It's difficult to overstate how intertwined smartphone and social media are. The iPhone, with its stellar camera, GPS functionality and constant data connection, is a device that seems built for social media. The possibilities were always there, but they hadn't yet been fully utilized. Now, thanks to an app called KLIK, they are.

What is KLIK?

KLIK is a camera-replacement app for the iPhone. Unlike the dozens of others on the market, which usually rely on image processing techniques or filters to sell themselves, KLIK is different. It uses an algorithm for detecting faces, automatically tagging users on Facebook either before or after taking a photo.

That might sound strange at first, but KLIK actually just relies on information that's already available. You link the app with your accounts on social networking sites, and it combs through your friends list gathering information about their faces. Once it has searched through your friend's list, the app intelligently detects and tags faces.

How It Helps

KLIK's main benefit is obvious: It removes the legwork from going through photos and individually tagging each and every person. If you've ever uploaded just a handful of photos, you already know how difficult it can be to manually tag each person. This is an app that removes that bridge between your iPhone and your social networks.

For those who are inclined to upload dozens of photos a week, KLIK will be a lifesaver. For those who post photos less frequently, it will still be a handy app to keep installed for when it's needed. It's a free app, so there's really no reason not to have it.

What If Your Friends Aren't Registered on Social Networks?

This is a common question that was raised when the beta version of KLIK was released some time ago. If the people in your photos aren't on any of your social networks, you'll have to manually tag them. After they are manually tagged, the app forms an algorithm for who that person is. That way, when you take a picture of that person in the future, the app will be able to detect who it is.

Other Features

The new app also comes loaded with filters, which many users will see as a critical feature. These were somewhat of a necessary feature in order for KLIK to compete with some of the already-established camera apps out there. What really sets KLIK's filters apart is that they are specifically designed for use on pictures of peoples' faces. Instead of having access to a set of universal filters, you'll be working with filters that were custom-built for the photos you're taking with KLIK.

On the whole, KLIK is a neat iPhone app. It has the potential to become the go-to camera app for iOS users. It's also only on version 1.0, meaning that there's still a lot of room for the app to grow. It's a free download with a very intriguing premise, so it's definitely worth a download to see if it's something you're interested in.

A Peak adviser for the Australian Government has given the 'All Clear' for Apple iOS Devices to be used for storing and communicating classified government information.

Mike Burgess, acting director of the DSD (Defence Signals Directorate) said the department has led the way in developing means to enable devices running the latest Apple operating system, called iOS version 5, to handle secret information up to Protected level.

The Defense Signals Directorate has been working closely with key bodies within the industry to develop a practical protocol for government to securely use the technology.

Mike Burgess states : "Embracing new technologies, such as smartphones and tablet PCs, provides government with a genuine opportunity to conduct its business more efficiently,"

"However, the threat of government information being stolen or compromised is also very real."

The DSD has worked continuously to help agencies improve the way they protect precious government information, whilst enabling them to take advantage of iOS devices, such as the iPhone & iPad.

He said that iOS5 has successfully passed a range of stringent and intensive security assessments to ensure it meets the Australian Government's security requirements.

The first of it's kind, this security evaluation covers devices owned and managed by a range of Australian Government agencies that implement the DSD security advice.

For more information on the DSD, including a detailed security hardening guide, check out their website : http://www.dsd.gov.au

The next generation iPhone is here and needless to say, it has been selling like hot cakes.

The new virtual assistant Siri integrates a search engine with voice recognition software, and provides a streamlined experience whether in the car, at home, or with friends.

In addition, the phone provides a much better camera than the previous phone, as well as a faster processor, the A5.

Below are a few tips and tricks for getting the most out of your new device.

Build a Relationship

No, not with Siri, but you are more than welcome to if that's what you want. I'm talking about setting relationships up with Siri in a way that it will know who your boss or mom is, so you don't always have to call out names. For example, if you wanted to tell Siri to send a message to your mom, telling her that you will miss her birthday party, you can simply say "Send a message to my mom to say that I will be missing her birthday party."

The way you do this is by going into the Contacts app, which by default is in your Utilities folder. In here, check to make sure that the person is already in your contacts list. Once it is, all you have to do is pull up Siri and say "(Contact name) is my (relationship)", and when Siri asks for confirmation, just say yes. So if you want to mention that "Mom is my mom" or "Bradford Smith is my boss", Siri will confirm that those relationships are indeed real and that you would like it to remember that.

Make Lists Easier

If you constantly run out of food (who doesn't?) or you have a lot of things to think about, you probably make lists pretty often, either mentally or on scrap paper. With the iPhone 4S, you no longer have to worry about forgetting an item on the list or losing your piece of crumpled paper. First, you must set up the list in the Reminders app, but that is the only manual thing you have to do. For example, go under the Reminders app and make a new list titled "Grocery List". Now if you want to add anything to it, just call up Siri and say something like "Add eggs to the grocery list", and it will automatically add it for you. Much easier than typing it all, isn't it?

Take a Screenshot

Ok, so this feature is not exactly new to the iPhone 4S, but you can take a screenshot of your sweet background and app setup. All you have to do is press and hold the sleep button located on the top right corner of the phone, and immediately after press and hold down the home button. After a moment of holding down both buttons, you will hear a camera shutter indicating that a picture was taken. Go to your camera roll folder and you will see that the newest picture added is a screenshot of your phone's screen.

Give Stunning Keynote Presentations

If you do PowerPoint or Keynote presentations a lot, the iPhone 4S has a great new feature for you. You need an Apple TV to do this, but it is still significantly cheaper than projectors and provides a great presentation platform. You see, the iPhone supports what's called Airplay, which means that you can connect to the Apple TV and stream music, movies and photos straight from your phone over the wireless network.

With the newest 4S, you can also do what's called Mirroring, which means that what you see on your phone is exactly what will appear on the TV. If you play Angry Birds while connected to an Apple TV with Mirroring on, all of your friends will be able to see you miss that coveted three star score.

During Mirroring mode, if you open up a presentation in Keynote you will be able to go through each slide seamlessly, and there is an option that will allow you to see the slide notes on your phone, while the viewers won't be able to see them on the television. This is huge for those who constantly make presentations and have a lot of notes to memorize. Finally, if you press and hold anywhere on the phone's screen during a presentation you will see that a red dot appears on the television. Move your finger around and you will discover that this will serve as an alternative to the laser pointers of yesteryear.

Endomondo Sports Tracker

This app is for the competitive folks out there. It will track your progress during your sessions, whether the activity is hiking, running, the treadmill, or cycling. It also includes a built in interval timer that can come especially handy if you do any HIIT. If you are feeling especially competitive, you can upload your traveled distances, times and progress to the website and compare yourself to many other Endomondo users.

FitnessBuilder

Probably the best app available on the market for working out, this gem costs a lot more than most of the other apps, but it is definitely worth it. It includes tons of workout videos and pictures, and if you pay a few dollars each month you will have access to so much more. It also has a great feature that can create workout routines for you based on location, so if you are outside, in your bathroom, in the basement, at work, at school, or at the gym, it will customize the workouts so that they may be accomodated.

MyFitnessPal

MyFitnessPal is one of my favorite fitness-related apps. It is extremely helpful for those who are trying to lose weight. It will let you keep a keen eye on the amount of calories you consume each day, in addition to the amount of calories you burn while doing activities and exercises. You can set the amount of daily calories you would like to stay under, and you enter in each food that you eat. Its food database is huge; and if you scan the food's barcode, its data will be immediately recorded into the app, providing a very accurate portrait of your daily eating habits.

Also; the exercise part is fantastic. If you walked for a half hour; or you ran for fifteen minutes, or maybe you just cleaned the house and it took you four hours, you can enter it all into the exercise tracker and it will determine how many calories you lost, and how much more calories you need to burn in order to remain under your daily recommended caloric intake.

Fooducate

Fooducate does exactly what the name implies: it educates you on any food you could possibly wonder about. When you are shopping for food at the grocery store, simply use the app's built in barcode scanner to scan the food. Once it processes the information; the app will grade the item based on its healthiness. It will also tell you which ingredients are in that food that you should watch out for, as well as explain why you should not eat those ingredients and what effects it can have on your body. If the food item is not that healthy at all; Fooducate will happily provide other recommendations that cost around the same price, yet are a much better alternative.

Whether you are a student with a busy workload or a hard worker who needs to constantly remain productive and connected to your entire business, these five apps (in no specific order) will make a huge impact on your efficiency.

Quickoffice

Quickoffice is one of those apps that you won't ever stop using. While it is not a free app, it certainly costs a lot less than Microsoft Office and iWorks. You will be able to open, read and edit various different documents from Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

It can handle many different types of formats from both Office and iWorks, allowing you to finish your school paper while on the bus to class by using the Word section or open your marketing team's latest efforts through the PDF reader. Each section is powerful in its own right; Word will allow you to change paragraph and font formatting such as bullet points, bold and italic font, font type and size, indentation, line spacing and so much more.

In the spreadsheet section you can change the sizes of cells, add equations to cells and do most of the things you can do in Excel.

Evernote

This app is free, and works best if you have it installed on all of your devices, not just your IPhone. Basically, it is a cloud based service that will allow you to create and store notes, which can be divided by notebooks. If you work with a team and need to provide everyone the same exact outline, you can just post it here and whoever has Evernote installed on their mobile device or computer can immediately see any changes you make. In addition, you can take pictures and post them here for fast exposure to everyone else on your team.

Dropbox

Simply put, Dropbox is amazing. Not a day goes by that I don't use it throughout the entire day. It is, in my opinion, the best cloud service as well as the easiest to use. Simply download the app on your phone or computer, and register an account with them. It's all free, and you will be given plenty of storage.

The great thing about Dropbox is that you can upload files to it instantly, and you have the option of generating a public link so that you may share that file with someone else without giving them access to your entire Dropbox account. You can also set up teams that all share a Dropbox account, so if you work in a field that requires great teamwork and constant file transferring between team members, this will be the easiest way to do it.

For school, you can simply upload your essay to your Dropbox account, and on a school computer visit the main website, log into your account, and open up your file there. With this amazing app, there is no longer a need for flash drives, as you can store movies, music, pictures, and any other files you can think of.

Mint

If you need help organizing your finances, or simply want to have a way to monitor and track all of your spending, income and debt, Mint is the app for you. To get started, simply visit the website at Mint.com and create an account. It will have you enter in all of your financial information so that it knows what to track. After the website is all filled out, just download the app. All of this is free, and you can set budgets, keep an eye on investments, track your income and spending ratio, and view your purchase history on all of your credit cards, bank accounts and loans. Because you can't change or edit anything in the app, only the website, it is completely safe from identity theft, and is viewable only.

Dragon Dictation

The last app on our list is Dragon Dictation. If you haven't heard of it already, Dragon Dictation is a powerful dictation software that was previously available only on computers. You just talk into a microphone and it will translate your words into text. The app works exactly the same way, but you save yourself all of that money because the IPhone app is free! If you want to write a paper while you drive, just set Dragon Dictation to begin and tell it what to write. You can edit the text without touching the phone, as well as add punctuation wherever you see fit.

What's better than having a shiny new Phone 4S?

A shiny new iPhone 4S with sweet accessories to match, that's what!

Here are the top 10 coolest accessories for the iPhone 4S (and its predecessor the IPhone 4).

Boxwave Keyboard Buddy

This awesome gadget is especially useful for those who made the jump from a phone with a physical keyboard to an IPhone's tiny virtual keyboard. Basically, it will attach a slider keyboard to your IPhone, taking you back to the days of the Sidekick and other sliders. It will add a little extra weight and bulk to the phone, but it may pay off by the functionality it provides.

GorillaMobile Flexible Tripod

This handy tool allows your phone to be anchored to any type of pole or hook. The tripod is very sturdy, and has a form fitting grip on the phone to prevent any accidental drops. The GorillaMobile Flexible Tripod ties into our next accessory, which is...

iPhone SLR Lens Mount

...an SLR lens mount for your phone! That's right; you will be able to attach any Nikon or Canon SLR lens to your phone (yes, even those massive 300mm behemoths) using its built in adapter. You'll be able to enjoy taking high quality pictures with fish eye lenses, extreme zoom, or both. Additionally, it has a tough case that allows the mounted lens to remain attached securely to the phone, and the same case provides a hole for a full sized camera tripod to screw in, as well as a strap for you to carry around your camera phone, quite literally.

Apple TV

If you don't already own one, what are you waiting for? This handy gadget will allow you to stream Netflix and your iTunes library to your television set, but when paired with an IPhone you can also stream pictures, movies and music wirelessly. If you need to do presentations, using an IPhone 4S with Mirroring mode on will enable you to display your presentation over the Apple TV without any cables, and you can see your notes on your phone privately.

Lifeproof Case

While this case can be really expensive, the end result is totally worth it. The Lifeproof case is extremely durable, and even more waterproof. It may not be as shock or drop resistant as the Otterbox Defender Series case, but it is definitely more resistant to water. If you visit the Lifeproof website you will be greeted with crazy videos of people texting and making calls on their phone while snorkeling. Best of all? The case is extremely thin, especially considering the protection it provides. It will add less than a millimeter in thickness to your beloved IPhone.

Otterbox Defender Series Case

I mentioned it before, and I had to include it. While it may not be as waterproof as the Lifeproof case, it is extremely durable. There is a video online of a person dropping their IPhone from the 23rd story window. He has the phone's camera filming the entire fall, and you can see that the phone does not break at all. He picks up the phone and proceeds to use it as if nothing happened! While it certainly adds a lot of extra bulk to the phone, if you don't have any protection plan or warranty on it, this may be the next best thing in terms of keeping your device protected.

Yubz Mobile Phone Retro Handset

OK, so this isn't just for the IPhone, but I feel as though using it with the IPhone instills a high sense of comedic irony. It is basically a retro handset, kind of like the ones that came with the phones which you had to stick your finger into the hole and spin until you reached each number. You attach it to your phone, and make calls without having the IPhone up to your face. It's funny, because you are using an old styled handset with modern cutting edge technology.

My Phone Leash

Just like you would put a leash on your dog or child when you don't want to lose them, you can also attach a leash to your IPhone. For a low price, you will be able to secure the phone to your belt with its retractable cable, and if you are going to be using it for extended periods of time you can also lock the leash so it doesn't retract.

Mophie Juice Pack Air

Even though your phone already gets great battery life for a smartphone, you can always get more juice out of it. With the Mophie Juice Pack Air, you can add a case to your phone that doubles as an extra battery. It won't add a lot of bulk, but you will be able to squeeze an average of 6 hours more out of your IPhone.

Behringer iNuke Boom

This may not be the most realistic accessory ever, but it certainly exists and it most certainly is awesome. If you haven't heard of the Behringer iNuke Boom, I suggest you look it up right now. It is a massive iPhone/iPod dock that dwarfs any other dock or stereo system in power, and its sheer size means that you may not be able to fit this in your bedroom. For a mere $30,000, you can have yourself a 10,000 watt speaker system that will annoy your next door neighbors more than your garage band did. The dock measures 8 feet across, 4 feet tall, and weighs over 700 pounds so you may need to get a friend to help you lift it up the stairs.

ITWIRE : Web articles from dubious sounding sources may well be promising that full jailbreaks and unlocks for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are available, but they’re still scams, with French hacker “pod2g” showing photos of jailbroken 2 and 4S devices and promising public availability is still “coming soon”.

If you’re a scammer selling either non-existing jailbreaks and unlocks for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, or are selling jailbreaks that use copyright-infringing code when jailbreaking has always been free, then you’re going to do at least one thing: spam Google with articles claiming the jailbreak is here.
Unfortunately, the jailbreak and any unlock for iOS 5.0.1 on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S is STILL NOT HERE for the public, and until you read that it is finally available, in a reputable publication such as iTWire.com, or any of the world’s other MAJOR and respected publications, please don’t waste your time, money or hope on what is, for now, still a scam.

There is, however, some good news. Ye olde French hacker, M'Sieu "Pod2G", who is working with the iPhone Dev Team and other renowned iDevice hackers, has posted a couple of photos showing images of an iPhone 4S and an iPad 2 in untethered jailbroken form.

The promise is that the untethered jailbreak is coming soon, and until it does, as it's clearly not here yet, all that the non-hackers of the world can do is to wait a bit longer.

Of course, if you’re not interested in jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2, then whether any form of jailbreak arrives or not is irrelevant to you, and it would seem that the vast majority of iDevice owners are happy to use their devices as Apple intended - free of worry that future official updates will bork their devices, and free of the interminable wait for each new jailbreak to arrive.

However, there are those that say your iDevice isn’t truly yours until you’ve somehow voided the warranty, others simply love the thrill of doing something you’re not supposed to, and others still just love tinkering and the challenge.

There are also those that, sadly, simply wish to pirate as many apps as possible, depriving hard working developers from an income, which is a shame – especially considering how Apple’s iPhone and iOS have made app prices plunge when compared with traditional boxed software.

Naturally, we don’t condone piracy of any form here at iTWire, and strongly suggest, especially given the incredibly low pricing, that you buy your apps, so that the developers in question are further encouraged to continue creating.

That way you also avoid having your personal information slurped from your phone via an infected, pirated app, downloaded from some dubious source.

However, what you do is up to you, but dancing with the devil in the pale moonlight isn’t exactly my idea of a good time.

So… please do not be fooled by endless articles online promising you that a jailbreak for the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 has miraculously just been released and is available for $19.99 or $29.99 or whatever rip-off price is being scammed from you.

When the official jailbreak is released, it will be released free of charge, along with instructions on how to apply it, so if it’s something you really, really want to try… please be patient for a bit longer.

The iDevice hackers have never failed to deliver in the end, and clearly, they won’t fail to deliver this time either!

Samsung have taken action against Apple, calling for a court case to effectively ban sales of the iPhone 4S in Australia.

This is the latest of seemingly tit for tat battle between the two smartphone and tablet makers, who are battling it out in Multiple countries. Last month in Australia, Apple won a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.

In this latest jab, Samsung is claiming that the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4 & the iPad 2 infringe on three patents registered in Australia. These patents protect data transmission methods, and include:

Method and apparatus for transmitting/receiving packet data using pre-defined length indicator in a mobile communication system (WCDMA)

Method and apparatus for data transmission in a mobile telecommunication system supporting enhanced uplink service (HSPA)

Method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving data with high reliability in a mobile communication system supporting packet data transmission (HSPA).

However, some believe that Samsung's battle is doomed to fail. Patent Expert Florian Muller said that the korean based gadget manufacturer is fighting a loosing battle:

"I believe Samsung's attack on the iPhone 4S in Australia is doomed to fail because it relates to three patents declared essential to the 3G telecommunications standard. On Friday, a Dutch judge already made it clear that Samsung can't seek an injunction based on such patents, and I'd be extremely surprised if an Australian judge took a different perspective on FRAND (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) licensing commitments. "The odds are very long against Samsung overcoming all of Apple's defences," Müller concluded in his blog post.

Samsung are currently pushing for the court case to be heard as soon as possible, whilst Apple are attempting to the delay the case.

Do you love Indian food? If so, you are certainly not alone. The rich and delicious aromas of the many spices, the solid foundation of the rice, the fun of using so many sauces and curries, and the little sides that bring it all together...isn't it making your mouth water? I know that I am salivating as I type this.

The problem with Indian food is that buying it tends to be rather expensive. In fact, two people going for a takeout curry with a side of plain naan can spend up to $35 for the meal, without any drinks, desserts or appetizers. Which keeps many people from indulging in their favorite foods, and instead going with a cheaper option like pizza when they go out.

Thanks to the iPhone, some of this can be corrected. If you are craving Indian food and nothing else will do, you can find great local restaurants within your budget, or else learn to make your own. Here are some of the best iPhone apps for Indian food junkies.

Cook Indian!

If you are hoping to learn how to create some of your favorite Indian dishes (and some you might not have heard of or tried), here are some apps that will help you do it.

iCooking Indian Cuisine

Learning to cook delicious Indian dishes is simple with this app. It has three distinct sections: the first is a collection of recipes with accompanied photos, the second is for any recipes you might want to add, and the third is an easy to read shopping list for all selected dishes that will keep you from forgetting anything at the store. You can search meals by type, such as meat, vegetarian or rice and breads. Cost: $0.99

Sweet'N'Spicy

It had a rough start, but after a few updates this has become a must-have app for any Indian food lover. Full of tons of recipes for easy dishes, they are continuing to add more into their catalog. It can be adapted for the user's level of experience in cooking, as well. Cost: Free

Indian Food: Daily Recipes

This is a great syncing app that works by letting you get recipe updates as users put them into the database and you sync up your device. There is an emphasis on social media, so if you like to share your cooking experiences, get tips and just chat, this is a fun one you will enjoy. Cost: Free

Indian Recipes

This is technically a desktop widget for the Mac OS X dashboard, rather than an actual app. But it has a huge number of recipes with regular updates, and it's free. So it is worth a download.

FastFood

An easy to use, straight forward restaurant finder, you can search out places nearby, that have deals and promotions, or just by category. It is a quick way to search out an affordable Indian restaurant when you are craving some garlic naan and a korma. Cost: Free

Menus

Want to see how much something costs, or what a local eatery has to offer? This app has a nice collection of menus from restaurants, both small and chain, in your area. Cost: Free

iWant

Originally, this was a simple map for shopping and restaurants. But it has since become a major tracking app that uses the on-board GPS unit to locate places in your area, while using popular reviews, movie showtime sites and the yellow pages to better target addresses and information. You can search for a dining option through categories, which makes it easy to find any Indian restaurants that have been critiqued by UrbanSpoon, or have listed themselves in the Yellow Pages.

Other Useful Apps

Food & Wine

Want to know more about Indian food, or other kinds of cuisine? Hoping to learn a bit about wine and the best food pairings? This is a useful little app where you can find anything you need to know.

Conclusion

There you have it: all you need to start getting Indian food more often, for less. So, whether you are going out or staying in, buying from a local eatery or making your own, you can enjoy these delicious cultural dishes any time you like, thanks to the iPhone.

The airline says the flight had landed in Sydney when the phone started emitting a "significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow".

A flight attendant was able to extinguish the glow and no passengers on board were injured.

The matter has been reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) as well as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for investigation.

The iPhone has been handed over to the ATSB for analysis, and Rex will not comment further while investigations are ongoing.

Apple has been contacted for comment.

Transcript From Audio Interview On ABC - iPhone gives wrong type of warm glow

ELEANOR HALL: When the iPhone 4 was released it was one of the world's hottest phones. Now it's actually caught fire on board an Australian plane.

Regional Express Airlines issued a statement today saying that on a flight from Sydney to Lismore a passenger's phone began emitting dense smoke and a red glow, as Matt Wordsworth reports.

MATT WORDSWORTH: Regional Express flight ZL319 was on the tarmac at Sydney airport when the incident happened.

A statement from REX says a passenger's phone began producing a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow.

It goes on to say a flight attendent immediately extinguished the handset and no one was harmed.

A photo has been provided showing what appears to be an iPhone 4.

Scorching about the size of a thumbnail is visible on the rear casing and the glass surface has been shattered. It's not known whether that was caused by the heat or by efforts to extinguish it.

REX says the incident was immediately reported to the Air Transport Safety Bureau and the phone has been handed over for analysis.

It says it will await the outcome of the probe for further direction.

The ATSB says it will consult with the airline and the phone manufacturer during its investigation but has no previous record of a smart phone self igniting.

Chris Althaus is chief executive of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, which represents mobile phone makers.

CHRIS ALTHAUS: Manufacturers require their products and legislation requires a standard to be followed, rigorous safety checks; very, very rarely have there been any problems of this kind associated with a mainstream manufacturer.

If they are they're very quickly identified and products are withdrawn but as I say it's rare. With so many after market products on the market we're very concerned that people buy the proper products for their phone, particularly batteries, to avoid this sort of outcome.

MATT WORDSWORTH: It's not known if this iPhone was genuine or fake but Mr Althaus says there's a worldwide surge in fake batteries and warned consumers of the risks.

CHRIS ALTHAUS: There is an enormous volume of counterfeit and fake product that is appearing on the market. We urge people to be very careful if they're buying batteries that they buy them from a reputable dealer, look for products that are identified by the manufacturer of your phone as compatible and be very aware of cheap imitations.

MATT WORDSWORTH: He says the industry is so concerned it's set up a website so people are aware.

CHRIS ALTHAUS: www.spotafakephone.com and it's a website that gives people advice on how to spot fake batteries and chargers and also urges people to stick with the major manufacturers, buy from reputable outlets and certainly be very aware of cheap battery imitations.

MATT WORDSWORTH: But it's not the first problem with Apple's batteries.

The company's first generation of iPod nanos, sold between late 2005 and 2006, were recalled.

They were deemed at risk of overheating as the battery aged and posed a safety risk.

That problem was traced to a single battery supplier and a manufacturing defect.

Apple did not respond to requests for comment on Friday's incident.

ELEANOR HALL: Matt Wordsworth reporting.
