Postdoctoral Fellow in Socioeconomic Assessment of Cumulative Offshore Wind Farm Impacts

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in socioeconomic dimensions of cumulative offshore wind farm impacts, starting on 1 November 2026. The position focuses on assessing the cumulative impacts of offshore wind farm development on marine socioeconomic systems, while contributing to interdisciplinary research integrating social and natural science perspectives. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an international research project addressing interactions between offshore wind farm expansion, marine sustainability, and sectors such as fisheries and aquaculture. The position is based at the Aarhus University Risø Campus, located near Roskilde, approximately 35 km west of Copenhagen.

Expected Start Date

Expected start date and duration of employment

This is a 2–year position from 1 November 2026 or as soon possible.

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an interdisciplinary project investigating the ecological and socioeconomic cumulative impacts of offshore wind farm (OWF) development in marine systems. The project aims to assess how expanding OWFs influence marine ecosystems and socioeconomic sectors by integrating ecological food-web effects with economic impact pathways. The overall ambition is to support adaptive management and policy development for sustainable offshore wind expansion and marine multi-use.

The position will focus on the socioeconomic dimensions of cumulative OWF development, including interactions with marine sectors such as fisheries and aquaculture, and their long-term implications under future development scenarios. The successful candidate will contribute to the assessment of cumulative impacts and trade-offs associated with offshore wind expansion, while contributing to the development of integrated ecological–economic perspectives in close collaboration with project partners across disciplines.

The work will involve analysing and evaluating key socioeconomic interactions and impacts linked to offshore wind development, considering both direct and indirect effects as well as broader links to ecosystem services and marine resource use. The project combines synthesis of existing knowledge, analytical assessment, and engagement with relevant stakeholders and policy contexts.

The project outcomes are expected to contribute to regional research and policy processes related to offshore wind farm development and marine sustainability and to support evidence-based approaches for balancing renewable energy development with marine ecosystem and socioeconomic sustainability.

Deadline

28 June 2026

PhD Fellowship: Beyond GDP, Well-being, and Sustainability

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD fellowship in Environmental and Development Studies at Palacký University Olomouc (Czech Republic).

Application deadline: 15 August 2026.

Topic: Beyond GDP: Assessing Well-being and Sustainability Metrics, Frameworks, and Linkages

Dissertation Focus

The dissertation will analyze and critically assess selected “Beyond GDP” metrics and conceptual frameworks (Jansen et al., 2024; van den Bergh, 2022; Barrington-Leigh and Escande, 2018). Candidates are encouraged to work within a dual framework distinguishing current well-being (Frijters et al., 2024; Blanchflower and Bryson, 2024) from future well-being, i.e., sustainability (Neumayer, 2025; McLaughlin et al., 2024; Syrovátka, 2020). This distinction also enables research on cross-cutting issues, such as inequalities in well-being (Pourpakdelfekr et al., 2026) and disparities in the use of and access to environmental resources (Chancel, 2022). Candidates may additionally engage with integrative frameworks spanning both dimensions, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (van Vuuren et al., 2022; Hametner, 2022; Usubiaga-Liaño et al., 2024) or the Safe and Just Space (Fanning et al., 2022; Alleisa and Bakshi, 2023; Gupta et al., 2023).

Research Approach

In consultation with the supervisor, candidates will prepare a research draft outlining the approach and proposing two to four research questions, with one developed in detail. An interdisciplinary approach, combining quantitative analyses of metrics with other appropriate methods, is encouraged. The dissertation will comprise four academic papers linked by a commentary, targeting journals such as Ecological Economics, Social Indicators Research, and Global Sustainability.

Available results

Results are available for the world and all countries, including ecological footprint of national production, international trade, and national consumption.

Specific categories

Results are also available for specific crops, livestock, forest products, fish species caught or cultured, traded commodities, and carbon dioxide emissions by activity and international transportation.

Research applications

Results can inform ecological economics with respect to sustainability, account of natural assets and environmental flows, environmentally extended input output analysis, landscape trade-offs with respect to achieving net zero emissions, and the quantification of planetary boundaries at various spatial scales.

Related statistics

The data can also be related to other statistics such as Human Development Index, Sustainable Development Goals Index, and life satisfaction. For example, the data can help to evaluate the extent to which countries have become more, or less, happy as their ecological footprint of consumption grew, or shrank.

National results

National results can inform subnational assessments of ecological footprint and biocapacity, in combination with local data about land cover and use and production or local consumption.

Discussion Questions

Should environmentally driven companies, such as Patagonia, reduce their environmental footprint by producing less stuff overall, or by making better stuff, shifting impact reduction from total output to each individual product—for example, by lowering per-jacket emissions? Does moving from “less stuff” to “better stuff” amount to a betrayal of environmental commitments?

Podcast Overview

In the widely circulated podcast channel Economics for Rebels, hosted by Alexandra Köves, President of the European Society for Ecological Economics, Professor Alejandro (Alec) Agafonow argues that reducing total planetary pressure by selling fewer goods can paradoxically increase global emissions. If companies like Patagonia cede market share, they may create space for competitors with far higher per-unit emissions, most notably fast-fashion companies such as Shein. From this perspective, every jacket Patagonia may choose not to sell becomes an opportunity for a significantly more polluting alternative to enter the market.

System Change Issues

Other provocative issues concerning system change through the reconfiguration of firms’ property rights—such as Patagonia’s recent restructuring—are also examined.

Early bird registrations – Towards a just and habitable world: exploring the role of technology | Lausanne, 2–5 June 2026

Conference Announcement

Registrations are now open for the conference “Towards a just and habitable world: exploring the role of technology,” taking place at the University of Lausanne on 2-5 June 2026.

Conference Focus

In an era of polycrisis the need to interrogate the role of technologies in shaping our shared future has never been more urgent. This interdisciplinary conference will explore technological systems in all their diversity — from water and energy infrastructures, agroecology and nature-based solutions to synthetic biology, and digital technologies. Which technologies can foster well-being within planetary and local boundaries, and which of them carry the risk of exacerbating ecological overshoot and social injustice? How do we navigate between illusions of high-tech salvation and the urgent need for democratic, grounded and large-scale responses to the hard limits of adaptation?

Opening Forum

The conference opens on the afternoon of June 2nd, with a dedicated opening forum "Research and higher education for just transformations in turbulent times". This forum offers an opportunity for the academic community to explore the interconnected pressures facing universities and research today — including threats to academic freedom, the spread of AI, the corporatization of higher education, and the fragmentation of international collaboration — and to share the diverse responses and resilience strategies emerging across our communities.

Registration Information

You can find the conference programme here and how to register here: https://pathways.futureearth.org/sustainability-science-conference/.

PhD Scholarship - University College Cork, Ireland

The Cork University Business School (CUBS) and the Sustainability Institute of University College Cork, invites motivated and talented graduates with outstanding academic records to apply for a PhD Scholarship for a project entitled “Socio-Economic Analysis of Co-Operative Models for AD Systems in Ireland”.

Research Scope

This PhD will investigate alternative co-ownership models, such as joint ventures and revenue sharing arrangements, as well as broader business ecosystem solutions involving multiple actors, including agro-parks, integrated environmental biorefineries, and upcycling entrepreneurship.
