I stumbled across a post from Scooter Works on the facebooks Tuesday afternoon, and must admit – this is the first I’ve heard about an automatic Stella…

I found a bit more information on the soon-to-be-released Stella Automatic after a little digging. For all intents and purposes the Stella is an LML Star4 that was originally introduced at the EICMA in 2012. It features a 4-stroke 125cc engine mated to a variator (automatic) transmission developed and provided by Adler.

Some frame modifications were needed to fit the new motor into the old-style body, but the weight reduction should allow a bit more agility. The rear brake is no longer operated by a foot pedal, but has been moved to a lever on the left side of the headset, replacing what would normally be the clutch lever on the manual transmission models.

Fuel capacity has been increased to 1.85 gallons, and the company claims it should get more than 100 miles per gallon.

If you’re into the classic look but not into changing gears, the Stella Automatic might be worth a look.

There is relatively no information on the automatic to be found at the Genuine Scooters website, but Scooter Works has some details. More information on the LML Star 4 Automatica can be found at ZigWheels.

Here’s the official video for the BMW C Evolution Electric Scooter… And video is just what it is. No techno beats in the background or voice-over here. You just get to listed to the spacey sound of BMW’s answer to the electric Maxi-Scooter. The C Evolution is reported to be coming to North America some time in 2014. If it’s anything like the rest of the BMW scooter lineup, it will likely be beyond the budget of the typical scooter enthusiast. But hey, whatever floats your scoot.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the look of the 946 and I don’t much care for the look of most modern scooters. But, $10K? Seriously?

Will you buy a 946?

While lane splitting has been legal in California for some time, the guidelines and rules surrounding it are only now being clearly defined. There are five basics outlined along with a clear explanation of the benefits of each.

Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.

It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster — danger increases as overall speed increases.

Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes.

Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.

Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.

The guide also includes what they’re calling “The Four R’s”.

Be Reasonable, be Responsible, be Respectful, be aware of all Roadway and traffic conditions.

As someone who extolls the benefits of lane splitting and uses it on a regular basis, I can tell you firsthand that people in cars sometimes go out of their way to get into yours. The list includes several additional rules for motorists. The following suggestions make perfect sense to riders, but reminding drivers of the rules might help make things better for everyone. I think I’m going to print these up on business cards and hand them out in traffic.

Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.

Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).

Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).
