MoneyTree Asia Pacific is all about helping parents future-proof their kids.

They recently hosted an experiential session for invited parents called ‘The Future is Racing Ahead : At Least You Are Doing Something About It!’. The session was a hit with all the guests.

Parents were involved in a discussion on future-readying kids together with Michael Reyes, CEO & Founder of MoneyTree Asia Pacific & Quantum Intelligence, Dr. Hamidah Helmei, Head of Secondary at Idrissi International School and Carmen Kong, Board Certified Behaviour Analyst & Founder of the ABA Project.

They talked about the challenges kids face in today’s world, like how AI is taking over many jobs and schools are overloading kids with work and studies, which is causing them too much stress. Kids are even breaking down, and 1 in 3 kids in many countries have mental health problems.

Michael said at the event, ‘At MoneyTree Asia Pacific, we want to change this for young children by teaching them Future-Ready skills.’

"Our session today was a sampler session designed to raise parents' awareness of the threats & give kids a sampler experience to our interactive workshops that will teach them Future-Ready Skills."

Each parent was encouraged to attend this session together with a child between the ages of 8 - 16 years as they delved into important topics such as mental health issues among teens, tips for parents to protect their kids and identifying factors contributing to the problem.

The children's interactive training workshop touched on basic financial literacy knowledge on smart spending habits, skills to enhance memory retention and skills to remain calm & approach challenges carefully.

"I feel it is really beneficial for parents to find ways to connect with their children as mental health is something that we need to give more emphasis to, not only for the kids but for parents too," she added.

Ayu Rafikah, mother of seven, agreed and added that financial literacy and future-readying kids are truly important in navigating the real problems that children would face in their lives. "The session today was an eye-opener to how parents can ensure their children are ready for the challenges they would soon face and be ready to handle whatever comes their way in a positive manner."

The session ended on a high note with a screening of the movie Moana 2 for both parents and their kids. It was a fun way to wrap up the day and take home some valuable lessons.

Well, this year, the 2024 edition of HEINEKEN Malaysia’s National Star Academy Championship and Training is once again calling its partner bartenders to showcase their skills and earn a spot to compete on the global stage! Since 2018, the Star Academy programme has kicked off its seventh edition to train and enhance the skills of local bartenders. The focus is on mastering the art of the perfect pour for beers in HEINEKEN Malaysia’s portfolio, particularly Heineken® and Guinness.

The National Champion will get the opportunity to compete on the world stage at the Global Bartender Finals in Amsterdam! This year's training sessions are held in major cities across Malaysia, including Selangor, Johor, Perak, Penang, Sabah, and Sarawak, engaging more than 1,300 bartenders. Did you know the largest halal-certified kopitiam chain in Malaysia, OldTown White Coffee recently celebrated the opening of its new Heritage Centre in Ipoh? It’s a fanfare of arts and cultural showcases, commemorating its Artists Heritage Collaboration Project. Read on below.

OldTown Heritage Centre Opens!

The brand unveiled its inaugural Artists Heritage Collaboration Project, an initiative by OldTown White Coffee to elevate its Heritage Centre as a “living” heritage where artists are able to showcase any pieces of art that honour the sweet-smelling legacies of Ipoh white coffee.

Spread across three floors of the neo-colonial structure are an eco-driven Earthcare Cafe, the OIdTown Heritage Gallery, and a retail outlet that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the history and heritage of white coffee.

The Earthcare Cafe will serve as the brand’s flagship farm-to-table dining concept, featuring a new menu that is distinct from the brand’s familiar kopitiam fare, with an emphasis on ethically and locally-sourced produce, such as free-range eggs from cageless chicken farms.

A Celebration of Shared Legacies

“The OldTown Heritage Centre is not just a place to enjoy great coffee and food. It's a celebration of our shared history and values, as well as a platform for fostering community and environmental stewardship," commented Dawn Liew, CEO of Kopitiam Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd.

Lim Pui Wan, also known as “PicoWorm”, a miniature artist famed for creating exceedingly intricate and realistic dioramas that could fit the palm of a person.

Jeffrey Lim, a multi-talented photographer, cultural artist, and heritage enthusiast who contributed a vintage coffee brewing station, a collection of antique coffee cups, and a “Traditional Kopi Lineage” photo installation.

Azmi Hussin, a cartoonist celebrated for his quirky depictions of local life and the Malaysian record-holder for creating the country’s longest single comic strip, “Saga Kami”.

As part of OTWC's Artists Heritage Collaboration Project, the brand recognizes local artists who contributed to the Heritage Centre.

The OldTown Heritage Centre opens in the midst of Visit Perak Year 2024, and is primed to cater a fresh influx of local and international tourists keen on enjoying what was recently announced as one of the world’s best coffees.

Following the recent announcement of the Hanoi – Melbourne route earlier this month, the Hanoi – Sydney service is set to commence operations in June. What’s to look forward to at The Exchange TRX this Raya?

Be greeted by decorative elements at the entrances and throughout the interior of The Exchange TRX. There’s a giant installation at TRX City Park inspired by a dish most synonymous with Hari Raya – the humble ketupat.

The ‘Magnificence of Raya’ will take over Central Exchange and will feature a grand kampung house – a stunning manifestation of traditional Malay architecture, design, and motifs. The star element for the campaign will be Malaysian batik, featuring designs which are heavily inspired by the natural beauty of Malaysia and intricately imbued with floral motifs, headlined by the nationally venerated Bunga Raya.

Central Exchange will also be the epicentre of cultural experiences for guests. Guests intending to take a break from their Raya preparations can enjoy traditional silat and wayang kulit performances, or musical acts from a caklempong and kompang troupe.

2024 is here! Here's some heartwarming news to kickstart a great new year. Award-winning non-profit organisation, Malaysian Humanitarian Foundation (“MHF”) is working closely with Malaysia’s leading educational non-profit organisation, Teach for Malaysia (“TFM”) in identifying students from B40 households to offer scholarships to attend SuperCamp.

For the December edition which ran from 18 to 22 December 2023 at Paradise Valley Broga Resort, Semenyih, Selangor, seven (7) students from several schools within Klang Valley were shortlisted by TFM to attend SuperCamp.

“We work on a system to extend opportunities like this to students from the underserved communities. Not having the resources to attend programmes like this should not hinder you from unlocking your full potential and achieving greatness in the future. We hope that from 2024 onwards, we can extend the scholarships to at least 50 students annually,” Henry Teh Kok Kheng, Executive Director of MHF (郑国庆) says.

Empowering the future leaders of Malaysia

Vassenthen A/L Devendren, 16, was filled with excitement to be selected for SuperCamp. The SMK (L) Methodist Sentul student candidly shares that his self-esteem took a hit during the transition from a Tamil school to a national school after his UPSR, which left him dissatisfied with the result. He also feels less confident due to his larger physical build.

Vassenthen wants to make his mother, Mogana Sunthari proud by doing well at school.

“I was disappointed to receive my UPSR result and decided to make a change. I started following a strict regime where I only allowed minimal time to rest and spend time with my family. Being the eldest in my family also means that I have the big brother role to play,” he says. He also continues to study Tamil subjects to honour his Indian heritage as he aspires to excel in his mother tongue, while improving his proficiency in English and Bahasa Melayu.

His mother, Mogana Sunthari A/P Govindan, 41 is also surprised to see how much time Vassenthen spends in his room studying. “Everyday, after school he retreats to his room to study. Sometimes, he only texts or calls me on the phone when he wants to eat. I can see that he is driven to be successful in the future, so I’ll continue to support him,” she says. “Interestingly, though, he doesn't aspire to become a doctor! He mentioned that the COVID-19 experience has truly scared him!”

Another scholar from SMK Seksyen 27, Shah Alam, Maizatulakma Lisa Aqilah Abdullah, is a big fan of Korean culture, particularly the food and fashion. Despite her passion for entertainment, she strongly believes that her peers should set their priorities right from such a young age.

Maizatulakma aspires to become a teacher and found motivation to do better from attending SuperCamp.

“I know a lot of students my age want to be content creators and influencers, but I honestly hope to be a teacher one day. So, I’ll work hard towards this goal, acknowledging that I can be a bit lazy at times. However, after attending SuperCamp, I really found motivation to do better,” says the 15-year old student.

“Yes, she can be lazy sometimes,” laughs Maizatulakma’s mother, Zaidatulnisa binti Salleh, 39. “But she’s really a good girl. She’s the eldest in the family and takes care of her younger siblings. She makes sure that all her homework is completed before coming home. She is also actively working for an NGO on the side, something that she picks up from me. I too am actively working for several NGOs that empower children from the B40 group with education around our neighborhood.”

Zaidatulnisa also hopes that the Malaysian education system will bring back examinations for the students. “I see examinations as a way to motivate students to apply what they have learnt at school. Examinations provide a quantifiable and measurable method for parents to assess their children's progress at school. It's not about making comparisons of whose child is better or smarter.”

Zuraida Zulkifli, 48, is a proud mother to Daliya Safeera Ramli, 15, a student at SMK Shah Alam, Bukit Jelutong. “She is very quiet at home and likes to keep to herself. She only approaches us when she needs help. She is different from her older sister who was a prefect and active at school. Her sister also attended a boarding school,” says the full-time housewife.

“I don’t really want to attend boarding school like my sister,” Daliya laughs. “I’m actually an introvert and I’m afraid to make mistakes, especially when speaking in front of the crowd. Even when studying, I rely on the Internet and Youtube videos when I hit a wall. It’s not always a bad thing as it allows students like me to learn at our own pace. Now that I have attended Supercamp, I feel more confident, especially in overcoming my fear of public speaking, and I am excited to share my opinions on various issues”.

Senior Assistant Administrator from Daliya’s school, Tuan Saripah Nor Riha Tuan Jaafar is extremely proud that one of her students was selected to receive a full scholarship to attend SuperCamp. “When TFM reached out to us to share the information about SuperCamp, we submitted 8 applications and were so delighted to know that despite the limited vacancies, Daliya made it through,” she says. “Daliya is a very dedicated student who attended all meetings set by TFM prior to her selection. I hope that she will return to our school and share everything she has learned here with her friends. We look forward to seeing more of our students attending SuperCamp in the future”.

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has laws in place to protect the rights of workers, including domestic helpers. According to the MOM, maids must work no more than eight hours a day if they work five days a week. Maids that work less than five days a week may work nine hours a day at most. Employers are also legally required to give maids one rest day a week.

Before hiring your maid, discuss what hours of the day you expect her to work. You should also discuss which day of the week will serve as her rest day and write it out in her contract for clarity. In the event that you need your maid to work on her rest day, you should give her a substitute rest day at some point in the same month.

It’s likewise humane to let your maid take short breaks from her tasks throughout the day. As long as she’s alert and responsive whenever you need her to do something, there’s nothing wrong with her taking time to rest every few hours or so.

Provide her with detailed instructions about which doors in the house must remain locked, what parts of the house are off-limits, and when to switch the lights on and off. Do also leave her clear instructions about receiving unexpected guests so that she knows what to say to someone who shows up unannounced and whether it’s safe to let them in.
