Apple Posts iPhone 3G S Availability Database!

Apple has posted a database for customers to view the availability of the iPhone 3G S in different stores and states in the US. The database also shows the availability of the four different models and is updated hourly. Apple made something similar for the iPhone and iPhone 3G in the previous years but they only updated nightly with the stocks of the following day.

YouTube Video Uploads from Mobiles Increased by 400%

YouTube announced that since the launch of the iPhone 3G S, they have seen a 400% increase in video uploads from mobile devices. The new iPhone 3G S allows users to record videos and directly upload it to YouTube from the device itself.

iPhone and iPod Touch Accounts for 69% of AdMob Ads!

AdMob Metrics reports that their mobile advertising firm, AdMob, has revealed that the iPhone and iPod Touch is accounting for 69% of their US smartphone traffic on its ad network. The figure was at 59% in April and 50% in March.

Worldwide, the iPhone and iPod Touch is now accounting for 49% of the smartphone ad requests.

Digital Compass Used in an iPhone App!

An iPhone Developer, Ziconic, has developed a private build of the AirCoaster 3D application in the App Store, taking advantage of the new Digital Compass in the iPhone 3G S. AirCoaster 3D allows users to design and ride their own roller coasters and this private build allows the user to move the iPhone in real life to change the viewing angle inside the application itself.

The current version of AirCoaster 3D does not have this feature but it is expected to come as an update for the application in the near future.

iPhone 3G S in Javascript Benchmark!

Medialets released the results of JavaScript benchmark tests with the SunSpider test suite on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, T-Mobile G1 and Palm Pre. SunSpider test suite is used for testing and comparing different versions of the same browser and even different browsers to each other. The results show us that new iPhone 3G S is 3x faster than the Palm Pre and 5x faster than the T-Mobile G1.

Medialets also tested the iPhone 3G running both iPhone OS 2.2.1 and OS 3.0. This revealed that the new iPhone OS 3.0 is 3x faster than OS 2.2.1 with the same hardware. Compare the iPhone 3G on the 3.0 OS with the iPhone 3G S and you will see that the iPhone 3G S is 3x faster than the 3G.

iPhone 3G S Tear Down Reveals $178.96 Worth of Parts and Manufacturing Cost!

iSuppli has announced today that from the results of their tear down of the 16GB iPhone 3G S, they have found out that the device's parts cost a total of $172.46. In addition to this, they also included the manufacturing prices which is an estimated $6.50, raising the total price to $178.96.

Next Generation iPod Touch to Come Soon?

A recent post by a member of iPod Touch Fans has reported that they have found evidence referencing to the possible next generation iPod Touch model, "iPod3,1". The current iPod Touch is named "iPod2,1", so the references to the "iPod3,1" model is most likely the next generation iPod Touch. Since the first and second generation iPod Touch were released in September, this next generation iPod Touch to be released in September is a reasonable guess.

This new model is expected to have the same specs as the iPhone 3G S and will most likely come in the same three storage capacities as the previous generations. Some rumors we heard of have stated that this new model may even come with a camera that can record videos. Time will tell if this is true, so just sit back and relax.

Apple Sells Over One Million iPhone 3G S Models on Launch Weekend!

Apple reports that they have sold over one million models of the iPhone 3G S over the weekend. The sales numbers are similar to those of last year's iPhone 3G launch weekend. Apple has also stated that more than six million iPhone and iPod Touch users have already downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software.

"Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With over 50,000 applications available from Apple's revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever."

Several iPhone 3G S customers in the US are witnessing problems with activating their purchases. A message is given during the activation process, indicating that it may take up to 48 hours for activations to be processed.

iPhone 3G S Sales on Launch to Exceed iPhone 3G?

Despite the fact that the lines outside the stores are shorter than the iPhone 3G launch, the early sales numbers are indicating that the iPhone 3G S could exceed the sales of the iPhone 3G launch. This year, Apple and AT&T are allowing pre-orders for the iPhone 3G S which resulted in the shorter lines. Last year, Apple managed to sell up to 1 million iPhone 3G handsets on the launch weekend, but a UK Mobile Carrier called O2 has revealed that by lunchtime, they have sold more iPhone 3G S handsets than they did with the iPhone 3G for the entire day of launch. They are expecting to see 50% more sales than last year's iPhone 3G launch by the end of the day.

The iPhone 3G S has finally gotten onto the shelves in US stores this morning at 7 a.m. The lines are definitely not going to be as long as when the iPhone 3G was released since Apple are allowing pre-orders this year. The iPhone 3G S is 2x faster than the iPhone 3G and has many new features like Spotlight, Cut, Copy & Paste, Voice Control and many more.

AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots With Auto-Authentication on iPhone OS 3.0!

AT&T announced today that they have optimized their Wi-Fi Hot Spots to have support for Wi-Fi Auto-Authentication with the new iPhone OS 3.0. AT&T customers had access to over 20,000 Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the US but had to manually connect to the network using SMS. Wi-Fi Auto-Authentication will make it easier and faster for iPhone owners to connect to AT&T Wi-Fi.

Auto-authentication allows iPhone users to seamlessly switch from AT&T's 3G network to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot without being prompted. AT&T customers with qualifying iPhone data plans have unlimited access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi network -- more than 20,000 U.S. AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots. The new process eliminates the previous two-step authentication, making it easier and faster for iPhone customers to connect to AT&T Wi-Fi. Auto-connect is established once a customer connects their iPhone to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot the first time.

This new feature will be available to all existing and new iPhone customers who have updated and installed the new iPhone OS 3.0 software starting today.

AT&T Extends Upgrade Pricing of iPhone 3G S to More Customers!

Many iPhone 3G owners that didn't get to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S at the lower price of $199/$299 have been complaining a lot about this issue. AT&T announced today that they will be extending the range of customers that will be eligible for the upgrade pricing on the iPhone 3G S. This will allow customers that was only eligible to upgrade in July, August or September to be qualified for upgrading prices on the day of launch. The iPhone 3G S will be available for $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model which will save customers a total of $200 the purchase.

Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we've been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

iPhone OS 3.0 Now Released!

Apple has released the long awaited iPhone OS 3.0 software today for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Users with iPhones will be able to get the update for free while iPod Touch owners will be charged a fee of $9.95. If you are updating to the new software, you must be using iTunes 8 or higher.

Some of the new features and improvements that come with this update are:

Cut, Copy & Paste - Quickly and easily cut, copy, and paste text from application to application. Select entire blocks of web text with a tap. Copy and paste images from the web, too.

The First Mobile Augmented Reality Browser!

The world's first mobile augmented reality browser called Layar has hit Android devices, making many owners of other mobile devices envious.

Layar shows you what is around you by displaying realtime digital information on top of reality through the camera of the mobile phone. Just flip through the directory of layers and find ATM's, bars, houses for sale, hotels and other cool stuff around you.

The application requires the use of GPS, Digital Compass and Camera within the mobile device for it to work. The new iPhone 3G S has meet these requirements and the developers of this app are working hard on porting it to the iPhone and other devices.

Other handsets and operating systems are in development with a prime focus on the iPhone 3G S.

First Gaming Controller for the iPhone?

Spanner Spencer from PocketGamer reports that the Zeemote JS1 Bluetooth controller is compatible with the iPhone. This is possibly the first Bluetooth remote that has a thumb stick and phyiscal buttons which is compatible with the iPhone.

While this is in no way official, it seems some clever clogs has now got the compact thumb stick and buttons working with the iPhone.

With the new iPhone OS 3.0 coming very soon, along with the API for Bluetooth accessory access, the possibilites of us seeing more devices like this are very high. Could this be the start of a whole new style of gaming for the iPhone?

Next iPhone to get Multi-Core ARM Processor in 2010?

CNET News reports that ARM may be able to develop multi-core ARM chips by 2010, allowing smart phones like the iPhone possible to have multi-cores.

"You'll definitely see handsets shipping with a dual-core A9 in 2010," James Bruce, wireless segment manager for ARM, said in a phone interview earlier this week, referring to the next-generation Cortex-A9 processor from ARM.

While the iPhone 3G S is believed to have the ARM Cortex A8 Processor, it still remains as a single core chip. We have seen some noticeable improvements in speed compared to the previous generations with older ARM chips and we would obviously think that having a multi-core processor will decrease our battery life. However, an ARM representative has confirmed that the dual-core ARM A9 processor will actually be more power efficient than the Cortex A8 processor.

"What we've done on the A9 is actually make it more power efficient than the A8. The dual-core A9 will be coming out on 45-nanometer rather than the (current) 65-nanometer process," Bruce said. Generally, the smaller the geometries, the faster and more power-efficient the processor is.
Bruce continued. "With the dual-core running at maximum load there's probably going to be an increase of about 10 to 20 percent in power consumption but in general day to day use you're actually going to see better battery life."

iPhone 3G S New Details and Video!

MacRumors reports that they have received word of some new iPhone 3G S details. The details are of as follows:

- 2048 x 1536 is the resolution of the pictures from the camera
- The olephobic screen of the new iPhone is noticeable and does seem to make a difference with fingerprints.
- "Speed is impressive"
- Video recording quality is just ok, dependent of ambient light.

The report also includes a video of the new iPhone 3G S in action where the new Digital Compass and Voice Memos are briefly demonstrated.

Apple Engineers Running from Q&A at WWDC?

Macro.org reports that the Apple Engineers didn't answer questions for the Q&A at the end of WWDC, most likely knowing what questions were going to be asked. Q&A were never canceled unless there was no time left. However, this year WWDC ended 45 minutes early and Apple still didn't have Q&A.

The last session of WWDC ‘09 yesterday was about publishing on the App Store. The content of sessions is under NDA, so I can’t tell you what it was about. So I’ll tell you what wasn’t in it: the audience Q&A session that succeeded nearly every other WWDC session and usually provided invaluable access to Apple employees and useful additional knowledge to attendees. The session itself blew through its lightweight examples quickly, ending 45 minutes early. The majority of the audience was clearly there for the Q&A. As people lined up at the microphones around the room, the presenter abruptly showed a simple slide with only “WWDC” in plain lettering, thanked us for coming, and bolted off the stage. The Apple engineers, usually staying around the stage for one-on-one questions, were gone. The lights came up instantly, and it was the only session that didn’t end in music. The audience was stunned.

It was a giant middle finger to iPhone developers. And that’s the closing impression that Apple gave us for WWDC.

Apple's Engineers obviously knew the questions they were going to be asked with all the unreasonable rejections of App Store submissions this year. They most likely just didn't want to face them.

iPhone 3G S to have MMS for No Extra Cost from AT&T!

One question many people have been asking after knowing that the new iPhone 3G S will have MMS is: Will AT&T will be charging an extra fee for MMS? Well, according to the new AT&T Customer FAQ, the answer is no.

Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle.

This brings another question to the table. When is it exactly going to be released? The FAQ states that it will be available later this summer, but that could mean anytime at all. This leaves another question unanswered and for all of us to just wait patiently.
