The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced over 3,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2023 competition to more than 3,800.

This year, 153 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 81 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

Three District 204 seniors from Neuqua Valley High School received National Merit Scholarships. They are Emily Chiou, Nayana V. Gaonkar, and Samuel D. Kovar.

College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are a part of the distinguished group of more than 7,140 high school seniors who will receive National Merit Scholarships for college undergraduate study worth nearly $28 million. Earlier this spring, NMSC announced winners of corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.

Diane Guskey has been involved with many volunteer activities over the last 13 years. Because of her extensive involvement in Gregory’s PTA, she is being honored as the May BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month.

Diane has three children in the district, a fourth grader at Clow, and two children that attend Gregory Middle School. Her family of five moved to Naperville 13 years ago and she has been very fortunate to volunteer with the Naperville Park District, various committees throughout the City of Naperville, and Indian Prairie School District.

She is currently serving as the secretary of the Gregory PTA board and helps in the Library Media Center. She makes copies for teachers and has done concession tables for events at Gregory. Over the years, Diane has also served as the Gregory PTA president and treasurer.

Diane enjoys volunteering because she loves being a part of her children’s education. She loves to give back and set a direct example for her children to always be one to lend a hand where it is needed.
BMO Harris Bank is helping District 204 recognize one volunteer each month who has generously given his or her time to support District 204’s students and schools. To celebrate these outstanding volunteers, BMO Harris Bank is donating $1,000 to the volunteer’s school.

Today, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) announced this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners. The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned— scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)— contributions and leadership in school and community activities— an essay written by the Finalist— and a recommendation written by a high school official.

District 204 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship Winners include:

Metea Valley: Rajas M. Gandhi and Leisha Garg
Neuqua Valley: Anika Prasad and Derek B. Sisbarro

At the May 1, 2023 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Louis Lee was appointed as the new Deputy Superintendent for District 204 effective July 1, 2023. For the past three years, Lee has served as the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. In his new role, Lee will oversee the curriculum and instruction, teaching and learning, and student services departments.

Dr. Adrian B. Talley, superintendent of Indian Prairie School District 204, said Lee was chosen for his ability to collaborate with district administrators as well as implement and coordinate policy and procedures for over 3,000 staff members.

“Dr. Lee is an exemplary educational leader who demonstrates the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with people,” said Talley. “He demonstrates the ability to listen to multiple perspectives and effectively collaborate in the mission of education for all students.”

During his time as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Lee served as lead negotiator for the current four-year (2022-2026) collective bargaining agreement in place with the Indian Prairie Education Association. In alignment with the District’s five-year strategic plan, Lee worked to increase access to the Human Resources department with the HR In The Buildings program. Lee also established the Grow Your Own Teachers (GYOT) program to combat the ongoing teacher shortage and promote diversity among Indian Prairie teaching staff. In the two years the program has been in existence, over 230 students have participated at the high school level with over 100 students involved in clubs at the middle school level. Lee has presented at numerous state and national conferences on inclusive hiring practices, recruitment strategies, and Indian Prairie’s GYOT program.

Prior to his role in human resources at District 204, Lee served as the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, High Schools since he started in the district in 2014. Before that, he served as principal at Oswego East High School for the 2013-2014 school year— principal at District 204’s Granger Middle School for two years— and associate principal at Lincoln-Way East High School for seven years. Lee also worked at Lewis University as an adjunct professor from 2009-2014 and was a science teacher at Cooke Magnet School in Waukegan School District 60 from 2001-2003.

Lee holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a master's degree in education and a doctorate in educational leadership from Lewis University.

His new position begins July 1. He will replace Doug Eccarius who will serve as the new superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 89 in Glen Ellyn.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of the first group of winners in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarships Program. Approximately 840 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 107 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations.
Two District 204 high school seniors were recently awarded 2023 National Merit Scholarships.

Congratulations to the following recipients:

Neuqua Valley High School: Aruv A. Dand and Karthikeya Ramaraju

Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.

Funding for these National Merit Scholarships is provided by corporate organizations that represent nearly all sectors of American industry. Sponsors from the business community have underwritten awards offered in all 68 competitions, expending or committing more than $858 million to support the intellectual development of the nation’s scholastically talented youth.

Jessica Faber has been an amazing volunteer at Young Elementary School. Because of her dedication to teachers and students at Young, she is being named the April BMO Harris Bank District 204 Volunteer of the Month.

Jessica has three children in the district, a third grader at Young Elementary School, a seventh grader at Granger Middle School, and a freshman at Metea Valley High School.

Jessica enjoys volunteering as it is a great way for her to support the school community, teachers, and students within the district. The most rewarding aspect of volunteering is that she meets other parents, our district staff, and teachers. She feels that we have great teachers within the district and sees how hard they work to support and teach the students, including her three children.

Her nomination states, “Jessica continually creates a community of volunteers that want to be involved. In the last year, Young Elementary was at a critical point where all the current volunteers were graduating. She reached out, engaged younger families, welcomed new ones, and helped build the PTA board back up to the successful group it is today.”

Swatting calls have been an issue for schools and school districts throughout the country over the past several months. Today, District 204 was the target of a swatting call, along with several other area schools, and we wanted to make you aware of the situation in the event that this happens in our schools again.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 12, 2023, a call was received that is believed to have originated overseas. The caller claimed to be a teacher at Waubonsie Valley High School and was reporting an active threat involving a student offender. When asked additional questions by the dispatcher, the individual hung up. Numerous school administrators, the SRO, and additional APD officers immediately responded and were quickly able to discern this was a hoax. The APD did a complete search of the school and determined it was clear. The entire situation was resolved in under ten minutes and there was no disruption within the building.

As swatting calls continue to occur throughout the country, and are now happening within our local community, we are asking parents to continue the practice of not sharing false information on social media. If an incident occurs in your child’s school, we will make you aware of the details as soon as possible.

Currently no other swatting calls have been attributed to District 204 schools. We appreciate the prompt work of the Aurora Police Department to ensure our schools remain safe.
