Also, some more payload stability improvements were made, and the windows version was updated to RC2a. There is no reason to run RC2a if you already have RC2 installed.

Here we are again folks, 5th July AppStore this week!

This week we see more games in the Appstore, These are: The long awaited Rolando 2, Dirt Moto Racing and also a quite unknown game Circuit Strike One.

We also see many more apps on sale, Kroll, pop and Sega's Columns Deluxe, many others this week after the jump.

A couple of updates aswell this week, Doodle Jump and iShoot.

He used to be on the Dev Team before he got kicked off. 1st iPhone 2G hardware unlock, etc. Oh, and if you haven't dumped the Purplera1n ECID file, temp stuff, or USB dump, do it now! This will ensure that you can jailbreak not matter what!

Normally I don't make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it's just a matter of tools.

Props to chronic dev for their help, and to kroo for writing v2 of Freeze. And props to Saurik for making an awesome package set. Note the binary size of purplera1n, it's smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!

For those of you having problems. This only works with the English version on XP or in XP compatiblity mode on Vista. For those of you having the "waiting for iPhone to reboot" crap, close out iTunes, close out Purplera1n. Restart only Purplera1n and click "make it ra1n". There should be a Purplera1n pic on your iPhone soon.

Update: Geohot released a new Purplera1n JB with kernel and sig fixes. Just rerun it over your already JB or stock 3GS. There is no support Winterboard yet but the ball is in Saurik's (winterboard creator) court :-)

Mountain Sheep announced development of Minigore quite some time ago and we finally got our hands on a pre-release build of the game. For those that don't know, Minigore is a survival shooter where your aim is to survive as long as you can and get the highest score. This game will get anyone addicted, whether they be kids, teens or adults. Minigore has all the things you absolutely love! Blood, gore, violence, guns, monsters, and even bushes.

Getting chased by creepy creatures

Getting chased by creepy faces and creatures isn't such a nice thing, but shooting them and watching them explode as the blood gushes out is another thing. You don't know where they will come out from, maybe the bushes or maybe the trees, but that's the great thing, it builds up the suspense. Playing a game absolutely requires music, and trust me, there are some fabulous sounds in here. There's some nice sounds of the bodies popping, the firing of your gun and the suspenseful and mischievous music in the background. Stuck in a dead end, don't want to die? There's only one solution. Find enough clovers to transform into a bull, and just crush them like they were ants. Minigore keeps you entertained for hours and gets you coming back for more!

Minigore is an amazing game with unique graphics, exceptional audio and addictive gameplay. I would recommend Minigore to absolutely anyone but especially to fans of games like iDracula. Let's not forget that our own MR Team member Radish is going to be featured in the game. So that's a bonus. There's nothing better than watching an in-game model of Radish being bombarded by crazed creatures and trampled to death

Summary:

We can jailbreak the 3GS right now. But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people. It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help. So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.

Details:

If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape. You will always be able to jailbreak. But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one. For instance, many people are waiting for their existing contracts to mature to the point where they get a price break on the 3GS. Many people are trying to sell their 3G before they can buy the 3GS. There are parts of the globe where you can’t even buy a 3GS yet! The reasons are varied, but they are many.

The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID). You cannot get these signed chunks without knowing your ECID, and you don’t know your ECID until you’ve bought your 3GS.

The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device. And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug. It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing.

Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones. If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.

It is possible that Apple will find the bug we use without our handing it to them on a silver platter (via a public jailbreak). In that case, we will have delayed our jailbreak for “nothing”. But we’d rather be safe than sorry!

Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w. They need to fix some UI issues. 3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming. We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.

In the meantime, we have some remaining 3.0 jailbreak issues to investigate, including push notification. Thanks for being patient with us while we took a 3GS “timeout”!

Apple has added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS. I mentioned it several posts earlier; it's the ECID field. When iTunes starts the restore process, they contact Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. It's important you get these signatures for your phone before a new version of the software comes out. I had previously suggested doing this by dumping usb while the iPhone restores. But this is complicated.

Fortunately, the good folks at purplera1n are here for you, the end user who wants a jailbreak. Follow these instructions to generate a unique certificate for your phones iBSS. And don't delay, Apple may change their minds. To clarify, this is instead of a usb dump. Do this, and you are good!

1. Put your phone into recovery mode and connect it to your computer.

A couple hours later, and I'd got it working. And man is it awesome!

On a whim, I'd rewritten Stack to actually be an icon in SpringBoard. It can be moved anywhere, has all the same positioning and reordering abilities as any other icon, it doesn't interfere with other apps, and is generally the cleanest and best way I could ever implement Stacks (yes, with an 's', there can be more than one now!). It took an awful lot of hacking around and programming blind to pull it off, but I think it's gonna work really well.

I have no idea when I'll release it, but it will (likely) only be for iPhone 3.0 and above (running out of 2.x devices here to test against for compatibility!).

On http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com it appears that GeoHot has pwned (by pwned i mean an iboot exploit) the iPhone 3GS. He has posted the makings of the jailbreak for the new iPhone 3GS (N88AP) (entitled 'no sn0w in summer). Only time will tell to see how this develops but i think we have another iDevice in the bag (with a bit more work)!

You see, the iPhone 3GS has had a large upgrade in the performance department. It’s very powerful CPU and GPU, its guts are very similar to the OpenPandora.org’s Pandora project. They both have an ARM Cortex A8 processor, and they both have the PowerVR SGX video chipset. The iPhone 3GS clocks in at 600MHz too!

These similarities have me quite excited! While working with my Pandora MK2 devkit I have made psx4pandora, which has many games running fullspeed (60 FPS for NTSC) with sound @ 500MHz. The iPhone 3GS sounds suited for psx4iphone now!

The catch? There’s currently no jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS.

The temporary solution? I’m codesigning my emulator binaries for my own use.

The result is shown in the video below where you can see gpSPhone running at a minimum 150 FPS and maxing out at about 225 FPS, with sound and 0 frameskip! This is a HUGE performance increase where the iPhone 3G needed frameskipping just to reach 60 FPS!

Some technical notes on this build: For some reason gpSPhone is able to fit the dynarec memory it uses in executable memory. So I lucked out and was able to get the dynarec working on the iPhone 3GS without a jailbreak. I’m curious as to why this can even occur. Typically you need a jailbroken firmware to allow memory to be made executable for dynarecs to work. I’ll have to see if psx4iphone will work next!

As anyone reading this blog must already know, this is the big week where Apple releases their official 3.0 FW to the public (Wednesday), and then the new iPhone2,1 hardware, aka the iPhone 3GS (Friday).

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging or partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played

Despite the crazy upgrade prices, AT&T are warning that any new iPhone 3GS pre-orders made from Saturday the 13th onwards won't be available on the launch day, June 19th, and will be available and shipped out seven to fourteen days after the order is made.

A positive sign that overall demand at this iPhone launch could be even busier that the 3G. The pre-order system is newly implemented for this launch to try and avoid the heavy demand and resultant queues at retail outlets that occurred on 3G launch day.

Anyone in the US who hasn't already pre-ordered and wants an iPhone 3GS on June 19th will have to get in queue with all the others at an AT&T outlet or head over with their sleeping bag and thermos to an Apple shop, Best Buy or Walmart.

o Enable or disable numeric battery, wifi, or GSM (phone strength).
* Revamped the U/I on the more - extras screen.
* Internally, I have made the toggles SDK more extensible enabling direct access to system() calls within the toggles. I expect another small flood of new toggles like safari download, samba, or syslog toggles. These tasks were impossibly difficult on 1.x sbsettings and are now trivially simple.

Known Issues - Please READ THIS before you comment:

1) If your respring, SSH, or EDGE doesn’t work, you are one of the unlucky 3100 to get my bad pack. Reboot the iPhone and you should be ok.

2) If you hold wifi for more than 1 second to try to invoke the hold action, springboard will crash. I had debugging stuff in there that I forgot to remove. None of the toggles support invoke hold action yet anyway so there is no need to hold them.

3) If you saw fastnotes, location services, or processes uninstall on the update this is normal. They are now included in the core sbsettings.

4) I already know that there is some misaligned text on 2.0 mobile substrate screen. The font on 3.0 and 2.0 are sized differently by defaults. Will fix in next version.

5) If you are on 3.0 this will not work for you. Do not report that the more app crashes. It’s not a problem with sbsettings. It’s in your jailbreak. To properly make it work on 3.0 beta, you require a private, not yet released kernel patch and to fix your crashing on loading the more app, you need to install the package that includes dirname. (It will be installed on a real 3.0 release build). Look for one of the *-cmds packages like “adv-cmds”, “file-cmds”, “shell-cmds” or just install all 3.

* DYLIB: Updated processes toggle to not close the toggle each time you kill an app with it.
* DYLIB: Fixed springboard crash when holding wifi toggle for 1 second on 2.x.
* DYLIB: Prevent fast respring if iPhone is locked. Periodically, people post news and videos that you can get to icons and bypass the security lock. This feature is disabled by default and I only added it because users wanted it. So it is an option that you have to enable in the settings. I don’t consider this a security issue since you have to actually enable the feature. In either case, I patched the respring bypass to allow my email inbox to quiet down.

RiPDev's light Icy installer version 1.4 has been released! It seems to have a new icon (shown above) and the ability to cope better with APT repositories (as Icy doesn't actually use APT). It also has a new theming ability: you are able to change the background, font color and more in the application. The have given a small explanation on their blog, but there is, as usual, no solid instruction.

Sega just wanted to make a million dollars so they found a guy to code the emulator. The guy didn't make it a universal emulator; he basically set the bar so it could play Sonic 1 then he got his paycheck. Then Sega took the emulator, added in some nice buttons, and gave it an icon.

According to the recent rumor mill the new iPhone may be announced at WWDC 2009, may come in different colors, may have a rubberised back, may have a glowing Apple logo that doubles as a flash and could possibly maybe also make you a cup of tea, or not (okay, I made the last one up).

What looks to be more or less a dead cert now is that the new 2009 iPhone WILL have a digital compass / magnetometer that will facilitate turn-by-turn GPS to make the Google Maps application a real competitor to paid/subscription GPS systems.

The azimuth sensor would make turn-by-turn GPS more accurate, as well as confirm the orientation of the iPhone in three dimensions. The Android G1 has already demonstrated this functionality. By simply turning the device its possible to browse Google Street View.

The Asahi Kasei azimuth sensor is a 16-pin leadless IC package measuring 4mm square and 0.7mm thick. One of the company's specialties is manufacturing liquid submersion indicators.

Tested on an Early 2008 White MacBook running OS X 10.5.7 installed via the Combo Update. The device is a first-generation iPod touch running a custom 2.2.1 firmware. The iTunes version is 8.1.1 (10).

The iPod was connected to the computer via the USB cable, then placed into DFU mode using PwnageTool. iTunes responded with a 2001 error. The iPod was disconnected and then reconnected, at which point it appeared in iTunes with the standard "iTunes has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode" message.

If you want my theme, the dock is Viridus Pretiosa. The icons are from Buuf Deuce. The "About This Mac" graphics came from here and the iTunes theme is "Bister," available in the Magnifique theming application. Icons and dock were applied via CandyBar, the About This Mac graphics were done through manual replacement, and the iTunes theme was done through Magnifique.]]>

Eli, our resident Peggle fanatic, is quite pleased with the iPhone port and feels it lives up to his memory of the game. A few people, however, have noticed that little background music is included with this version of the game.

On May 17th Verizon is unveiling the new MiFi 2200 portable EV-DO router. In short, it is a hotspot that works (almost) anywhere you go. The device uses their 3G network and creates a WiFi that that up to five devices can pick up a the same time, which means that your iPod touch or other WiFi device can get internet on the go.

The unit itself costs $100 after a $50 mail-in rebate, and you can expect to pay a minimum of $40/month, which gets you 250mb - perhaps just a tad too pricey for the average iPod touch owner. The bottom line is an iPhone would probably be cheaper in the long run, but if you insist on using an iPod touch, and must have internet on the go, then this could be the solution.

Apple released Beta 5 recently with a couple little speed and memory/stability adjustments. The Dev-Team wants everyone to know, iPhone OS 3.0 is STILL jailbreakable. Only hardware tweaks can stop them.

GriP (Growl for iPhone) is an unobstructive notification extension written for iPhone and iPod Touch.

GriP vs. Traditional Notification Methods

There are currently 2 methods to announce a piece of information to you on the iPhone – either to show an alert box (e.g. the 3.0 Push Notification), or just play a sound (e.g. receiving new emails) or vibration. However, alert box is a very rude way to notify something trivial, as an alert box will steal your focus and disrupt your work flow. On the other hand, playing a sound is too hideous, as there are many places you don't want to turn on sound, and iPod Touches don't have a vibration unit.

GriP tries to strike a balance between being unobstructive while still being able to give out clear information. With GriP, messages are (by default) shown as small floating windows in a corner, which will automatically disappear if you ignore it. In this way, you can still continue your process without missing anything.

However, you should not completely replace every alert box with GriP messages. Because GriP messages favor to be ignored by users, they should not be used for critical decision making (e.g. saving a file while quitting).

Update: We've toyed with beta 4 for just a few quick moments now, and naturally, the first thing we had to check out was that previously-empty "Store" settings pane. It's now populated, and it's mega-boring; all it does is allow you to sign in and out of your iTunes account, and while signed in, there's an Account Info button that lets you get booted out to an unstyled web page where you can view and edit your credit card information and the like. On the iTunes 8.2 side of things, we noticed that we were explicitly warned that the app would verify that our phone was activated for use with the beta firmware -- we don't remember seeing that before -- and the Gracenote legal mumbo jumbo in the About window now specifically calls out both DVD and Blu-ray metadata, which we're taking as a promising sign of playback support in the not-too-distant future. Digging deeper into the iPhone 3.0 OS beta firmware has unearthed voice control features under the app codename of 'Jibbler'. Reports suggest that this will allow both speech recognition and synthesis.

The Push Notification service is Apple's substitute for background processes and was originally planned for a September 2008 release. Apple announced in March that they would finally be delivering the service alongside iPhone 3.0 which is due this summer.

This system allows iPhone applications to receive updates while they are not actively running. Apple has claimed that allowing background processes on the current iPhone would sacrifice too much battery power for it to be practical.

Well, the cat is out of the bag. The 3.0 firmware from Apple can be jailbroken, and there are now sites out there giving you that jailbreak (after you sort through various ads and browser popups, etc).

Of course it’s not really a surprise that it can be jailbroken. Why did we not release the jailbreak two weeks ago when the above image was captured and hashed? There are many reasons, mostly resource-related:

We don’t want to have to release a new version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn for every beta release. Last time around during the 2.0 beta period, there were nine (9!) Apple releases, spaced within a few weeks of each other.
There are unresolved problems that we’re still working on. It’s currently impossible to get the 3.0 firmware to talk to baseband 02.28 where yellowsn0w lives, for instance.
We don’t want to have to support everyone who wants to back down from the betas…because the betas are, well, buggy.
It’s silly to play cat&mouse with Apple during a beta period, when relatively few people are willing to actually use the beta software in their everyday lives. There are ways Apple can tighten the screws, and we’d rather not burn methods just for a beta release.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE UNOFFICIAL QUICKPWN RELEASES IS THAT IF YOU USE THEM, YOU WILL KILL YELLOWSN0W, POSSIBLY FOREVER. That’s because QuickPwn, by its very nature, requires you to already have accepted Apple’s official IPSW, along with its baseband update. If you do that, you will (possibly forever) lose your ability to software-unlock your iPhone 3G.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and so perhaps we should be flattered that so many ad-supported sites are now using our own tools to create unofficial jailbreaks (QuickPwn in particular is so easily adapted from one release to the next that it’s reduced to a handful of binary pattern searches in a good hex editor). But please don’t expect support for them on this blog, because we’re actually busy with the hard part of the 3.0 jailbreak (the 02.28 incompatibility and the new compressed ramdisk they’re using).

Update/ Early reports are not good... there's a definite step forward in RipDEV's development, a lot like the sleekness of the app and, so far, there's been no reports of a SWOD. However we advise that you don't use Icy at the moment. When installed Icy sets itself up as an Essential Package, which means it kicks up warning messages when you try and uninstall it. Then there's the fact that, similar to InstallerApp, it leeches bandwidth from repositories without serving the ads that fund the server use. Also, considering the reponses in this thread, IPTF members are already reporting they've seen Icy freeze, crash, not update and lag. Kick icy into touch for now and stick with Cydia is our advice. Lets hope RipDEV can pull themselves together for Installer5, but we won't be holding our breath.

Update#2/ A few select tweets from RipDEV & Saurik from the 24hrs after Icy release provide more detail on the pros & cons of Icy.

In the process of working on InstallerApp, we have extensively investigated how the technology behind Cydia works. Essentially, Cydia is a front-end to two open source technologies - APT and DPKG. DPKG is a system that installs and removes specially prepared packages (.deb files). APT allows these files to be organized in network "repositories" to be indexed and downloaded. Due to the highly unoptimal build of DPKG (as Jay Freeman, the author of Cydia, admits it in his article about Cydia) we had to compile DPKG and the tools needed from scratch. While testing Cydia support for InstallerApp, we of course had to use Jay's creation a lot. And unfortunately it felt slow, and overloaded. We thought, well, why not make our own front-end to DPKG? So one of our programmers sat down and made up in a week a new alternative installer that we are proud to reveal to you today, named Icy.

IcyIcy 1.0 is pretty simple, and we plan on keeping it that way. It will only refresh repositories when you tell it to, and will not scroll pages of cool looking terminal text when installing or removing a package. Instead, it presents the installation process in a friendly and cool manner - enhanced with crisp black and white interface featuring icons by quite famous artist Max Rudberg. Icy uses the same DPKG that Cydia does, but without APT that handles downloading of repository indeces and packages - we chose to use a combination of libcurl and sqlite for that.

Icy only downloads headers when refreshing repositories, so it won't download again the indeces that were not changed - this saves on your traffic and makes the refreshes faster. It will pick up existing Cydia repositories and also will allow you to add more through its Add Source interface.

When we saw that Apple is moving towards supporting landscape mode more in the upcoming 3.0 firmware, we thought - hey, landscape is useful when browsing, too! So Icy supports landscape as well.

Icy will always remain free. Despite what some people may think, we are not blind and we see what tremendious job Jay (saurik) Freeman and community source repository owners (such as The Big Boss, Fabiano Confuorto and others) have done over the past year - and this is our way to say "thank you" to them. We hope you will enjoy the "new kid on the block" - and we have extensive plans on enhancing it in the future versions - for example, 1.1 will have, among other things, a dependency graph for the packages.

This being said, we will be slowly phasing out support of Installer 4 in favor of Icy and soon-to-be-announced Installer 5. Since we're a commercial entity with over 10 people in staff, we have the dedication and resources to make sure Icy and Installer exist and grow peacefully together with Cydia.

Today, along with an excellent presentation, came the 3.0 “KirkVail” beta firmware. It was put up on the torrents just recently, so I have not had too much time to look into it, but so far it seems that (a) the firmware files are unencrypted, for example, just strip the first 0×30 bytes and there you have it, and (b) there is a new tag called TYPE. It is not “too” much use, but just tightens the vicegrip on our balls, so to speak. It does not really make much sense, since the fourcc at 0×10 of the img3 header could just be used, but the point of it is to assure that you are loading what you should be loading, for example, iBEC with the “go” command, the kernel and ramdisk with the bootx command, etc.

Since I know everyone is eager to upgrade, I must stress that you should wait until a new PwnageTool comes out if you want any jailbroken functionality. It is pretty straightforward to do the patches, as the Img3 files are not even encrypted it seems, but the ASR program does not just store the root filesystem DMG key in plain ASCII anymore, so that could be the one thing that might hold back the devteam on the new bundles.

Also, I would like to be the first to say, “Here we go again!”

Note on downgrading: I have not done any testing myself, but from experience I know they cannot permanently disable you from downgrading. If you downgrade iTunes, and do a DFU restore with the downgraded iTunes, then it will let you go back to 2.x.

What's going on?

Apple are giving us a sneak peek at the upcoming iPhone 3.0 Operating System, and a look at the future SDK for iPhone developing. The event was on Tuesday the 17th of March at 10am PST, at Apple's HQ in Cupertino (instead of San Fransisco where Apple normally hold big events.)

What's new in 3.0?

The new OS has over 100 new features for customers.
Copy and Paste is finally here! Huzzah!

As spoiled on Diggnation, double tap, drag, tap copy, and then double tap, paste. Shake your device to undo. Works on all apps, for anything from text to HTML.
You can now email more than one photo at once, in the same way you can mass delete/move mail. Just tap the action button, choose photo thumbnails and SHARE.
Landscape mode has come to more apps than just Safari... you can now use them in key applications like... SMS, Notes and... MAIL!
SMS is upgraded too. You can now delete and forward multiple messages.
MMS is coming too. You can send pictures via text messages. Why wasn't this in iPhone 1.1.x?
Voice Memos. Record yourself with the iPhone's mic, trim it on the iPhone itself, and then send it around.
Support for two more calendar types. CalDAV (Google and Yahoo) and Subscriptions (using .ics files.)
In Stocks, they’ve added support for news stories (headlines) in the bottom of the app. You can also get details like highs and lows and PEs. And landscape view.
Added search functions in Mail, Calendar, Music - Searching support was on Remote (app) but not on the iPhone's actual music app... Hmm
Mac users will be familiar with Spotlight, the search bar in the top right of all Macs. Well it's coming to the iPhone. Just flick left on your homescreen and it will open up - and you can search your whole device! VERY useful.
Here's an image with a whole lot more additions that Apple never talked about. Notice the YouTube app looks like it's getting a major update. Also, live streaming. And ability to sync notes. AND shake to shuffle! Loads of new features coming in 3.0

What about the SDK?

SDK 3.0 will bring 1000 new APIs.

Anything else?

Apple set themselves a goal before they shipped their first iPhone - To sell over 10 million. They smashed the record, by selling 17 million! (But with iPod Touches aswell - Over 30 million!)
62% of people who downloaded the old SDK, had never developed an Apple application before.
In the 8 months, there have been 800 million application downloads in total.
15 more countries have been added to the App Store list - That makes 77.

Future Application Releases.
Meebo are making an IM app which connects with social networking sites too. It will use the new push notification. Could there finally be a decent, cheap IM app?
The Sims 3 is coming to the App Store. EA have stuck a load of 3.0 features into the app: for example, you'll be able to buy items for the game (presumably furniture and clothing) for 99 cents each (59p)

Ngmoco were over at the event - And announced LiveFire (a 3rd person multiplayer shooter game) and are showing off their TouchPets app (out soon - look on the ngmoco site.)

TouchPets uses push notifications to tell you when a friend wants to make a play-date with you. It also uses in-app purchases so you can buy food and clothes for your dog. Personally, I'd let it starve!

LiveFire is an FPS game. You control by touching the screen. Again, you can send notifications to friends, and buy weapons in-game to play with. It also looks like you'll be able to do in-game voice chats too - Just like on an Xbox or PS3!
Smule (the makers of the legendary music app, Ocarina) demoed their new app: Leaf Trombone. Another music app. Using the iPhone's mic and finger-to-screen controls. A duet was played using the new peer-to-peer API.

To recap the big features in 3.0: In-App purchase to enable more app functionality, peer to peer connectivity, accessory connectivity, Google map controls, push notifications, cut and paste, landscape mode, Messages (MMS), voice memos, new Calendar support, enhancements to the Stock App and search (Spotlight). Plus, Bluetooth, if you’re really looking forward to that one.

The 3.0 Beta is available to all members of the iPhone Developer Program.

It will be coming out in June 2009 for us normal users! $9.95 for iPod Touches, free for iPhones. Not all features will work on the 1st gen iPhone.

Q: Josh Quittner, Time: Why did it take so long so get Cut and Paste into the iPhone?
A: There’s a user interface you need to design, security issues, and “there’s a lot of pieces you need to worry about instead of getting something that doesn’t work right.”

Q: Flash? What are you doing?
A: We have no announcements on that topic today. But there are a lot of video streams we can handle. h.264 works great. We're adding HDTV streaming for audio and video. We think there's a lot of great video solutions for a single clip.

Q: Could you qualify a bit more about the peer to peer. It looks like it’s available across the two iPhones, but it seems like you can do peer to peer with other Bluetooth devices.
A: It’s really a device to device Bluetooth connection. It’s 1 to 1, using Bluetooth and Bonjour to discover other devices and make an IP connection.

A: We have the ability to stream music to music apps, and certainly a game, if a game has music in the game it would be possible to download game tracks, but if would be confusing for other music apps with downloadable music that isn’t through the app store.

Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0.

Q: Can you say anything about hardware?
A: No.

A: Nothing to announce today.

Q: Will you make any promises about push notification in terms of uptime?
A: No. We want it to be as reliable as possible.

Q: On the voice memo, you mentioned external microphones. Could you use an off-the-shelf microphone?
A: Yes absolutely, if you have an adapter.

Q: Are you addressing some of the performance issues in the current OS? It’s slightly laggy, are you going to address that in 3.0.
A: We absolutely take performance very seriously. These units, because they’re tethered, are more laggy than you would see on standalone units. But we are addressing lagginess in our own ways.

Q: Is there a physical hardware problem on the first-gen iPhone that prevents it from doing MMS.
A: It’s a different radio, so it is a physical issue.

Q: With Peer to Peer, can you have access to other iTunes library?
A: You can see them but I don’t know if you can play them.
