The history of Murano glass dates back to the late 13th century when Venetian authorities ordered the city’s glassmakers to relocate their workshops to the nearby island of Murano. Before becoming a fully-fledged glassmaker, you cannot practice your craft in Venice; all glass furnaces are allowed only on the islands of Murano. Once there, you can never relocate. For many, this is interpreted as a permanent exile. In exchange, you are given privileged status in Venetian society, and your family enjoys many privileges.

Types of Bedroom Lighting

Bedroom lighting requires the type of flexibility that is energizing in the morning and calming at night, with task lighting for reading or around the mirror. Recessed down lights mounted on the tray ceiling right above the bed, supplement a pair of table lamps for bedside reading, and indirect lighting on the ceiling provides mood lighting. Many bedrooms and bedroom closets do not have any ceiling fixtures and must rely on lamps alone. One outlet is usually connected to the switch. So someone entering the room can immediately turn on a light. If this is the case in your bedroom, position enough lamps to light the room evenly.

Bedrooms need comfortable general lighting with appropriate task lights for reading, grooming, deskwork, and other activities. Direct lighting is also helpful in the bedroom when placed over chest of drawers, in closets, close to seating, and over beds. Dim circulation lighting for safety at night is a basic requirement. Accent lighting can be effectively used to focus on a painting or wall unit.

General Lighting

General lighting is somewhat less important in the bedroom than in other areas of the home. Task Lighting

Reading or applying makeup requires specific lighting. Remember, closets are small rooms, just as important as the rooms that are seen by guests.

In Zen consciousness, small spaces are equal in significance to big spaces. What is seen and unseen are one. You experience your bedroom closet and storage every day, so why not put some flair into these areas? Bedroom closet need not be boring or unremarkable. Think of your bedroom closet as a secret treasure chest.

A considerable amount of closet space is one of the bedroom basics. The challenge is always to make your bedroom as beautiful as you can make it, and not have your storage needs impinge on the life-force and harmony of your master bedroom design.

Each individual has a different tolerance level for disorder, and the better your relationship with your bedroom closet and storage, the cozier your bedroom will feel. You can pretend that you are a boat builder and learn to utilize every nook and cranny of the space.

Private Haven in the Bedroom Closet

Bedrooms can become more heavenly when you maximize the use of your closet space, allowing for more “lightness of being”. Better to store as many clothes as possible in your closet than to have an extra chest of drawers taking up space and weighing down a room. If you have a shortage of built-in drawers in your bedroom closet, consider using hat boxes stacked in the closet to hold stockings, socks, and underwear.

Take advantage of the ceiling height and consider having two rows of hanging clothes, one on top of the other. You will probably need a pole notched to hook the hangers purchased at a house-wares store to retrieve the clothes hanging from the higher rod, but this minor inconvenience is well worth the extra space. Keep an attractive solid wooden footstool in every closet to reach the higher shelves, otherwise, you will risk bringing the entire contents down on your head when you only want to retrieve a sweater. If you keep your hanging items on one side of your closet, you can use the opposite wall for shelves and a series of drawers with a recessed space to grip them so there’s no need for protruding hardware.

You can turn your average-sized bedroom closet into a private haven. To achieve this feeling, you can install a mirror down one whole side and along a ledge. Mirrors always give an illusion of more space. By graduating the built-in drawers to allow the drawers you encounter as you first enter to be narrower than the drawers further in, they are not as bulky in the space. You can have a carpenter to build the units, but you can purchase them ready-made in different depths. You can install adjustable Lucite shelves inside each cubby so you will see more of what’s on the high shelves as well as to create a more open feeling.

While you may find shoe boxes ideal for other storage, it is more convenient to keep shoes in clear plastic boxes stacked in the closet so you can find them easily as you get dressed. Organize them by color so you don’t waste time searching for the appropriate pair. Men usually prefer simple open shelves for shoes. Shelves that project from the wall at a downward angle are too fussy.

If you have inadequate closet space, create your own. Some people use portable racks on wheels bought inexpensively at hardware stores. You can buy separate standing storage units, great for a kitchen or in a sitting room, to store a television or stereo. The practical everyday stuff of life in this small room makes it no longer just a storage closet, but also a warm and happy space.

Cleaning The Closet

How often have you wished you had more closet space in your bedroom? If you feel you are at the end of your rope with clutter, don’t jump to the conclusion that the only answer is additional space. Start by maximizing what you already have by weeding out any clothing and accessories you no longer need and donating them to your local Salvation Army or church. An uncluttered closet looks larger, and donated clothes provide welcome tax deductions. Mood Creating Aspects of Lighting

Skillful application of lighting can, more than any other element in the architectural environment, affect the experience of the viewer. Light is an element of design which should be used not only for visual comfort but also to achieve predetermined emotional responses from the lighted environment.Mood lighting is a useful tool to achieve the right level of visual comfort.

Through the use of lighting patterns of varying levels of illumination, and of color in the light source and the illuminated object, it is possible to produce certain moods such as solemnity, restfulness, gaiety, activity, warmth, and coolness. The lamps themselves can be used to dramatize elements of interior design-line, form, color, pattern, and texture.

Higher levels of lighting generally produce cheerful effects and stimulate people to alertness and activity, whereas lower levels tend to create an atmosphere of relaxation, intimacy, and restfulness.

Lighting also can be “soft” or “hard.” Soft lighting is diffused light that minimizes harsh shadows and provides a more relaxing and less visually compelling atmosphere. Too much diffused lighting lacks in interest and can make a room dull looking. Careful use of “hard” or direct lighting can provide highlights and shadows, model form, and emphasize texture. Usually, direct lighting is not used as a primary source of illumination, but rather as a supplement. The shine of metal, reflections of crystal, rich texture of other materials, create a sense of aliveness in an environment.

Creating an Atmosphere

Colored lighting can enhance an atmosphere. Certainly color lights are heavily used in stage sets to create moods. In a home, however, they should be applied with much restraint, and be much less intense or saturated. When overdone, colored lights destroy the appearance of materials and people’s coloring. A case in point: rosy-tinted lamps can flatter, but red lights wash out the redness of lips and cheeks and undo the flattering effect, as can be noted in some nightclubs.

To design a more solemn atmosphere, try using subdued patterns of light but do emphasize dramatic points in the room to avoid a monotonous effect. Use color sparingly.

To achieve a restful effect, use low brightness patterns, no visible light sources, subdued color, dark upper ceiling, low wall brightness. By way of contrast, to develop a sense of alertness and activity, employ high levels of illumination with lighting focused over specific tasks or areas.

For imparting a sense of warmth, use colors at the red end of the spectrum: pink, orange, amber, yellow. And for coolness, use colors at the cool end such as violet, blue, and green. Be aware that blue, blue-green and green detract from the human complexion and, when used indiscriminately, produce ghastly effects.

For a mood of gaiety, utilize higher levels of illumination, perhaps with kinetic lighting elements. Positioning lighting fixtures so that rhythms are created by light and shadow, reflections and diffusions, can impart an active dynamic effect to the atmosphere.

One cannot, when dealing with light and thinking about the mood effects of light, discount its relationship to color. Light and color are basic human needs. Both are necessary for sound mental health. Deprivation can be harmful.

Producing a Mood with Lighting

Light also is life-giving basic energy for any organic existence. And it affects the rhythmic processes of life; our biological clocks. Man has evolved to perform under eight hours of daylight and sixteen hours of incidental light and near-darkness.

So the room to which we retire, be it a bedroom or living room, should have built into the lamp designs lights that emit low levels of illumination. This produces a quiet mood. One extreme experience comes to mind. After leaving the clattering, noisy subway and passing through a doorway that leads directly from the subway to Rockefeller Center, one enters a black marble area where there is dim lighting.

The immediate effect is startling because people tend to suddenly lower their voices to a whisper after competing at shouting levels a moment before. This effect was designed into the environment through the mood created by light and color that induces a hushed, quiet atmosphere.

By way of contrast, to develop a celebrating mood, or a sunny, joyous mood, the sparkle of reflections from objects and bright lights helps to make light of an environment. On the other hand, for a romantic environment, one would employ low levels of lights, tinted on the warm side so that light flatters as it modulates our face and form, much like the feeling one gets when entering a candle lighted room.

The positioning of lights affects the modeling of forms. Side lighting intensifies modeling; front lighting flattens it. Light affects not only the surface and structure but the ambiance.
