Hollywood Video FX, an app by Macphun allows you to edit the visual appearence of the video through its various filters.

As shown (or rather heard) above, you can also swap out the original audio with various tracks and apply Vignette settings to give it a more dream like appearence.

You can also speed up the video or slow it down, although unlike SlowMo you can not use the original audio when altering the video speed settings (which is a serious draw back in my honest opinon).

The only thing missing from Hollywood FX is the ability to add more sound tracks to its limited supply.

This app is currently selling for $2.99 (although truth be told I would pay $9.99 for this app) and is a must have app for iPhone 3GS users everywhere.

I personally wasn’t too thrilled with the app, until after the last update which allows you to speed up the video (twice the normal speed) which can make for some hilarious comedy.

Since my friends would kill me if I uploaded their faces to YouTube (at least the ladies would), here is a video of my grusome face–double speed.

You can also slow the video down as well (up to 8 times), although that distorts the audio in the process (which is great if you desire a few chuckles).

Note: This is me in -2.0 (2 times slower). -8.0 was way too long

SlowMo does give you the option to not distort the audio (which is great if you’re playing music in the background) via settings.

Note: This app compliments ReelDirector (also by Nexvio) which as of this post is on sale for $5 (I originally paid $8 for it).

It looks like AT&T has finally admitted what many of us have suspected for a long time–the network is not as great as they advertise.

This will hopefully be much more efficent than venting on Twitter (although I do have to say that their customer service on Twitter responds very quickly).

The only thing missing from this app is a speed test (like Speedtest has) as that would pinpoint the ACTUAL strength of the area (as shown below).

Here is an app every Boy Scout, hiker or Survivorman fan (at least the newbie’s) will love.

MyNature Animal Tracks is (as the name reveals) a basic reference to animals footprints in the soil, which can be very helpful if you suspect that a black bear or mountain lion is roaming your back yard.

What I loved

MyNature provides various images of what some of these tracks look like in real life, although many animals only have a basic sketch with a brief description detailing what they could look like in the wild.

As an extra bonus, MyNature includes the sounds of a few ferocious beasts, which makes it an excellent tool for inspiring young geeks to explore their world–beyond the PC.

What I disliked (with suggestions)

In order to make up for the lack of images accompanying animal tracks, the creator asks users to submit their own images via Flickr.

While this is a novel approach, the fact that this is not built within the app is disappointing (especially since  Flickr supports image uploading via iPhone from within).

It would be also cool if iPhone 3GS fans could submit video of their findings as well via YouTube (which has an API for iPhone geek freaks).

Last but not least, I think the creator needs to rethink the Journal feature, as most people don’t want to keep their thoughts locked within one app.

Outsourcing that feature to Facebook (perhaps by having it post to Facebook notes) might not only be wiser, but help this app go viral.

Conclusion

The app costs $7, which is expensive in my honest opinion. I would probably pay $5 for this app (and perhaps $6 if it had more social features built-in).

Overall this app is quite useful, one which I plan on using to help teach some of the young boys (at my church) how to track animals (which will be helpful as many of their dads hunt).

For the first time, I have no regrets about paying the extra $150 after upgrading to an iPhone 3GS (when I could have picked a refurbished 3G for $50).

ReelDirector, an iPhone app created by Nexvio allows video professionals (as well as amatures like me) to mix and mash multiple videos together.

This app is fairly expensive at $8, although I’ll admit to you that it’s worth every penny (as it has no rivals in the app store.

But iWant More

While I loved this app in general, I wished that I could do more with the videos besides insert credits and resort the order in which they played.

It would be cool if I could edit the video itself (as in add affects directly), but I’ll be content with what I have for now.

Regardless of whether you are on a laptop, desktop or smartphone, if you do not have a way to kill off memory hoging programs/applications, your technological device is nothing more than a fancy piece of plastic crap with metal thrown in.

The same rule applies to the iPhone, which despite it’s awesomeness is unable to “just say no” to apps holding on to memory–even after you close them.

Fortunately there is an app called System Activity Monitor (from Recession Apps) that can free up some much needed memory lest you encounter the “black screen of death!”

You can also check out your CPU processes as well as view the geekier settings on the iPhone such as IP address, MAC address, Wifi network, etc. (if you are into that sort of thing).

While there are a few rivals to System Activity Monitor, I have yet to come across an app that is superior (although if you have discovered one feel free to sound off in the comment section below).

One of my biggest gripes with the iPhone is the lack of browser diversity. While I do like the fact that Safari is (overall) very decent, I hate the 8 window limitation, not to mention the lack of scroll bar (among other things).

The Perfect Browser resolves many of these issues for me, and here are a few of the features that I loved (as well as what I disliked) about this app.

The Good (feature rich)

Unlike the default Safari browser, The Perfect Browser has REAL tabs (not windows), giving me true geek freedom by allowing me to check out multiple sites at once.

You can switch between tabs with a simple tap, or (if you have a number open) slide between them using your finger.

Next was privacy mode, which allows me to surf the web incognito, which is quite useful for those of you who are paranoid.

To activate this mode, simply click on the green plus (at the bottom), then tap on preferences, then select history off, as well as clear cookies on exit (and do not forget to hit the red button below too!).

Believe it or not, having a scroll bar was one of the features that really attracted me, as it easier to scroll through a website without tapping my finger to death.

To activate it all one has to do is hit the green plus button, select “Activate Hyper Scroll,” then scroll up and down with ease to their heart’s content.

Another feature I loved was word search, which (like Google Chrome) allows me to find specific words or even names of individuals.

To activate it simply hit the magnifying glass at the bottom (not shown here), type in a word, then hit ok.

Last but not least is web compression, which basically launches all websites in a “mobile view,” which is helpful if you are on EDGE or have a low 3G signal.

Other features of note image saving (from within the browser), bookmarking and session restore (which is very useful if the browser ever crashes).

The Bad (its in the tabs)

While the tab feature makes this app glorious, sliding between them can be a pain. Hopefully the developer comes up with an easier method, especially those with basketball hands like me.

The other annoyance came when closing a tab. While the page would go blank, the tab would not disappear, which is irritating if you happened to close 9/10 tabs.

The only way to remove these “ghost tabs” is to close out the browser and reopen it again (which was annoying).

Conclusion

While the Perfect Browser may not be Google Chrome (which I would love to have on my iPhone Apple–hint hint!), its the closest thing to it thus far.

The app is (as of this writing) currently on sale for $1 (which is 70% of its normal price), so you might want to consider purchasing it before the price goes up.

Ever since purchasing an iPhone many moons ago, I was looking for a way to upload my music to “the cloud” (which is geek speak for uploading files on someone else’s server), without having to go through Mobile Me (which may not be worth the expense).

I was hoping that a service called Lala.com would be able to back up my music and allow me to stream it to my iPhone, but unfortunately their iPhone app never made it past Steve Job’s inquisition board, leaving music lovers at a loss.

That is until Imeem showed up with their shiny iPhone app.

What I loved

Upon first glance, Imeem appears to be yet another competitor in the iRadio wars raging throughout the App store. Users can with a simple tap listen to popular tunes of the year, or from across the Imeem universe.

Users can also choose to like (or “heart”) a song, or reject it by hitting the “x” (similar to Last.fm). You can also share the song with others (via email) or purchase it from iTunes.

But what makes Imeem stand out from rivals like Pandora (which I frequently listen too) is that you can upload your own music, videos and images from iTunes (or computer), allowing you to backup your media files just in case your iPhone & computer are damaged/stolen.

Another cool feature that set Imeem apart (aside from its storage/backup capabilities) was the ability to listen to your favorite songs again, instead of relying on the “good ol’ AI” to play your song perchance (like in Pandora & Last.fm).

What I hated

While I enjoyed the fact that I could upload my library to Imeem’s servers, I was disappointed that there was no way I could create a playlist with the music I uploaded to Imeem.

This would make the app really shine in my honest opinion, and would (perhaps) help convince more people to test out its service.

Also Imeem’s “Discover” service for music was not that great when compared against Pandora or even Last.fm, although this is probably because I have been using their service for a much shorter time frame (days compared with months on Pandora).

Last but not least, Imeem songs seem to “cut off” near the end randomly, which I found to be quite annoying after you have just discovered an awesome song.

Conclusion

Overall, the Imeem app is pretty good, and since its free users may want to check it out on the App Store.

Hopefully Imeem will consider making the service more social (perhaps by allowing users to share their likes/dislikes via Facebook, Twitter and Friendfeed within the app), as well as customize the overall layout of the app with themes (as the grayish-blue background gets old after a while).

Disclosure: Imeem sent me a $25 iTunes gift certificate for installing their app and retweeting a message on Twitter. I probably would have reviewed their app anyways (as I was already looking for something similar on the app store).

It looks like a developer from Switzerland has launched an iPhone app called GoldBegger (formally known as iBeggar) to the tune of $1,000 (minus a penny).

What do you get for a grand you say? A digital clock, a chance to listen to the sweet sounds of the ocean, and last but not least a tap counter in which you can compete against yourself for top score.

Ironically you can acquire all of these features (and more) from the App store for free (i.e. Ethan Productions for ocean sounds, Tap Tap Revenge 2 for finger fun, and Apples standard alarm clock).

While I could go on why this app is doomed to fail (that is unless Apple pulls it off their store like they did with the useless $1,000 I Am Rich app), the fact that this guy is trying to build a company in these trying times speaks volumes, so I’ll end this post on a good note.

Warning: You are about to enter the “Rant Zone.”

If the developer (or any other aspiring App developer) is reading this, what we need are practical apps that enhance, entertain or enlighten our lives.

Unless your app has 3D qualities (like Super Monkey ball) or can render a Microsoft Excel sheet up to a million rows (like Exitplan Plus) then you should not charge more than $10 for it, let alone $1,000 as no one (wise) will buy it (provided you are not a millionare of course).

If you want to make some serious cash by building something in Steve Jobs playground, create something awesome and price it under $5.

If you are looking for direction, here are a few suggestions below.

• A Google docs app that syncs (not merely imports) both ways with docs, spreadsheets, and Google presentation.
• Social Network apps for Orkut.com and QQ Zone, which dominate India and China respectively (and who both each have hundreds of millions of Internet users within their borders).
• A decent app for MovableType (as Six Apart has created one for TypePad, but not for self hosted blogs).
• A wikipedia app that lets you edit entries in wikipedia (note: has anyone created an app that does this?)

I could list more, but I do not want to end up writing a book here (and then port it over to Stanza).

So if you are going to create an iPhone app, please build something useful–and for the love of Steve please sell it at a reasonable price.

If you are one of the lucky few to have snagged a Google Voice account (or better yet transferred over from GrandCentral) then you will be pleased to hear that Sean Kovacs has developed an iPhone app for Google Voice, which will be selling in the app store for $2.99 (confirmed by Sean via email).

GV Mobile will allow users to not only call their contacts already listed on their iPhone (a feature the GrandDialer app via GrandCentral could do), but will also allow them to check their voicemails (as well as delete them) and send text messages to their friends from within the app (which can save you some extra money down the road).
