Choosing The Right iPod Earphones

You can own the greatest iPod in the world, but unless you've got the earphones to go with it, it's just a hunk of metal and electronics. If you want great iPod earphones that don't only make your music and movies sound great, but actually rest comfortable inside your lobes, then it's time to pay special attention to the oft-forgotten essential to the iPod experience. Here are some variables to consider and earphone products to peruse:

Comfort. You have to start with comfort, because if your earphones feel like they're sanding away at the insides of your ears, chances are that it doesn't matter how good the song sounds. Stroll through Apple's iPod earphones store and find some in-ear earphones that actually provide some degree of comfort for your head. It will be a wise purchase.

Sound. Of course, you can't ignore the sound-moving quality of electronics giants like Sony, which offers their own earphones that go well with the iPod interface. You'll want to make sure you can hear lucid sound, even at low volumes. It's hard to enjoy a long train or plane ride if your iPod's earphones don't even broadcast the audio to your ears well - even if the earphones are comfortable.

Noise-cancellation. Grouping together with "sound," you'll also want to view noise-cancellation as one of the important variables here. You can combine great sound and great comfort, as we suggested above, but without some degree of noise cancellation, you'll be a slave to your environment. If you want to block out the sound of a jet engine, the back of a car on the highway, or the hustle and bustle of city life, then you'll need earphones that adequately cancel out external sounds and tune you in to what's happening on your iPod.

Good iPod earphones should provide top quality in each of the variables above. You don't only need sound, but you need sound despite the environment, and you need comfort on your ears - or else it will all be for naught. Don't expect your earphones to change your life forever; but they should increase the quality of your listening when it's time to tune in to your latest downloads from iTunes. If you can, try a few iPod earphones out before you use them; if your friend has a great pair of earphones, ask him where he got them and buy a pair for yourself.

You've done it - you've just established your ultimate playlist that works perfectly for either a commute to work (plugged into the speaker, of course) or a hefty workout at the gym. Then your iPod breaks.

After some frustrated curse words, you decide that it's time to take serious action and learn how to get fixing the iPod rather than cursing it. And that's where this article comes in.

We can't solve every iPod problem for you in a few paragraphs, but we can boil the process down to its bare essentials and get things started for you.

Tip #1: Diagnosis.

You need to make sure that you know what's wrong with your iPod before you decide to start fixing it. In order to do that, make sure that your battery is fully charged. You wouldn't believe how many times people get frustrated about a "broken iPod" only to realize that they're simply out of battery. If all systems are go but the iPod still isn't working, you have to find out what's wrong.

Diagnosis works by finding out which part of your iPod went haywire.

Sometimes, it may be a true mystery, but other times you'll be able to recognize the warning signs like in WikiHow's guide to fixing an iPod. If you can figure out if one specific part is the culprit, then contact Apple and see if they can send a new one.

Tip #2: Fix or replace.

As if diagnosis wasn't vexing enough, now it's time to start actually fixing the iPod. One site we recommend is iFixit.com, which has a range of guides on how to fix almost anything!

You will find that some things, such as broken screens, batteries and hard drives are replaceable, but major breakages such as connector or motherboard damage are fatal. In this situation, you will need to completely replace your iPod. But, don't fear. You'll probably be upgrading to a new version, and you're on the best site in the world to find a great price for an iPod Replacement.

Using an online marketplace like eBay (highly recommended for many of your iPod needs), try and find the appropriate part for your iPod, especially if you don't have a warranty on the iPod and can't call Apple for the replacement. If no amount of replaced parts will fix it, then it's time to simply look for a new iPod altogether - again, use eBay for cheaper prices.

Fixing the iPod that has gotten you through early-morning traffic and tough bicycling jaunts into the hills can be a really frustrating experience.

Don't let it get to you. Simply work to diagnose the problem and figure out if it needs to be fixed or replaced, and you'll be set.

Everyone wants an iPod, but not everyone has the money.

That sort of sentiment is exactly why so many people are on the hunt for the best iPod deals these days.

But if such deals were so easy to find, why did your best friend buy a fresh one for full price even though he can't pay his rent? Because he doesn't know how or where to look for the best prices. But don't worry; after reading this article, you will.

eBay - Now's the Time to Log On

Looking for the best iPod deals around? Then I've got one word for you: eBay. eBay is probably the greatest worldwide marketplace for finding deals on just about everything - whether you're looking for a Lamborghini or a lava lamp. But the funny thing about eBay is, despite its popularity, a lot of people are hesitant to take their deal-searching online.

But that's not you. You're going to enter in a search for iPods on eBay and you're going to scroll through search results, sort by the best prices, and review seller feedback so that you know here you're buying your iPod from. You also don't mind having a used iPod rather than a fresh, newly-minted one; after all, iPods are all about listening to music and not looking good. Right?

Now the best News - you don't actually have to go to ebay to find the best iPod Deals. We've designed this site to do exactly that for you. Have a browse around, you'll see what we mean!

Why You Should Buy an Old, Cheap iPod

If you read that last paragraph and scoffed, then we have a little more work to do. Let's start with the broad strokes - what kind of iPod do you even want to buy? If you're looking for great iPod deals, then review all of the different classes, generations, and models of iPods out there and ask yourself which one is the best fit for you.

Have you been telling yourself that all you need is an iPod to fill your ears up while you run every other day? Then the iPod Shuffle will fulfill all of your needs with minimal frills. Want video and other features? Think about a Touch or a Nano instead.

Finding a great deal on an iPod isn't only about finding the best price, it's about finding the most suitable iPod model that will actually fit what you're looking for. iPod deals are easy to come by once you follow these two basic steps: search for the cheapest iPod model that suits your needs and search on eBay for the lowest prices. Combine those two in one half-hour or so and you've probably got a great iPod deal starting right at you.
You May Also Be Interested In:Five Tips for Saving Money When Buying an iPod

How Popular Is The iPod in Australia?

When you read about the iPod on the Internet, you often find that people aren't talking about the iPod in Australia;

Instead, they're talking about U.S. prices, or popularity in the U.K., or some general "international" popularity that doesn't always apply down under.

But just how popular is the iPod in Australia, and how often will you see your Mate carrying one of his own?

Apple.com/Au

To answer that question, it's a good idea to start at the source: Apple. Apple's Australian iPod hub is virtually the same as its other web sites, including the American and U.K. versions. With the news that Apple has streamlined its iPod distribution in Australia, it's fairly easy to say that the iPod is as popular here in Australia as it is anywhere else in the western world.

The growing presence of Apple stores in Australia has also mirrored the success of the iPod.

International Sales Numbers

Back in 2007, the iPod hit over half of the Australian market share, according to iLounge.com, which rivaled the market share of the iPod in the U.S. at the time, around 70%. That's not too shabby, especially since Apple is an American-based company selling overseas.

You can also check out a pie chart at Mashable.com that takes a look at the international sales of the iPod by a continent breakdown - you'll find that Western Europe generally dominates the international iPod sales.

Is It Enough?

There are some who would complain that Apple's presence in Australia has been token, and that its international popularity has fueled its popularity in Australia. But walk down any given street in Sydney long enough and you would be hard-pressed not to find the influence of the iPod or the iPhone in some fashion; it's true that the iPod is truly a global product, even if overall sales numbers seem to favor North America and Western Europe.

If you want to know how popular it is to own an iPod in Australia, you need to experience it for yourself - because it seems like just about everyone has one. While Australia might not represent a major market share for the iPod's international sales, that doesn't mean its popularity here in Australia is far less than its popularity in the U.S., Canada, or Britain. If you're an Australian, simply ask yourself this: do you own one, or do you know someone who does?
You May Also Be Interested In:How Different is the iPod Nano From Its First Release?

iPod Hard Drive - Replacing Your Broken HDD

One of the most attractive features about the iPod Classic is its storage capacity - in one small gadget, you can fit thousands of songs to take with you on the go.

And it's fueled by the iPod hard drive, a little tiny that, according to QuickOnlineTips.com, is almost sure to die out in your iPod's lifetime.

So what happens if your hard drive fails and you suddenly find yourself in need of a new one? You follow two very basic and essential steps.

1. Buy A New One - & Make Sure It's The Right Kind.

Before you even attempt to replace your iPod hard drive, you need to make sure that you're going to replace it with the right device or else the whole thing won't work. This is actually a far simpler process than it sounds like - you simply need to know the type and model of your iPod and select an appropriate hard drive replacement for that type.

So where do you begin? First, check the series of iPod Classic that you're using, as well as its general type - and remember, if it's Shuffle, Touch, Or Nano, it's doesn't have a hard drive because it's memory based, so we'll ignore that piece of the puzzle. Then search eBay online to and enter in a search for that model and then add the words "hard drive."

Make sure that this isn't where your research ends, however. You'll want to make sure that the hard drive you're buying is on the up-and-up, so use eBay's seller feedback system to ensure that you're buying from someone with a history of satisfying their buyers. Once you've done that, you're ready to go!

2. Replace The Hard Drive.

Now it's time to replace the hard drive. If you've never been much of an "electronics" person, now might be the time to consult QuickOnlineTips' guide for replacing your hard drive. What's important to remember is that you have the right tools - like a thin flathead screwdriver - and that you take each step of replacing the hard drive at a time. Try not to simply go in and improvise the replacing of the hard drive unless you actually have some experience with the interior of your iPod.

Once you've removed the old hard drive, attached the new one, and re-attached your casing, make sure that you update the software with Apple and voila! You should be all set. Replacing an iPod hard drive doesn't have to be brain surgery, but if this is your first time, it helps to take it slow.
You May Also Be Interested In:How to Convert Video to Your iPod

Three Great Uses for the iPod Shuffle

Many people believe the iPod Shuffle is simply a cheaper alternative to the real McCoy of an iPod Nano or an iPod Classic, but if all you can afford is an iPod Shuffle, there's still plenty you can do with it. You can do about a million things - or, as Kottke.org shows, 50 - but the bottom line is that the iPod Shuffle is a bare-bones, simple alternative that delivers good access to music and podcasts without any of the frills. Many people enjoy this; for those of you who don't, here's a bit of a refresher course on what the iPod Shuffle can do.

1. Listen to talk radio after it's already broadcast.

One of the great things about the iPod Shuffle is that it can function like TiVo for the radio. What do I mean by this? Quite simply, you can download podcasts to your favorite radio broadcasts and listen to them with a day's delay. Many people find that they're working while their favorite radio shows are on the air, but by subscribing to your favorite show's podcast on iTunes, you can easily cycle through new podcasts as if you were listening to the radio on a daily basis. It's a great substitute for the radio and it won't require that you alter your schedule.

2. Move up through the iPod ranks.

If you're smart and you want the thrills of the more expensive versions of the iPod you can leverage your iPod shuffle to get you better deals. How? Simple bartering. Don't believe you can be that trade-savvy? Check out FreeLamborghini.com, one man's quest to turn two pennies into a Lamborghini simply by making a series of wise trades and transactions. Suddenly turning an iPod Shuffle into an iPod Nano doesn't sound like such a wacky idea.

3. Design your own workout album and time yourself by it.

If you need some good songs for working out and want to make sure you get at least a good 45 minutes at the gym, put together a nice inspiring playlist that's around 45 minutes, clear out the old songs from your shuffle, and press "play" when it's time to get cracking. You'll have a watch-free, creative way to time yourself; you'll know when to stop when you hear your first song for the second time.

How Different is the iPod Nano From Its First Release?

Technology moves so fast these days that it only takes a decade or so before we start looking at gadgets like they once existed in prehistoric times. There's no better example of that than the iPod series, the gadget of personal audio and video that's been around throughout most of the the 2000s. Take a look at the original iPod Classic and you'll think you're looking at a relic of the past. But how about the iPod Nano?

One gander at this picture (courtesy of Wikipedia) will show you just how different the iPod Nano looks today. But has more changed than just the exterior? Let's look at a few of the changes that have occurred over the years.

• The original Nano was launched with two different storage capacities: 2 and 4 gigabytes. Those have since quadrupled, with the low price for a fifth-generation Nano bringing you a whopping 8 GB and the higher-priced version providing 16 GB of storage. Considering space has quadrupled in the span of only four years or so, I'd say that's a fairly dramatic improvement.

• Current-generation iPod Nanos come with cameras and microphones, a feat that isn't even close to the original Nano, which was more limited to pre-determined sound and sight. You can now bring your iPod Nano with you and expect to record some footage wherever you go, much like a camera-phone.

• The latest iPod Nano also has features like FM radio, special effects for your video recording, and Nike+ iPod support, which means that you can integrate your iPod with your...well, your shoe.

At the beginning of 2005, there wasn't even a Nano series available on the market, but in just four or so short years since then, one part of the iPod and iPhone world has moved vastly far, driven by the need to satisfy customer demand and beat out competition.

Although we're used to quick updates and upgrades in technology this day and age, simply stepping back and taking a look back at iPod's Nano series - originally launched as a replacement for the iPod Mini - lets you know how far we've come. If that's the kind of progress we made in the past five years, it's also fun to think about what kind of gadgets might be around in 2014. Did someone say iPod Cheetah?

Which iPod is Right For You?

If you've decided to get an iPod without ever having bought one for you, you're in for a treat. But you might also be in for a bit of confusion, especially if you're not up to date on today's technology. You might come across a purchase page on Apple asking if you want to buy an iPod Shuffle or an iPod Nano. Wait. What's that? There's more than one type of iPod? Well, what's the difference? You're about to find out those differences - as well as which iPod might be right for you.

iPod Touch

The iPod Touch is a more all-inclusive gadget more on the level of an iPhone rather than a simple music player. The iPod touch is great for someone who wants a gadget with all sorts of bells and whistles, whether we're talking about wireless internet access, e-mail, or even games. Yes, the iPod Touch can still handle your videos and music, but if you want something simpler, this probably isn't the iPod for you. If you consider yourself a tech junkie who doesn't have the money to shell out for a full iPhone, however, this is right up your alley.

iPod Nano

The iPod Nano is closer to the "classic" iPod, but comes with the added feature of being able to display - and even shoot - video. It's small and simpler than the iPod Touch, but still comes with added features over the "classic" version of the iPod. If you're someone who travels a lot and can use a movie library in their pocket, the Nano might be perfect for you. If you simply need an iPod to listen to music while jogging, you might want to keep reading.

iPod Shuffle

The simplest, most stripped-down version of the iPod is great for people who simply want to plug in some headphones and hear some freaking music already. If you're a runner or frequent exerciser who has a few favorite collections you can't live without, the shuffle may be up your alley. The Shuffle is extremely lightweight, making for almost total mobility.

Are you sick of hearing all of the different options, and just want your iPod? Then check out the iPod Classic, the iPod that represents the origin of the genre. It comes complete with a screen for checking out the songs you want to play, but doesn't have the expanded features of some of the more advanced iPods.

Are You Using the Right Headphones for Your iPod?

Sure, Apple products like the iPod Nano often come with their own headphones, and many people are content to clip them into their iPod and listen away. But are they really the earphones you want to be using? Are there more comfortable ones out there? Are there headphones that sound better without being bulkier? If you've found yourself asking these kinds of questions, you might be in the market for a new set of headphones. However, you might be surprised to hear the real answers.

First, know that even Apple knows that its default headphones aren't the best on the market. How can I say that? Because Apple offers its own in-ear headphones for $79. These look like the default headphones but are manufactured for enhanced sound and comfort - people won't even know you can hear your iPod better than they can.

I can hear you already. "What? $79? I've bought better headphones for $30. Sure, they're pretty big, but I'd prefer looking dumb if I can have a higher quality of sound and more comfort." Okay, maybe those aren't your exact words, but I'm onto you. After all, a lot of people aren't content with their headphone situation. Just check out About.com, where you see reviews for more than one pair of headphones for the iPod. Clearly, something is up. If everyone was happy with the default headphones, there wouldn't be so many people searching for better products!

So which way should you go? Should you go for that studio-quality sound you get from the big fluffy black headphones (and risk looking like a weirdo out in the city), do you get Apple's upgrade, or do you stick with the default?

Ultimately, it will be up to you. If you've always enjoyed the sound coming from your iPod, and the headphones are comfortable, there's no reason to shell out some extra money for a pair of headphones. If, however, you can't stand those default headphones and would prefer something with more clarity and comfort, it's time to start looking on the market. See if you can give the Apple headphones a try in a nearby Apple store; otherwise, consider smaller, comfortable alternatives you can wear that won't make you look like a traveling geek parade.

How to Use an iPod Shuffle Without Going Crazy

Even if you're a technology buff who loves a good gadget, there's a possibility that the stripped-down, simple build of the iPod Shuffle vexes even you. It can be difficult to find out which songs are being played, when they're being played, and how to get to the song you really like. If you've ever wondered how to program your iPod Shuffle to work the way you want it to work - and after all, many Shuffle owners don't need the frills anyway - then this article is for you.

First, make sure to consult eHow.com's tutorial on using an iPod Shuffle. If you want to learn how to upload your songs because you haven't even done that yet, that article will tell you what you need to do, and possibly what you've been doing wrong. After you're able to get your songs onto the shuffle, let's take a look at how you can get them working the way you want.

It's important to remember that the playlist you want to upload is how the playlist will function on your Shuffle. For example, if you want a certain song to go first, you'll put it at the top of your playlist in the very first spot. Some people find that organizing a playlist so that the songs naturally segue into each other is a great way to simply set your iPod Shuffle and forget about all of the, well, shuffling. This is a particularly effective strategy if you plan on bringing your Shuffle while traveling or working out.

The Shuffle's simple interface will allow you to go between songs if you need to. All you have to do is press "next" or "previous" - the arrows pointing left or right - in order to do that. Other simple buttons like pause and volume are also on the main "dashboard" of your shuffle, all in one place.

It's possible to get a little more complicated with your Shuffle and learn, for example, about the iPod Shuffle integrated earphone controls. If you really want to get your Shuffle to "set it and forget it" status, then you'll want to do all of the work upfront. Spend a good half hour or so learning about the different features of the iPod Shuffle, and program your playlist according to your liking. After you've done that, you shouldn't have much trouble in the future, as you'll have learned many of the ins and outs of one of Apple's simplest contraptions.

Now, if only you could figure out your DVD player...
