ipoque's Industry Leading Deep Packet Inspection Engine Goes Open Source

Leipzig, September 7, 2009 – ipoque, the leading European vendor of Internet traffic management solutions, today published its award-winning DPI engine as open source software. OpenDPI is derived from the commercial PACE product, ipoque's traffic classification engine that is used in its carrier-grade DPI and bandwidth management solutions. The core of OpenDPI is a software library designed to classify Internet traffic according to application protocols. Everybody can use the software and contribute to it under the conditions of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL).

“The idea behind OpenDPI is to stipulate knowledge exchange between all interested parties. We value any feedback from the open source community and everyone else. In the end we hope that we can return something to the community,“ says Hendrik Schulze, CTO of ipoque and responsible for the OpenDPI project.

Klaus Mochalski, CEO of ipoque, adds: “The continuing development of OpenDPI is a public process. Transparency was important for us from the beginning. The lack of transparency from the vendors' side has become a widespread problem in the DPI industry. Our thoughts are a bit different and that is why we decided to push this project.“

OpenDPI is one of several similar projects ipoque has initiated this summer. Recently the company has published a white paper about DPI that clarifies the technological background from the perspective of a vendor of networking products based on this technology. All major points of the DPI discussion are covered in the paper: the definition of DPI, DPI applications, myths and wrong analogies, net neutrality and the potential impact of DPI applications on society.

Why OpenDPI?

DPI has been subject to controversial debates about network neutrality and online privacy during the last few years – with a negative impact on the reputation of DPI based systems. A general problem is the lack of transparency from the vendors' side, which makes Internet users afraid of this technology. Many myths and untruths about what DPI can do, including reading and analyzing the content of user communication, are in circulation. By giving the general public access to parts of our DPI engine, we want to demonstrate that many of the alleged privacy violations simply do not happen in DPI bandwidth management systems. We believe that this openness will be to the benefit of the DPI industry.

Leipzig, September 2, 2009 – ipoque, the leading European vendor of Internet traffic management solutions, today published a new white paper, contributing to one of the most controversially discussed topics in the Internet community: Deep Packet Inspection. The document aims to clarify the technological background and cover major points surrounding the hotly debated issues behind Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). Starting with a definition of DPI, the white paper explores the DPI application and dispells some of the misconceptions surrounding “net neutrality” and privacy concerns. The potential impact of DPI applications on society is also considered.

“We believe it is a great opportunity for us to continue building awareness of DPI. As a vendor of DPI appliances, we want readers to understand this technology. Our purpose is to expell some of the myths and misunderstandings about this technology – for example, that DPI reads the content of all network packets,” says Klaus Mochalski, CEO of ipoque and co-author of the white paper.

Hendrik Schulze, CTO of ipoque and co-author of the white paper, adds: “We take the position to argue that DPI as such, is a neutral -- neither good nor bad -- technology. It rather depends on the application that utilizes DPI, how it will affect the Internet and our society.”

White Paper Launch at Broadband World Forum Europe

Klaus Mochalski will present the DPI white paper at the Broadband World Forum in Paris from 7-9 September 2009 in the workshop, “Deep Packet Inspection: Technology, Promise & Controversy: What You Need to Know.”

Leipzig, August 26, 2009 – ipoque, the leading European provider of Internet traffic management solutions, today announced that it has released two new models of its PRX Traffic Manager series. PRX-1100 and PRX-2G Traffic Manager come with enhanced features, a more flexible configuration, and functionalities that are unique in this class: fiber-optical interfaces, integrated bypass and handling of asymmetric traffic.

PRX-1100 is ipoque’s new entry-level device that inherits the advanced 64-bit multiprocessor architecture from the high-end models, which makes it ready for future growth of data rates and rising application diversity. Unique for its class, it features an integrated bypass that makes the appliance suitable for deployments even in mission-critical network segments.
Its industry-leading price-performance ratio puts DPI bandwidth management in reach of small network operators as can be found in rural areas, developing countries or also in the hospitality industry. These operators often struggle with network congestion and poor performance – while lacking the funds necessary for network upgrades. Their key requirement is a near-instant return on investment.

PRX-2G combines the abilities of two traffic manager models in one device. In addition to its copper Gigabit Ethernet ports, it also supports up to four fiber interfaces. Its high performance of up to 2 Gbit/s throughput in a small 1U chassis make it suitable for deployment in Internet service provider networks with up to 250,000 subscribers.

The new devices replace PRX-1000 and PRX-1G Traffic Managers.

Behind the Scenes

“When we started planning the new models, we tried to anticipate our customers’ expectations. With our PRX-10G and PR-5G Traffic Managers we offer premium devices to the carrier market. Small service providers, however, need affordable solutions that offer fast RoI but do not sacrifice performance and reliability,“ explains Hendrik Schulze, CTO of ipoque. Particularly PRX-1100 has been designed with these requirements in mind. A single system provides DPI bandwidth management for two network links at up to 400 Mbit/s at a very competitive price. And the integrated bypass ensures uninterrupted connectivity in case of a system failure.

PRX Traffic Manager Series

ipoque's PRX Traffic Manager offers network operators a comprehensive and cost-effective bandwidth management solution, enabling them to monitor and control network traffic per application and per subscriber. The solution makes network activities more transparent and is able to prioritize, shape, and optimize classified traffic and helps institutions of all sectors to keep up with the challenges of growing Internet traffic in their networks. PRX Traffic Manager series ranges from the small PRX-20 with 40 Mbit/s throughput to the carrier-grade PRX-10G with proven 75 Gbit/s performance.
