Paul Kennedy is the editor in chief and general manager of Soccer America magazine, where he directs coverage of college soccer, international soccer and professional soccer. Kennedy has been in his current position since 1985. Previously, he worked as a correspondent for French magazine France Football. He has served as managing editor at Berling Communications Inc.

Tom Fontaine – KILT-FM

Tom Fontaine is a weekend on-air personality on KILT, the CBS Radio affiliate in Houston. In addition to hosting weekends, Fontaine is also a fill-in host for the station. He started his career at KILT in 1990 answering the phone on the “Bob Stephenson Outdoors Show.” In the years since, he has worked on promotions, swing-shifts and over nights. Fontaine is also very involved in the Houston community. He has hosted the Children’s Miracle Network telethon on Channel 11 and helped numerous other charities in their fundraising endeavors.

Cultivating the earth globally in June

What: Certain activities go hand in hand with summer time: swimming, hiking, playing outside and BBQs. At times, it is easy to forget the playground Earth provides. On June 5, celebrate the environment on World Environment Day.

Background: Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5 in an effort to encourage positive, global environmental action. Every year, a different city hosts the event with a different theme, with this year’s focus centered on food waste. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, 30 percent of all food is thrown away each year in the United States alone.

Story Pitch: A number of groups and organizations can pitch around World Environment Day, including restaurants and take-out establishments, which can promote the benefits of small portion plates or boxing up leftovers instead of wasting them. Food kitchens and hunger awareness groups can promote need for volunteers and donations. Generally, environmental groups and organizations will want to promote environmental action and sustainable growth.

Story Hook: The United Nations Environment Programme reported that roughly one-third of food produced in the world, approximately 1.2 billion tons, is lost or wasted each year. Consider the following when making your pitch:

What are some ways to cut back on food waste?
What options are available for leftover food from parties, lunches and dinners?
How can restaurants and food establishments prevent food waste?
How does wasting food directly impact the state of the global environment?

Tips: A person who works in the food industry and witnesses how much is discarded would make a good source. In addition, families who pack lunches and minimize waste may have good tips on how to successfully conserve food.

Bonnier Corporation sells more magazines

Meredith Corporation has bought Parenting, Baby Talk and Conceive from Bonnier Corporation and is folding the magazines’ print versions in September. Prior to the sale, 10 to 15 percent of the magazines’ staff will be offered other positions at Bonnier. Once the print publications have ceased, subscribers to these magazines will be transferred to Meredith’s Parents and American Baby.

New morning show at KBFF-FM in Portland

Alpha Broadcasting’s KBFF has launched a new morning show called “The Morning Mess.” Hosts Mike Edwards and Tanya Brown come from their latest gig as morning show hosts for WSSX-FM in Charleston, S.C. They join KBFF’s current morning host Nikki West from 5 to 10 a.m. on weekdays.

KBFF-FM is a Hot Adult Contemporary station serving the Portland, Ore., area.

Lindsay Shively has been named an anchor for “41 Action News Weekend Today” at KSHB. She has been reporting for the station since 2009. Prior to joining KSHB, she was an anchor and reporter for WIBW-TV (CBS) in Topeka, Kan. Anchor Cynthia Newsome is also changing roles at the station, moving from the weekend evening newscast to “41 Action News Midday” on weekdays. She has been with the station since 1997, and she has served as an anchor and reporter for KWTV-TV (CBS) in Oklahoma City prior to KSHB.
