The Silicon Valley Historical Association conducted an interview with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs back in 1994 while he was at NeXT. Below is a clip of Jobs talking about his legacy (via The Loop):

The short video is from the following documentary, available for purchase via download, DVD or audiobook form:

Steve Jobs: Visionary Entrepreneur is a 60-minute documentary built around a 20-minute interview of Steve Jobs in 1994 that was conducted by the Silicon Valley Historical Association.

Steve Jobs was asked to give advice to young entrepreneurs who wanted to go out and start their own businesses. He talks about risk and the willingness to fail, the role of building illegal blue boxes prior to founding Apple Computer, and his philosophy on how to approach life.

In an unexpected turn of events, the fate of Wind Mobile has become uncertain: Orascom Telecom Holding SAE — VimpelCom’s Egyptian subsidiary — has withdrawn its application to take over the struggling Canadian wireless startup, the Globe and Mail reports.

“Further to its prior announcements on the proposed acquisition of control of Wind Mobile Canada, Orascom Telecom Holding SAE announces that, after a review process and discussions with the Government of Canada, it has decided to withdraw its application for Investment Canada Act approval of its acquisition of control of Wind Mobile Canada,” Orascom said in a release.

But in an unexpected twist, the company added: “Orascom Telecom continues to be interested in consolidating its interest in Wind Mobile Canada and in working with the Government of Canada to achieve this goal.”

The announcement was followed up by a brief statement from Industry Minister Christian Paradis, but we couldn’t find any details about the possible roadblocks that ended the review process.

The Globe and Mail reported earlier, though, that VimpelCom’s bid for control — which should have taken up to six weeks — was delayed for more than eight months due to national security issues.

Orascom was the financial backer of Wind Mobile, the wireless player that has managed to grow its subscriber base to 600,000 users. The government relaxed foreign investment restrictions a year ago, and now allows 100% foreign control of wireless players retaining less than 10% of the market. With Orascom’s move Wind Mobile’s future becomes uncertain as it there is no official information about Vimpelcom to fund any additional spectrum purchases for Wind.

Anthony Lacavera has issued a statement today saying:

“As the founder and CEO of Wind Mobile, I have always been committed to creating a true independent wireless choice for Canadians. Despite today’s announcement, I will continue working with Vimpelcom toward achieving our mutual objectives.”

This sudden change in the Canadian wireless landscape just highlights the need for another powerful wireless player to step in and save both Ottawa’s ambitions for a fourth wireless player in each province, and consumers for finally getting real choices.

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes is reporting that Apple is looking to adopt ultra-thin heat pipes for iPhones, in order to boost their power efficiency. Other leading smartphone makers such as Samsung and HTC, are also showing interest in developing liquid-cooled smartphones and are expected to release such models by the end of 2013, notes the source.

According to anonymous sources inside cooling module players, the conventional graphite plus foil cooling method is no longer able to efficiently dissipate enough heat in modern smartphones. With 4G LTE becoming a more common transmission specification for latest smartphones, the heat problem is only expected to become worse. At present, major cooling module players who are developing 0.6mm heat pipes include Japan-based Furukawa Electric, Taiwan-based Chaun-Choung Technology, Auras and TaiSol Electronics.

“NEC has just recently released a new smartphone, Medias X06E, using a heat pipe. The smartphone adopts a 4.7-inch 1,280 by 720 OLED display, a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 4 processor and Android operating system, targeting mainly female consumers.

The heat pipe in NEC’s smartphone has a diameter of only 0.6mm, far smaller than ultrabook heat pipes’ 1-1.2mm, allowing the heat pipe to fit into smartphones’ limited space.”

The source however points out that since the heat pipes only have a yield rate of 30%, cooling module players players are working hard to ramp up their production.

According to a report by Patently Apple, Apple is now facing a patent infringement lawsuit from Texas based Bluebonnet Telecommunications over the use of ”Call Forwarding” feature on iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. The telecom company claims that Apple allegedly infringes upon its patent titled “Method and Apparatus for Determining the Telephony Features Assigned to a Telephone”, which previously belonged to Siemens Rolm Communications.

Bluebonnet Telecommunications notes that the patent was acquired by the company back in 1996. The filing states that Apple is indirectly infringing the patent, both as an “inducer of infringement and as a contributory infringer”. Furthermore, Apple is also responsible for a direct infringement of the patent by end-user customer by making and selling the accused smartphones.

“Apple, directly or through its customers and/or intermediaries, made, had made, used, imported, provided, supplied, distributed, sold, and/or offered for sale products and/or systems (including at least the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5) that infringed one or more claims of the 511 patent.

Apple induces end-user customers to use the accused smartphones, and specifically to use them in a manner that infringes the 511 patent. They do so by (1) providing instructions to their customers that explain how to use the features of the accused devices that are accused of infringement (specifically those features that allow call forwarding and the display of whether the feature is activated); and (2) by touting the accused features of the smartphones.

Currently, no Judge has been assigned to the patent infringement case, which was filed in the Texas Eastern District Court, Marshall Office.

Apple has officially announced it has been awarded a $30 million iPad deal from the LA Unified School District, the second largest school district in the USA. Apple says there are close to 10 million iPads in schools today.

“Education is in Apple’s DNA and we’re thrilled to work with Los Angeles Unified public schools on this major initiative as they plan to roll out iPads to every student across 47 campuses this fall,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Schools around the world have embraced the engaging and interactive quality of iPad with nearly 10 million iPads already in schools today.”

“The Board voted unanimously for Apple because iPad rated the best in quality, was the least expensive option and received the highest scoring by the review panel that included students and teachers,” said Jaime Aquino, LAUSD Deputy Superintendent of Instruction. “The vote is another step forward in the District’s plan to equip every one of its students with a device by 2014. When completed, the LAUSD will become the largest district in the nation to provide each of its students with the technology.”

Apple will supply iPads which will include the Pearson Common Core System of Courses, to be delivered via a new app. Other apps such as iWork, iLife, iTunes and other education third-party apps will be included as well. AllThingsD first reported Apple had landed the deal earlier this morning.

Update: AllThingsD says these iPads will come with a three year warranty and cost $678 each.

Merely 2 days after Edmonton based Sarah Farrell returned home from a vacation in Mexico, she got an SMS from Rogers notifying her of “excessively high” roaming charges and that she should contact Rogers for confirmation. In an interview with Go Public (via CBC News), she said “I had no idea I was going to get a $23,000 cell phone bill”.

Farrell told the source she thought she might be facing a bill for $500 or so. “It just blew my mind that they would let my cell phone bill get that high,” she said. She claims to have turned her iPhone to Airplane mode on leaving Edmonton, but turned it off during a stopover in Houston to text her mother. While she received one text from Rogers inviting her to check out their USA data plans, but never heard anything from the company during her stay in Mexico.

“My heart rate was just pounding and I felt almost sick to my stomach, because I was, like ‘that’s half a year’s salary.’”

She used the phone for about an hour every day in her hotel room to post pictures on Facebook and to send texts thinking her phone was using the hotel’s free WiFi. The next time she heard from Rogers was back in Edmonton 15 days later, when received the text telling her to call them, she said.

Rogers immediately offered to sign her up for a data plan that reduced the bill from $23,000 to $2,200, plus $225 to enrol.

Even though Farrell and Rogers eventually settled at $600, she says she’s not going to wait for Rogers “to comply with the Wireless Code” and plans to switch cell phone providers.

The white paper, “Usability vs. Security: The Everlasting Trade-Off in the Context of Apple iOS Mobile Hotspots,” signed by researchers at the University of Erlagen in Germany, reveals the default passwords are created by Apple using the word list of an open-source Scrabble crossword game.

“This list consists of around 52,500 entries, and was originated from an open-source Scrabble crossword game. Using this unof?cial Scrabble word list within of?ine dictionary attacks, we already had a 100 percent success rate of cracking any arbitrary iOS hotspot default password,” the researchers wrote.

While this shouldn’t be a problem, as it can generate enough original passwords for all iOS devices capable of tether, the main issue, which made the default passwords predictable, is that Apple uses only a small subset of the 52,500 entries.

“Only 1,842 different entries of that dictionary are taken into consideration. Consequently, any default password used within an arbitrary iOS mobile hotspot is based on one of these 1,842 different words.”

By adding powerful cracking hardware to the setup (a GPU cluster consisting of four AMD Radeon HD 7970s), the German researchers had 100% success in cracking all hotspot passwords in just 50 seconds, and 49 minutes to cycle over all 52,500 entries by cracking on a AMD Radeon HD 6990 GPU.

Assuming that this won’t be always available to hackers, they have tested available cloud computing technologies to find that the passwords can be hacked using that technology as well.

Until Apple to updates its Personal Hotspot security, you can change the default password by tapping the “Wi-Fi password” line and create your own, secure password.

Feedly has announced this morning its Normandy initiative, known as its cloud solution first announced back in mid-March, has gone live for all users. This means their service can now replace Google Reader prior to its shut down on July 1st.

Feedly cloud is now live, providing a fast and scalable infrastructure to seamlessly replace Google Reader. Feedly cloud also comes with a completely stand-alone Web version of feedly, that works with all major browsers. Finally, we are please to announce the first nine applications built on feedly cloud, that allow you to expand your feedly experience.

Feedly notes its cloud service is fast, scalable and based on open infrastructure, allowing the company to process over 25 million feeds (they say it has the horsepower to fetch 100 million) and blast through billions of articles publish daily. An upcoming API to Feedly cloud which will bring on more apps to support the service; over 200 developers have contacted the company since they first announced their plans to support an API.

Also, today marks a new standalone web interface which does not require any browser plugins over at http://cloud.feedly.com, which is excellent news. Has Feedly just won the war to take on Google Reader refugees? With cloud access to RSS feeds via the web, iOS and plenty of upcoming apps, who else can take them on?
