Electricity – Competitive Fixed Rates

Electricity – Floating Rates

City residents have many options when selecting an electricity provider for their home.

The City’s Economic Development Department has researched some of the different fixed and variable rate options offered in the area. These choices can provide savings of $20-50 per month for a resident using 600 KWh of electricity depending on the plan chosen. Although variable rates are typically lower than fixed price contracts, they offer no protection to spikes in market prices.

“This is good information to have,” says Mayor Dwight Logan, “typically we’re challenged with higher costs in the north so it’s encouraging to see that competition is bringing down costs in the area.”

The 2009 Residential Property Taxes & Utility Charges Survey showed Grande Prairie was in the middle of pack in terms of property taxes, but electricity costs were high.

The General Government Services Committee recommended last week that the City look into working with ATCO Electric to bring a Smart Metering pilot project to the Grande Prairie Area. Smart Metering is a way of further reducing costs by making consumers aware of their energy use during peak and non-peak hours which would allow residents to adjust their electricity rates accordingly.
