Detailing the life of a therapist and his sessions with several different patients, there was a new half hour on each day and my DVR almost exploded because of it. But I still watched it from start to finish because it was so damn good, and this season, HBO is helping us out by clustering the sessions together into just two days of the week.<br /><br />Starting tomorrow, we'll get an hour each Sunday (two sessions) and 90 minutes each Monday (three sessions). Gabriel Byrne of course returns as psychiatrist Paul. Dianne Wiest is back as the shrink Paul goes to with his problems. And as I first reported months ago, the show's Emmy winner Glynn Turman will return as Alex Sr., the distraught father of a season one patient (Blair Underwood) whose storyline ended tragically. Alex Sr. and family will be suing Paul for malpractice, which will no doubt prove interesting.<br /><br />As for Paul's new patients, there's an exciting lineup: John Mahoney (Frasier's daddy!) will play a successful businessman with mounting life regrets and Hope Davis will play a former client of Paul's who blames him for an abortion she says he encouraged her to have back in the day. Paul will also be seeing a little boy whose parents are divorcing and a young lady battling cancer from what I hear.<br /><br />And there are other changes on tap this season. Our main character is no longer working out of his suburban home office. He and the wife did ultimately decide to divorce after last year's trials and he's moved back to New York where he did his training. I'm told there will be more location shots as the show embraces the city. And we're going to learn a lot more about Paul's backstory... what happened to him as a kid and why he's better with his young patients than he is with his own children.<br /><br />If you've seen "In Treatment" before, then you know why I'm so pumped for tomorrow's premiere. But if you haven't, please don't let it stop you from watching one of television's most fascinating series. You can jump in now and be good to go. Instead, the network will cluster the shows, with two episodes airing on Sundays and three on Mondays.<br /><br />"People like to dig in and watch more than one at a time," Naegle said.<br /><br />HBO is also opting for more episodes of another half-hour program -- freshman animated series "The Life & Times of Tim," The comedy, created by Steve Dildarian, will return for a second season.<br /><br />The producers of drama "Big Love," which returns on Jan. 18 for a third season, said last year's writers strike allowed them to scrap a couple of scripts and take the third season in a different direction, which kept the show's focus on the family without moving the story too quickly.<br /><br />"In the first year of the show we were constantly getting notes from HBO saying, 'Slow it down a bit, you're burning through story way too fast, you're going to come up to a third year and have nothing to write about,' " producer Mark Olsen said. "There's some merit to that. What we've done is slowed down the backstory a little bit."<br /><br />HBO had Ferrell via satellite for two panels -- for the network's telecast of his Broadway show "You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush" and "Eastbound."<br /><br />For the Bush special, Ferrell and exec producer Adam McKay said they will depict the departing president using the evening as an opportunity "to set the record straight" about his tenure.<br /><br />"Some people will think the show is too harsh, some will think it isn't harsh enough, but people should expect the unexpected," Ferrell said.<br /><br />For "Eastbound," star/co-writer Danny McBride said the series will bring a fresh take on life in the South, where he was raised.<br /><br />"We weren't really happy with the way the South was portrayed in a lot of film and television," he said. "It seemed like it kind of stopped at 'Hee Haw.' I've seen the first couple episodes and -- with the exception of a weirdly campy, uncharacteristic scene in which Patty Hewes appears as a guest on Live with Regis & Kelly -- the tone of the show remains tense and dark and continues to surprise with twists and turns. If January 7th is too long of a wait for you to hear more, check out the Damages season two preview I wrote this Summer, which is rife with scoop. And, let me add, the addition of Deadwood's Timothy Olyphant this season is a damn good one. Playing a guy whom Ellen meets in grief counseling, the two will have a sexual relationship. And it won't be long before those twists and turns I was talking about begin to involve him.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">In Treatment</span><br />If you followed the first season of HBO's In Treatment earlier this year, you know that a major highlight of the series was any scene involving the therapy of Sophie (Mia Wasikowska), a young gymnast with serious issues. Wasikowska probably won't appear in the show's second season, which debuts next year, but I'm hearing Paul (Gabriel Byrne) will take on another young patient named Oliver. Similar to Sophie, Oliver seems to come from a divorced family and is quick to challenge Paul at times, seeing as he doesn't want to be in therapy.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Rescue Me</span><br />Back in July I mentioned that though Janet will still be dating that Dwight dude when Rescue Me returns in Spring 2009, she and Tommy will end up in bed together this season anyway... no surprise. Perhaps a bit more unexpected? Tommy and Sheila will reignite their sexual relationship as well... and it won't be one-time thing.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Big Bang Theory</span><br />Turns out Penny may have an interest in scientists after all... ones with Nobel prizes, anyway.
