Livestock fattening innovation in Ethiopia - the Metema story

This video documents how a 2005 alliance between the local government office of agriculture, the IPMS project, and local livestock farmers and traders in western Ethiopia took advantage of livestock market opportunities in neighbouring Sudan. Through dialogue with local actors, the team worked out a "new way of doing business." This brought knowledge to farmers, connected them to animal health providers, encouraged shopkeepers to sell feed for fattening, and reached out to farmers through community institutions like the church. What went right in Metema? First, farmers were empowered through sharing of new ideas - on fattening and on market opportunities. Second, the team addressed issues beyond production, reaching out to input providers and others. Third, the team worked with farmers and input suppliers who volunteered to try fattening, with their own resources. Some of the critical building blocks to sustain and scale out this approach include: Effective partnerships among all actors in the value chain; appropriate knowledge for farmers on many topics; stronger input supply systems; stronger support systems for farmers to get hold of services; market information

IPMS project shares monitoring and evaluation approach with Ethiopian Agricultural Growth Program

In November 2011, Berhanu Gebremedhin of ILRI/IPMS Project trained staff of the Ethiopian Agricultural Growth Program (AGP) on results-based monitoring and evaluation (November 28-December 3 2011 in Debrezeit Ethiopia). He outlined the main topics covered in the workshop: An introduction to results-based M&E; the development of a logic model and performance framework of a project; the performance measurement framework; the need for participatory M&E with stakeholders and how to do this; the selection and specification of indicators; data collection and analysis; the production and dissemination of of timely M&E reports; and the institutionalization of M&E and M&E units. He concludes by emphasizing the focus of the training- it was a training of trainers event - the participants are expected to train on their colleagues; they are also expected to lead M&E efforts at the regional level - guiding implementation as well as writing reports.

No bees no honey: Apiculture value chain experiences in Ethiopia

‘No bees no honey’ presents the experience of the Improving Productivity and Market Success (IPMS) project on apiculture value chain development in Bure distrct, Amhara, Ethiopia. IPMS together with the woreda office of agriculture, farmers, input suppliers and other stakeholders worked in the district to produce high quality honey by using integrated commodity development approach. On this video, all successive value addition activities and processes such as production, where queen splitting was a major intervention, input supply, and marketing interventions made by the project are highlighted.

IPMS in partnership with the district office of agriculture, Melkassa research center and other partners, introduced new varieties of these fruits, which are sweeter, fleshy, faster growing and more demanded in the market, by using grafting technique. Experience of farmers who manage own fruit nursery of the improved varieties and the positive impact that it brought on their livelihood is presented.

Speaking at the opening of the National dairy forum on 23 November 2010, Berhanu G/Medhin said that the value chain concept is quite popular and many development and research projects are following this approach. He emphasized that when we do research or development interventions we need to carefully analyze the value chain on the particular commodity and also try to identify the priority problems along the value chain, mapping the innovation system for the particular problem.

Ethiopia national dairy forum aims to enhance sector coordination and leadership

Speaking at the National dairy forum on 23 November 2010, Azage Tegegne said that the government of Ethiopia and a number of non-governmental and international organizations and private sector actors are working together in various dairy development activities. However all these efforts lack coordination and appropriate leadership. Hence, we organized this national dairy forum. The focus of the forum was to exchange views and experiences on dairy development in Ethiopia and to map out its future directions.

Improving the market success of Ethiopian farmers in dairy value chains

Speaking at the opening of the National dairy forum on 23 November 2010, improving market success of Ethiopian farmers (IPMS) Project Manager, Dirk Hoekstra presented some IPMS experiences in the research for development in the dairy value chain. He said that, if I need to stress a few points, we should start paying attention not on a single part of the dairy value chain (fluid milk market) which you see on urban centers only. We should also pay attention on the dairy value chain in the rural areas where dairy animals are kept both for dairy purposes and in particular for butter and meat. In conclusion he said that development should pay attention to different systems and organizational and institutional interventions.

In this video (in Amharic) recorded at the March 31 2011 Agricultural Value Chain exhibition, he explains how he learned about urea molases as an animal feed from ILRI/IPMS. He explains that urea molasses is made from urea, oil cake, wheat bran, mineral soil and molasses which helps to fatten animals, increase milk production of a cow and can help cattle resist drought.
