Libertad is the Spanish word for Freedom.

In 1982, the Mexican Mint started to produce the Mexican Silver Libertad 1 Onza Bullion Coin for investors and collectors.

From 1982 to 1996, the Mexican Silver Libertad Onza portraited the same design as the Centanario “Winged Victory” Angel design taken from Mexico’s 50-peso gold bullion coin.

Mexican Libertad Silver Coin Malaysia

New Design

In 1996, the Silver Libertad Bullion Coins changed the reverse side of the coin to the current “Winged Victory” design.

The Angel of Independence

El Ángel de la Independencia or The Angel of Independence design on the Mexican silver bullion coin represents the famous statue of Winged Victory.

The famous Mexican statue is located on a roundabout in the Paseo de la Reforma in downtown Mexico City.

The Angel of Independence is depicted as flying atop a victory column know as the “Independence Column or Columna de la Independencia.”

“El Angel”, as the statue is commonly known, holds in her right hand a laurel crown, symbolizing Victory, while in her left hand she holds a broken chain, symbolizing Freedom.

El Angel was built in 1910, to commemorate the Centennial of the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence.

The Statue is made of solid bronze and covered in 24k gold, it weighs 7 tons.

The Angel of Independence is one of Mexico City’s most recognizable landmarks.

Mexican Libertad Obverse Silver Coin Malaysia

Obverse

The Center of the silver bullion coin features the National Coat of Arms of Mexico.

The coat of arms depicts a Mexican Golden Eagle perched upon a cactus with a snake in its beak.

It symbolizes Tenochtitian, the Aztec Capital, now Mexico City

Below the Eagle is a wreath, half made of oak leaves the other half made of laurel leaves.

Surrounding the Coat of Arms are the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” (The Official Name for Mexico in Spanish)

Encircling, Outside of the Mexican Coat of Arms are the reproductions of various Coat of Arms used throughout Mexico’s history.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1 oz. Mexican Silver Libertad bullion coin features the “Winged Victory” angel design.

The angel is depicted as towering above volcanic mountain peeks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl.

The volcanic peaks memorialize the legend of two lovers for whom they were named.

Inscribed along the top of the 1 oz. Silver Libertad bullion coin is “1 ONZA” (one ounce), “PLATA PURA” (pure silver).

The year of issue is also inscribed along the top of the coin, along with the word “Ley” (pure) “.999” representing the silver purity of the coin.

The Mint Mark of the Mexican Mint is inscribed to the left of the Winged Angel through the symbol of the “M” under a “O.”

The Mexican silver bullion coins do not have a face value.

We have heard recently that there were many offloading of Silver ETFs. What is these Silver ETFs? Why dothey have such impact on the Silver Spot price? Let’s examine it together.

ETF = May Not Be Physical Silver

According to Wikipedia: Silver exchange-traded products are exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded notes (ETNs) and closed-end funds (CEFs) that aim to track the price of silver. Silverexchange-traded products are traded on the major stock exchanges including the London and New York Stock Exchanges. The U.S Geological Survey cites the emergence of silver ETFs as a significant factor in the 2007-2011 price rise of silver. As of September 2011, the largest of these funds holds the equivalent of over one third of the world’s total annual silver production.

Essentially, ETFs are no different from FIAT currency or the stock market, they are electronic money. Such instruments do not necessarily hold physical Silver.

Q: Advisors frequently tell us not to be invested in gold/silver exchange traded funds (ETFs) as they could collapse and leave the investor with nothing but paper. Can that happen when one is invested in ETFs which are backed 98% by gold and/or silver bullion, such as the Sprott Physical Gold and Silver funds)? ~ Virginia R.

A: As long as ETFs are holding physical gold or silver, and essentially issuing certificates of pro-rata ownership in the form of stock, then there’s nothing to worry about in terms of them collapsing. That’s because the metal is there. Exchange traded notes (ETNs), however, are another matter. The structure of ETNs is complicated, and theoretically they are a much dicier proposition. When I look at an ETN, I look primarily at the “credit” and reputation of who is backing it. – Money Morning – http://moneymorning.com/2013/04/05/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-wall-street-and-werent-afraid-to-ask/

Sunshine Minting Inc. (SMI) taken a booth to showcase their latest Mint Mark SI security feature, that requires a special decoder to read the security image. However, they are not selling anything during the fair.

We had a chance to speak to Mr Tom Hallenbeck, President of American Numismatic Association (ANA) (www.money.org). He shared that ANA is now in the midst of revamping their website to provide more information to attract the younger demographic. He noted that it is welcoming to see a mixed crowd at this fair, young and old. When asked on the counterfeiting products in the market, he simply quash the topic. He added this is not something new, counterfeit has been since the beginning of time. His advise is to join a local club, or read and get educated on how to spot the fake. Wise words indeed.

They are many Singapore based bullion seller in the fair. And there are even more big and small enterprise, trading on collectors coins and notes. They come from Malaysia, Singapore, US, China and even Middle East.

It must be said that the lack of Major National Mint’s participation has dampen the quality of the fair. Local host Singapore Mint and Israel Mint. The half is Monnaie de Paris (www.monnaiedeparis.fr), who was there only to give out brochures, without exhibits.

Recent headlines are mainly focused on the potential bailout plan in the Republic of Cyprus, a member state of the European Union. Over 7o% of its 1.1million population is ethnic Greek, maybe that is the reason so often mistaken to be part of another country in financial crisis, Greece.

“The entwinement of Cyprus and Russia, the world’s ninth-biggest economy, makes things complicated. Russia’s banks and companies have $31 billion parked in Cypriot banks, according to estimates by Moody’s Investor Services” – Bloombarg Businessweek

The €10 billion bailout package by EU includes a tax on cash in the local banks, affecting both local residents and foreign companies that engage loans and cash deposits. This forced the Cyprus Government to declare ‘bank holiday’ until Thursday. The speaker of the Cyprus Government confirmed that a seating on Thursday is scheduled to discuss on the bailout proposal. This had caused residents to make a beeline to the ATM (teller machines) to withdraw as much cash as possible, prior the announcement. This is what we term as ‘bank run‘.

^ Rush to withdraw cash seen during the recent Lahad Datu Army Deployment two weeks ago

The plan of the bailout is not straightforward as previous bailouts, this time as proposal to tax current depositors in bank as much as 9.9% for balances over €100,000. Some rumour speculate it to be 15% for over €500,000. This sparked outrages within people in Cyprus, Europe and surprisingly Russians.

“Almost €6 billion of the savings for taxpayers in euro-zone countries came from losses imposed on depositors in Cyprus’s outsize banks. A one-off 9.9% levy will be imposed on all deposits over the insurance threshold of €100,000 before banks reopen after a bank holiday on Monday.” – The Economist

“Cypriot banks took in billions of euros in deposits, including from Russian oligarchs who’ve set up business on the Mediterranean island nation. Naturally, they had to put all that money to work somewhere. Reaching for attractive returns, they invested depositors’ money heavily in Greek loans and bonds—and took a beating when Greece’s economy skidded.”

– Bloomberg Businessweek –

Bailout or bankruptcy?

Without financial support from somewhere, Cyprus will be unable to meet its financial commitments. Why? The country’s outsized banks have been crippled by losses on Greek debt, and it can’t afford to bail them out on its own.

The country’s debt-to-GDP ratio, currently around 87%, is on course to soar to an unsustainable 140% without a bailout. A messy default could lead to exit from the eurozone and revive fears about the viability of the currency area.

“A disorderly bankruptcy would have forced us to leave the euro and forced a devaluation,” Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said Sunday. – CNNMoney

Stay tuned.

We are moving towards a new world of touch screen. Fujifilm, a name which does not require any further introduction is now venturing into producing silver based touch screen for computers. Apples has been marketing devices with touch screen feature since 2007. PC makers such as DELL, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and ACERS are joining the bandwagon now with the recent introduction of Windows 8.

Currently, touch screen relies on indium tin oxide, a costly rare material mined as a Zinc by-product. Silver poised a good possibility as a replacement. With years of experience in dealing with silver photographic film technology, Fujifilm are now all out to harnesh the new potential of silver. Fujifilm hopes to use its long history with silver to bring down the cost of these displays and grab a piece of the quickly expanding touch screen market.

Fujifilm Touch Screen Poised to Aid Microsoft Vs. Apple (Mar 11, 2013)

Fujifilm Holdings Corp. (4901), a company better known for cameras and film, could help Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and the personal-computer industry fight back against Apple Inc. (AAPL)

Fujifilm is using its experience with silver to create bigger and more affordable touch-screen displays. Laptops and desktops sporting large touch-responsive panels are costly to produce because the sensors are made of a rare and brittle material called indium tin oxide, or ITO.
Enlarge image Fujifilm Touch Screen Poised to Aid Microsoft Versus Apple

Fujifilm and other companies, including Atmel Corp. (ATML) and Uni-Pixel Inc. (UNXL), are working on new, less expensive approaches that rely on different metals to help the industry lessen its dependence on ITO and overcome one of the biggest obstacles to adding touch to PC screens. Just 13 percent of notebooks this year will feature touch, underscoring the challenge facing Microsoft and PC makers such as Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and Dell Inc. (DELL) as they try to mount a credible threat to Apple, which has been selling touch-screen devices since 2007.

“The entire industry has been looking for a replacement for ITO for years,” Cody Acree, an analyst at Williams Financial Group Inc. in Dallas, said in an interview.

Putting touch in 23-inch to 27-inch displays used in all- in-one desktop designs adds as much as $180 to the cost, according to Acree. For smaller computers and tablets, with up to 11.6-inch screens, it adds about $45, he estimates.

Microsoft’s Windows 8, the first of its flagship operating systems designed around touch technology, went on sale in October. The new devices met with tepid demand amid economic weakness, high prices and the lack of the touch-screen feature available in other gadgets. PC sales will decline 1.3 percent this year after falling 3.7 percent last year, according to IDC.
Touch-Enabled PCs

“We saw ramp-up challenges as the ecosystem learned to scale to new screen sizes and a wide variety of devices,” said Mark Martin, a spokesman for Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft. “Launch was just the beginning. Touch drives user engagement and is rapidly becoming a must-have capability.”

Martin declined to discuss Microsoft’s suppliers or say whether the company plans to purchase touch-screen technology from Fujifilm. The Japanese company isn’t listed among Microsoft’s suppliers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Still, Tokyo-based Fujifilm is taking advantage of its photographic film technology as it seeks to meet demand. The company uses a material called silver halide to create sensor meshes in grids of almost invisible fine wires to detect touch, Keiji Uchiyama, a technical manager at Fujifilm’s Substrate Solution Group, said in an interview.
New Generation

“Set makers are concerned about the shortage of touch- screen film supplies and about relying on ITO technology,” Uchiyama said. “The supply shortage became more apparent in the fall and we started to get a much stronger response to our product.”

Founded as Fuji Photo Film Co. in 1934, Fujifilm grew into a global supplier of photographic film for cameras, cinema and medical equipment. While Fujifilm successfully navigated the transition a decade ago from analog to digital photography, the recent proliferation of smartphones equipped with high- resolution cameras has prompted it and other digital-camera manufacturers to seek new growth areas.

While Nikon Corp. (7731) and Ricoh Co. (7752), which have branched out beyond cameras, are valued by investors at 21 times projected profit for the current fiscal year. Fujifilm, which is pursuing growth in businesses including multi-function printers, medical equipment and liquid-crystal display materials, has a price-to- earnings ratio of 18.

Fujifilm shares rose 0.6 percent to 1,827 yen at the close of trade in Tokyo today.

Consumers are growing familiar with touch-enabled devices, and they’re increasingly demanding the capability when shopping for a PC, Acree said.

“You have an entire generation that is starting out with touch smartphones and tablets,” he said.
Flexible Displays

Just 2.5 percent of notebooks sold last year were touch- enabled, and that figure that will rise to only 13.1 percent this year, even with the introduction of Windows 8, NPD DisplaySearch predicts.

“Consumers don’t see why they should pay a premium for a feature that’s already part of their smartphones and tablets,” said Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

Almost all of the screens in iPhones, iPads and touch- enabled devices use ITO, a byproduct of zinc production. A so- called rare-earth material, most of ITO comes from China.

Japan’s Nitto Denko Corp. (6988) is the biggest maker of ITO-based touch sensors, and counts Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple among its top customers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Kazuhito Kouno, a spokesman at Osaka, Japan-based Nitto Denko, declined to comment.

Atmel, based in San Jose, California, is already shipping the new sensors for use in an Asustek Computer Inc. (2357) tablet, according to Brett Gaines, senior director for business development of Atmel’s XSense business.
Cost Challenge

In addition to being cheaper and giving more accurate readings of where a device is being touched, copper-based technology opens the door to curved and even flexible displays. Unlike screens with ITO, which breaks easily, metal-based panels can bend, Gaines said. Samsung Electronics and Apple, which together supply more than half of the smartphone market, dominate demand for ITO supply, soaking up more than half of the industry’s output, he said.

“There clearly is a drive, especially in larger screens, to find a replacement to ITO,” said Gaines. “Cost is one of those reasons. PC players are seeing that touch is a driver, especially in the face the onslaught of tablets.”

Uni-Pixel has created a process that prints and plates a copper grid onto rolls of plastic, avoiding the multistep semiconductor-type manufacturing for ITO-based touch screens.
Dell Deal

Based in Woodlands, Texas, Uni-Pixel, which has never posted more than $200,000 in quarterly revenue, believes it has a chance to help the $223.3 billion PC industry directly by entering production, even though it has fewer than 50 employees, according to Chief Executive Officer Reed Killion.

Uni-Pixel shares have almost tripled since Dec. 7, when it announced it had signed up a large PC maker. The company is being paid cash upfront to set up dedicated production lines. Dell is the company working with Uni-Pixel, according to Acree.

Ellen Murphy, a spokeswoman for Dell, declined to comment.

“One of the advantages we’ve had is that we’ve gone relatively unnoticed,” Killion said. “Nobody thought 20 guys and mule in Texas could deliver to scale.”

No one logically expected United States Mint bullion sales in February to surpass those from January. The start of a year tends to be a superb time for American Eagles since that is when newly dated coins debut. It is the year-over-year totals that impress, especially for silver bullion, as shown in the following table.

The previous high was in Feb 2011 with 3,240,000 oz of ASE sold. This year’s is all time high of 3,368,500 oz.

2013 American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins

U.S. Mint American Eagle silver coins notched strong sales even as buyers were limited in how many they could order. With initial Silver Eagle supplies sold out for a time in January, the U.S. Mint continues to ration dealer buying while it rebuilds inventory.

February sales of bullion Silver Eagles hit 3,358,500 coins, which was down more than half from January’s all-time monthly sales record of 7,498,000. Yet, the level is more than double the sales of 1,490,000 from February of last year. The series of 99.9% pure silver coins launched in 1986. Last month was the strongest February on the books.
