In the third episode of the ‘Inside Implementation: REALISE Webinar Series’, we hosted a reflective conversation with Prof. Ana Manzano and Dr. Emma Williams, co-editors of the new book Realist Evaluation: Principles and Practice. The session was moderated by Dr. Prashanth N S, who contributed a chapter on Realist Interviewing.

This episode explores the motivation behind creating a practice-oriented book on Realist Evaluation and how it fills key methodological and practical gaps in the field. The speakers discuss the book’s unique contribution to building evaluation capacity for researchers, practitioners, and evaluators working with complex social programs.

Drawing on her public service experience in the Northern Territory of Australia, Dr. Emma Williams shares insights from applying Realist methods in real-world settings. The discussion also highlights the growing global interest in Realist Evaluation, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and reflects on the culture of evaluation, its challenges, failures, and evolving practices.

The episode offers grounded perspectives on the use of Realist Evaluation in implementation research, including how these methods are being adapted across contexts to evaluate policy and programs.

In Episode 2 of the series, we hosted a panel on Implementation Research Methods with experts Dr. Malabika Sarker, Dr. Brynne Gilmore, and Dr. Sonu Goel, moderated by Dr. Upendra Bhojani. The speakers shared their diverse journeys and the methodological challenges they faced. They emphasized the need to build capacity in these methods to enhance research uptake and move away from Eurocentric models toward contextually rooted approaches. The session was hosted by CMHLP and was conducted at their office in Pune.

The key objectives of the session was to brainstorm on the ramifications of contemporary media on mental health and suicide related outcomes and to devise appropriate future strategies to engage with the media and develop effective strategies for mental health and suicide prevention. The session examined media from the lens of commercial determinants and hypothesised mechanisms through which the media (news and social) impacts mental health, suicide and self-harm behaviours.

The discussions were led by Soumithra Pathare, Director, CMHLP and was co led by Dr Upendra Bhojani, IPH and Dr Abhijit Nadkarni, Sangath. This was followed by sessions by CMHLP team on the contemporary landscape of suicide and self-harm in India as well as on the key players who constituted modern media in India. Following this, Dr Upendra Bhojani introduced the Commercial Determinants of Health framework and the potential ways to examine media from a CDOH lens. Dr Abhijit presented a session on media and mental health and shared insights on how they could be framed through the lens of CDOH.

The session wounded up on day two following the deliberations on possible outputs and next steps that could be developed from the brainstorming session. The team deliberated on developing opinion pieces as well as commentary articles on the dimension of media and CDOH. Three teams were formed comprising of members from all the organisations. This included one team that will engage in working on a commentary piece of possible ways to frame media from a CDOH lens. A second paper that examined the possible learnings that could be generated from efforts to curtail the tobacco and alcohol industry and its parallels with media. A third output involved one team working on a commentary piece on the idea of social media as a public good or not.

The lonely nature of the Ph.D. also prevents them from meeting their peers and interacting with them. Conferences, symposiums are such platforms where Ph.D. scholars get an opportunity to meet each other and build a network. However, considering the dominance of technical sessions within such platforms, it becomes difficult to engage and network with like-minded people closely. Thus, the aim of this workshop is to provide a platform that facilitates interaction among Ph.D. and aspiring Ph.D. students and stimulates learning from peers and experienced researchers.

This workshop is an amalgamation of technical sessions and informal conversations and would be conducted in a blended format with a week long online sessions (90 mins) and one in-person capacity building session in Bengaluru in September 2024. The workshop will use interactive methods and activities to open up conversations among students not only related to the research process but also on their experience of traversing through the Ph.D. terrain. This will be the second edition of the PhD workshop at the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru.

The workshop was led by Prashanth N Srinivas, Director of Institute of Public Health (IPH) Bengaluru, and Dr. Pragati Hebbar, Assistant Director for Research with guest lectures by Bruno Marchal, Brynne Gilmore and Dr. Praveenkumar Aivalli. This workshop was supported by project Realist Evaluation Advancement Lab for Implementation Strategy Explanations (REALISE), DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance and the Centre for Training Research and Innovation in Tribal Health (CTRITH).

Day one began with Dr. Tanya Seshadri, Assistant Director for Education at IPH, inaugurated the workshop. The session included discussions on complexity, systems thinking, ontology, epistemology, and the application of realist and theory-driven methods across HPSR research questions. Concepts of policies, programs, and evaluation entry points were explored, followed by an interactive session by Dr. Marchal on refining Realist Evaluation (RE) research questions to further the participant’s understanding of the methodology.

On day two participants developed initial program theories and learnt the systematic steps of RE. The sessions featured topics like realist synthesis, case studies, and collaborative learning through the “Learning Together” activity. Participants, split into five groups, analyzed C-M-O configurations, middle-range theories. Another insightful session on day two was facilitated by Dr. Brynne Gilmore who focused on data analysis and synthesis in RE which was followed by the presentation of a case study in applying RE by Mr. Praveen Aivalli, PhD scholar at UCD Dublin (a part of the previous cohort of the same workshop).

Day three began with a session on Theory of Change. Participants applied their knowledge by developing a realist study plan and presenting it to facilitators. Later discussions focused on resources, support for RE practitioners, and quality standards in Realist Evaluation and Synthesis.. The workshop concluded with ideas for nurturing a community of practice and continued collaboration.
