PhD Scholarship - University College Cork, Ireland

The Cork University Business School (CUBS) and the Sustainability Institute of University College Cork, invites motivated and talented graduates with outstanding academic records to apply for a PhD Scholarship for a project entitled “Socio-Economic Analysis of Co-Operative Models for AD Systems in Ireland”.

Research Scope

This PhD will investigate alternative co-ownership models, such as joint ventures and revenue sharing arrangements, as well as broader business ecosystem solutions involving multiple actors, including agro-parks, integrated environmental biorefineries, and upcycling entrepreneurship. It will include a socio-economic analysis to assess the viability, social acceptability, and wider impacts of these models in supporting the establishment and operation of AD plants and integrated AD-biorefineries in Ireland. The research will also evaluate barriers and enablers (including regulatory, infrastructural, resource, strategic, and knowledge-related factors) affecting co-operative and business models. By integrating socio-economic and regional analysis, the PhD aims to generate insights into how innovative organizational structures can enhance regional resilience, promote sustainable economic development, and foster community-driven solutions.

This PhD will complement and integrate a wide range of research and scholarship activities that University College Cork is currently undertaking within the Sustainable Future initiative.

Requirements

The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated with an ability to work independently and be willing to undertake recommended coursework.

Abstracts & Kick-off Event: “Justice Dimensions of Sustainability Transformations in Rural Areas”

Call for Abstracts

(Deadline: April 1, 2026)

International Conference on „Justice Dimensions of Sustainability
Transformations in Rural Areas“ organized by the Ph.D. college PK
60 at the University of Vechta
8–9 July 2026

Sustainability transformations have become a central topic in current scientific and societal
discourses and are largely perceived in a positive light. However, they always come with so-
cial effects (including “transformation pains”) and raise questions of social justice that are, so
far, insufficiently understood, empirically researched, and reflected upon. This has conse-
quences for the legitimacy of shaping and governing such processes.

As part of the kick-off event of the doctoral programme „Justice Dimensions of Sustainability
Transformations in Rural Areas“ funded by the Hans Böckler Foundation, we are hosting a
conference under the same title at the University of Vechta.

Kick-off event

On July 8, a kick-off event for the Ph.D. college will take place, featuring two keynote lectures
followed by a panel discussion related to the program's overarching topic. The doctoral fel-
lows will also present their research topics.

Scientific conference

On July 9, a scientific conference will be held. We welcome submissions for presentations
related to the following thematic strands, and beyond, until April 1, 2026:

Transformation of the energy sector, energy affordability, and new (in-)justice rela-
tions between urban and rural areas;

Spatial justice: equivalent living conditions, social places, and local resilience;

Justice implications of socio-technical transition and innovation processes (e.g.,
through digitalization or bioeconomy);

Supra-regional conservation policies and local justice implications (e.g., regarding ur-
ban-rural relations or between the Global North and South);

Gender justice in shaping transformation processes;

The role of trade unions in shaping just sustainability transformations;

Uncertainties regarding the “right” ethical standard (normative uncertainty) as a practi-
cal and theoretical challenge in shaping just transformations;

Risk and risk perception in transformation processes;

among others.

Abstract submission

The call for abstracts is now open. Submissions (approx. 300 words) may be sent to Dr. Ju-
dith Maruschke at judith-maria.maruschke@uni-vechta.de until April 1, 2026. Abstracts
may be submitted in English. Presentations can also be given in English.

Participation and registration

Participation is free of charge.

Registration for the kick-off event will be possible on our website from 15 April 2026 until
15 May 2026: https://www.uni-vechta.de/vistra/promotionskolleg

CRILS Online Workshop

Mapping, Transparency and Accountability on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)
25th March 2026 - 18:00-20:00 (GMT)

Workshop Overview

As industrial livestock systems expand across regions and sectors, the lack of publicly accessible, reliable data on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) poses major challenges for research, community advocacy, and regulatory oversight. This workshop brings together perspectives from research and practice to examine how better mapped CAFO data could support transparency, strengthen accountability processes, and enable communities to navigate and contest the impacts of industrial animal agriculture.

Rachel Mason

Rachel Mason (Independent Researcher, Hawaii USA) is a broadly-trained scientist with expertise in food systems, data science, and systems thinking. She will present her work on the research and advocacy possibilities enabled by a global map of CAFOs, outlining both the significance and methodology of building open, verifiable datasets on industrial livestock production. She will present CAFO mapping as a foundation for interdisciplinary inquiry, outlining how farm-level spatial data can inform analyses of environmental burdens and community impacts, while inviting dialogue on how such evidence might inform policy and advocacy.

Shady Heredia

Shady Heredia (CEDENMA & Stop Financing Factory Farming, Ecuador) is an environmental and animal advocate from Ecuador working on environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and the impacts of industrial livestock production. She will draw on her work with indigenous communities to document land degradation, seek accountability from development banks, and challenge the lack of transparency surrounding CAFO expansion. She will highlight how missing environmental impact data can impede community monitoring, and how participatory mapping and open data tools could strengthen local oversight and advocacy.

PhD scholarship at SOAS Economics dept

SOAS economics dept has a funded PhD studentship on corporate concentration in poultry industry, to start in September 2026. The studentship will be held at the Dept of Economics at SOAS University of London and will be supervised by Dr Mehroosh Tak. The selected student will be co-supervised by Royal Veterinary College. Studentship will provide: tuition fees (at the SOAS Home fee rate), and a student stipend (at the UKRI studentship rate, which is GBP 23,805 for 2026-27). Find details of application and studentship project here. Fieldwork will take place in Telangana, India or South Africa. Deadline for application is 17th April 2026. Earlier application submission and informal inquiries to mt83@soas.ac.uk are encouraged.

Project context

Industrial poultry systems in Global South countries have boosted the availability of affordable proteins while also increasing the risk of a new pandemic and livelihood vulnerabilities. Industrial poultry systems are highly corporatised, integrated and consolidated, with only two firms producing global breeding stock for chicken meat. Corporate concentration can create anti-competitive behaviour, skew market power to exclude smallholder producers, undermine environmental standards, and reduce the genetic diversity of local chicken breeds. This project will deliver urgently needed evidence on corporate capture of South African or Indian poultry industries by focusing on trade-offs between increased productivity, livelihood and disease impact of intensive production systems.

Research aim

Aim: using an interdisciplinary approach based within political economy and One Health, the student will investigate the implications of corporate concentration in poultry industry on sustained participation of smallholder farmers in commercial value chains in South Africa or India*.

Research objectives

Objectives

RQ1: What is the livelihood and One Health implications of corporate concentration in study country?

RQ2: How do the regional expansion strategies of global genetics producers shape power relations, competition, farmer participation and profits in SA or India?

RQ3: How does corporate concentration manifest itself in contractual relationships between the corporations and farmers in SA/India and what are barriers to sustained participation for smallholders in a rapidly industrialising production system?

Study site

The study site for this project will be either India or South Africa. The student can choose the study site based on their interest. The studentship can leverage from existing projects including Critical Research on Industrial Livestock Research (CRILS) and Sustainable & Healthy Food Systems Southern Africa (SHEFS-SA) projects.

Module summary

How do our decisions impact the environment?

From the entrepreneur deciding where to develop a project, to the policy maker deciding how the resources of a country will be used, to the citizen deciding whether to buy a new shirt or go thrifting… our decisions have an impact on the environment.

entrepreneurs might want to maximise profits

policy makers might want to get the best result with the minimum cost

citizens might want to get a good deal to satisfy their needs and desires

Economic ideas often influence these decisions.

However, not all economic ideas are the same.

XVII National Conference of the Brazilian Society of Ecological Economics (ECOECO)

The 17th Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Ecological Economics will be held in person in Maceió, Alagoas, from December 7 to 11, 2026. The event will bring together researchers, students, and professionals to discuss the advances and challenges of ecological economics in Brazil. Under the theme “Socio-environmental challenges of decarbonization and its impacts on ecosystems and territories,” the meeting will address key tensions shaping contemporary climate and development debates.

Context and regional role

As an energy transition hotspot, the Northeast of Brazil plays a central role in the country’s strategy to implement cutting-edge technologies required to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). At the same time, scientific evidence shows that these technologies often entail significant social and environmental costs, which may increase transition costs that are not yet fully accounted for in policy and economic assessments.

Critical examination and dialogue

The meeting will provide a timely opportunity to critically examine the contradictions and trade-offs inherent in decarbonization processes. Once again, ECOECO will offer a safe and open space for multi-stakeholder dialogue, grounded in theoretical and practical perspectives on complex socio-environmental systems, in a world that urgently needs to change.

Target audience

Professors, researchers, students, policymakers, managers, third-sector representatives, local communities, and anyone interested in ecological economics.
