The AOC i2353Fh is a very impressive 23in monitor. Almost impossibly thin, tastefully styled and finished in brushed aluminium, the i2353Fh from AOC is one of the best looking displays we've tested.

It's not perfect, but at this price the AOC i2353Fh exceeds expectations at every turn. It outperforms any TN-based display and its expensive looks belie its budget price. The wide viewing angles of its IPS panel technology make it a great choice for anyone editing photos or video on a budget.

IPS LCD panels, with their amazing viewing angles and better colours, have traditionally been the preserve of high-end business and design monitors, so we were delighted when we saw the AOC i2353Fh. Despite costing around £150, this 23in Full HD (1,920x1,080) has an IPS panel.

The i2353Fh is incredible value for an IPS monitor and has stunning image quality; however, LG's IPS-based IPS235V is cheaper still and has a wealth of colour options, so it pips the i2353Fh to an award.

NEC's MultiSync PA271W is a 27in widescreen LCD display aimed at colour professionals. With its 2560x1440 resolution, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, multiple inputs, and plethora of tools for attaining (and maintaining) accurate colour, it appears that NEC has hit the target.

For many, the displays Apple offers in its iMacs and the27in LED Cinema Display are absolutely fine - better than fine, really. They deliver bright, bold colours and fit right in with the Mac aesthetic. But for other users who require a little more control over the on-screen color, who want a little more flexibility in terms of ergonomic adjustments, who are sensitive to the glare from glossy screens, or use a Mac without a Mini DisplayPort connection, an Apple display just won't fill the bill. The DreamColor tag on the HP DreamColor LP2480zx - it appears only in marketing, and not on the monitor itself - comes from a collaboration between HP and SKG Dreamworksmovie studio.
The studio wanted a panel with a wide colour range and good linearity suitable for movie editing as well as stills, and the DreamColor LP2480zx is the result - or so we're told.
We're also told that this 24in panel displays billions of colours, which may be true, but it's neither useful nor unique. Most high-end panels include 12-bit colour control rather than the DreamColor LP2480zx's 10-bit control but your eyes can't distinguish billions of distinct colours anyway.

The good: The Apple Cinema Display's high resolution and screen coating gives it not only great performance in movies and games, but also in everyday tasks. The monitor works seamlessly when connected to a recent model MacBook, and provides a charging station and three USB ports. And it just looks really slick on a desktop.
The bad: Thanks to Apple's decision to only include a Mini DisplayPort connection, the LED Cinema Display can only be used with Macs from late 2008 and on. The design is pretty simple but modern look. There is a bezel, stand and base are black. Like the other IPS monitor, ViewSonic VP2365wb LCD IPS Monitor also offers the ergonomic adjustments. There is a smooth and easy for a height adjustment, Tilt and rotate to operate. The rotated portrait mode was nice and smooth.

Viewsonic advertises its VP2365wb as a professional display, so were absolutely gobsmacked when we saw the price. At only £164, it's the cheapest 1,920 x 1,080 23in IPS-based monitor we've seen.
Next to some of its pricier competitors, though, the VP2365wb looks entirely utilitarian. The all-black, matte plastic finish is hardly luxurious and the buttons below the screen look distinctly old hat.

We wouldn’t complain if we never had to review a cheap TN LCD panel ever again. Our experience with ViewSonic’s VP2365wb, on the other hand, has taught us we shouldn’t assume that the mere presence of an 8-bit IPS panel will ensure top-drawer performance. On the third hand, the fact that numerous online retailers are selling this monitor for just $300 renders it a solid value.

Its 10-bit IPS panel is capable of displaying a staggering 1.07 billion colours – if you have a 10-bit workstation-class graphics card, that is – and is partnered with a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. HP also claims the monitor covers 99% of the Adobe RGB colour space.

Alas, it offers none of the high-end features of many of its professional competitors. There’s no onscreen display, nor programmable look-up tables to allow for hardware calibration. The front-mounted buttons do nothing more than flick between the DVI and DisplayPort inputs, adjust brightness, engage dynamic contrast and turn the monitor on and off.

Fit for a Dream Machine

You might recall seeing three of HP’s ZR30w 30-inch displays gracing the cover of our September “Dream Machine” issue. Considering our theme for that build was raw, wanton power, picking the ZR30w was an easy decision.

We haven’t been this wowed by a display since we laid eyes on NEC’s LCD3090 WQXi, which we reviewed in our March 2010 issue. But that 30-incher costs nearly twice as much as this one. Both monitors are based on S-IPS panels, as all the best LCD monitors are, and both deliver native resolution of 2560x1600 (a 16:10 aspect ratio). But the ZR30w’s real claim to fame is color resolution of 10 bits per color per pixel (HP defines this as 30 bits per pixel), which enables it to produce 1.07 billion displayable colors. That’s 100 percent of the sRGB color gamut and 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut.

The 30” segment of the LCD market demands the best of the best. It’s indisputably the ring in which every manufacturer wages battle with its flagship monitor. Solid execution here usually translates to solid performance for smaller size panels in the same lineup. Suffice it to say that HP’s 30 inch ZR series successor to the LP3065 doesn’t disappoint.

We would’ve liked to see just a bit more color accuracy, but the tradeoff for a dramatically bigger gamut is a good one to make. The ZR30w blew past the advertised 99% of AdobeRGB, coming in at just over 111% of the volume. It’s important to note that HP likely means coverage overlap of 99%, which the ZR30w does meet. But heck, having a volume bigger than the AdobeRGB volume is more notable. In person, the ZR30w is impressive all around. It’s bright, contrasty, and has colors that put my daily use monitors and others I’ve got laying around to shame; not an easy thing to do.

IPS (or In-Plane Switching) monitors are one of the best all-around monitors. Because it’s provides fantastic viewing angles and accurate colors. In-plane switching technology was developed in 1996 by Hitachi Ltd. It was developed to improve on the poor viewing angle and further the poor color reproduction of TN technology (or TN panels).

IPS monitor technology was developed to replace the TN technology.

It’s different from TN panels that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular. This change gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good color reproduction of the display. By which it can produce a much greater colour range as 1 billion colours and have a higher resolution as 2560X1600.
