The iPod touch has only one dedicated button at its disposal, just as the iPhone, with one function to return to the main menu or in case screen deactivation is on, to activate the screen of the Apple iPod in combination with a sliding movement on the touch screen. The touch screen works flawless and fast. The main menu shows eleven icons, four of which are displayed for playing music, videos, pictures and iTunes. The remaining seven icons are for the Safari web browser, YouTube videos, agenda, contacts, clock, calculator and general settings. Furthermore the battery indicator is shown on the screen in the main menu. The time is rendered in every menu, in other words, it is always visible.

Unfortunately the iPod touch has not been equipped with a digital camera. It is possible however to synchronize the photos from your computer with the iPod touch through iTunes. Once the pictures are on your iPod you can watch them by touching the Pictures icon in the main menu on the iPod screen. Clicking on a picture will make it appear in a medium size in the centre of the screen. And also here, just as is the case when playing music, the picture is automatically rotated when turning your iPod into a different direction. If you turn the iPod one quarter, the picture will be rendered on full screen. The icon that tells you the number of the picture and a second one that lets you go on to the next or previous picture are still visible and available.

When the touch screen is touched once again on a spot clear from icons, the photo will be rendered fully. Instead of having to use the icons to go to the next or previous picture you can slide your finger to the left or the right on the touch screen and the next or previous picture will appear. An additional amazing function on the iPod touch is zooming in on pictures. Not so much amazing that this function is offered but more so because of the way it is carried out. You have to place your fingers on the exact spot you want to zoom in on and then move them apart. After that you can move to the right or the left sliding on the screen. If you want to go back to full screen and undo the zooming, it is simple; just double-click on the touch screen.

Have you ever had the feeling that the world Beethoven was 'talking' about in his music just doesn't exist anymore? Have you ever watched a movie that used Schubert as a soundtrack and entertained the thought that Schubert didn't even know what a soundtrack is? If you have, you will be able to relate to the tension and incongruity between modernity and classical music that columnist Ivan Hewett describes in a recent article for the Telegraph.

Nor can it [classical music] be plucked from cyberspace, because it doesn't come from there. It comes from a real space. OK, I know my recording of a Bach cantata was made in a studio, but the fact that we can hear 30 people all doing something together immediately evokes the real, social space the music originally took place in.

But that's not the space we live in now. We prefer the solitary, nomadic space of trains and airport lounges, which seem to be the places we feel most at home. And we like the space of privacy and home, the one conjured in all those home makeover programmes.

Have you ever daydreamed about driving Mozart around in a car, showing him the cities, the bridges, airplanes, skyscrapers etc., and just when his mind was swimming with the foreignness of it all, you pop on a CD with his music playing?

Classical music fits badly into the Walkman world, and even worse into the iPod world. For one thing, the technology doesn't suit it very well. Try listening to an opera on an iPod, and you'll discover the software puts a gap between tracks, which is pretty annoying if you're trying to enjoy the dramatic flow of an opera scene. And just try searching for your favourite Beethoven trio on iTunes, which is designed to search for "song" and "artist", and copes badly with keys and opus numbers.

Perhaps that is why classical music is so attractive; it opens a portal into the idealized version of a world that is no longer to be found. When we listen to it, we have the best of both worlds - a temporary escape into the beauty of the music, and a guaranteed return to the private mobility of our modern world, with all its challenges and perks.

Classical music doesn't belong in this private, mobile space. It was created in a space that's vanishing - the public space of churches, libraries, debating societies and concerts. That's the real reason it's so hard to listen to it on a Walkman or an iPod.

4 Reasons Zune will Flop
Today the Zune player from Windows will explode from the shelves of 30,000 stores around the country, to what I anticipate will be the collective yawn of a “me-to” device weary public.Will Microsoft spend billions pushing the Zune player on the market? Yes.Will they make a huge splash in the press? Yes.Will they put out a press release within a week and tout how many Zune’s they’ve foisted off on unsuspecting luddites sold? Yes.Will it fail get any real traction and have a minimal impact on the market for digital players? Yes!Now some might say I’m simply playa hatin’ (excuse the pun and the misappropriated vernacular) the on the Zune, so I’ve put together this list of the top 10 reasons the Zune will fail in the market.
1) Who you Gonna Zune with the Chicken or the Egg?The main feature of the Zune, it’s supposed iPod killing feature, is its ability to share music between devices. At today’s press conference and launch event in Seattle, Bill Gates demonstrated this feature by sharing music with John Richards, a morning show host at a community radio station in Seattle (selected for his apparent street creed). Ignoring the DRM for a second, this sounds like a great feature if you imagine all your friend walking around with Zune’s and you can pass music back and forth. Now ask yourself how many of your friends have a Zune? How many are likely to buy a Zune? How many strangers you pass on the street have a Zune? Exactly, in order for the sharing feature to be worth anything lots of people need to have a Zune and in order for lots of people to have a Zune its main feature would have to be worth something. Chicken or egg, you choose.
2) Its still way to expensive!The original price of the Zune was $284, then Apple announced that its newest 30GB iPod model would retail for $249 and MS was thrown into a flutter trying to recalculate just how big of a loss they were willing to take. Apparently the answer had lots of zeros because they came right back with a price that, unfortunately just matched Apple’s. lets say your in the store comparing two products with the same sticker price; on one hand you have a 5th generation Apple product that is a pop culture icon and on the other you have a first generation Microsoft product thats heavier, with a shorter battery life, a weird name and draconian DRM limitations. Which would you buy? Me to. Microsoft made the rookie mistake of thinking price was the same as cost and they didnt give me a reason to choose the Zune over the iPod.
3) Music store pricing is to complexThe Zune Marketplace is where you go to trade in your hard earned cash for Microsoft’s version of Linden dollars, called Zune Points. James Stoup over at Apple Matters has a great dissection of the Zune Marketplace and the hair brained scheme to make the Zune music purchases seems less expensive then iTunes purchases. Pricing shenanigans aside, the additional steps of having to buy “points”, in $5 dollar increments, in order to then go ahead and buy music is likely to be a deal killer for many. Zune marketplace tunes are inexplicably priced at 79 points. So how many songs does that get me? Lets see $5 gets me 400 points, which if I divide by 79 I get… a headache and join the hundreds of other frustrated Zune users and toss the thing out a window.
4) It shares music! Thats bad right?The music industry has spent the last 5 years “educating” people about the evils of file sharing. Lesson 1: sue the technology companies enabling sharing. Lesson 2: sue anyone, from computer-less grandmothers to 12 year old girls, who didnt get the message that if you share music we’ll find you, sue you and shake you down for $50k. Now enter Microsoft with a product whoes main selling feature is the ability to share your music… If I’m grandma and I’ve listened to all the scary stories on CNN of people getting sued by the evil record companies, I would think twice about buying something for little Johnny that shares music and is likely to land him in court. My guess is Grandma wont be buying any Zune’s to put in the stocking under the Menorah this Kwanzaa.
