Although the iPhone 3G S launched with US dollar pricing known before the keynote was over, Australian telcos are making us wait on finding out exactly what an iPhone 3G S will cost to buy outright, upgrade to or have to pay per month on a 24 month contract - should we expect any surprises?
Australian telcos are trying to recapture some of the excitement and anticipation of the last year’s iPhone 3G launch, which originally centered on whether the new iPhone would even feature 3G or not, with every potential leak of code or clue to definite 3G status hailed as new evidence the iPhone 3G was coming.
Back then there were rumours that Telstra, Vodafone and Optus would all get the iPhone, all of which turned out to be true, with Apple HQ reportedly pleased at how iPhone 3G competition has worked in Australia.
Our market provides a nice contrast to that of several other countries where a single telco has the exclusive iPhone license - sometimes maddening users who want an iPhone but not that carrier.
This time around, the rumours centered around magnetoscopes and compasses, the ultimately false rumour of a front facing camera for video calls and iChat, a higher megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, a faster processor, extra memory and more besides.

With several developers having access to the 3.0 firmware before public release, testing of several features have been possible. This includes MMS and tethering.
Have you been able to get your hands on 3.0? What features work? What features don't work yet? Which carrier are you on?

Vodafone and Optus were quick off the mark yesterday in announcing they would be selling the new faster iPhone 3G S in Australia from June 26. But neither carrier revealed pricing and Telstra maintained total silence on the new smartphone. In the USA, where the new phone goes on sale from June 19 and there is only a single carrier, pricing is US$199 for a 16GB iPhone and $299 for a 32GB model. The older 8GB model has been reduced to US$99. All involve a two-year contract with carrier AT&T. In Australia, the three major carriers compete with complex plans ranging from "zero upfront" to down payments of several hundred dollars, and hefty monthly payments, often accompanied by extra data download payments. |

Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Ltd and Vodafone plc have completed the merger of their Australian mobile communications businesses.
Hutchison and Vodafone merged their subsidiaries, Hutchison 3G Australia Pty Ltd and Vodafone Australia, to create a joint venture called Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), in which they have equal shares.
The transaction gave Hutchison the right to convert all its convertible preference shares, which the company now was doing, Sydney-based Hutchison said in a statement on Wednesday.
Hutchison owns the '3' brand and Australia's fourth-biggest mobile network while Vodafone is the third-biggest.
Editor's Note: It is unlikely this will affect any iPhone related business as the companies will continue to run their carriers seperately. It is also unlikely Three will get hold of the iPhone 3GS due to contracts with Apple in regards to planet3 and exclusivity in branding.
