If you’re anything like me, you wonder (on a daily basis) why anyone would pay for an iPhone fart app. Well apparently they would (as evidenced by the unbelievable number of fart apps in the app store) so here are

The Top Ten Reasons to Pay for an iPhone Fart App

10. The smell of your own farts has begun to make you nauseous but you miss the “auditory goodness” of your own flatulence.

9. You just won the lottery and the first thought that comes into your mind is “I need to immediately fill up my iPhone with fart apps”.

8. There’s no better theft protection for your iPhone than the “Security Fart”. (No joke — there is such a thing — check it out here)

7. You’re embarking upon a career as a Flatulence Performance Artist and you can write off iFart as a business expense.

6. Concerned you just sharted, you rush to compare the sound to what you just heard.

5. The quality of the fart sounds in the free apps “just don’t cut it anymore”.

4. Sometimes, you just gotta’ splurge.

3. In an attempt to keep up with North Korea, you decide to begin your own nuclear testing program.

2. Life cannot continue until you find out what a “Brown Mosquito” fart sounds like.

1. Farts are Funny

After a long and storied journey, the iPhone App Eucalyptus is finally available on the App Store!

For those who haven’t been following the saga, Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decided that the Eucalyptus reader app should not be included in the App store because of offensive content. To quote Apple:

“Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple’s reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.”

The obscene, pornographic content that Apple is talking about is the text from a translation of The Kama Sutra. While the position that this book is “pornographic” is certainly debatable, Apple’s position is not.

Rejecting Eucalyptus is just wrong.

As the author of Eucalyptus explained on his blog, Eucalyptus is just an interface to search and view the books available on the Project Gutenberg website, a collection of over 28,000 free books — including The Kama Sutra. This book can be viewed on the iPhone in many other apps that are available in the App Store and even Safari!!

Fortunately, Apple has seen the errors of their ways and made Eucalyptus available on the App Store. While I have yet to test it out, it does look amazing:

Turning the page in Eucalyptus

All controversy aside, Eucalyptus looks like the eBook reader we’ve all been waiting for and it comes with access to 28,000 books as a bonus!

So you’ve just gotten your highest score ever in FieldRunners and you want to take a screenshot on your iphone to post it to your blog and prove to the world that you are the Supreme King of all FieldRunners Generals. But how do you take a screenshot on your iPhone and get it on your computer? Before version 2.0 of the iPhone OS, there was no really easy way to do this. Since the 2.0 upgrade, Apple has built this functionality directly into the iPhone OS — Click the Read More link below for the full guide on how to take a screenshot on your iPhone, step by step:

Bring up the screen on your iPhone that you want to take a screenshot of — for example, I created a test note. If it really is FieldRunners (or another game) that you want to use, I suggest you pause the game first.

Sample iPhone Screenshot -- click for the full size image

Hold down the Home button (the round button on the bottom front of the iPhone) and then press the Sleep button (the button on the right side of the top edge of the iPhone). Release both buttons at the same time and the iPhone screen will flash white. At this point, the screenshot has been taken and it is in your Camera Roll.

On your iPhone, go back to the Home screen and then tap Photos. Tap the Camera Roll album — the screenshot you just took should be the last photo in this album. Tap the screenshot to make it full screen and then tap the Email Photo icon in the lower left of the screen. This will bring up 3 buttons — tap the button that says “Email Photo” — this will open a new email with the screenshot image attached to the email.

iPhone Screenshot with Buttons -- Click for full size image

Address the email to your one email address and send the email. You can now open the email on your computer and save the screenshot image to your hard drive.

Now that you’ve got it on your computer, you can use it the same as any other image — post it to your blog or website, set it as your desktop background, or even email proof of that amazing score in FieldRunners to all your friends!!

We all eagerly awaited the 2.0 software and Exchange Activesync push email. And while it delivers exactly what it promises (I actually get my exchange email on my iPhone before Outlook!!) it of course comes at a price — a siginifically shorter iPhone battery life. By significantly, I mean a huge amount – with push turned off, I can often go 2-3 days on a single charge. Turn on push, and I’m down to less than a day with normal usage.

But there is a solution — Turn Off Push!! To do this, from the home screen on your iPhone tap on Settings. Then, from the Settings screen, tap on Fetch New Data. At the top of the next screen there will be an entry called Push – tap it to change the setting to off. Next, below on the same screen will be a block of settings that read “Every 15 Minutes“, “Every 30 Minutes“, “Hourly“, and “Manually“. These settings will control how often your iPhone will check for new email. Tap the setting to set how often you want to check for new email. If you really want to save battery life, use the setting marked “Manually” and your iPhone will only check for new email when you actually go into your email account on the phone.

Do you really need to get your new email more often than every 15 minutes? I know I don’t!! I’ll trade 15 minutes of “email time” for another 1-2 days battery life anytime.

In true holiday spirit, many paid apps on the iTunes App Store are free this weekend starting on Friday. Everything from games (Lightning Tap) to TV guides (What’s on TV?) are on sale for at least Friday and many will be available for free through Monday.

While some of these apps are probably not that good and should always be free (or not even on the apps store in the first place!) there are sure to be some gems hidden amongst the crap. Besides, it costs nothing more than the time to download the app and if it’s garbage, you can just delete it — no money lost!

To find all the free apps, check the list over at App Shopper but be careful — some of the apps on their list that say they are free may not still be on sale. Double check the price on the iTunes App Store before you purchase — if it doesn’t say it’s free on the apps store then you will be charged!!
