Google has announced that its web store "Google.com/phone" for the Nexus One has not performed as well as expected. Once they increase retail availability they will close the store. The Nexus One will still be avaialble from Intlo.com

While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from.

The new Nexus S smart phone can do something older Android devices can’t: make payments.
Nexus S, from Samsung Electronics Co., is the first phone to run the latest version of Google’s Android software and has a feature called Near Field Communication.

With it, someone can wave the phone near a bar code or sensor to make payments in much the same way people can already swipe a security card to enter a building.

The software also makes it easy to place phone calls over the Internet, something people can already do from a PC using software programs such as Skype.

The phones will be available through Best Buy Co. Inc. stores starting Dec. 16. People can either sign up for a two-year contact with T-Mobile USA Inc. and pay $199 for the phone, or forgo a contact and pay $529 for just the device.

Telecoms: new measures to counter data roaming bill shocks, lower roaming call price caps

From 1 July 2010 consumers no longer need to worry about accidentally running up huge bills when they connect to the internet using mobile networks via a phone or computer when abroad in the EU. Thanks to the EU's roaming rules, from 1st July travellers' data-roaming limit will be automatically set at €50 excluding VAT (unless they have chosen another limit - higher or lower). Operators will have to send users a warning when they reach 80% of their data-roaming bill limit.

The operator will have to cut off the mobile internet connection once the limit has been reached, unless the customer has indicated they want to continue data roaming that particular month. In addition, maximum wholesale prices for data roaming will fall from €1 to 80 cents per MegaByte. The maximum price for making a roaming call will be cut to 39 cents per minute (excluding VAT), instead of the current 43 cents, while receiving a call will cost a maximum of 15 cents per minute (excluding VAT), instead of 19 cents. The cost of making and receiving calls when abroad in the EU will now be 73% cheaper than in 2005, when the EU first started to tackle excessive roaming charges (IP/05/901).

Apple selling unlocked iPhones in Canada

Apple is trying to go where Google failed by selling unlocked phones directly to customers in Canada through its website.

Customers can purchase the eight-gigabyte iPhone 3GS for its full cost of $549, or the upcoming iPhone 4, which does not yet have a price listed on Apple's website. The customer is then free to go shopping for the best monthly service deal they can find, the company said.

"When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you'll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time," the website said.

In Canada, this means iPhone owners have considerable choice since Bell, Rogers and Telus all have networks that can accommodate Apple's devices. Bell's and Rogers' respective subsidiary brands, Virgin and Fido, also offer iPhone service plans.

Security Update for your iPhone4 4.02

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits. For this reason, there won’t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release. At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don’t count on that).

Fixing what Apple won’t

On Wednesday, Apple (finally) released firmware 4.0.2, which patches the very large security holes exploited by @comex in the 2nd incarnation of jailbreakme.com. The only problem is they outright abandoned iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G users! Even though Apple acknowledges in their security update the severity of these holes, they left iPhone2G and ipt1G owners high and dry — completely vulnerable to truly malicious variants of jailbreakme (these variants aren’t out yet, but they’re sure to come!).

Luckily for Apple, the Jailbreak community isn’t so callous. @saurik has been burning the midnight oil coding a Cydia package that will fix the holes for all devices and all firmware versions (even going back to version 2.x!). It will be released very soon, after some more testing is done. (Update: it’s available now…see update #2 below).

Since the only reason for 4.0.2 was to fix the security holes, and since the upcoming Cydia package will fix them too (and then some!), everybody should sit tight on 4.0.1 (or lower) and install the Cydia package as soon as it’s out. Jailbreakers can have their cake and eat it too.

P.S. Dear Apple: you’re welcome!

Update #1: For those who know their way around the bash shell and dpkg, please try out this fix and send any pertinent feedback to @saurik.

Update #2: The fix is installable via Cydia itself now (search for “PDF Patch”). To test that it’s working properly, visit jailbreakme.com again. After you slide to jailbreak, you should no longer see a dialog box pop up (you’ll just see the star background). That means you’re no longer vulnerable!
