspaper, the businessmen newspaper, but the dynamics of online are completely different. The users dedicate just a few minutes of attention to every single stimulus, so the goal is to make people laugh and give them the news at the same time.

The way Italian politicians approach social media is a complete failure: it's not just about quantity, like how many followers you have, or how many mentions and retweets. It's most and foremost a quality issue, when it comes down to analyzing the sentiment of those answers. Alessio estimates that 80% of the answers politicians receive online are actually negative ones, but unfortunately there are only a few analysts who will not blow smoke and will take these factors into consideration as well.

In October November, however, the elections campaign will start, and Lia Celi will participate as well with some dedicated formats. It is difficult to foresse whether the quality of the presence on social networks of single politicians will have any kind of influence on the result of the elections. Unfortunately estimating the difference from the real deal just by what happens online is complicated, and Italy is a "people of clientele", too tied up to the physical contact with the politician to actually be influenced by what happens on social networks.

#Storiedeldisonore: via d'Amelio, quattro processi e poca verità (pt. 1)

L’Italia ancora scossa dall’autostrada sconquassata di Capaci e con una crisi politica in piena deflagrazione deve fare i conti con un’altra esplosione. Avviene il 19 luglio del 1992, tre mesi dopo il ‘botto‘ della strage in cui rimase ucciso Giovanni Falcone.

Questa volta vittima di un attentato terroristico-mafioso è il giudice Paolo Borsellino e i cinque uomini della sua scorta. Insieme a loro c’era anche Antonio Vullo, unico sopravvissuto all’esplosione delle 16.58.

E’ una carneficina. «Si notava una scena di guerra – scrive nel primo rapporto di polizia stilato dal sovrintendente Vincenzo Alberghina che arriva sul posto a bordo della volante “21” – con tante auto distrutte, mentre altre bruciavano ancora, proiettili che sparavano da soli perché a contatto con il fuoco, gente dei palazzi che chiedeva aiuto».

Il dopo strage è costituito da una serie impressionante di abbagli e fallimenti giudiziari (basti pensare che sono stati celebrati per intero ben tre processi ed è in corso il quarto proprio in questi giorni). Sullo sfondo si muove sempre il perverso quadro fatto di mafia, politica, errori investigativo-giudiziari e depistaggi.

Per quasi vent’anni la ricostruzione al vaglio degli inquirenti, e ritenuta attendibile, è stata quella di Vincenzo Scarantino, criminale di basso lignaggio del rione della Guadagna: per 14 anni i pubblici ministeri e i giudici, dal primo grado alla cassazione hanno creduto alla sua versione, al fatto che fosse stato lui a rubare e portare sul posto la 126 poi esplosa in via d'Amelio, e addirittura a riunirsi per decidere l'esecuzione della strage di via d'Amelio.

Tra forzature degli investigatori (a costruire la versione di Scarantino aveva contribuito il superpoliziotto Arnaldo La Barbera, poi deceduto nel 2002) di allora e cecità dell'apparato giudiziario si è costruita una balla lunga 15 anni. Lo hanno chiamato depistaggio. Eppure, per esempio, quello Scarantino non fu mai messo a confronto in aula con quelli ch'egli accusava. Il caso più clamoroso fu Gaetano Murana, incensurato, professione netturbino, contro di lui la sola parola dello Scarantino. Arrestato nel 1994, scarcerato nel 2011 perchè innocente. Ma ci sono tutta una serie di circostanze che dovrebbero come minimo far porre qualche domanda alla pletore di togati che ha permesso tale scempio giudiziario.

Ilda Boccassini nel 1994 mise in guardia investigatori e pubblici ministeri di Palermo «L'inattendibilità delle dichiarazioni rese da Scarantino - scrivevano in una nota nel 1994 Boccassini e l'altro pm che non credeva alla ricostruzione Scarantino, Saieva - suggerisce di riconsiderare il tema dell'attendibilità generale di tale collaboratore, anche perché lo stesso ha, recentemente modificato la propria posizione in ordine ad una circostanza che assume estremo rilievo». Quella circostanza è la stessa di cui oggi si autoaccusa Gaspare Spatuzza e per la quale viene ritenuto credibile, cioè la vicenda del furto della Fiat 126, successivamente imbottita di esplosivo.

«Rinviare il compimento dei necessari atti d'investigazione potrebbe avere come effetto di lasciare allo Scarantino una via aperta verso nuove piroettanti rivisitazioni dei fatti». Rivisitazioni piroettanti che si sono verificate e hanno retto fino in cassazione, fino a quando è arrivata ormai tre anni fa la riapertura delle indagini su di via D'Amelio.

Deposizioni quelle di Scarantino che fecero sospettare la manina di qualche puparo dietro le sue dichiarazioni e la possibile compresenza di una ‘trattativa‘ tra Stato e mafia per frenare le bombe del terrorismo mafioso... [to be continued]

Stories of dishonor: via d'Amelio, four trials and little truth (part 1)

An Italy still shaken by the destroyed highway of Capaci and with a political crisis in full deflagration, must now deal with yet another explosion. It happens on July 19th 1992, three months after the disaster where Giovanni Falcone was killed. This time the victim of a terorristic-mafia attack is the judge Paolo Borsellino and five men of his escort. Together with them was also Antonio Vullo, only survivor of the 16.58 explosion.

It's a massacre. "You could see a war scene - writes in the first police report written by Vincenzo Alberghina, who arrives onboard of his 21 police vehicle - with many destroyed cars, others still burning, bullets that fire themselves because of the contact with fire, people in the buildings crying for help."

The aftermath is constituted by an impressing series of mistakes and judiciary failures (just think about the fact that three trials have been celebrated fully, and the fourth is in course during these very days). In the background we see the same perverted scene made of mafia, politics, investigative-judiciary errors and framings.

For almost 20 years the reconstructions of the investigators, and held as believable, was that of Vincenzo Scarantino, a low profile criminal from the Guadagna rion: for 14 years the judges, from the first degree until the Cassazione, have believed his version, the fact that he was the one to steal and bring on the spot the 126 that exploded in via D'Amelio, and even have a meeting to decide the execution of the via D'Amelio slaughter.

Between the forcing of investigators (in building Scarantino's version there was some contribution from the agent Arnaldo La Barbera, who died in 2002) from back then and the blindness of the judiciary apparatus, they managed to build a lie 15 years long. They called it screening. And yet, for example, that Scarantino was never confronted in court with those whom he accused. The most incredible case was that of Gaetano Murana, without precedents, garbage collector, against him the only word of Scarantino. Arrested in 1994, liberated in 2011 because innocent. But there are a series of circumstances that should at least make a few questions rise from the series of judges who have allowed this judiciary disaster.

Ilda Boccassini in 1994 warned investigators and judges of Palermo: "The unreliability of the declarations given by Scarantino - wrote in a note in 1994 Boccassini and the other PM who didn't believe to Scarantino's reconstructions, Saieva - suggests to riconsider the matter of the general reliability of this collaborator, also because he has recently modified his position regarding a circumstance that assumes extreme relevance." That circumstance is the same of which today Gaspare Spatuzza incriminates himself, and for which he is considered beliavable, which is the matter of the theft of the Fiat 126, later filled with explosives.

"Delaying the completion of the necessary acts of investigation might have the effect of leaving Scarantino an open door towards pivoting revisitations of the facts". Pivoting revisitations that have indeed happened and have worked until Cassazione, until three years ago the inquiries on via D'Amelio have finally been reopened.

Declarations, those of Scarantino, that suggested the hand of some puppetmaster behind his words and the possible presence of a State - mafia "treaty" in order to stop the bombs of mafia terror...

Qualche giorno fa abbiamo intervistato Andrea Sarubbi, giornalista ed ex deputato per il Partito Democratico.

Innanzitutto abbiamo chiesto se vedremo mai i politici italiani fare degli endorsement tra loro sui social media anzichéessere sempre tutti contro tutti: secondo Andrea ci sono già dei momenti di convergenza, occasioni in cui si arriva a un ragionamento condiviso, ma soprattutto ci sono endorsement ai politici a sé vicini. Spesso accadono degli scontri nella brevità dei 140 caratteri, che forzano a prendere posizioni più dure e più secche, dando l'idea di un battibecco quando in realtà non è così.

Naturalmente abbiamo chiesto come è nata "opencamera", l'iniziativa ideata da Andrea durante la precedente legislatura: secondo lui quando uno è giornalista, è giornalista sempre, e quindi ha sentito fortemente il bisogno di condividere ciò che stava accadendo all'interno del Parlamento. All'inizio utilizzava hashtag a seconda dell'argomento trattato, ma poi ha capito che sarebbe stato necessario unificare il tutto in un unico "contenitore", che sarebbe poi diventato "Opencamera". Solo più tardi ha scoperto che "Opencamera" è il nome di un'iniziativa lanciata anni fa dai Radicali, che riguardava la trasparenza dei dati della Camera: dalla stessa volontà di trasparenza, senza saperlo, si è scelto un nome comune.

Sono cambiate molte cose dal suo lancio: si sono avvicinate alla politica persone che non avrebbero mai avuto la possibilità di sapere cosa succede in Parlamento, e che non seguono regolarmente i canali che permettono di seguire le sedute, e di scoprire che la politica può essere condivisibile e anche - perché no - interessante.

Dall'altra parte i parlamentari cominciano a sentire la responsabilità per il proprio operato, e a rendersi pienamente conto che stanno facendo qualcosa di molto importante per il Paese: l'iniziativa dunque è condivisa, non ha un'appartenenza politica, ma responsabilizza tutti, diventando a tutti gli effetti una buona pratica che incuriosisce gli elettori e riesce a raggiungere un maggior numero di persone rispetto a prima.

Abbiamo chiesto ad Andrea che cosa manca in Italia per avere una reale democrazia partecipativa: in primo luogo, a suo avviso, mancano dei partiti politici riconosciuti. Attualmente i partiti fanno quello che vogliono perché la Costituzione non ha previsto vincoli di alcun genere. In secondo luogo manca la possibilità di fare tutto questo anche online, oltre che fisicamente: se infatti si allarga la partecipazione, oltre ai militanti voteranno anche i simpatizzanti, e si avrà la possibilità di avere il polso di quello che è il reale volere della platea.

Secondo Andrea la politica italiana usa i social ancora come un megafono: tutti in campagna elettorale aprono un account Twitter, che poi chiudono con la stessa facilità nel momento in cui le elezioni si concludono. Li usano come ufficio stampa, e non hanno capito che il principio fondamentale dei social è la bidirezionalità tra chi parla e chi risponde, e li usano come mezzi di propaganda quando così non dovrebbe essere. Unica eccezione è quella di Beppe Grillo, che invece adotta un atteggiamento simile, ma ha un seguito davvero molto importante, nonostante in realtà la linea sia dettata dall'alto e i commenti dei lettori non abbiano alcuna influenza nel variarla.

A few days ago we interviewed Andrea Sarubbi, journalist and ex MP for the Democratic Party.

First of all we asked whether we will ever see Italian politicians make endorsements among each other instead of always being against each other: according to Andrea there are already such moments of convergence, occasions in which they do get to a shared reasoning, but most of all there are endorsements to politicians whose views their share. There are obviously often some diversions in 140 characters, mostly because they do force you to take a strong position, giving the idea of a fight when most times it's not the case.

Of course we asked how "opencamera" was born, the initiative Andrea launched during the previous Parliament: according to him, when someone is a journalist, then he is always a journalist, so he strongly felt the need to share what was going on inside the Parliament. At the beginning he used hashtags related to the topic he was writing about, but the he understood that it was necessary to unify it all under the same hashtag, which was then opencamera. Only later did he discover that Opencamera was the name of an initiative the Radicals had launched years prior, which regarded the transparency of the data of the Chamber. So from the same desire for transparency, he unknowingly chose the same name.

Many things have changed since the launch: people who would never have the possibility to know what happened inside the Parliament became interested in politics, and discovered that it's something they can relate to and find quite interesting.

On the other side, the MP start to feel the responsibility for their own doings, and realizing that what they are doing is very important for the entire country: the initiative is thus shared across political views, and makes everyone responsible, becoming a good practice that makes voters curious and manages to reach a much higher number of people.

We asked Andrea what is missing in Italy in order to have a true participative democracy: first of all, in his opinion, there are no recognized political parties. Currently parties can do whatever they want, because the Constitution does not have any kind of limitations. Secondly there should be the possibility to do it all online, not only in person: in fact, when you widen the participation, sympathizers will vote along with activists, and so you have the possibility to know what the public wants more specifically.

Andrea believes that Italian politics uses social media as a megaphone: everyone opens a Twitter account during an elections campaign, and the close it as easily as they opened it when the elections are done. They use it as a press office, and they don't understand that the fundamental principle of social media is the bidirectionality between those speaking and those who answer, and they use them as means of propaganda when it shouldn't be like that. The only exception to the rule is Beppe Grillo, who adopts a similar behavior, but has a very wide following, in spite of the fact that the line is dictated from above and the comments of readers don't have any influence in changing it.

Federica Salsi, ex attivista del Movimento 5 Stelle, ci ha concesso un'intervista qualche giorno dopo le elezioni politiche che hanno visto l'enorme successo del Movimento.

In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto a Federica la sua opinione riguardo alla preparazione degli attivisti: a suo avviso non c'è una mancanza di competenze tecniche all'interno del Movimento, ma di conoscenze relative al funzionamento della macchina amministrativa. E' chiaro tuttavia che, quando si comincia un percorso di questo tipo, non è pensabile gravare sulle spalle dei cittadini per tutto il tempo per cui è necessaria una preparazione. L'intervista a Bartolomeo Pepe, che ha destato moltissimo scalpore negli ultimi giorni, l'ha stupita molto: a suo avviso infatti ci sono persone preparate all'interno del Movimento. Poche, ma ci sono.

Secondo Federica le perplessità che aveva esternato lo scorso anno dopo la sua espulsione dal Movimento 5 Stelle hanno trovato un riscontro in ciò che vediamo accadere ora, e la sua non è stata che un'anticipazione delle sensazioni che ora trovano riscontro con i fatti.

Ciò su cui a suo avviso sarebbe necessario interrogarsi è il fatto che Beppe Grillo si prenda la libertà di dire - ad esempio - che vedrebbe bene un Di Pietro come Presidente della Repubblica, senza però confrontarsi con la base. Un altro fatto interessante è che anche dopo le elezioni Grillo abbia continuato ad esprimersi senza un confronto con quelli che sono gli eletti.

Abbiamo chiesto a Federica se il risultato di queste elezioni l'abbia stupita: la risposta è assolutamente no. Si sapeva che il risultato sarebbe stato il 28-30%, e quel che è accaduto altro non è che una conferma di quello che si vociferava prima del voto. Non c'è da stupirsi prima di tutto per il grande malcontento che serpeggiava nel Paese: ci sono tante persone che hanno votato M5S non tanto perché credono che il Movimento possa risollevare le sorti del Paese, ma semplicemente per non votare le solite facce.

Questo fatto è dimostrato anche dal fatto che l'astensionismo è aumentato: pur avendo un ottimo risultato, il Movimento non è riuscito ad aggregare gli astensionisti, che sarebbero il reale pubblico del M5S, ma hanno spostato voti da destra e sinistra, poi convogliati nel Movimento.

Ci sono moltissime domande in questo momento e una grande attenzione per gli attivisti, ad esempio con il paragone Grillo - Hitler emerso negli ultimi giorni. Secondo Federica c'è una grande apertura dei Movimento a chiunque voglia informarsi e conoscere più da vicino le attività sul territorio, ma c'è una grande differenza tra le dinamiche locali e le dinamiche nazionali. Se è vero che a livello locale l'organizzazione è sempre avvenuta in maniera autonoma, altrettanto non può essere detto per il contesto nazionale, per cui Grillo e Casaleggio hanno deciso tutto in autonomia.

A partire dalle regole, dalle modalità per fare le candidature, il contenuto del programma, tutto fatto senza un confronto con gli attivisti, per poi veicolare questi loro contenutiusando modalità comunicative che richiamano le modalità dell'epoca fascista. La differenza la fanno le persone che si sono avvicinate al Movimento, specialmente negli anni dal 2007 al 2009, quando Grillo usava ancora un modo di comunicare graffiante e ironica, ma più morbido rispetto ad oggi.

Ora le modalità sono molto più violente, si fa leva sulla pancia - come avveniva durante il fascismo e il nazismo - e manca una proposta di soluzione. Quindi dal punto di vista della comunicazione delle analogie ci sono, ma bisognerà vedere come si comporterà il governo prima di poter esprimere un giudizio definitivo.

Abbiamo chiesto se questo cambiamento nella modalità di comunicare, e il fatto che conseguentemente ne siano stati attirati esponenti di Forza Nuova e Casa Pound, possa alterare il nucleo originario del Movimento: secondo Federica questo rischio esiste ed è concreto. A suo avviso c'è stato uno spostamento verso l'ideologia di destra durante l'ultimo anno. Fino al 2011 Grillo ha aggregato un elettorato più vicino alla sinistra, mentre dal 2012 in avanti, in concomitanza del crollo della destra e lo scandalo della Lega, ha cominciato ad attirare anche un elettorato di destra.

Questo trova conferma specialmente a livello locale, dove ci possono essere grosse discordanze riguardo a certi temi: a Bologna si è sempre mantenuto un atteggiamento di confronto e comprensioni riguardo ai temi dell'immigrazione, mentre in altri contesti, specialmente al nord, si propende per un atteggiamento più leghista.

Il Movimento è nato intorno a stelle molto chiare: ambiente, trasparenza, riduzione dei costi. Non c'erano ideologie di fondo, ma problemi molto concreti, e condivisibili da persone sia di estrema destra che di estrema sinistra, il che porta ad avere un contenitore in cui si ritrovano ideologie estremamente diverse.

Fededrica Salsi, former Movimento 5 Stelle activist, has given us an interview a few days after the elections that saw a great success of the Movement itself.

First of all we asked Federica for her opinion regarding the preparation of the activists: in her opinion there is no lack of technical competences inside the Movement, but of knowledge relative to the functioning of the administration. It is clear that, when you start such a path, it's not thinkable to weigh on the contributors shoulders for the entire time you need to prepare. The interview with Bartolomeo Pepe, which has arisen a lot of discussion these days, has amazed her: she believes that there are quite a few well prepared people inside the Movement. Not many, but there are a few.

In Federica's opinion the perplexities she had aknowledged last year after her being expelled from the Movement have found a confirmation in what we see happening now, and hers is just an anticipation of the sensations that now find confirmation in facts.
First of all, in her opionion it is necessary to intervene on how people enter the world of work, not on how people exit it. Secondly the types of available contracts are way too many and misused, also and mostly because they aren't controlled in any way.

What we should ask ourselves is why Beppe Grillo takes the liberty of saying - for example - that he would see Di Pietro well as President, without even consulting with the base. Another interesting fact is that Grillo has continued to do the same thing after the elections as well, when he should at least have consulted with those who were elected.

We asked Federica whether the results of these elections have amazed her: the answer was absolutely not. They knew the results would have been around 28-30%, and what happened is nothing else than a confirmation of what was being said before the vote. No wonder, if we consider the discontent that existed in the Country: there are many people who voted M5S not because they believe that the Movement will save the country, but just because they didn't want to vote the same old faces.

This is proven by the fact that astensionism has increased: even with a great result, the Movement didn't manage to move those who abstained, who are the real public of the M5S, but they have moved votes from left and right, then attracted towards the Movement.

There are many questions in this moment and a great attention towards the activists, for example with the Grillo - Hitler, emerged during the last few days. In Federica's opinion there's a great opening of the Movement to anyone who wants to get informed and get to know the activities on the territory, but there's a great difference between local and national dynamics. If it's true that at a local leve the organization has always happened in an autonomous way, the same cannot be said about the national context, where Grillo and Casaleggio have decided everything autonomously by themselves.

Starting with the rules, from the modalities for candidacies, the content of the program, everything done without a confrontation with the activists, in order to communicate these content with modalities that recall those of the fascist era. The difference is made by the people who are part of the Movement, especially those who joined in 2007, 2008 and 2009, when Grillo used a way that was ironic and fierce, but still softer than he is today.

Now it is much more violent, and they stimulate the gut - as was done during the fascism and nazi era - and there's a lack of a solution. So from a communication point of view, the analogies are there, but we will have to see how the government behaves before we can express a definitive opinion.

We asked whether this change in the modalities of communication, and the fact that consequently many exponents of Forza Nuova and Casa Pound were attracted to the Movement, might alter the originary nucleus of the Movement itself: in Federica's opinion this risk exists and is real. She believes there has been a shift towards a right wing ideology during the last 12 months. Until 2011 Grillo has aggregated a public that was closer to the left wing, while from 2012 onwards, starting with the collase of the right and the Lega scandal, he also started saying things that attracted that kind of vote.

This is confirmed especially at a local level, where there can be great discrepancies regarding certain topics: in Bologna there has always been a level of civilized confrontation and understanding regarding immigration, while in other contexts, especially in the north, there's a tendency towards the Northern League kind of approach.

The Movement was born around a few very clear topics: environment, transparency, cost reduction. There were no ideologies, but very concrete problems, which could be shared by people both at the extreme right and the extreme left, which led to the creation of a container in which extremely different ideologies need to cohexist.

Il candidato del centro sinistra alla presidenza della regione Lombardia, Umberto Ambrosoli, ci ha concesso un'intervista durante la quale abbiamo affrontato alcune tra le tematiche più discusse nelle ultime settimane: lavoro, sanità, trasporti, mafia, e le proposte per risolvere le situazioni di crisi che si sono venute a creare.

In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto per quale motivo CL abbia il sostanziale monopolio della sanità lombarda: il dott. Bresciani ha rappresentato in un'intervista di diversi anni fa la convinzione che sia cosa giusta che i direttori generali siano nominati tenendo conto del responso delle urne, mettendo dunque in secondo piano il merito. Per questo motivo la sanità è stata spartita in tante delle sue cariche di assoluto rilievo a soggetti dal pensiero conforme a quello del presidente della regione Lombardia.

Un'altra domanda che abbiamo fatto riguarda la possibilità di coinvolgere persone fuori da qualsiasi appartenenza o gruppo, avvalendosi dunque di collaboratori non presenti in alcuna lista. Ambrosoli ha specificato che la sua lista civica è composta solo da persone che non hanno avuto incarichi di rappresentanza politica sotto alcun partito: non si tratta tuttavia di ostilità verso chi ha già svolto incarichi di questo tipo, ma di una volontà di differenziazione.

Nel frattempo è stata lanciata sul web anche una piattaforma di partecipazione programmatica alla quale si sono iscritte in pochi giorni più di 500 persone che hanno partecipato alla discussione sui programmi. E' anche vero che nel momento in cui si chiede il parere dei cittadini, bisogna essere pronti ad accogliere le loro richieste, e questo richiede una partecipazione attenta, assidua, e molto impegno. In alcune circostanze le proposte non sono sostenibili dal punto di vista economico e finanziario, ma si sta lavorando per tradurre tali idee in qualche cosa che sia invece sostenibile, sia a livello economico che ambientale.

Abbiamo parlato anche della questione relativa alla disoccupazione giovanile: secondo Ambrosoli bisogna creare sviluppo in grado di rispondere alla domanda di lavoro che produciamo ogni anno. Non si tratta di qualche cosa di astratto, ma della vita delle persone, della possibilità di creare famiglie, non diventare un paese di anziani, evolversi e crescere. Naturalmente lo sviluppo è difficile da creare quando le risorse sono tanto scarse, ma la proposta è di usare le risorse verso quei settori capaci di creare un vero e proprio volano in termini di posti di lavoro duraturi, come le nuove tecnologie, infrastrutture moderne, creatività e design, nonché la piccola industria manufatturiera.

Il problema sta nello scollamento tra il mondo dell'istruzione e della formazione e il mondo dell'impresa: tantissimi cittadini lombardi si sono impegnati, hanno studiato all'estero, hanno imparato le lingue, per poi venire in Italia a lavorare e scoprire che non vi è nulla di coerente con le aspettative che sono stati invitati a coltivare per anni e con la loro formazione.

Un'altra tematica affrontata nell'intervista è stata quella degli immigrati comunitari ed extracomunitari: l'economia della regione Lombardia non starebbe in piedi se non fosse grazie al contributo di decine di migliaia di lavoratori immigrati. Pensare di fare delle politiche che non tengano conto che sono risorse fondamentali per l'economia è, secondo Ambrosoli, semplicemente ipocrita.

Infine abbiamo affrontato parlato di nuovo di sanità e dello scandalo del San Raffaele, di trasporti e della preoccupante ingerenza mafiosa nell'amministrazione pubblica e nell'impresa privata.

First of all we asked for what reason CL has the monopoly of Lombardy's sanitary system. Doctor Bresciani has represented in an interview the conviction that it is right for general directors to be nominated taking into account the response of the elections, which sees their merit as less important than their political views. For this reason sanity has been divided in many of its important roles to people who had views agreeing with those of the Lombardy region president.

Another question we asked is about the possibility to involve people outside groups or parties, using collaborators who are not present in any list. Ambrosoli has specified that his civic list is only made up of people who have never had political roles in any party: it's not about being hostile towards those who have already had roles, but it's a willingness to differentiate.

In the meanwhile a programmatic participation platform has been launched on the web: more than 500 people have subscribed and participated to the discussion of programs. It is true that when you ask the citizens for their opinion, you must be ready to grant their requests, and this requires a lot of work. In some circumstances the proposals aren't doable from an economical and financiary point of view, but they are working to translate these ideas in something that is sustainable both from an economical and environmental point of view.

We also talked about young people unemployment: in Ambrosoli's opinion we must create development capable of absorbing the work demand we produce every year. It's not something abstract, but the life of people, the possibility to create families, not become a country of old people, evolve and grow. Of course, development is difficult to create when resources are scarce, but the proposal is to use the resources towards those fields that are capable of creating a proper boost in terms of long term jobs, such as new technologies, modern infrastructures, creativity and design, and small manufactury industry.

The problem is in the distance between the world of instruction and formation and the world of enterprise: many Lombardy citizens have worked hard, studied abroad, studied foreign languages, in order to come to Italy to work and discover that actually there is nothing coherent with the expectations we told them to cultivate for years, and their own formation.

Another topic we tackled during the interview is the one of immigrants, both communitary and extracommunitary: the economy of Lombardy wouldn't function if not thanks to tens of thousands of immigrate workers. To think that it is possible to do politics that don't take them into account as fundamental resources for economy is simply hypocritical.

We talked about the scandal of San Raffaele, transportation and the worrying mafia presence in the public administration and private enterprise.

Debora Serracchiani, deputata al Parlamento Europeo per il Partito Democratico, ha risposto alle nostre domande a proposito della situazione politica in Italia, le prospettive per i giovani, e soprattutto le idee e le proposte del PD per migliorare il quadro economico e sociale.

Qualche giorno fa abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare Debora Serracchiani, avvocatessa e politica italiana, deputata al Parlamento europeo per il Partito Democratico e membro del gruppo Alleanza progressista dei socialisti e dei democratici al Parlamento europeo.

Abbiamo chiesto a Debora la sua opinione riguardo all'attuale situazione del Governo italiano. A suo avviso il declino del Presidente del Consiglio è evidente a tutti, e a causa della sua incapacità di
occuparsi delle sue questioni personali al posto di quelle del Paese, anche il Paese viene trascinato insieme a lui in questo declino.
C'è sicuramente bisogno di un cambiamento, di figure nuove, e la speranza è che ciò accada al più presto. [video]

Un'altra domanda che abbiamo fatto a Debora è stata riguardo alle sue proposte concrete per il futuro lavorativo dei giovani.
Innanzitutto a suo avviso bisogna intervenire sulle modalità di entrata nel mondo del lavoro, non sulle modalità di uscita. In secondo luogo le tipologie contrattuali sono troppe e mal utilizzate, anche e soprattutto perché non sottoposte ad alcuna forma di controllo.
Le sue proposte dunque sarebbero: più controllo sulle tipologie contrattuali, stabilire un contratto iniziale a tempo indeterminato da far crescere in base all'anzianità e al contributo apportato all'azienda, pagare di più i precari rispetto agli ordinari, migliorare gli ammortizzatori sociali e incentivare le assunzioni dei giovani attraverso facilitazioni per quel che riguarda i contributi previdenziali. Abbiamo chiesto a Debora come sarebbe stata la sua manovra finanziaria: in primo luogo non avrebbe aspettato Novembre 2011 per far sapere al Paese che la situazione era tale da rendere necessari dei provvimenti impopolari.
I punti principali su cui sarebbe intervenuta sarebbero stati far contribuire di più i cittadini che possono permettersi di dare di più, fare delle operazioni molto intensive sull'evasione fiscale, trasferire le tasse sui patrimoni, riducendo quelle a chi lavora e chi produce, dare la possibilità alle piccole e piccolissime imprese di accedere al credito in forma agevolata, tagliare i costi della politica e infine provvedere a un taglio del cuneo fiscale. Debora ha anche espresso la sua opinione in merito all'utilizzo di strumenti social nella comunicazione politica: a suo avviso bisogna sicuramente investire nella rete, ma allo stesso tempo mantenere forte il contatto con le persone e con il territorio. [video]

Inoltre le abbiamo chiesto che cosa pensa dei movimenti "occupy" e della tendenza da parte dei cittadini di riappropriarsi della politica. A suo avviso si tratta di movimenti importanti, che trattano temi che riguardano non solo l'Europa, ma il mondo intero, come la finanza, le scelte politiche per la tutela delle banche e delle assicurazioni.
Debora ha tuttavia specificato di non condividere tutte le posizioni: per quel che riguarda ad esempio il debito, il senso di responsabilità e il desiderio di rendere migliore il paese la portano a cercare di occuparsi anche di un debito che ha solo ereditato e che non ha contribuito a creare. Per quanto riguarda Matteo Renzi, Debora pensa che si tratti di una risorsa per il PD, è un amministratore di una città importante che ha messo l'accento sul tema del rinnovamento della classe politica.
Ne condivide alcune idee e si confronta su altre, ma del resto è importante confrontarsi all'interno dello stesso partito appunto sulle idee e mai sui cognomi o sulle persone. [video]

Abbiamo chiesto a Debora cosa pensa di Beppe Grillo: sebbene non ne condivida alcune posizione più estreme, lei stessa ha sottolineato che Grillo si è occupato di molte questioni importanti, in primo luogo il cortocircuito tra società, banche e finanza.
Il PD dovrebbe imparare ad interloquire con l'elettorato di Grillo, anche perché ci sono molti punti sui quali i due movimenti concordano: non lo reputa quindi responsabile per le sconfitte del centro-sinistra, che dovrebbe invece interrogarsi sul perché non riesce a dialogare con gli elettori. A few days ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Debora Serracchiani, Italian lawyer and politician, Member of the European Parliament on behalf of the Democratic Party and member of the group Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

We asked Debora her opinion about the current situation of the Italian Government. She thinks that the Prime Minister's downhill trend is there for all to see, and because of his inability to take care of his personal matters instead of the country's problems, Italy as well is being dragged down with him.
There is certainly the need for change, the need for new figures, and hopefully change will happen as soon as possible. [video]

Another question we asked Debora was about her practical proposals for young people's occupational future.
First of all, in her opionion it is necessary to intervene on how people enter the world of work, not on how people exit it. Secondly the types of available contracts are way too many and misused, also and mostly because they aren't controlled in any way.
Her proposals would be: more control on the types of contracts, creating an initial permanent contract that can be modified based on length of service and the contribution to the company, paying fixed term employees more than those with a permanent contract, making social safety nets better and stimulating companies into hiring young people by lowering the amount of social security contributions they have to pay. We asked Debora how her financial manneuver would have been: first of all, she wouldn't have waited November 2011 to let the country know that the situation was severe enough to make some unpopular decisions necessary.
The main points on which she would have intervened would have been making citizens that can afford paying more taxes actually contribute more, making some intensive operations on tax evasion, transfering taxes on assets and reducing those of who works and produces, giving the possibility to small and very small companies to access credit with facilitations, cutting off the costs of politics and finally reducing taxes. Debora has also expressed her opinion about the use of social tools in political communication: she thinks that it is necessary to invest in the web, but at the same time maintain a strong contact with people and territory. [video]

We have also asked what she thinks about the "occupy" movements and the tendency of citizens to get hold of politics again. In her opinion these are important movements, that treat topics that not only regard Europe, but the whole world, such as finance, political choices for the protection of banks and insurances.
Debora has also specified she doesn't agree with all positions: as for the debt issue, her sense of responsibility and the desire to make it a better country bring her to also take care of a debt that she has only inherited, and she hasn't contributed to create. [video]

As for Matteo Renzi, Debora thinks he is a resource for PD, he is the administrator of an important city who has pointed out the topic of the rechange of the political class.
She shares some of his ideas and discusses others, but in the end it is important to discuss inside the same party, and discuss ideas: not surnames or people. [video]

We asked Debora what her opinion about Beppe Grillo is: even though she doesn't share some extreme positions of his, she has stressed that Grillo has been dealing with many important matters, first of all the short circuit between society, banks and finance.
The Democratic Party should ask itself why it can't interact with those who vote Grillo, especially because there are many points on which the two movements agree: she doesn't hold him responsible for the defeats her party has suffered, she thinks the Democratic Party should start talking to those who vote him. Giuseppe Civati, politico e blogger italiano, ci ha illustrato le strategie e le idee per cominciare a sanare la situazione economica italiana, dal futuro lavorativo dei giovani alla crisi finanziaria.

Qualche giorno fa abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare Giuseppe Civati, politico e blogger italiano.

Innanzitutto Giuseppe ci ha raccontato quale è stato il percorso che lo ha portato ad occuparsi di politica: prima la scuola, poi i Giovani Progressisti, quindi i comitati per Prodi e la politica istituzionale, per diventare infine Consigliere Regionale della Regione Lombardia. [video]

Abbiamo chiesto come sarebbe stata la sua manovra finanziaria, se fosse stato al governo: Giuseppe sostiene che la scelta giusta sia di far pagare la crisi a chi se lo può permettere, non a chi è più in difficoltà.
Patrimoniale sì, dunque, soprattutto l'idea di passare da una tassazione pesante sul lavoro e sull'impresa a una tassazione più modesta, intervenendo invece su chi ha grandi disponibilità immobiliari che bloccano il paese, e che comunque sono la forma di investimento più remunerativa e meno tassata. Il berlusconismo, secondo Giuseppe, non inizia e non finisce con Berlusconi, anche se sta attraversando un periodo di grande crisi, sia dal punto di vista politico che dal punto di vista morale.
La maggioranza parlamentare c'è, anche se il Parlamento è di fatto bloccato da meccanismi di ricatto molto volgari. [video]

Abbiamo chiesto a Giuseppe se a suo avviso il DDL Intercettazioni passerà: il progetto del Presidente del Consiglio, a quanto pare, è di chiudere tutti i boccaporti, evitare che ci sia un dibattito pubblico informato e limitare la possibilità di esprimere la critica sulla base di dati reali.
E' già stata messa una pesante ipoteca sul servizio pubblico televisivo, con l'esodo dei giornalisti scomodi dai canali di Rai e Mediaset. [video]

Per una politica che ormai ha perso di vista i suoi obiettivi, è necessario cercare dei nuovi interpreti, liberi e a "scadenza naturale", con un limite al numero di mandati per cui è possibile candidarsi.
Abbiamo parlato di un modello possibilmente migliore di legge elettorale, che Giuseppe ha individuato nel doppio turno "alla francese", come già avviene nell'elezione dei sindaci, un modello che potrebbe garantire una maggiore governabilità e una scelta informata e articolata.
Persino con la Legge Calderoli, il cosiddetto Porcellum, sarebbe possibile sanare la situazione: basterebbe semplicemente scegliere i parlamentari con le primarie, ma questa proposta non è mai stata attuata. [video]

Per concludere Giuseppe ha parlato dei punti della sua agenda digitale per l'Italia, della sua idea di Europa, delle pensioni e del precariato, esprimendo la sua opinione riguardo a quelli che potrebbero essere i provvedimenti adatti per risolvere i problemi relativi a questi aspetti.

We asked what his financial manneuver would have been like, had he been in the government: Giuseppe says that the right thing to do would be make those who can afford it pay the crisis, not the ones that have the biggest financial difficulties.
Yes to the capital levy, especially to the idea of lowering the taxation of work and enterprises, and increasing the taxes for those who have great real estate properties that block the country, and that are the most profitable and less taxes form of investment. [video]

Berlusconism, in Giuseppe's opinion, doesn't start and doesn't finish with Berlusconi, even though it is now facing a period of great crisis, both from a political and a moral point of view.
The Parliament majority is there, even though the Parliament itself is blocked by very vulgar blackmail mechanisms. [video]

We asked Giuseppe if in his opinion the DDL Wiretappings will pass: the Prime Minister's project seems to be to close every hatchway, avoid an informed public debate and limit the possibility of expressing critics on the base of real data.
The public television service is already paying a great price, with the most troublesome journalists leaving Rai and Mediaset. [video]

For politics that has lost its goals, it is necessary to find new interpreters, free and with a functional deadline, for example a limit to the number of mandates they can candidate for.
We talked about a possibly better model of electoral law, that Giuseppe has identified in the "majority" system, as for mayor election, a model that might guarantee a better guvernability and a more informed and elaborated choice.
Even with the Calderoli Law, known as Porcellum, it would be possible to find a viable solution: it would only be necessary to choose members of Parliament with the primary elections, but this proposal has never been applied. [video]

In conclusion Giuseppe has talked about the points of his digital agenda for Italy, of his idea of Europe, of retirement pensions and temporary employment, expressing his opinion regarding the solutions that might solve the problems relative to these topics.

Qualche giorno fa abbiamo intervistato David Meerman Scott, marketer americano e autore del libro "The New Rules of Marketing and PR".

In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto a David qualche dettaglio a proposito del masterclass sul marketing tenutosi ieri a Milano: ci ha rivelato che il tutto si basa su due "big ideas". La prima sono le nuove regole del marketing PR, qualsiasi persona può creare contenuti sul web, e quei contenuti possono servire a scopi di marketing. Che siano video o testo, potranno essere veicolati sui social media per generare attenzione intorno al brand. La seconda grande idea è ingaggiare gli utenti in realtime, seguendo i tempi dei clienti e non i propri.

Sebbene si parli di aziende presenti sui social media da molto tempo, questi nuovi canali vengono spesso trattati solamente come presidi, e non come reali opportunità di interazione con gli utenti. Secondo David la maggior parte delle organizzazioni usano i social nel modo sbagliato, spuntando una casella per poter dire di "esserci". Ma sicuramente non è questo il modo corretto per utilizzarli.

L'idea dietro l'utilizzo dei social media è basata su due pilastri fortissimi: il fatto che le aziende condividano i propri contenuti - infografiche, video, post - che poi le persone condivideranno sui propri canali, e attorno ai quali si possa creare conversazione e condivisione. In secondo luogo una comunicazione biunivoca tra azienda e consumatori, in modo tale da poter interagire con quegli utenti che stanno parlando del brand in un determinato momento. Molte compagnie scambiano ancora questi canali per i canali tradizionali unidirezionali, utilizzandoli di conseguenza. L'unico motivo per cui i manager sono ancora scettici riguardo ai social media è che non li stanno utilizzando nel modo corretto.

Ci sono inoltre stati diversi casi di cattivo CRM sui social media: secondo David i contenuti hanno un buon potenziale per diventare virale a prescindere dal fatto che siano negativi o positivi. Può andare benissimo, come può diventare una catastrofe: l'unico modo per gestire una situazione di crisi è essere onesti, parlare con le persone, e parlare con voce umana. Si reagisce come esseri umani, si chiede scusa, si offrono spiegazioni, e non bisogna mai mettersi sulla difensiva. Così c'è la possibilità di trasformare un evento negativo in un'opportunità per l'azienda.

Abbiamo naturalmente chiesto a David se i dettami del Cluetrain Manifesto siano stati finalmente raggiunti: secondo lui siamo nel mezzo di una rivoluzione che durerà circa 30 anni, che probabilmente sarà molto simile a quella seguita all'invenzione della stampa, un cambiamento che ha portato l'umanità fuori dal Medioevo e nel pieno del Rinascimento. Ora circa 6 miliardi di persone hanno accesso a un telefono mobile: le potenzialità sono infinite.

Questa è una rivoluzione, e siamo ancora soltanto agli inizi: faremo ulteriori progressi nei prossimi 20 anni, e le idee del Cluetrain Manifesto e le big idea di cui si parlava poco fa, non saranno più una realtà per pochi, ma per tutti. Ed è così che si comunicherà nel futuro.

Un'altra domanda che abbiamo fatto a David è quale sarebbe il modo migliore per gestire la comunicazione sui social: la sua risposta è stata molto chiara. L'ideale sarebbe che la gestione fosse interna, e che a occuparsene fossero dei giornalisti. Il motivo è semplice: i giornalisti sanno come creare contenuti, come raccontare una storia, capiscono le comunicazioni in realtime. Inoltre tutti i componenti dell'azienda dovrebbero poter utilizzare i social media al lavoro, come accade per esempio in IBM. In sostanza, a occuparsi della comunicazione aziendale dovrebbero essere dei giornalisti, non degli advertiser.

Infine abbiamo parlato della crisi della creatività e dei suoi consigli per le aziende che vogliono intraprendere una nuova strada per quel che concerne la comunicazione e il marketing.

The first are the new rules of marketing PR: anyone can produce content on the web, and that content can be used for marketing purposes. Whether it's video or text, it can be shared on social media and generate attention around the brand. The second big idea is engaging users in realtime, and relating to customers on their schedule, not yours.

Although we've been talking about companies on social media for a very long time, these new channels are often considered only as platforms you need to be present on, and not a true opportunity to interact with clients. According to David the majority of organizations use social media in the wrong way, by "checking the box" when they open a Twitter or Facebook account. But this isn't the right way to do things.

The idea behind the use of social media is based on two very strong pillars: the fact that companies share their content - infographics, video, posts - that people will then share and talk about. Secondly a bidirectional communication between company and consumers, in order to interact with those customers who are talking about the brand at any given time. Many companies use them as traditional one direction channels: therefore, the only reason people are still skeptical about social media is that they're using it in the wrong way.

There have also been several cases of really bad CRM on social media: David believes content has a good potential to become viral regardless of whether it's positive or negative. It can go either very well or very bad: the only way to deal with a crisis is to be honest, talk with people, and talk with a human voice. If you react as a human being, you apologize, offer explanation, and never get defensive, then you have the chance to transform something negative into an opportunity for yourself and the company.

We also asked David whether the points of the Cluetrain Manifesto have been reached: he believes we're in the middle of a revolution that will last 30 years, and that will probably be very similar to the one following the invention of the press print, which has brought humanity out of the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Now almost 6 billion people have access to mobile phones: the potential is without limits.

This is a revolution, and we're still at the beginning: we'll make further progress during the next 20 years, and the ideas of the Cluetrain Manifesto and the big ideas we were talking about earlier, won't be a reality for a selected few, but for everyone. And that's how we will communicate in the future.

Another question we asked David was about the best way to manage communication on social media: his answer was very clear. The ideal scenario would be to have an internal management done by journalists. The reason is simple: journalists know how to create content, how to tell a story, and they understand realtime communication. Besides, everyone in the company should be empowered to use social media at work, as IBM is already doing. In substance, the people managing the company communication should be journalists, not advertisers.

Finally we talked about the crisis of creativity and his advice for those companies that want to start on the road of a new communication and marketing strategy.

Parlando con conoscenti vari in queste settimane sono rimasto con una sensazione di dubbio. La gente ha rinunciato a sperare in una sinistra possibile?

Dopo l'entusiasmo del momento primarie nelle immediate ore successive all'ultima tornata elettorale è seguito il disastro, quello a cui tutti abbiamo assistito. La strategia di Bersani, avanti tutta con il paraocchi senza badare minimamente a quel che la base gridava. L'inefficacia di un dialogo con il movimento 5 stelle (forse impossibile, ma comunque studiato strategicamente male). L'impasse per il Quirinale, con la clamorosa sfiducia a Romano Prodi, padre del PD. Il picche di SEL. Le conseguenti e ovvie, ma tardive, dimissioni di Bersani e della sua segreteria. La riapertura di vecchie e nuove faide interne alle rovine del partito.

Tutto questo nel giro di due mesi. I due mesi più duri per quella che poteva e doveva essere la nuova sinistra, riformatrice, aperta e proiettata in avanti di cui tanto nei mesi passati ci avevano parlato.

Nulla di fatto. O meglio, tutto da rifare. Con l'avvicinarsi di assemblea e apertura dei lavori di un congresso (che ancora non si capisce bene come sarà strutturato), con l'incertezza di una spada che pende minacciosa sullo strumento delle primarie, con l'intricata matassa delle correnti, vecchie e nuove che si dimenano nel grembo del corpo ferito del PD non è impossibile immaginare, anzi, certificare, una mancanza di fiducia, una rassegnazione da parte della base, dei militanti, dei circoli (occupati in molte parti del paese) che si sono sentiti abbandonati.

Come scrivevo in apertura, parlando con alcuni conoscenti del futuro del PD, e della sinistra in generale, ho riscontrato nelle loro parole una perdita di priorità nelle questioni della rifondazione (perché di questo si tratterà) del partito. Al contrario invece, l'apertura al tentativo Letta, pur se in alleanza con l'acerrimo nemico, ha ricevuto consensi, seppur rassegnati, ma di fatto come ha detto uno dei miei interlocutori, ad un certo momento bisogna pur fare di necessità virtù.

Chi vi scrive è tra quelli (e penso siano molti) che credono che arrivati a questo punto quello del governo appena nato fosse l'unico cammino percorribile per cercare di preparare, si spera per davvero, la strada a quella che sarà la terza Repubblica, una terza Repubblica che ad oggi stenta a decollare proprio per la mancanza di nuove fondamenta (riforme in primis) su cui sorgere. Ma non di meno invoca la rinascita di una sinistra e di un Partito Democratico veramente moderno, libero da personalismi, vecchie logiche, e svincolato dalla violenta e cieca battaglia interna tra le correnti che portano solo malanno.

Non vacillo sulla speranza, non mi rassegno all'impossibilità di una nuova sinistra. Ma sento tutt'attorno venir meno quel senso di sostegno, di appartenenza dell'elettorato che è poi il cemento con cui consolidare il tutto. Mi aspetto dunque che tra le priorità dei prossimi lavori venga messo in primo piano l'ascolto e il dialogo con chi nel PD ci ha creduto, lo ha sostenuto, noi. La base.

Le prossime settimane, i prossimi mesi ci diranno se la lezione sarà stata finalmente imparata e le voci ascoltate. Se così non fosse dubito che in futuro molti si affanneranno nel tentativo di cementare le crepe.

From the PD to a new Left wing?

I wrote it in an article a few weeks ago: the PD, sooner or later, had to come to terms with its confused, indefinite, sometimes irritating identity. And it happened. But in the worst of ways: during the votation for the President of the Republic. And to kill the party wasn't just the Renzi area, but also the Bersani area.

But something happened that was even worse than the eternal clash between ex demochristians and ex communists: in an extremely difficult socio-economical-democratical momento for the country, the PD has divided itself into various currents - all fighting each other - which, closed in the dark rooms of the palace, have "burnt" Marini and betrayed Prodi - the founder of the PD, its most authoritative exponent - just to avoid letting the opposite side win. All of this, regardless of the problems of the country, regardless of the desires of the voters - who invoked the election of Stefano Rodotà - and even regardless of the loyal ally, that SEL who has been prepared a trap in the attempt to make it appear as the traitor of Prodi, in the attempt to cover up the mistakes.

And it won't be enough to change Bersani with Renzi, or change Finocchiaro with Richetti: what makes the PD inadequate and ready to explode at any time is - I repeat - its confused nature, that slows down its political action, its proposing to the public opinion of programs that can be clearly identified in a conservative or progressist wing.

In the meanwhile SEL has - obviously - shut down the relationships with this PD, more interested in surviving than making itself useful to solve Italy's problems. And Vendola, after saying no to Napolitano and voting Rodotà, has announced a future Rome assembly for the 8th of May, in which to start building a path for a "large, popular, governamental left wing". "Not a new rainbow left", Vendola has made it clear.

I don't know what exactly will be discussed in that meeting, but I am certain of one thing: we need a left without a "center" in front of it, and that doesn't have testimony minorities that are deadly for every political ambition. A secular, modern left wing, antiliberist and ecologist, that can put human rights at the top of its political programs. We need a left that can survive its leaders because the left wing is something much bigger and more noble than the biographies of 2 - 3 political leaders and their parties: the left is the brave voice of despair that is channeled in a fascinating human, and thus political experience. The left is, and must be, property of the people.

The left wing, as I wrote a few weeks ago, has the triple responsibility the right wing has: beyond leading the present, it must immagine and build the future. And it must realize that its defeat is the one of the weakest parts of the population. It must understand that it is a crime to leave them at the hand of the conservative perversions of the right. Because where the left is missing, equality, respect of human rights and respect for the planet we live on lack as well.

We need courage. We need to analyze our consciences. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror: but not only our political leaders: we, simple activists must do the same. And start by asking for honesty, competence and courage. Courage to defend the left wing identity, of course, but also not being afraid of indicating horizons that go beyond the national borders, because the future of our civilization is more and more decided outside of Italy. And I don't only indicate a probable adesion to the European Socialist Party on behalf of SEL or the next political party we'll have, but also an important move in European politics, through political actions that see the environment, jobs and human rights as protagonists in the game. Because Europe was born and was prospered that way, and it's dying because it has forgotten those values.

Left wing, go out in the light of the sun. Don't be afraid of your noble identity or of your people. Your loving assemblies are passional hugs to life and democracy. The future is yours.

Odiando un pochetto, che male vi fo?

Ormai appare abbastanza chiaro, pur con la dovuta cautela, che davvero il nuovo Papa sia intenzionato a modernizzare la propria Chiesa, anche, magari, con parziali ritorni alle origini.

Da parte nostra, noi laici condizionati culturalmente da questi due millenni di Papato in terra di penisola (con una vacanza in periodo avignonese), potremmo pure noi riappropriarci di qualcosa a cui avevamo dovuto rinunciare proprio a causa di tali condizionamenti. Fra tutti, una emozione eccessivamente biasimata: l'odio.

Non vi è altra emozione che sia stata tanto vituperata: anche il sesso, per dire, tanto osteggiato dalla Chiesa, viene considerato ciononostante fatalmente, orribilmente necessario per la procreazione; pur, ovviamente, con le innumerevoli limitazioni d'ordinanza.

Ma l'odio? Guai! Bisogna rinunciarvi senza eccezione alcuna, sostituendolo anzi con amore supplementare: sì, amare il proprio nemico, una specie di free climbing, uno sport estremo dell'anima.

Eppure, l'odio è una emozione molto intensa, non dovrebbe venire ostracizzata in modo così banalmente perentorio. E' contraria ma uguale all'amore: possiamo fare un paragone col ghiaccio e fuoco, le sensazioni che provocano sono molto simili, malgrado siano due opposti.

Chiaramente qui non si sta parlando della resa, della sudditanza a un odio da personaggio Shakespeariano, travolgente, ineluttabile e immarcescibile; certo che non bisogna essere schiavi, prede, come d'altronde è nocivo per un sano vivere l'amore altrettanto smisurato.
No, stiamo parlando di un odio compassato e passeggero, intenso al punto giusto, che non condizioni la vita nè di chi lo vive nè di chi lo subisce, ma che infonda quella giusta dose di adrenalina che fa sentire vivi. Un odio non attivo (non creare il male alla musa dell'odio), ma passivo (godere minutamente di qualche male estemporaneo della musa dell'odio).

Io non ho odiato moltissimo nella vita, direi due-tre volte, forse quattro. E in tutti questi casi, ho sentito la vita scorrere possente dentro di me, e in un caso forse me l'ha pure salvata.
So che molti non saranno d'accordo con questo mio punto di vista; a costoro chiedo soltanto di non odiarmi troppo. Solo un po'.

By hating a little, what damage do I do?

It seems pretty clear, even with the due care, that the new Pope is truly intentioned to modernize the Church, even - perhaps - with partial returns to the origins.

On our side, us laicists conditioned culturally by these two millenia of Pope presence on our peninsula (with a brief vacancy during the Avignon time), we could take back something we had to give up because of this conditioning. Among all, one emotion that is way too ostracized: hate.

There is no emotion that is so vituperated: even sex, which is so condemned by the Church, is considered to be fatally, horibly necessary to procreate. With the countless limitations that come with it, of course.

But hate? No way! You need to give it up without exceptions, and substituting it with supplementary love: yes, hate your enemy, a sort of free climbing, extreme sport of the soul.

And yet hate is an extremely intense emotion, it shouldn't be ostracized in such a trivially imperative fashion. It is contrary but equal to love: we can make a similarity with ice and fire, the sensations they bring are very similar, although they are opposites.

We clearly aren't speaking about yielding, the subjection to a hate worthy of a Shakespearian character, overwhelming, ineluctable and unfading; of course we mustn't be slaves, pray, as it is unhealthy to have an equally immeasurable love.

No, we're talking about a passing, moderate hate, intense at the right point, which shouldn't condition the lives of who lives it or soffers it, but that can give that right dose of adrenaline that will make us feel alive. A non active hate, but a passive one.

I haven't hated much in life, maybe two, three, maybe four times. And in all these cases, I felt the life flow strongly inside me, and in one case maybe it even saved my life. I know many people won't agree with my point of view; the these people I only ask to not hate my too much. Only a little bit.

L'Europa del XVI e XVII sec era in costante tumulto. La fortissima Chiesa Cattolica veniva attaccata da Calvinisti, Protestanti, Luterani, gruppi che si combattevano anche a vicenda.

Il regno della Regina Elisabetta portò un po' di pace, specialmente dopo che l'Inghilterra sconfisse l'Armada Spagnola, ma la pace non durò a lungo. In Italia, la potente famiglia dei Medici entrava e usciva di grazia, il che ha creato ondate e increspature in tutto il paese e persino in tutto il mondo. E cose se non fosse abbastanza, la Guerra dei 30 anni iniziò proprio durante questo periodo. Ho menzionato il fatto che Germania e Bohemia erano in tumulto religioso e politico?

Se vivendo in questo periodo avessi sentito che esisteva un'intera parte di mondo che era praticamente vuota, non avresti pensato di andartene? In effetti, molte persone non solo hanno pensato di andarsene, lo hanno davvero fatto, anche se hanno dovuto attraversare acque che pochissime altre persone avevano mai attraversano, e senza essere del tutto certi di ciò che avrebbero trovato dall'altra parte. Negli Stati Uniti, noi chiamiamo queste persone "pellegrini".

C'è un fatto strano sui pellegrini. Nonostante avessero lasciato l'Europa a causa della persecuzione religiosa, quando hanno trovato i Nativi Americani, che erano su quel territorio da centinaia di anni, la reazione immediata è stata "Ew". Il comico Eddie Izzard dice in uno dei suoi sketch: "I pellegrini guardarono come i Nativi Americani erano vestiti e dissero, - uhm, cos'è tutto questo, per favore?". Le usanze dei Nativi Americani erano molto diverse, il loro stile di vita sconosciuto, e avevano un aspetto molto diverso. I pellegrini che stavano cercando libertà religiosa si trasformarono rapidamente nello stesso tipo di persone da cui fuggivano. Dimenticarono le loro radici.

Si vede questo tipo di pattern in tutto il mondo online. Ho visto persone che hanno iniziato allo stesso tempo con me, presentarsi come se avessero raggiunto il successo solamente grazie ai loro propri sforzi. Senz'altro, bisogna lavorare per avere successo in qualsiasi cosa, ma in social media "le persone" giocano un ruolo importante nel determinare l'ascesa o meno della tua stella. Se nessuno legge i tuoi post, non importa quanti ne scrivi. Se nessuno condivide i tuoi tweet o ti risponde, potresti anche twittare tutto il giorno a un muro.

Ancora peggio, le persone tendono a dimenticare com'era essere dei novizi nel mondo online. Trattano le persone nuove come anche loro una volta erano stati trattati, ma in qualche modo dimenticano quella parte del loro viaggio. Dimenticano la frustrazione, la curva di apprendimento, il desiderio di lasciar perdere, e tutte le altre cose che sono parte dell'esperienza quando si comincia la propria avventura sui social media.

Non dimenticate mai il vostro viaggio. Non dimenticate com'era essere l'ultimo piolo della scala, anche se ce la fate ad arrivare al piolo più alto. Questa lezione è tanto valida nella vita quando per i social media. Non siete d'accordo?

Remembering your roots

Europe in the 16th century through the 17th century was in constant turmoil. The once dominant Catholic Church was being attacked by Calvinists, Protestants, Lutherans, and those groups were also fighting amongst themselves.

The reign of Queen Elizabeth brought some peace, especially after England trounced the Spanish Armada, but the peace did not last long. In Italy, the powerful Medici family ran in and out of favor, which created waves and ripples throughout the country and even throughout the world. As if that wasn’t enough, the 30 Years War started during this time period too. And did I mention that Germany and Bohemia were in religious and political turmoil?

If you were living through this time period and then heard that there was a whole part of the world that was virtually free of people, would you not think about getting away? In fact, many people not only contemplated leaving, they actually did, even though they had to travel by boat across waters that very few people had crossed, and even though they weren’t sure of exactly what they would find on the other side. In the US, we call these people the pilgrims.

There’s a funny fact about the pilgrims. Even though they left Europe because of religious persecution, when they happened upon Native Americans who had been on the land for centuries already, the immediate reaction was, “Ew.” As comedian Eddie Izzard says in one of his routines, “The pilgrims looked at how the Native Americans were dressed and said, ‘Uh, what’s all of this, please?’” The ways of the Native Americans were different, their way of living was unfamiliar, and they looked different. The pilgrims who were searching for religious freedom rather quickly turned into the exact kinds of people they had run away from. They forgot their roots.

You run into this same kind of pattern in the online world. I have seen people who started at just about the same time as me present themselves as if they had achieved success solely because of their own effort. Granted, you have to work to find success in anything, but in social media, “the people” play a major role in determining whether you will see your star rise. If no one reads your blog posts, it doesn’t matter how many you write. If no one shares your tweets or replies to you, you might as well tweet all day to a wall.

Even more disturbing, people sometimes seem to forget what it was like to be new to the online world. They treat newer people the way they once were treated, but they somehow forget that part of their journey. They forget the frustration, the learning curve, the desire to give up, and all of the other things that are part of your experience when you are just beginning your social media adventure.

Never forget your journey. Never forget what it was like to be on the lowest rung of the ladder, even if you make it to the highest rung. This lesson holds true for life as much as it holds true for social media. Don’t you agree?

Sono già 36 le donne uccise in Italia nel 2013, secondo quanto riporta Vanity Fair. E non si contano le violenze fisiche e verbali. Una spirale vorticosa oscura e maledetta, che non conosce fine. Un cancro che si ramifica sempre di più nel corpo già malato della nostra società.

E proseguendo lungo la via dei Martiri della violenza, arriviamo al razzismo, al sessismo, alla violenza diffusa sul web. Le ultime vittime - illustri - si chiamano Laura Boldrini e Cécile Kyenge, la nuova Ministra dell'Integrazione.

La prima ha denunciato il clima d'odio che si respira sempre di più sulla rete, parlando degli insulti, delle minacce che sempre di più coinvolgono la sua figura, anche perché donna (e quindi, secondo una visione vetero-maschilista tutta italiana, incapace di avere ruoli istituzionali di primo piano). Alcuni hanno volutamente travisato il senso delle sue parole, gridando alla «censura voluta dalla Boldrini», una che «fa solo finta di essere di sinistra». Manco se per essere di sinistra servano patenti particolari distribuite da qualcuno di più saggio e puro degli altri. Manco se essere di sinistra, significhi farsi insultare e minacciare senza ribellarsi. Astrusità perverse. Ma andiamo avanti.

Il veleno razzista ha colpito (per la verità prevedibilmente), la neo Ministra all'Integrazione, l'italo-congolese Cécile Kyenge, colpevole - incredibile a dirsi nel 2013 - di essere «nera». Bene ha risposto lei, dicendosi «fiera» sia delle sue origini, che del suo essere italiana e della sua pelle nera. Meglio neri fuori che dentro, aggiungerei io.

In tanti, anche in buonafede, invocano leggi speciali, misure (anche detentive) durissime contro questi fenomeni d'odio e di violenza. Io credo sia estremamente sbagliato affrontare questi argomenti solo dal lato della pura e semplice repressione punitiva. Credo che la questione centrale, mai toccata veramente dalla pubblica opinione, sia complessa ma anche semplice: in tutte queste vicende, manca il rispetto. Il rispetto per la donna accanto, che non è un oggetto da usare per poi disfarsene quando non risponde più ai propri comandi. Il rispetto per chi, pur avendo idee politiche diverse e ricoprendo un ruolo complesso in un momento difficile, può meritare critiche, certo, ma non insulti o minacce. Perché la rete è uno strumento utilissimo per la democrazia. Ma le contumelie dimostrano la pochezza di chi le diffonde. Tanto più le minacce vigliacche, sinonimo di incapacità cognitiva. E cosa c'è di più vigliacco del razzismo, derivato melmoso e maleodorante dell'ignoranza?

Secondo il mio modesto parere, per combattere questi fenomeni regressivi della nostra civiltà, serve una rivoluzione culturale che metta al centro della scena pubblica la persona e i suoi diritti. Aldilà del suo genere, del suo orientamento sessuale, del colore della pelle o della propria religione. Punire con multe o pene detentive non servirà a certi soggetti per migliorare o cambiare la propria piccola e perversa mentalità criminale. Solo attuando un radicale cambiamento culturale - che parta dalle istituzioni, passando per scuola e media, finendo alle famiglie - renderemo certi maschi uomini adulti; certi bulli del web meno vigliacchi e più utili alla democrazia, e magari riusciremo a far capire a chi giudica una persona dal colore della pelle, che le discriminazioni sono un esercizio malvagio quanto stupido, ed anche un boomerang doloroso.

Femminicides and bullying on the web? The antidote is called respect

There have already been 36 women killed in Italy in 2013, according to Vanity Fair. And the physical and verbal violence is uncountable. An obscure, cursed downward spiral, without an end. A cancer that is radicating itself more and more in the already sick body of our society.

And going on along the way of the Martirs of violence, we get to racism, sexism, to violence diffused on the web. The most recent victims - famous ones - are called Laura Boldrini and Cécile Kyenge, the new Minister of Integration.

The former has talked about the climate of hate that is spreading along the web, the insults, the threats that more and more surround her person, also because she is a woman (and thus, according to a maschilist, Italian vision, incapable of having institutional roles of some importance). Some people have willingly misinterpreted her words, shouting to the "censorship Boldrini wants", a person who "is only pretending to be from the left wing". As if in order to be in the left wing you need special permissions distributed by someone who is wiser and purer than the others. As if being in the left wing meant to allow others to insult and threat you without protesting. Perverse obscurities. But let's go on.

The racist venom has struck (quite predictably) the neo Minister of Integration, Italian Congolese Cécile Kyenge, guilty - incredible to say it in 2013 - of being "black". She answered well, declaring herself proud of her origins, her being Italian and her black skin. Better black on the outside than on the inside, I'd add.

Many, even in good faith, cry out for special laws, hard measures against these phenomena of hate and violence. I think it is extremely wrong to face these topics only from the side of simple repression. I believe the main matter, never truly touched by the public opinion, is complex but also simple: in all these cases, the one thing missing is respect. The respect for the woman next to you, who is not an object to be used and thrown away when it no longer responds to your commands. The respect for those who, even if with different political ideas, and covering a complex role in a difficult moment, can deserve criticism, of course, but not insults or threats. Because the web is a useful tool for democracy. But the contumely prove the worthlesness of those who diffuse them. Moreso the cowardly threats, a synonym for cognitive incapacity. And what is more cowardly than racism, a stinky derivation of ignorance?

In my humble opinion, in order to fight these regressive phenomena of our civilization, we need a cultural revolution that can put at the center of the political scene the person and its rights. Regardless of gender, sexual orientation, skin color or religion. Punishing with fines or confinement won't serve certain people to change their small, perverse criminal mentality. Only by carrying on a radical cultural change - which starts from institutions, passing through school and media, and finishing with families - will we make certain males adult men; certain bullies of the web less coward and more useful to democracy, and perhaps we'll manage to make those who judge a person by the color of its skin understand that discriminations are an evil exercise as well as a stupid one, but also also a painful boomerang.

Un metodo d’indagine che lo porta sulla strada dei rapporti tra mafia e grande imprenditoria, un filone che mette paura sia alle cosche sia a chi fa compagnia a quella “mafia entrata in Borsa”.

Il vero problema per Cosa Nostra è che Giovanni Falcone, come direttore degli Affari Penali al Ministero di Grazia e Giustizia si sta rivelando più pericoloso che a Palermo: ha rivoluzionato la rotazione delle sezioni in Cassazione, conseguenza che porterà il giudice Corrado Carnevale, detto l’ammazzasentenze, a non giudicare l’esito finale del maxi-processo, e nel frattempo sta mettendo a punto il progetto della Direzione Investigativa Antimafia e della Direzione Nazionale Antimafia per coordinare le indagini sulla criminalità organizzata.

Giovanni Falcone è il pericolo numero uno per Cosa Nostra. E’ un magistrato capace, che impaurisce anche gli amici dell’organizzazione, e se è stato in grado di condizionare il ministro Martelli per la costituzione di DIA e DNA, non è escluso che possa convincere anche altri sull’importanza del contrasto al crimine organizzato. Falcone per Cosa Nostra deve morire. In Sicilia.

Prima di lui la strategia di Cosa Nostra colpisce l’onorevole Salvo Lima, che insieme ad Andreotti e ai fratelli Salvo non rappresenta più una cordata affidabile per difendere gli interessi delle ‘famiglie’. I corleonesi agitano la bandiera che meglio conoscono, quella del terrore e degli avvertimenti.

Lo stesso Falcone però, dopo aver scontato gli anni tesi di Palermo del corvo e della mancata elezione a capo dell’ufficio istruzione del tribunale, sconta anche l’ostracismo delle varie correnti politiche interne alla magistratura: lo sbarramento al suo arrivo a capo della costituenda Direzione Nazionale Antimafia sembra essere l’esigenza primaria anche tra le correnti di sinistra del Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura.

I passi avanti che Falcone è determinato a compiere fanno maturare il disegno per la sua eliminazione da parte della mafia e di chi se ne serve. Il 23 maggio del 1992 allo svincolo di Capaci il tritolo fa saltare in aria il magistrato, la moglie Francesca Morvillo e gli agenti della scorta Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo e Antonio Montinaro.

Quel 23 maggio ha cambiato per sempre la storia di questo Paese e ha rotto gli equilibri politici di quei giorni: si elegge il presidente della Repubblica e Andreotti e Forlani sembrano i due papabili, fino all’esplosione di quel pomeriggio. Uscirà vincitore Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, poi accolto ai funerali di Falcone tra gli insulti della gente di Palermo.

“La mafia ha votato?”, si chiedono in molti ancora oggi. Una domanda a cui si può rispondere che piuttosto la mafia ha voluto fare piazza pulita di uno dei suoi più acuti interpreti, determinato a portare alla luce quel patto scellerato tra gli uomini del disonore e le grandi holding imprenditoriali del Belpaese (vedi indagine Mafia & Appalti).

Nel frattempo in Lombardia impazza Tangentopoli, mentre gli occhi di molti si rivolgono subito verso Paolo Borsellino, amico e collega di Giovanni Falcone, ma anche custode dei segreti delle indagini dello stesso. Un altro “morto che cammina”, consapevole di esserlo. L’estate caldissima del 1992 è alle porte, e gli uomini di Cosa Nostra sono pronti a fare il bis in poco meno di tre mesi.

Stories of dishonor: mafia and entrepreneurs, the intuition behind Falcone's death

“Follow the money”. That's what Giovanni Falcone has been doing since the times of the Spatola trial and the great inquiries regarding Cosa Nostra's drug traffic between Italy and the US. An inquiries method that takes him on the road of the relationshis between mafia and entrepreneurship, a line that threatens the gangs and those who support the "mafia who entered the stock market".

The true problem for Cosa Nostra is that Giovanni Falcone, as the director fo Penal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice is far more dangerous than in Palermo: he revolutionized the rotation of sections in Cassazione, which will ensure that the judge Corrado Carnevale, the "verdict killer" will not be judging the final result of the maxi-trial, and in the meanwhile he's perfecting the project of the Investigative Antimafia Direction and of the Antimafia Nnational Direction to coordinate inquiries on organized crime.

Giovanni Falcone is the number one danger for Cosa Nostra. He's a good judge, who is feared even by the friends of the organization, and if he was capable of influencing Minister Martelli for the constitution of DIA and DNA, he could also convince others about the importance of fighting organized crime. For Cosa Nostra, Falcone must die. In Sicily.

Before him the strategy of Cosa Nostra hits Salvo Lima, who together with Andreotti and the Salvo brothers does not represent a reliable resource to defend the interests of the families anymore. The Corleones show the flag they know best, the one of terror and threats.

The same Falcone however, after suffering the difficult years of the Palermo of the raven and the missed election as the head of the office of the court, also suffers the hate of several internal political currents of the judiciary system: blocking his arrival as head of the Antimafia National Direction seems to be a primary goal even among the left wing currents of the Superior Council.

The steps forward that Falcone is determined to make, allow the project for his elimination to be completed by the mafia and those who use it. On the 23rd of May 1992, right before the Capaci exit, TNT explodes killing the judge, his wife Francesca Morvillo and agents Vito Schifani, Rocco Ddicillo and Antonio Montinaro.

That 23rd of May has changed the history of this country forever, and has broken the political balances of those days: the President is being elected, Andreotti and Forlani seem to be the ones, until the explosion that afternoon. The winner will be Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, later received at the funeral of Falcone among the insults of the people of Palermo.

"Did the mafia vote?", many ask themselves even today. A question which can be answered only with the fact that the mafia wanted to eliminate one of its most acute scholars, determined to bring out the pact between the men of dishonor and the great holdings of Italy (see the Mafia and Contracts inquiry).

In the meanwhile Tangentopoli is shredding Lombardy, while the eyes of many go to Paolo Borsellino, friend and colleague of Giovanni Falcone, but also the keeper of the secrets of the latter's inquiries. Another "dead man walking", and aware of being one. The hot summer of 1992 is coming, and the Cosa Nostra men are ready for the new strike in less than three months.

Eleonora Bianchini, giornalista emiliana autrice di "Il libro che la Lega Nord non ti farebbe mai leggere", e collaboratrice nel libro "La Lobby di Dio".

In primo luogo abbiamo chiesto ad Eleonora di raccontarci qualcosa a proposito del suo libro, "Il libro che la Lega Nord non ti farebbe mai leggere": si tratta di un testo pubblicato a Dicembre del 2010, scritto in soli sei mesi, e che raccoglie gli scandali della Lega prima del grande scandalo di Aprile dell'anno scorso, quando il partito di Bossi è esploso ed è avvenuto il passaggio di consegne a Maroni.

Il libro dunque raccoglie la storia della Lega Nord a partire dalla Guardia Nazionale Padana, passando per le Camicie Verdi ed arrivando a Bossi ministro e le discriminazioni nei confronti degli immigrati, delle donne, dei comunisti. Una lettura agevole e a tratti simpatica, ma che allo stesso tempo riesce ad evidenziare tanti paradossi, elementi che hanno creato dibattito negli ultimi 20 anni di politica italiana, che ha visto al centro uno dei protagonisti più originali nel partito della Lega Nord.

C'è stato molto interesse nei confronti del libro, specialmente da parte dei giovani, differenziato a seconda della zona di provenienza: al nord c'è più attenzione nei confronti dei rapporti politici e non tra Bossi e Berlusconi, mentre al sud ci sono questioni diverse che vengono portate alla luce.

Uno degli aspetti forse più affascinanti è che le persone negano anche l'evidenza dei fatti: a Eleonora è capitato di confrontarsi con leghisti anche a distanza, via Facebook, ma il suo reiterato invito per un confronto non è mai stato accolto. Non si è mai entrati nel merito della discussione, anche se le occasioni non sono certamente mancate. Lo stesso è accaduto con Borghezio, che ha rifiutato l'incontro nel momento in cui gli è stato proposto.

Purtroppo moltissime persone non si basano sui fatti quando si formano un giudizio, come ad esempio avviene a Napoli con le inchieste di Saviano, ma secondo Eleonora sarebbe stato lo stesso andando nelle valli bergamasche. A livello generale si tratta di un problema culturale abbastanza ampio, che trova ampio riscontor anche nelle fasce di elettori del PDL. Nonostante si portino i fatti e le incoerenze, si rimane ancorati nella propria opinione, come se non ci fosse la volontà di recepire la gravità di certi atti, o perché magari si è travlti dal carisma di determinate personalità politiche.

Qualsiasi fatto che possa accadere non è dunque valutato nella sua oggettività, e le argomentazioni che vengono portate sono molto deboli: eppure negli ultimi 20 anni hanno fatto molta presa, anche come modalità e come approccio.

Abbiamo chiesto ad Eleonora se a suo avviso il sistema informativo italiano ha qualche responsabilità nella situazione che si è venuta a creare: la risposta è sì, e una delle ragioni potrebbe essere il fatto che venga dato troppo spazio alla politica interna. Siamo un paese occidentale in cui gli Esteri ricoprono uno spazio estremamente ridotto, si parla di Stati Uniti e poco altro. Si sa poco o niente di Asia, di Africa, e persino dell'Europa intesa come Comunità Europea. Sembra quasi che non tocchi le nostre vite, e che l'unico punto di contatto sia una moneta, mentre in altri paesi non è assolutamente così.

All'estero inoltre c'è una certa conoscenza della politica italiana, e si è in grado di capire qual è il quadro politico nella sua interezza. Berlusconi è stato per moltissimo tempo sulle prime pagine dei giornali stranieri, anche se per vicende collaterali alla politica.

A few days ago we interviewed Eleonora Bianchini, journalist and author of "The book the Lega Nord would never have you read" and collaborator in the book "God's Lobby".

First of all we asked Eleonora to tell us something about her book about the Lega Nord: it was published in December 2010, written in only 6 months, and gathers the Lega scandals before the big April scandal last year, when Bossi's party exploded and was handed down to Maroni.

So the book talks about the history of the Lega Nord starting from the National Padania Guard, the Green Shirts, Bossi minister and the discrimination of immigrants, women and communists. An easy and sometimes even funny read, but at the same time one that manages to point out the contradictions, the elements that have created a debate during the last 20 years of Italian politics, which has seen the Lega Nord at the center as one of its most original protagonists.

There has been a lot of interest towards the book, especially from the young ones, an interest that was differentiated according to the area: in the north there is more attention towards the political and non political relationships between Bossi and Berlusconi, whereas in the south there are other matters at hand.

The picture seems pretty simple to me. The others run either to represent a part (center right), or to give voice to all the insatisfactions of Italy (Grillo), or to try to be determinant in the composition of the future Parliament majority (Monti). It's still unclear why Ingroia is running. His initial idea, to give Parliament representance to movements, to associations and to a whole series of civic sobjects that are often at the sides of official politics, had a logic, a political dignity but most of all I thought it would be a winner at an elections level.

Too bad that in a matter of weeks the inspirators of this elections cartel have been set aside. The only goal remained to the ex judge of Palermo is to break the balls to Bersani and Vendola, hoping that in Campania and Sicily they will get enough votes so there will be no majority at the Senate. The same tactic used by Berlusconi who has recovered the Northern League in order to get some votes in Lombardia and Veneto.

Now, there's no agreement or appeal for a useful vote that will work here. It would be a mistake to panic and throw away all the work done so far by only showing the tactic or the numbers that never truly work out.

Here we can only make the voters understand that, with all the defects and also some contradictions, . Today, directs capitals abroad, more civil rights for who hasn't got any, more social justice and equality in the labor market. And then green politics, broadband, technological innovation, more generational rechange, more law enforcement, and so on. No useful vote. A responsible vote.

Giornalisti bersaglio della #mafia: storie di cronisti dalla schiena dritta

A Marilù Mastrogiovanni hanno rubato i computer della redazione, l'hanno minacciata, intimidita. Le hanno ucciso alcuni cuccioli di cane e querelata. Un processo durato otto anni da cui è uscita, poi, assolta.

Marilena Natale, invece, è stata spintonata, malmenata, offesa. Le hanno incendiato l'auto e sparato due colpi di pistola dall'alto sul tettuccio. Una mattina, poi, la figlia di Michele Albanese, all'uscita della scuola, si rivolse al padre con il viso quasi in lacrime: “Papà che significa 'mpamu, un mio compagno di scuola mi ha detto che lui non parla con i figli di 'mpamu”. 'Mpamu, in dialetto calabrese, significa infame, vile, traditore. Ed è l'appellativo con cui gli uomini della 'ndrangheta apostrofano i giornalisti che con le loro inchieste “danno fastidio” ai loro affari illeciti.

Marilù, Marilena e Michele sono tre cronisti. Tre tra i 1393 giornalisti minacciati in Italia dal 2006 ad oggi. Un numero impressionante, che aumenta di giorno in giorno e che viene monitorato da Ossigeno per l'Informazione, l'osservatorio diretto da Alberto Spampinato che si occupa di raccontare le storie dei giornalisti intimiditi, di offrire sostegno, vicinanza e supporto. Alberto è fratello di Giovanni Spampinato, giornalista de L'Ora di Palermo ucciso dalla mafia nel 1972, a Ragusa. A condannare a morte Giovanni erano stati i suoi articoli, che facevano luce su uno strano omicidio compiuto dal figlio di un noto magistrato di Ragusa. Giovanni era stato l'unico a scriverlo, e per questo è stato punito.

Così come Cosimo Cristina, Mauro De Mauro, Carlo Casalegno, Peppino Impastato, Mario Francese, Walter Tobagi, Pippo Fava, Giancarlo Siani, Mauro Rostagno, Beppe Alfano. Undici cronisti uccisi dalle mafie e dal terrorismo. Nove in Sicilia, uno in Campania, Piemonte e Lombardia. Dal 1993 la mafia non ha più ucciso. Ma i quasi 1400 cronisti minacciati in 7 anni dimostrano che le intimidazioni, e i tentativi di ridurre al silenzio l'informazione non sono affatto finiti.

Potrei raccontare le storie di Ester Castano, giornalista ventiduenne della provincia milanese perseguitata per un anno da querele pretestuose e tentativi di zittire il suo lavoro. O di Leonardo Orlando, cronista de La Gazzetta del Sud a cui è stata incendiata, nelle scorse settimane, la sua automobile durante la notte. E poi ci sono i nomi più noti: Rosaria Capacchione, Lirio Abbate, Giovanni Tizian, Roberto Saviano costretti a vivere sotto scorta per aver osato scoprire, scrivere, raccontare e denunciare. Storie diverse ma tutte uguali, un elenco infinito (qui la tabella di Ossigeno in continuo aggiornamento) di giornalisti che fanno solo il proprio lavoro e niente di più. Ma che per questo vengono minacciati.

Ed è a questi giornalisti che io penso quando immagino l'informazione italiana. Da giornalista, e da lettore, non vorrei mai aver visto dei colleghi rincorrere un leader politico sulla spiaggia sperando in una battuta o dei reporter intervistare un bambino di 11 anni, figlio dell'uomo che ha sparato contro due carabinieri all'esterno di Palazzo Chigi. Tutto in nome del “Dio Scoop”. Ma cosa è, poi davvero, uno scoop?

L'Italia è al 57esimo posto nella classifica sulla libertà di stampa di Reporter Sans Frontieres. Dopo Ungheria e Moldavia, Botswana e Sudafrica. C'è bisogno di ossigeno, di giornalismo puro, di leggi e di una spinta che provenga dal basso. Dai lettori, che devono richiedere e pretendere il loro diritto ad una libera, corretta e non sensazionalistica informazione. E da noi giornalisti, soprattutto, per non scendere sempre più in basso e per ridare aria pulita alla nostra categoria. C'è giornalismo e giornalismo; bisogna solo scegliere da che parte stare.

Journalists target of the mafia: stories of people with a straight back

They stole Marilù Mastrogiovanni's computers from the newsroom, they threatened her, intimidated her. They killed her puppies and sued her. A trial 8 years long, from which she came out innocent.

Marilena Natale was pushed around, beaten, insulted. They set her car on fire and shot through the car from above. One morning, Michele Albanese's daughter, when coming out of school, told her father in tears: "Daddy, what does 'mpamu means, my classmates told me they don't talk with 'mpamu's kids." 'Mpamu, in Calabrian dialect, means infamous, vile, traitor. And that's the name the mafia people give to journalists who bother their illegal business with inquiries and scoops.

Marilù, Marilena and Michele are three journalists. Three among the 1393 journalists threatened in Italy from 2006 until today. An impressive number, which only goes up day after day and is being monitored by Oxygen for information, the observatory directed by Alberto Spampinato that deals with telling the stories of intimidated journalists, offering support. Alberto is the brother of Giovanni Spampinato, a journalist of L'Ora di Palermo, killed by the mafia in 1972 in Ragusa. Giovanni's sentence to death were his articles, which shed light on a strange homicide done by the son of a famous Ragusa judge. Giovanni was the only one to write about it, and hence he was punished.

Just like Cosimo Cristina, Mauro De Mauro, Carlo Casalegno, Peppino Impastato, Mario Francese, Walter Tobagi, Pippo Fava, Giancarlo Siani, Mauro Rostagno, Beppe Alfano. Eleven journalists killed by mafia and terrorism. Nine in Sicily, one in Campania, Piemonte and Lombardia each. The mafia has stopped killing since 1993. But the almost 1400 journalists threatened in 7 years time prove that intimidations and attempts to silence information are far from over.

I could tell you the story of Ester Castano, a 22 year old journalist near Milan, persecuted for a year by pretextuous lawsuits and attempts to silence her work. Or Leonardo Orlando, journalist for the Gazzetta del Sud, whose car was set on fire a few weeks ago during the night. And then there's the most famous names: Rosaria Capacchione, Lirio Abbate, Giovanni Tizian, Roberto Saviano, constrained to live under escort for daring to reveal, write, tell, accuse. Different stories, but all the same, an infinite list of journalists who do their jobs and nothing more. But that are getting threatened because of it.

And it's about these journalists I think about when I imagine Italian information. As a journalist, and as a reader, I wish I had never seen my colleagues run after a political leader on a beach, hoping to get some words out of him, or reporters interview an eleven years old boy, the son of the man who shot two carabinieri outside Palazzo Chigi the other week. All in the name of the Scoop God. But what is, really, a scoop?

Italy is 57th in the chart for print freedom, put together by Reporter Sans Frontieres. After Hungary and Moldova, Botswana and South Africa. We need oxygen, pure journalism, laws and a drive from beneath. From readers, who must ask and demand their right to an information that is free, correct and not sensational. And us journalists, most of all, in order to not go down in quality, and bring some fresh air to our category. There's journalism and there's journalism: you just need to choose on which side you're going to stay.
