Here are a few tips to help you keep that amazing floral arrangement as lovely as day one.

A clean home is a happy home. This statement is just as true in the floral world as it is in ours. If you choice to reuse a container/vase from a previous flower purchase, you need to completely clean that unit with soap and water {washing entirely} or run through the dishwasher. Why? Well bacteria begins to build up in dirty vases and does not go away just because the vase is dry. So once you add water, it will become full of bacteria and your new bouquet will be subjected to the same bacteria that caused the previous bouquet to die.
Keep the vase 1/2-3/4 filled with water containing a flower food {normally provided by the florist}. While the floral food will make the arrangement last considerably longer, it is important to follow the mixing directions on the packet. The mixture should never be diluted with more or less water than is specified on the packet.
Add additional water frequently and change the water/food mixture every 2-3 days.If the flower food solution becomes cloudy before then, replace it immediately as well. If possible, re-cut stems by one inches with each water change.
Temperature is important! Keep flowers away from direct sunlight and in a room that is 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that appliances such as televisions and computers give off heat as well and floral arrangements should not be placed too close.
Stay clear of setting your flowers near fruit. Oddly enough when fruits ripen they give off an invisible gas called ethylene. While harmless to you, this gas is deadly to cut flowers. Ethylene is the gaseous hormone that reacts with flowers causing them to drop their petals. Thus by leaving them near ripening fruit, you will adversely cause them to wilt faster than normal.
