Monday we got to experience Poison Spider Mesa with Where Eagles Dare. It’s a very fun trail to do with a couple difficult obstacles, but not overbearing for a TJ running 35s on a 3.5-inch lift.

The second day was Golden Spike, a trail we liked so much last year that we wanted to go back and hit it again. Obstacles like “Golden Crack” and “Body Snatcher” on this trail make for an exciting day, with the last mile being loaded with obstacles. Wednesday we went out on 3-D with the Pickle Trail, which was more scenic with a few obstacles until you hit the Pickle portion of the trail. Thursday and Friday were the vendor show days where we got to show off some of the latest and greatest product in the Jeep market today.

On “Big Saturday” we sponsored Steel Bender, another very scenic trail. Unlike Poison Spider and Golden Spike, this trail wound through the Mill Creek Canyon, instead of being on top of the mesas. With a trail rating of 6, this was a very enjoyable trail to run. It features a handful of potential difficult obstacles if the bypasses are not taken. Even though it’s only been a couple of weeks since the event has ended, is it too early to say that we are ready for the 50^th anniversary of Easter Jeep Safari in 2016?

The full-custom 2-door JK tours with us to our events and features$15,000 worth of parts and accessories so that our customers aren’t looking at parts hanging on a wall, but fully installed.

Our Staff Story:

A couple members of the 4WD crew made the 5,200 mile round trip to San Mateo California from our store in Columbiana, Ohio for Truck & Jeep Fest.  It was a bit of an adventure getting there, but we had a show to get to and weren’t going to let anything keep us from it!

Just outside Rock Springs, Wyoming a truck passed us, kicking up a rock which shattered the rear door window of our dually. We quickly pulled over and taped the window up, then kept on rolling. Moving on into Elko, Nevada, one of the wheel bearings on the trailer suddenly blew out at highway speeds and the wheel destroyed the front axle. Luckily, we found a trailer sales lot just up the road, about 8 miles from where we broke down. We unloaded the Ultimate Rugged Wrangler from the old trailer, pulled off our tool box and reinstalled it on the new trailer. We reloaded and strapped down the JK, sold the old trailer on the spot and were off and running again.

It was a two hour setback after everything was said and done, but it easily could have been a day or two if we didn’t luck out with having a trailer lot a few miles down the road. We ended up making the 2,600 mile trek out to San Mateo in about 70 hours.

How does 13% sound? That was the percentage of finishers of the 2015 King of the Hammers race in Johnson Valley, California. Only 17 out of the 127 teams finished the race this year, proving that this 215 mile war of attrition is one of the, if not the, single toughest off-road races there is.  Our hats are off to Randy Slawson and team for taking this year’s crown standing atop the podium.  The 4WD buggy ran by Fat Head Racing fell short of completing due to snapping a rear axle shaft. The team did have a spare shaft back at the pits but after sitting 4+ hours in traffic on “Jackhammer” earlier in the race, it left no time to fix it and still complete the race within the allotted time.

About King of the Hammers

The King of the Hammers “KOH” is the toughest one-day off-road race on the planet and takes place each February on public lands in Johnson Valley, CA.  The race vehicles must be capable of 4-wheel drive, but outside of that the class is unlimited.

These vehicles come in all shapes and sizes and are capable of speeds over 100+ MPH and still contain gear ratios as low as 100 to 1 for technical rock crawling. The race has evolved from 12 teams racing for bragging rights and a case of beer, to more than 300 teams competing before more than 35,000 fans in person and nearly 500,000 watching online. Inside Scoop

This year, 4WD will have a new driver and buggy that we will be sponsoring that will be running the King of the Hammers 2015 and the rest of the Ultra4 racing season: the Fat Head Racing team. We have sponsored the Fat Head Racing team made up of Driver Jonathan Terhune, Co-Driver Mike DeVore, and Lead Tech, Daryl Mattingly.

Fat Head Racing is out of Indianapolis, IN and has been competing since 2007 in a variety of off-road events. Jonathan has been behind the wheel since the beginning of Fat Head Racing in 2007 and has stood atop the podium numerous of times in the WEROCK modified stock class and also in the TREC trail racing series. Mike DeVore is the co-driver of the Fat Head Racing team and has also been the 4 Wheel Parts Indianapolis store manager for 10+ years.  Lead tech, Daryl, has also been involved in the off-road community for years and works alongside Mike as the shop foreman in their shop at the Indy store.

A small team from 4WD will be making the journey across the country to meet up with Fat Head Racing and will be doing live coverage of the event from Johnson Valley, CA. What is not to like about this in dash factory replacement head unit that already comes with navigation? Daystar’s interior dash panels are a great way to add storage to the upper dash of the JK for your GPS, phone or even sunglasses. The upper dash panels install by removing the factory panel above the radio, using a screwdriver to release the clips that hold the panel in place. Remove the clips from the factory panel and install on the Daystar panel and simply press new panel down to engage clips back in the factory location on the dash to hold the panel in place.

Daystar also makes a lower dash panel to house switches for your auxiliary lights, lockers, compressor, etc. Once again, installation is a breeze for the lower dash panel. Although we do not recommend installing the lower dash panel in your JK if you have a manual transmission, because it is very easy to accidentally flip a switch by accident while shifting. Once again, using a flat head screw driver, release the clips holding the factory panel and pop the panel off from the dash. Remove the factory metal clips from the factory panel. Install the metal clips onto the Daystar switch panel and re-install to dash. If you plan on adding switches right away and need to cut out the space to mount the switches, Daystar has made it easy for you by marking the switch panel with the exact dimensions that you need to cut in order for their rocker switches to fit. Just a quick hint for cutting the plastic panel for the switches, heat up you blade or knife that you will be using – it makes cutting the panel very easy.

Why This Jeep?

Not all eye-catching Jeeps have to be lifted with big tires and aftermarket wheels. This 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a very appealing JK. All the chrome and stainless accents from the headlight bezels, tube bumper and side steps, and the fuel door on this Jeep, it really sets off the maroon color. It almost brings back the picture of a restored CJ. With black and flat black accents becoming so popular right now, it is nice to see something a little different and with a little bit of shine to it.
