2015: IN-DEPTH IPHONE 6 AND 6 PLUS REVIEW [CAMERA AND VIDEO]

The iPhone has been a photographer’s smartphone favorite for many years. While if you simply compare cameras by megapixel, the iPhone 6 Plus is considerably behind its competition. However, the way in which the camera takes and processes the image as well as the sensor size both play a large role in the quality of the image. The only time megapixels is going to impact you is when you’re blowing your pictures up to extremely large sizes. As long as you’re not planning on displaying/printing the image beyond 20 X 30, the quality of the image should be just fine.

I don’t profess to be a professional photographer, so I’m going to defer the camera comparison over to our professional photography friends at improvephotography.com. In their testing they found that in many ways the iPhone 6 Plus’s camera actually performed worse than the iPhone 5S. They mention that contrast and burst shots performed considerably better on the iPhone 5S.

However, in the iPhone 6 Plus’s favor, it performed better in low light settings. The phase detection auto-focus also delivered clearer more focused photos; especially in very noisy environments.

Overall, I’ve been pleased with the quality of the pictures that I have taken with the iPhone 6 Plus. While it is definitely no DSLR replacement, it gets the job done and gives you an accessible camera anytime anywhere. Below are a few examples of photos that we took with the iPhone 6 Plus:

The front facing camera is only 1.2 megapixels and shoots in HD at 720P. While far from the best front-facing camera on a smartphone, it gets the job done for video chatting and low res selfies.

Video on the device also comes with some bells and whistles. While shooting in HD is nothing new for iPhones, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both shoot at 60 frames per second which equates to smoother video. Apple’s Focus Pixel technology works surprisingly well while changing from one subject to another and remaining in focus. When shifting quickly from one subject to another, there are fractions of a second in which you will notice the camera refocusing, but it performs significantly better than my DSLR’s ability to autofocus while shooting video.

The new slow motion video mode is also an extremely cool new feature. Having the ability to capture video at 240 frames per second allows you to see an entirely new world. While Samsung has had this feature since the Galaxy S4, the execution of slow motion mode on the iPhone is a much better experience. For one, after shooting video, you can choose what portion of the clip you want to show in slow motion. Additionally, when the phone is shifting into slow motion it shifts quickly but gradually giving it an almost Hollywood movie slow-down slow motion effect. Also, the iPhone 6’s slow motion video also captures sound; something the Galaxy S4 nor S5 capture when shooting in slow motion.

You’ll notice, when using this mode, resolution does go down to 720P. Also, it doesn’t perform well in low-light settings. Our NoPhone Gymnastics video was shot using the iPhone 6 Plus and you can see some minor flickering while playing back the video in slow motion.

While a higher megapixel camera would have been welcomed, the camera performs really well in terms of taking pictures and videos with a variety of different features and modes to keep your creativity on steroids.

The major spec upgrades include the CPU, GPU, battery life, and the addition of the NFC chip. The CPU inside of both models of the iPhone 6 utilize Apple’s A8 chipset. This is a step up from the A7 chip used in the iPhone 5S and provides an approximate 25% boost in performance. Also, the GPU is also upgraded from the PowerVR G6430 to the PowerVR G6450 which provides an approximate 50% boost in graphical processing power. This means games should look and run better. However, some testing has shown that most of this “extra” power is exhausted from outputting to higher resolution screens; especially on the iPhone 6 Plus.

Disappointingly, there was not an upgrade to the RAM of the device. Utilizing only 1 GB of RAM puts the iPhone 6 in line with a low-end Android Phones. However, you’ll notice that the device is silky smooth in terms of performance. This is for a number of reasons. For one, iOS is optimized for the specs of the devices. Android has so many different devices on the market that it is challenging to optimize for every device. Also, iOS requires less power to operate. While you may have a lower powered lawn mower, the fact that you’re a slim 140 pound man as opposed to a 350 pound wrestler is going to give you better performance than you would expect from only 1 GB of RAM.

Battery life has also seen a huge improvement! I can often get nearly 2 days out of my iPhone 6 Plus without a charge with relatively heavy use. Some days I will just leave the screen on for extended periods of time while working to monitor various things. Even when leaving the screen on for hours at a time, the battery always gives me at least a full day’s worth of use.

One of my favorite new pieces of hardware on the device is the fingerprint scanner. While I largely considered it a gimmick on past phones and computers due to being a clumsy experience, the finger-print scanner works so well that it’s become one of my favorite features of the iPhone 6 Plus. It is surprisingly accurate and zippy. If you power on your phone with your thumb, a simple half second linger on the button will take you past the lockscreen which is surprisingly more convenient than you would thing. Also, being able to pay for apps and games in the app store by scanning your fingerprint instead of typing your password is extremely convenient as well. I did notice that any moisture on your finger would inhibit the device from being able to read your fingerprint. If you have clammy hands, don’t look forward to using the fingerprint scanner.

Apple made some drastic changes that shocked many when they revealed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Deviating from what once was adamancy regarding have the perfect screen size for one-handed use, the company now offers two different iPhone models; both of which are larger than their predecessor. The iPhone 6 Plus is the larger of the two being technically classified as a phablet. While the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been taking record amounts of market share from Android this time around, how does the phone actually stand up against its competition? Read on to find out our opinions on the matter.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY:

Apple has been notorious for their attention to detail and cutting edge design in their smartphones. The design of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are drastically different from their predecessor. One of the major changes in design are the screen sizes. The iPhone 5S had a measly 4 inch screen. The iPhone 6 has a stunning 4.7 inch Retina Display, bringing it in-line with many of the mainstream Android devices on the market. The iPhone 6 Plus is even larger with a 5.5 inch HD Retina Display.

The screens on both devices are bright, crisp, and stunning. Being a Retina Display is defined by the pixel density going beyond what is visible to the naked eye. This equates to an incredibly crisp and vibrant experience. It is worth noting that the iPhone 6 is 1334 by 750 pixels leaving the pixel density at 326 pixels per inch. The iPhone 6 Plus has an even higher density of pixels at 401 PPI with its 1920 by 1080 screen. The resolution of the iPhone 6 Plus has the same number of pixels as non-4K HD televisions, which is pretty incredible for a simple 5.5 inch screen. The size of the iPhone 6 Plus screen is great for watching movies, viewing photos, and zooming in on those imperfections in your selfies.

One of the big questions on everyone’s mind is how do the phones feel compared to previous models considering their changes in size. The iPhone 6 is the perfect size. It fits well in your hand and is finally a decent size screen without being overly bulky. I wish I could say the same about the iPhone 6 Plus. The 6 Plus is just beyond the realm of comfort in the size department (and no I don’t have Mary Poppins hands thank you very much) It’s slightly smaller than the Galaxy Note 4, so if you’re comfortable with the size of that phone, you should be comfortable with the iPhone 6 Plus. The device is also extremely slippery. Between the slipperiness of the device and its size, using it in one hand is not a recommendable experience; especially if you have small hands. It does, however, fit into jeans pockets. I had multiple people ask me to show them how it fit in my pocket out of curiosity. While definitely a pocket-full, it all fits. Just don’t wear skinny jeans and you’ll be fine.

As far as BendGate is concerned, or the iPhone 6 Plus bending during regular use; we can confirm that those reports were false. Not only have I not seen any bending with regular use, but even when applying considerable pressure to the sides of the phone I did not see any flex. If this were Mythbusters, consider that myth BUSTED.

Other major design changes to the phones include a massive overhaul to the chassis/body of the device. What once were straight lined bezeled edges are now smooth curves. Aside from the edges of the buttons and camera lens, there is not a jagged edge on this phone. This makes a much safer experience when you feel the need to huck your phone at your friend’s head just for kicks.

The sensors and buttons are all, for the most part, in the places when you would expect them from previous models. The camera lens does protrude from the back of the device. While this is likely required to get the entire camera and lens to fit in an even thinner phone than its predecessor, it does make you uncomfortable when setting the phone down on its back. I’m pleased to report that the lens on the camera is quite durable and has yet to receive any scratches from my setting it on its back in my 2 months with the device.

Overall, the design changes to the device are welcome and needed changes. The market seems to agree that bigger is better despite some of its drawbacks. The iPhone 6 Plus is a bit beyond the size of comfort, but its dazzlingly large screen largely make up for it as long as you don’t mind using both hands with the device.

1. Asphalt 8: AirborneThe Asphalt series has always been a looker, jam-packed with spiffy, speedy cars that elicit oohs and aahs from onlookers. Gameloft not only polished up the graphics with its Metal update, but it also tossed in a Metal-exclusive season with three times as many opponents as any other Asphalt game.

2. Epic Zen GardenOK, this isn’t a game, technically. It’s more of a tech demo. But hot damn, is it a pretty one! The developer behind Gears of War and Unreal put together this soothing experience (complete with a koi pond and sand raking) using the same engine that’s being used to powerFable Legends on the Xbox One.

3. Monument ValleyIf M.C. Escher made a video game, this would be it. This winding, brain-warping puzzler routinely ignores gravity and the laws of physics, creating a dreamworld that is positively surreal and drop-dead gorgeous.

4. Plunder PiratesThis free-to-play title from the company behind Angry Birds is cartoonishly goofy, letting you recruit a pirate army and sail your galleon into battle against other players. If you’re familiar with games like Clash of Clans, you get the gist.

5. Monster Hunter Freedom UniteYou want a big game? They don’t come much bigger than this. Capcom’s 2008 PSP and PS Vita game made a big splash in the iOS world with a seemingly endless supply of missions and monsters. Perfect for the bigger screen of the iPhone 6 Plus, but be sure to also grab a Bluetooth gamepad for this one.

6. Valiant Hearts: The Great WarIt’s not Metal-optimized, but this World War II-themed puzzle/adventure game makes up for that with a terrific, emotional story. It’s just as good as the console version that came out earlier this year — maybe better, since you can take it wherever you go.

7. 80 DaysA steampunk twist on a Jules Verne tale? Sign us up! Try to recreate Phileas Fogg’s journey around the globe, racing the clock and other players. It’s interactive fiction at its very best.

8. Modern Combat 5: BlackoutYeah, it’s a Call of Duty clone, but it’s not a bad one. And with its Metal optimization, you’ll get bigger, better explosions and some seriously impressive weather effects, including a very cool heat haze. Mobile warfare has never been so pretty.

9. The Room TwoLike its predecessor, this app is atmospheric and brooding. It’s a bit like the classic PC game MYST, featuring challenging puzzles and crisp, beautiful graphics.

10. VaingloryIt won’t be out until next month, but make a mental note to download this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game ASAP. Apple believed in it enough to make it the gaming focal point of the iPhone 6 announcement. That’s a serious endorsement.

Apple launches guide for moving content from your Android phone to iPhone.

Apple launched a web page on Tuesday guiding new iPhone users on how to move their content from an Android device, just in time for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus’ launch on Friday.

The webpage is a first for Apple, as it’s usually Android OEMs who have posted similar guides in the past taking jabs at the competition – aka Apple. However with the larger screens on the new iPhones gunning to take market share from Google, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and others, it’s now Apple’s turn.

The web page offers tips for moving mail, contacts, and calendars, photos and videos, music, books and PDFs, documents, and apps. It’s relatively self-explanatory for an existing iPhone user, but for a new user coming from Android, it could potentially be quite helpful. For example, it shows the steps on adding a new email account, moving photos and videos using an app or a computer with iTunes, moving documents to iCloud, and more.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in early September, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus will prompt “the mother of all upgrades.” He expects many Android users to look at switching to iPhone, adding the phones are “appreciably better in every single way.”

As for apps, the key to smartphones these days, Apple doesn’t offer some magic way of getting apps from your Android phone to your iPhone without spending a little money. “You’ll probably find the apps you’re already using on the App Store. Go to the App Store, search for the apps you have now, and install them. Then sign in with your user name and password.”

Record Four Million Orders Of IPhones On Day One

Apple had more than four million advance orders of its new, larger iPhones in the first 24 hours, exceeding its initial supply, the company said Monday.The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be delivered to customers starting Friday and throughout September, but many won't be delivered until October, Apple said. Phones will still be available Friday on a walk-in basis at Apple retail stores and from various wireless carriers and authorised Apple resellers.Apple's website had intermittent outages last Friday because of heavy traffic as orders began online. The company said the four million orders set a new 24-hour record, beating the two million orders in 2012. That was for the iPhone 5, the previous time Apple increased the iPhone's screen size.

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple plans to launch two larger iPhones this year and will likely avoid using the plastic exterior design of last year’s 5c model, which has not sold as well as expected, theWall Street Journal reported today.

Apple is developing an iPhone with a display larger than 4.5 inches measured diagonally, and a second version with a screen bigger than 5 inches, the newspaper said.

Both new models are expected to feature metal casings similar to what is used on the current iPhone 5s. Apple expected to scrap the plastic exterior used in the iPhone 5c, the WSJ added, citing unidentified people familiar with the situation.

The phones, expected in the second half of 2014, won’t include a curved display, a feature introduced by rivals including Samsung Electronics. The smaller of the two models is being prepared for mass production; the larger-screen version is still in preliminary development, the WSJ reported.

Apple spokeswoman Teresa Brewer declined to comment.

So far, Apple’s largest phone has sported a 4-inch display. However, Samsung and other rivals have made bigger phones, including those called phablets, that have sold well, particularly in Asia, where Apple is searching for growth.

Apple just recently wrapped up a big year of releases and 2014 could be even bigger. 2013 marked the first time the tech giant ever released more than one phone at once when the iPhone 5s and 5c were released in September. Many believe that the release of two iPhones at once could foreshadow things to come. The company may be releasing two new iPhones again this year, but rumors indicate that they could come on separate dates. The one thing that most people are agreeing on is that there is a solid chance that the iPhone gets bigger yet again.

Another big moment in 2013 for Apple was the release of the iPad Mini with Retina Screen, which was a move people had been anticipating for quite some time after other companies already started to produce better screens than Apple was.
Although Apple came out with a number of new devices in 2013, it also came out with a revolutionary and unique operating system in iOS 7. For the first time in iOS history, the design and interface of the phone was completely changed around.

According to a number of sources, Apple is working on patenting a sonar technology. This will include a proximity detection feature in the iPhone 6. The U.S. patent office released an application from Apple. The company passed the application early in December. According to the document, the technology focuses on the integration of audio sensors into the display of the device.

The technology will allow the iPhone 6 to use passive sonar to identify sound waves coming from objects. This will let people use the sonar to do a range of functions. For example, switching off automatically when near the face or mapping out a room.

The sonar technology makes it possible for the iPhone 6 to determine whether it is about to fall or hit an object. It can switch off important functions or applications. Other reported uses include giving users precise walking directions when in unfamiliar regions or suggesting dangerous areas when detected. The sonar technology offers endless of possibilities for the iPhone 6. It will let Apple turn the device into one of the most powerful smartphones around.

There are also reports saying that Apple's iPhone 6 will feature a round display. More than the curved display, it appears the tech giant will focus more on a round display for better experience. There are no confirmations from Apple yet but the curved and bend display seems to be the next trend for smartphones. Some analysts agree Apple will follow the trend, others are not so convinced.

With the release of the A7 chip with the iPhone 5s, analysts think that Apple will move forward to an A8 chip for the next flagship phone. If this will happen, the new iPhone will boast more power. Release date is expected around September or October. Based from the last three years, Apple has been releasing new phones around this time.

People will have to wait for official confirmation from Apple.

Powerless: Fake iPhone charger and cable. Martin Rowe -January 06, 2014

In July 2013, I rode the train from Boston to New York City. As soon as I sat down on the train, I reached into my backpack for a charger. Horror struck when I realized that I'd left three chargers at home. The chargers were for an iPad, iPhone, and a Samsung phone. My wife also has a Samsung phone that uses the same micro-USB connector so I knew I could use her charger, but what about the iThings?

"No problem," I thought. I'll be in Midtown Manhattan. There's an electronics store on every block along 7^th Ave." Now, I knew that there was no way that any of these stores would sell genuine Apple chargers and cables. I also knew from experience the problems with fake Apple cables. Still, I just needed a charger and cable to get me through the weekend. How bad could that be?

Real bad.

After going into three stores, I realized that they all sold the same knockoff cables and chargers. So, the only difference was price. One store had an iPhone 4 charger priced at $40, but I had already seen the same knockoff for less in other stores. As I started to leave, the salesman said, "Half price if you pay cash?" This is very common in NYC where stores often give huge discounts and don't charge sales tax for cash purchases. Not only do they save on credit-card fees, but the cash likely goes right in someone's pocket, thus avoiding taxes.

Knowing that the charger and cable were anything but genuine, I insisted on testing them with my iPad. Connecting them to the iPad, I saw it start to charge. So, at least I had a charger, or so I thought.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I connected the knockoff to my iPhone. It refused to charge; same for the iPad. Thinking the outlet might not have power, I tried another. Still, neither charged. Unfortunately, my wife's charger is an integrated unit so I couldn't plug in the cable to a USB port and tell if the problem was the charger or the cable. At that point, I completely powered down both iThings to save battery charge.

The next day, we visited some friends who had a iPad. There, I discovered that the charger had failed, yet I clearly recalled seeing the iPad charging in the store.

Upon inspection, I found some light scratches on the charger unit. It was probably returned and resold -- to me. I looked at the cable and noted that at the USB end, there was essentially no strain relief. The cable sleeve slid in easily. On a real cable, it would be nice and tight. I decided to put some electrical tape around the cable to provide some strain relief later. The 30-pin connect is a tight fit compared to a genuine Apple connector.

So, I charged both the iPhone and iPad with my friend's charger and powered them down that night. That left enough power to use both on the train home the next day.

Back at home, I wanted to see if the knockoff cable would charge and sync my iPad when connected to a computer. Here was something I'd never seen before. Using Windows Explorer, I found my photos. A few seconds later, the thumbnails were replaced by hard-drive icons in one of the photo folders. See the image below.

To avoid accidentally using the failed iPhone charger, I wrote "NYC" in permanent marker on the case. I may try opening it to see what's inside. It might be an easy fix. See the next page for a teardown of the fake charger.

Bloomberg For iPhone Updated With Financial News And Watchlist Enhancements

Bloomberg, the official iPhone app of the well-known financial news company of the same name, has just received another major update.

As you might expect from its name, the Bloomberg app provides breaking news and top stories that help you keep on top of what’s happening in the world of finance.

Released way back in 2008, the app was updated early last October to version 3.0 with a new design and various other improvements. Now, it has been updated to version 3.1 with several additional enhancements.

Among these enhancements is the ability to disable thumbnail images on news headlines, which you can do in the app’s settings section. Also, there’s the added ability to tweet a paragraph from a story — or at least a portion of a paragraph, considering Twitter’s 140-character limit. Just long-press on a paragraph and tap Tweet on the contextual menu to tweet the paragraph.

China Deal Gives Apple Big Market to Court

On Sunday, Apple and China Mobile announced a deal to bring the iPhone to the Chinese carrier, the largest wireless network in the world, on Jan. 17.Just about any way you slice it, 763 million customers is a huge potential pie.

An agreement with China Mobile could, at least initially, give Apple a big lift into the vast Chinese market, analysts say, increasing its worldwide sales.

“China is an extremely important market for Apple and our partnership with China Mobile presents us the opportunity to bring iPhone to the customers of the world’s largest network,” Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said in a statement.

But the company will face many challenges in capturing the Chinese market.

While Apple’s smartphones are dominant in the United States and a major player in Europe, the company has struggled to gain much traction in China, where phones using Google’s Android operating system dominate for several reasons, particularly price.

In China, some smartphone makers, like Huawei, Coolpad and ZTE, offer Android phones for less than $100, while Apple lists the iPhone 5C at $739, and the 5S at $871. Apple said that it would reveal pricing of the iPhones for China Mobile customers at a later date.

Apple is the No. 5 smartphone player in the country, behind Samsung and the Chinese handset makers Huawei, Lenovo and Yulong.

The slow sales of the iPhone in China are reflected in the overall shrinkage of the company’s share of the global smartphone market — to 12.1 percent in the third quarter, down from 14.3 percent in the same period a year ago, according to the market research firm Gartner. Meanwhile, Lenovo, the No. 3 player, which sells the vast majority of its smartphones in China, had 5.1 percent of the global market in the third quarter, from 4.1 percent a year ago. Samsung’s global share remained flat at 32.1 percent.

Still, analysts were optimistic that Apple would sell a lot of phones through China Mobile, though they offered wide-ranging estimates for how many more. William V. Power, an analyst for Robert W. Baird & Company, said Apple could sell as many as 30 million more iPhones in 2014, while Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein research, offered a more conservative estimate of 15 million iPhones.

Apple sold about 23 million iPhones in China over the last year, Mr. Sacconaghi said.

Apple has long pursued a deal with China Mobile. The carrier showed signs of warming up to Apple only after it began losing customers to competitors that offered the iPhone. The No. 2 carrier in the country, China Unicom, and China Telecom, No. 3, have had longstanding arrangements with Apple, but they are much smaller than China Mobile.

In addition to cost, another reason Android phones have proved so popular in China is that, unlike in the rest of the world, there is a wider variety of mobile applications for Android phones than for iPhones. While the Google Play store is not officially available in China, Android users can turn to dozens of alternative app stores offering licensed and pirated applications.

Analysts expect the vast majority of smartphone growth in China to occur at the lower end of the market, as the phones become more widely available to lower-income consumers in smaller cities and rural areas. Those consumers will presumably be more attracted to the lower-cost Android phones.

Also, in China fewer handsets are subsidized by mobile carriers than in the United States, Europe or Japan. More than two-thirds of Chinese phones are sold unsubsidized by third-party retailers, often over the Internet.

Chinese operators are reluctant to subsidize phones too heavily in a market where many customers are happy with smartphones that cost under $100. Both China Unicom and China Telecom have been cutting back on subsidies.

Apple surprised some analysts in September with its aggressive pricing of the iPhone 5C, which has fewer features and costs less than the 5S, though the two were introduced on the same day. The company had been expected to try to appeal to Chinese customers with the lower price, but the 5C was introduced at a level that remains high in China.

Analysts say Apple may have to cut the price further, or introduce another, less expensive model if it hopes to broaden its appeal in China.

The cost-consciousness of Chinese consumers extends to their choice of mobile networks. Only 176 million China Mobile customers, less than a quarter of the total, subscribe to the company’s high-speed wireless data service, using 3G technology.

Apple and China Mobile announced their partnership a few days after China Mobile introduced an upgrade to a newer, faster system — 4G — for parts of its network. The existing 3G subscribers, not the overall customer base, will provide the main target audience for the new phones and services.

The deal with China Mobile has been rumored for a while, and potential customers for the iPhone are already lining up. Among them is Wang Xiaocong, who works in the marketing department of a law firm in Beijing. Ms. Wang, 31, said she had a BlackBerry for work and a Samsung smartphone for personal use, but was looking for something different.

“I am not a big fan of high-tech products,” Ms. Wang said. “But I would love to have an iPhone next time, with the 4G network, maybe next year. It looks very fashionable.”
