Jason and Ti wanted to head South to Club Caribbean Subdivision. We were going to check on a friends property located at the most Southern point of the Yucatan . The trip went well until we hit some washed out places in the road. We have had lots of rain,the town board has not gotten down there yet.Tommy you might want to drop them a line and see if they can take some stone down when it becomes available (Tommy your property looks great! Your trees are being well cared for, and it shows. Sorry Jason got those pics).
We were just sitting on Tommy s property enjoying the breeze and view. It was specially nice because Ti and Jason could imagine what they would do with their property.
Then a guy walks up and suggests we join him for a drink,that voice thought for a second then yelled "ROBERT".To my amazement my old friend is back in town,I didn't notice him with the beard. We immediately headed over to his Bar while trying to catch up on each others lives, navigating around Tommy 's palms. We were really happy to have a cold drink on this warm day.
We all huddled around the bar and chit chatted away. Robert assures me, he is here to stay.
Tina is having fun with the cameraRobert and Mango working the bar.It is nice to know after you navigate down South, there is a cold drink and a good friend .You cant miss them, they are at the very end of the island. People that own property down South should pay him a visit. Robert is a good friend to have, we are thrilled to have him back!
Most Southern Bar and Grill located at the tip of the Yucatan. The golf cart ride makes for a great adventure.Lots of people fish down there if your interested in fishing.Go down and see him,Robert is a fun guy.

No Electric

CFE UNABLE TO PROVIDE BEL
WITH FIRM ENERGY

Belize Electricity Limited says it is working to secure sufficient energy supply to meet the country’s peak demand of over 74 megawatts after the company received a notice from Comision Federal de Electricidad of Mexico that it will not be able to supply BEL with firm energy for the next four months beginning May 8.
BEL says during the dry season it purchases as much as 43 megawatts of firm capacity from CFE.
BEL says in its notice CFE explained that damage to major generating equipment in central Campeche following the total system outage yesterday has severely limited its capacity to provide firm energy to the Yucatan Peninsula which has forced that company to suspend the firm energy supplied to BEL. This damage was responsible for a national power outage in Belize.
BEL says it currently sources power from hydroelectricity, the West Lake Generating facility, diesel generating plants in Belmopan and Caye Caulker and from mobile units. BEL goes on to say that since hydroelectric production is less than it is in the rainy season, BEL will continue to use local generation sources efficiently to minimize possible power outages. BEL ends its release by encouraging customers to continue practicing energy conservation.
What the heck does this mean,cut us off in 5 Days.
This is what I woke up to on May 1st, (crap power just went out 3:26 afternoon). Upload now!
We get our power from Mexico, they can produce it cheaper. We actually have a power line that travels threw Belize, then to island under water to this location for disbursement. We used to generate our power hear on island with a huge generator, which is now out of commission.
The old days we could watch the voltage changes by looking at a light bulb. We used to joke about it all the time. when the power would go out my buddy Charlie from Estels would say" GREAT,look at the money we are saving ". Here in the Caribbean your sense of humor can be your most valuable asset.
Well I was not laughing when I heard the news. Immediately kicked into assessment mode, 5 days left. I started networking, fortunately we have a friend with in the company that gave us the poop- scoop. After the conversation we were relieved to find out they are not turning us off, completely. We still decided to upgrade our generator, these days it does n't matter where you live the states or here a generator is nice to have.
What happened was Belize had worked out a contract at a nice price for power from Mexico. I forget some of the terms, in a nut shell. They did not have a contract for FIRM power, they were selling us power from a hydro power which relies on mother nature like, wind . They had problems supplying power to their country during peak hours. They also burned up some of their equipment which now, needed replacing. They agreed to sell what they could .
Our electric infrastructure is basically new,but we were not generating power much anymore. My question was could Belize do it.? Could Belize generate power to supply threw out the country? We would not know until they threw the switch.
Having Mexico provide power is a great option.Living in small countries in the Caribbean struggle at times to provide consistent utilities. Mexico is a huge country and they had to make that great investment in power plants. They can produce it cheaper with a better consistency.
Living in St. Croix (U.S.V.I.) , you would think would be better, it wasn't. Outages were something we lived with,one every other week 4-6 hours, no warning . It is not easy to produce electricity effectively for a small Country like Belize or a island.Being next to Mexico has been a true blessing,I have not realized this till now. YES, Belize Electric did it, we can generate our own power if we ever need to for lengths of time. Little inconveniences considering, but; well worth that clean regulated voltage power. Please see note on fridge(off),we would use this to keep track. The power would go off in the morning((5 min) at 8 am (Which is 9 am Mexico) peak time. Belize would then switch to their gen. systems and run till 4pm our time (5pm Mexico time) then switch over again(5 min).
I am so happy we have good infrastructure,always thought we did.

Julian Rivero is the proud owner of CSM2000 .He just removed some data from a computer that retired early. Sometimes I am just blown away at the different services we have a available on island. We thought people should know that you can get supplies like ink, cables,and routers for computers and printers on island . If you buy something in the states make sure you can get parts and supplies on island .Don't get the latest and greatest if you can't get the parts. Example is Ink,we normally buy H.P. printers because it is easy to get ink for. Many people make this mistake and then have to rely on snail-mail.His prices are very good,we just bought a fax machine last minute. We were surprised at the inexpensive price, it was cheap. We called the mainland and found out we saved plenty .
Julian comes highly recommended, he has been a real key to keeping our business office running smooth(even if it takes him to 8pm).

"Island Life" and "Taco Girl" on the move

After a year "Island Life" has been having fun scratching the surface of Blogger and now we need to start moving up to word press.Our address will be changing soon, we have been working on this for over a month.Taco Girl is also working towards the move and we will post the move so everybody can change book marks,links,and feed readers at the same time.
Well "Taco Girl" and "Island Life" have worked hard and it would be in evitable we would be on our way up.We are in great company, just ask Coconut Leo!

We will miss Blogger,we know you have a few issues. That is not why we are going, its just time to move on. We will move same day as "Taco Girl" stay tuned.Foxy's eye is doing better, the infection came back for the second time.It may look like her rt eye is OK, its not. We immediately started medication again,the swelling has gone down.We would have been traveling to Belize City again seeing a eye specialist,she travels well . She fly's off my golf cart all the time, also a frequent flyer of Tropic.
The article I wrote "No Guts No Glory" was true story that took place 20 years go. My concern now is that someone with limited cash and education may show up. Time for me to elaborate so we are not having a fund raiser to send you home.
Please don't come with limited financial resources, it will take time to settle in.
Ideally you should be coming to check the island out. The island life is not for everyone and you don't want to find that out after you move.The healthiest way to move is by NOT burning those bridges at home, so you can go back .
Don't come here if your marriage is teetering, unless you really want a divorce!
Don't come here if you have alcohol or drug problem, you wont find it easy here.
Don't come here if you are running from your problems, or resentful of something back there. You can't run from problems,deal with it!
Don't come if your running from the Law,they will find you.Try Brazil
Please come if you have a income, Belize has a great Tax free Retirement program.
Please come if you like small communities and the outdoors, specially fishing and diving.
Please come if want a small business or do some volunteer work to keep busy.

No guts no glory,

It's been about 20 years since I moved to the Caribbean( St. Croix) and it seems like yesterday that my stomach was rumbling, with doubt, and fear of the unknown. Being young, the move was a huge leap for me, I did not have much of a safety net at the time. Five hundred bucks in my pocket and the determination to succeed was my only option.

I had only been on the island for 3 days when I found solid employment, soon after I found my ideal job.

After working on the island for two weeks, a friend asked me to look after their Estate. Hmmm let me think about it……YES.

Now lets recalculate

Great job, Swanky Pad, life was good. The owners came down once a year, on average, so the place was pretty much mine. Then I meet Texas Tina and that was THE absolute thrill of my life. We explored all the different islands, surf shacks, enjoyed Carnival, sail boat regatta’s and sailed around the West Indies. My dreams had come true.

One day I was lying by the pool reflecting, trying to figure out how this all happened. Was this luck, a fluke, or a well-deserved success?

Risk vs Reward

My relocation to the Virgin Islands was a calculated decision and paid very handsomely.

The “Pay off” was the lifestyle, not as much the money. People spend so much time chasing money, instead of their dreams. Really it is simple if you like what your doing and take pride in what you do, you will find a audience that appreciates your work ( = $).

Remember "No Guts, No Glory", you can't call yourself a investor if you’re afraid to pull the trigger. Do your homework, come down on a vacation /scouting mission and see how it goes. At the worst you will meet the most friendly people and experience the best fishing and diving in the world and possibly have a great vacation.

This trend has been going on for over 20 years strong, driven by lifestyle changes and technology. There are more people moving out of the U.S., Canada and Europe than ever before. You must have read about people moving to the Caribbean, maybe you have seen house hunters international. Regardless, you are watching a trend getting more popular and showing no signs of slowing down.

HEAD TO THE BEACH

Sunday 4:30 in the afternoon Tina and I were getting a little restless. We have been working on the Live feed Camera and it was frustrating .First computer conflicts and then glorious b.t.l. our dsl provider has been blinky on us . For the past 3 weeks people have been stopping me and asking if we have seen the Jam band on Sunday. Tina would not commit to going and I did buckle under repeated pressure (twist my arm). Zac was nice enough to ask us, we declined. We just had way to much work,Re biz is picking up. After a few conference calls and getting the camera up it was getting late, so I started getting ready before I missed the band. Last minute Tina decided to join me ,can't forget Foxy!
Place was packed, as we walked in we could hear the band jamming, music was fa nominal .It was so nice walking around the bend and seeing all our friends.Horseshoe tournament was very close the final game. These guys had a incredible game they were point for point.
Guess who won, Yup Frank! He is a real challenge to beat,his wife is a close second. If you come to Belize and think you can throw shoes,prove it! You can find Frank At Crazy Canucks on Sundays or try to catch him at Carona Del Mar after work(5pm). He is up for the challenge,my money of course is on Frank.
Melody wins award for the quickest painting! A buddy of mine picks out a painting and she painted it while we waited(2 hours). She has her studio now at Canuck's , she is also doing lessons, go on by and check her out. This piece will be hanging on John's wall after it is framed.

Yup dancing on stools,they are now spilling out on the beach dancing away. We were amazed at all the people, reminded us of the days Pineapple willy entertained us (6-7 yrs ago?).

Let me introduce you to the band from left to right.Drummer Dan, Derick on Bass, Gino Vocals and guitar And Ted on the keyboard. Zac stepped in on the drums, your welcome to bring your instrument and Jam. Bring your harmonica, cowbell, or wash board it does not matter.These guys would enjoy it, unless you really stink .But if you are not short of courage, do it! There has not been a band playing at Crazy Canucks on Sundays in moons, this is clearly the social event for Sunday.
We were asked (review) what we think so here it is! SPECTACULAR, event not to be missed!Your ears would not forgive you if you missed this show.
Back ground:Drummer Dan- played for the band Berlin. That was a all girl band back in the seventy's. Derick- on Bass, is still in high school and only plays on Sundays if he doesn't keep his grades up.Fortunately he is doing well in school so he can be seen playing on week nights. We expect a lot from our Belizean Buddy. Gino-on vocals and guitar man he is awesome .This guy can belt out some tunes,I came close to dancing several times, guess I was a quart low. Zac-on the Tom Toms, Zac is a professional drummer and kicks butt. Zac is a man of many trades, massage therapy,Private catering and teaches Tia-chi and yoga (604-7029). Just give him a call and he will come to you.Ted -missing from picture has been playing the keys forever,came from Canada and now resides here.He was a I.T. guy up there, now enjoying the island life.

Tina getting a good hand on Foxy,she is squirming in her arms trying to get the pizza. She is a handful not as Innocent as you would think,but ;she is our trouble maker. Although Pizza Dave makes the best pie (pepperoni's Pizza) ,ask anyone.
This has been the best Sunday I have had in a long ,long time. Here in the Caribbean, Sundays are a huge event.Normally everyone goes to the beach,or just chills out in general or cook out and just hang with friends.
Update on Foxy, her eye is much better from the infection. After jumping out of the cart on me weeks ago she has recovered from the cut lip and knock in the head. I however am still recovering from the tongue lashing.

I just wanted to let everyone know that my dad has changed address. This post is in memory of him

For the first time in the lives of those that have been touched by my dad, you will celebrate Father's Day, Christmas, and every other special day from here on without him. There is much to remember and much to be thankful for as we remember him and the way he shared his life with those around him. Each of us gives gifts of our self to those we share life with. These are gifts that no one can take away. Though we are gone, these gifts remain with those to whom we have given them. My dad was a person of devotion and integrity. He was a simple man of few words. He loved telling jokes. He loved to make people laugh and he loved to play music.His music will play on in different ways for different people.

Born 1938 in Ireland Texas

My dad moved to Waco after the first grade, graduated from Waco High in 1957.

Started working for Neil Koos, county surveyor, in 1958. He took over as county surveyor in 1979 and retired in 1988. He loved music and played guitar from age 11. He played music around Waco for years. His music will always play in our hearts.

Survived by: His two sons L.T. and Jimmy.

His two daughters Tina and Teresa

Wife Marian and her 6 children: There are many grand children and several great grand children.

It has been said that the loss of a parent is one of life's most traumatic events. At this time it may not be any easier on anyone that knows and loves him. I have been told that, in time, the hurt will fade, only to be replaced by positive memories that soothe the soul.

My dad gave gifts of himself to us which have become a part of us, and cannot be taken away. We give thanks for his life, and for the ways he shared it with us. He is our hero and he will always be remembered.

My dad was my hero and no words can express the pain I am feeling. I will miss him dearly and he will be in my heart forever. I see him every time I look in the mirror, and hear him when the wind blows. Every morning I look up at the sky and say, "hello dad". Each night I look at the stars and tell him, "good night, I love you and miss you".
My dad has been writing music since I was a little girl. I know I will never hear him play guitar or sing again, but his songs, I hope, I never forget.

This is one of my favorite golf carts,specially like the tail gate. Looks like my friend got a flat tire,happens. This will cost about $ 7.50 U.S to have it patched. We normally keep a spare around if we can help it. I guess now with the streets being cobble stoned we are all seeing less repairs.
Years ago, during rainy seasons we would have flooded pothole roads that you could not ride a bike down. The pot holes were big and deep and everywhere. There is not a picture of the moon that looked any worse. In those days it was hard to get your cart in and out of the busy mechanic shops, after they were beaten so bad.
Casey and I sat at BC's debating what would last longer a four wheeler or a Mule. He choose the Mule because it had a flat bed. I don't think he got 3 years out of that thing.I know he was always looking for parts mechanical and body. That was a very holy vehicle, the salt air, water and the craters, huh. Its best to switch to another topic, my back is killing me just thinking about it !!ya just wouldn't believe

Looks like we have a 4 sale by owner in San Pablo subdivision. This is a great neighborhood with electric, water, cable, dsl, telephone and trash p/up. The lot size is approximately 50X75 feet and should sell for about 50k U.S dollars. Based on comps in the area .

Tropic Air should be done by the middle or end of May. The guys are working hard to finish up before the end of may. A punch out list here in Belize is a matter of when you give up and are just happy to finish, the noise, people and $$. Building is just tiring and expensive, here there everywhere in the world ,not just here. We had a great builder for the house, a engineer and designer and we still have a couple flaws that are just not worth going back.That's why I always tend to overkill on my projects, as long as it is strong I am satisfied. Tina its all about esthetics's, she typically gets last call. To save myself the time I would always tell the builder go to Tina first. The crew never listened very well , would come back to me. Normally we would talk it out and do exactly what Tina had asked.Finally towards the end Tina could give them direct orders.They don't really feel comfortable taking advice from women in construction. In Latin America you will see that often ,very common, we respect,embrace the culture.
You better bring a sense of humor and a whole lot of patience and a little bit of compassion to start, if you plan on moving here .
Tina really impressed the guys,she sat for weekends working on the hard wood ceiling and floors. She would pick each piece one by one, color by color(5 different woods). Free Tip: when building with local woods ,specially finish wood order way in advance so you can dry out the wood. Otherwise the wood will shrink and you will begin to see day light. Ask a good cabinet man for advice on where to buy and how to store and dry out. Tip # 2 You can find some incredible tiles in Mexico. We found nice porcelain,can't say enough about them.We were lucky our builder has worked with the tiles before. They are not the same size, you have to be careful when you are laying them.Well lucky us, had no idea some things work themselves out. Figured we deserved a break from all the other challenges incurred during building. We are very, very happy and still have our marriage.I think?

Craig and Trish flew down to see if they could live here before they would consider a purchase.
Tina and I decided to take them around the island,they needed a better feel for living in each particular area.The building cost vary quite a lot from one area to another.

Craig and Trish from Texas came down to scope things out.The stress was really eating away searching for the right piece of paradise. Its really nice when people come here and support our little island. You guys brought scissors and glue sticks and notebooks,construction paper.Special thank you from the kids at the R.C. School, next time stop by they said. The supplies you brought was what they needed for their arts and crafts, for now they will share the supplies between classrooms.
We are hoping we might have more people with light suitcases coming soon. The R.C. School is still desperate for supplies for the kids,call or e-mail if I can help.

School supplies for R.C. school !

The Roman Catholic School need our help, now.Friends of ours e-mailed, and asked a tough question. "Tim ,Tina we are coming to stay at our Condo. What should we bring to donate, and to who?" That was a toughest question for me to answer,at the time.
I started calling around to the various organizations and was quite disturbed to find out the desperate shape our primary school is in for supplies, funds and volunteers (teachers).
We had the privilege to be introduced to Mrs. Kay the Principal and Miss Paula.We had to wait a few minutes, children were in the Principals office (reminded me of the old days), because of being out of school .
We entered her office after and found out the kids were not coming to school ,because ;they had no supplies. Pencil ,paper and a ruler,I was ill. How could one school on the other side of the island have computers and this school needs these basics.Tina and I are aware of the Calender Girls ,which have been doing a terrific job of raising funds and allocating them to build more class rooms.We decided then, and there ;we would try to give these children some help.We will work beside the Calender Girls and Miss Kay, so we don't step on any toes. Mrs. Eva (Calender Girls) has worked this hard and knows the needs better than us. Our goal is to set up a web site with a wish list and some updated photos. This will take some time, for now I can forward your information for those that can make a difference.

Mrs. Paula says these are composition books (see pic below), they come large and small and they could use both. They have a hard cover and the pages are blank. If you cant find that type get any type of notebooks, with blank pages will due fine. Normally you can find these at the dollar store. They also need flash cards, rulers, pencils, chalk and other school basics for teachers and students. Anyone that would be interested in volunteering to be a teacher or substitute would be warmly welcomed.P.S. Leashes were for SagaThanks in advance for supplies brought in your suitcase.Together we make a better San Pedro!! Again ,special thanks to our friends From Michigan.If it was not for them we would not have seen this extremely needed cause at this particular time. We will continue to dedicate our resources to this school.

This has to be the coolest ice cream man

Here is a self made businessman. He doesn't need a truck or a flashing light. I have not personally met him, yet. Picture this guy driving down the street with a loud musical horn. You can see him or a associate of his cruising around town and some of the town neighborhoods.

SAGA

SAGA needs an isolation unit to prevent the transmission of infectious disease in their kennel and clinic.

We have been given a stall to raise money for SAGA isolation unit project by the San Pedro Business Association for the up coming Food Festival, which will be held on Saturday the 31st from 5:00 - 11:00pm.

We will be having a cake stand, with a wide variety of delicious cakes, cupcakes, brownies etc. We are excited that Island Perk is supporting us and our stand will be close by so that everyone can enjoy a scrumptious coffee and cake.

If you would like to make a cake or some other yummy treat to donate to the cake stand, we would be ever so grateful.
