According to a research note from NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, it seems that Apple is ramping up production and is working on the second-generation iPad mini with a Retina display that is slated for mass production in summer:

We should see the start of mass production of the panels in June or July.

However, don’t fret. Yesterday, Shim predicted that Apple would be beginning preparations to release an iPad mini during the second half of 2013, with another iPad mini during the Q1 of 2014, which is kind of what they did with the iPad 3-to-4th generation last year.

LG Display is said to be the main manufacturer of the displays for the iPad mini, as per usual. It’s also said that any type of Samsung manufacturing has been ceased altogether, stating Samsung is no longer a supplier:

Samsung is currently not in the iPad mini and they won’t be in the next generation. LGD is becoming a much bigger supplier than before.

As we all know, Apple and Samsung have not been pals lately, as Apple will hope to end all current manufacturing with relations with Samsung by the end of this year. Chinese-based TSMC will play the role to produce Apple’s processors.

However, the iPad mini with the retina display will be here soon, and will contain a resolution of 2048 x 1536-pixels. source

Apple has just seeded iOS 6.1.4 to everyone, and it seems that it will be addressing a speaker issue that is in the iPhone 5. So it seems to update a small audio profile in order to fix the speaker’s clarity.

It can be downloaded via OTA, and it’s only 11MB, and seems to be specifically for iPhone 5 users. Of course, you’ll want to stay away from this if you jailbreak. Apple patched some evasi0n exploits in iOS 6.1.3, so if you want to jailbreak, this won’t help you out.

If you’d like to download iOS 6.1.4 directly, here are the links for:

iPhone5,1: 6.1.4 (10B350)
iPhone 5,2: 6.1.4 (10B350)

Other than the small profile, there seems to be no noticeable differences in this firmware.

So far we’ve heard that Apple and Jony Ive have been hard at work completely redesigning and developing the next iteration of iPhone software, iOS 7. However, it wasn’t that long ago that we’ve heard Apple was borrowing engineers from OS X 10.9 to help with the completion of iOS 7. Today, AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski is claiming that Apple is continuing to borrow engineers in an effort to avoid any type of release delay, and to at least finalize the first beta build of iOS 7:

Sources who declined to be named because they are forbidden to talk publicly about Apple’s plans tellAllThingsD that the company has been “borrowing” engineers from the OS X 10.9 team as part of an effort to double down on iOS 7.

Don’t panic however, Paczkowski assures us that his source says it will be releasing on schedule, and it’s likely just taking a little extra time than predicted to complete this overhaul. It’s worth noting that Paczkowski has been accurate with Apple predictions, citing reputable sources, in the past. Bloomberg backs the overhaul with their report earlier today, stating iOS 7 will contain a flat interface which is nothing like iOS has been in the past:

“I’ve heard similar descriptions from sources who say iOS 7 is iOS “de-glitzed.” “Put it this way,” said one source who’s been briefed on iOS. “You know Game Center’s green felt craps table? Well, goodbye Circus Circus.”

Not a surprise, really. With Scott Forstall — an advocate for flashy, skeumorphic designand its stiched-leather and faux wood grain flourishes — now gone from Apple, and Ive in an expanded role, the current and former Apple employees I’ve spoken to say iOS 7 was destined for a new coat of paint. As one said, “Sounds like a much-needed ‘deForstallization.’”

Only time will tell what iOS 7 entails, but from my prediction, it seems like this OS will be redesigned from the ground-up, especially if it is taking Apple’s developers this long to simply “update” the firmware. We’ve never heard reports like these before, so it’s unlikely that iOS 7 will just have minor UI differences.

What are your thoughts? Do you think iOS 7 will be ENTIRELY different than its predecessor? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for WWDC where it’s likely that we will see the first developer preview of iOS 7. source

Although we’ve heard rumors that iOS 7 will be possibly releasing at WWDC, along with an overhauled interface, it seems that Apple is attempting to integrate iOS within the vehicles for easier hands-free access with Siri and Apple Maps. According to a new report from 9to5mac’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working with car manufacturers, and is adamant of having the iPhone connected to a center console where it would be able to display, or mirror, Maps and/or Siri information onto that screen:

According to people familiar with the plans, Apple is working with car makers on updated versions of car center consoles that could attach to iOS devices like the iPhone. Specifically, an iPhone could be plugged into a car and an optimized, redesigned version of Apple Maps will appear on the car’s built-in display instead of a proprietary GPS system found in many cars.

Back at WWDC 2012, Apple was beginning to launch an initiative where cars would be able to have a dedicated button for hands-free Siri. That plan was actually well thought out, however, we never really saw that play out with most car manufacturers. It wasn’t actually until these past few months that we saw these type of features hitting specific vehicles. Chevrolet was first to have a car that contained one of these “Siri” buttons, and Apple has even collaborated with Volkswagen on creating the “iBeetle”, which is of course centric of having your iOS device connected to your car.

Without a doubt, Apple is making an aggressive, and rather quick, move to having iOS deeply integrated within cars. Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, also happens to sit on the board of directors at Ferrari, and early this year, Ferrari began to equip its cars with iPad minis. Coincidence? I think not!

Several patents have leaked over the years showing Apple’s ideas with cars, however, I think this is a much more subtle way to get Apple into the automotive field, rather than building an iCar themselves. What are your thoughts? Do you think you’d get acustom to using iOS on your car’s dashboard? Let us know in the comments below, or on Twitter!

According to a new report from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, it’s rumored that Apple will be increasing the screen real-estate on the 6th generation iPhone, which would be slated to release in 2014. Despite last week’s clarification by Tim Cook that Apple isn’t looking to increase the size of the iPhone, Misek is still standing by his claims. Here’s the scoop, via Financial Post:

Apple Inc. will likely launch a larger screen iPhone 6 in June 2014, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.

While this may seem like an eternity for fans of the popular smartphone, he explains the wait is due to the time required to transition the device’s display technology.

FP raises the question of why anyone would want to buy an iPhone 5S, when rumors of the iPhone 6 are surfacing. Misek claims that the next-generation iPhone, or iPhone 5S, will bring different color schemes to the device, like the current iPod touches, as well as, a faster processor, likely the A7, and an improved camera.

Again, it seems that Apple’s conference call from last week completely goes against all of Misek’s predictions:

We always strive to create the very best display. Some customers value large screen size. Others value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, portability.

Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist.

Despite all of the rumors and what Apple has said, it’s possible that the 6th-generation iPhone may have a slightly increased screen size, but definitely not something drastic. What are your thoughts? Would you like a slightly bigger iPhone? source

According to internal Apple documents obtained by 9to5mac, it seems that Apple will soon be rendering the original iPhone ‘obselete’ this Summer, along with various older Mac laptops and desktops. The original iPhone was debuted back in 2007, so it would make sense that Apple will no longer service these products from June 11, 2013 onward.

Apple defines obsolete, or vintage, products as:

…those that were discontinued more than five and less than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued hardware service for vintage products with the following exception:

-Products purchased in the state of California, United States, as required by statute.

-Owners of vintage Macintosh products may obtain service and parts from Apple service providers within the state of California, United States.

-Owners of vintage iPod products in the state of California may obtain service from Apple Retail Stores or by contacting AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE.

Apple’s iPhone was discontinued over 7 years ago, and AT&T has even stopped activating original iPhones over 18 months ago. The original iPhone was announced and unveiled at the 2007 MacWorld conference, starting at $499 for a 4GB model on-contract. Now, you can get a much sleeker, faster, and all-around great iPhone 5 starting at $199, or even $99 if you choose to get on on T-Mobile’s network.

Question: Are you still rocking an original iPhone, or using one for any reason? Let us know in the comments below!

Apple’s next major iteration of desktop software, OS X 10.9, internally codenamed “Cabernet”, is rumored to release later this year and will bring many features that are seen on iOS to the Mac. OS X 10.9 is not said to be a major overhaul, rather implementation of different key iOS elements to the main operating system.

Despite bringing iOS features to OS X as its predecessor Mountain Lion did, OS X 10.9 will also concentrate on bringing power-user features to the Mac as well. Most notably, it’s been rumored that Finder will undergo a small upgrade, and will finally bring tabbed browsing. Currently, users would have to use a hack or a 3rd party application to enable that, so it seems that Apple is definitely listening to the community for certain design aspects.

It also seems that OS X 10.9 will also bring better support for multiple monitor setups, allowing a user to use multiple applications on multiple displays. This is a definite must-have for any Mac power-user, and Craig Federighi replied to a 9to5mac reader on the topic:

OS X 10.9 will undergo small UI changes, but definitely not any drastic overhauls. In November, we heard that early internal builds of OS X 10.9 contained Siri functionality and was up and running on the Mac. It’s unclear if Siri will be an addition via a OS X 10.9 download, or rather a hardware-based update.

It’s possible that we will see the first developer preview of OS X 10.9 at WWDC, along with other Apple beta goodies!

So far, OS X 10.9 looks like it’ll be a nice update, and be sure to stay tuned to the site and our YouTube channel for full WWDC coverage on June 10th. source

Remember that cool tweak that we reported on a while ago? The concept behind the tweak was to enable Chat Heads on iOS system-wide, therefore “de-sandbox”ing it. It was whipped up in 24 hours by developer Adam Bell, and today it’s been released. The new tweak, dubbed “MessageBox”, allows you to view, send and read Facebook messages via Chat Heads throughout your entire iOS device (besides the lockscreen), just as it would be on Android, or a Facebook Home-compatible device.

Adam has been prominent in the jailbreak scene, developing useful tweaks such as Stride, and many others. However, this is a tweak that many have been looking forward to, and it seems to be the best, and only, rendition of Chat Heads on a device that’s not Facebook Home-friendly. I’ve been using the beta for a little while now since I got in contact with Adam, and today, he’s released the beta build to everyone, with hopes that an official release will soon follow.

Here’s how to get it:

*You must be jailbroken, and have some type of SSH client, or iFile installed. You will also need the Facebook app (obviously).

1) Download the MessageBox .deb file from GitHub here.

2) Place the file in iFile, and install it with “Installer”.

3) After the tweak is installed, you’ll need to respring, or reboot your device.

Once you’ve done the aforementioned steps, open up a conversation in Facebook, tap the Home button, and voilá! The Chat Head should appear, and will then be able to be used throughout any application. Then, should you choose to remove the Chat Head, either force quit the Facebook application, or you can drag the Chat Head down to close it.

Remember- this tweak is still in beta, and there are many kinks that will need to be worked out to make this thing flawless, however, it’s still near perfect as it is now, and if you’re a heavy FB user, this will work just fine for you.

As of now, the only way to download the tweak is via GitHub, the tweak should be hitting Cydia very soon.

(Again, thanks to Adam Bell for sending us a pre-release copy. It was much appreciated!)

Scoring a ticket to WWDC was probably not in any of our favors, however, if you were lucky enough to score one in the two minutes that they were available, enjoy the conference. However, for those of you that did not, and happen to live in California, you can visit #AltWWDC, which promises to be an open, and free alternative to Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference. Yes, free.

As many of you may know, today, the page to purchase tickets for Apple’s WWDC went live. Apple announced their 2013 Worldwide Developer Conference yesterday, and will be held on June 10-14th. However, it didn’t take long for developers and attendees to slam Apple’s website, and completely sell out the conference in 2 minutes flat. For comparison purposes, WWDC 2012 sold out in an hour and 42 minutes.

At $1,599 per ticket, admission is anything but cheap, but if you do the math, you’d see that Apple taking in around 41.6 ticket sales per second, and would be generating $66,625 per second (if everyone was paying full price). That’s insane.

Despite selling out so rapidly, it’s hard to predict what we would possibly see at WWDC, but, the conference is also centric for developer sessions and will allow them to improve and enhance their coding for future applications. On the bright side, Apple does promise developers that we’re unable to attend that videos of sessions will be posted throughout the week of the event.

Also, if you happen to be a student who develops applications, you might want to check out Apple’s WWDC 2013 Student Scholarship.

With that said, is any of our audience going to WWDC? Let us know in the comments below. Be sure to stay tuned to iOSVlog.com during the conference for the latest news from the WWDC Keynote. source
