Don’t get me wrong, I like the look of the 946 and I don’t much care for the look of most modern scooters. But, $10K? Seriously?

While lane splitting has been legal in California for some time, the guidelines and rules surrounding it are only now being clearly defined. There are five basics outlined along with a clear explanation of the benefits of each.

1. Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.
2. It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster — danger increases as overall speed increases.
3. Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes.
4. Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.
5. Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.

The guide also includes what they’re calling “The Four R’s”.

Be Reasonable, be Responsible, be Respectful, be aware of all Roadway and traffic conditions.

As someone who extolls the benefits of lane splitting and uses it on a regular basis, I can tell you firsthand that people in cars sometimes go out of their way to get into yours. The list includes several additional rules for motorists. The following suggestions make perfect sense to riders, but reminding drivers of the rules might help make things better for everyone. I think I’m going to print these up on business cards and hand them out in traffic.

• Motorists should not take it upon themselves to discourage motorcyclists from lane splitting.
• Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal (CVC 22400).
• Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcycle is illegal (CVC 22517).

I know, the words “folding electric scooter” don’t usually bring to mind anything that I’m going to be interested in either, but this one is pretty cool…

The Moveo is the latest prototype from the non-profit Antro Group in Hungary. The carbon-composite body is designed to fold up and roll away like a suitcase with the integrated handle, saving owners money on gas and parking. The Moveo weighs in around 55 pounds with a top speed of 28 mph and a range of 21.5 miles.

The Antro Group is actively seeking an investment partner to start production of the Moveo early next year. If everything goes accordingly, they hopes to make the Moveo available for around $3100 US in 2014.
