Cardiovascular disease is the world’s number one killer so it’s clear to me that the chances of dying from either a stroke or heart attack is very much on the cards…Or is it?

When the blood vessels that take oxygen and nutrients to the brain are either blocked with a clot or they erupt this leads to a stroke which is a type of cardiovascular disease. When this happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood it requires for oxygen that it needs to survive.

There are many risk factors for someone having a stroke or heart attack. Bad diet, lack of exercise, smoking, obeseity and stress are just some of the reasons that contribute to cardiovascular diseases.

Most of us don’t even know we have a problem until it’s too late. However, some people get warning signs of an impending stroke but you have to make sure that you are aware of them so that you are not putting yourself at risk of even more problems later on. The warning signs may only last a few moments but they may signal a serious conditon that you need to have checked out by your doctor right away.

Some warning signs of a stroke are numbness of the face, leg or arm on one side of the body. You may also notice problems in your vision or a severe headache that comes on all at once. Would Pride Stop You Saving a Stroke Victim?

Bill’s wife Jane, normally a fit and active lady, rose from her chair to walk into the kitchen, on the way she felt dizzy and fell to the floor. Bill rushed over to help her, through slurred speech she said she could’nt move her legs. Was Jane having a Stroke? What would you do? What did Bill think at the time? 

For the third time in a few months I’ve listened to people who were in a similar situation say they were worried it was a stroke, but they would feel stupid if they called out emergency assistance and it wasn’t. Don’t hesitate to call for medical help if you see any of these signs:

• Sudden numbness in the face, arm or leg
• Their face eye or mouth may droop on one side
• The person is sruggling with their speech
• They may have difficulty understanding others
• Do they feel dizzy or look and sound confused
• Tiredness and loss of coordination are also signs

If diagnosis turns out to be something less life threatening that’s great news. But just think how you would feel if you didn’t act quickly and it had been a stroke or heart attack and your loved one died?  Jane was one of the lucky ones!
