Wooden Mushroom Decor

Add a touch of whimsy with these adorable wooden mushrooms!

Mushrooms are everywhere at the moment, which is excellent timing, as my daughter’s nursery is woodland themed. I’ve loved adding little details to her nursery, and one of my favourite additions were these little wooden mushrooms. They’re so cute, whimsical and the rich brown colour gives the room even more warmth and depth.

I thought about making some myself out of air-dry clay, but I wanted to add the warmth and neutrality of wood, and didn’t want to add more colours to the space with paint. I considered adding some details in white paint but in the end I chose to keep them just all stained and am so glad I did. I really love how minimal they are. This is such an easy project I wasn’t sure if it was worthy of a blog post, but they’re so cute and turned out so well I wanted to share them.

I found these adorable little wooden mushrooms online. They came in a variety of shapes and sizes, and were unfinished, ready for staining or painting. I didn’t have a wood stain that was the exact shade of brown that I wanted and so instead I mixed some brown acrylic paint with water to create my own stain. I added several layers of my watered down paint, letting it dry in between, and then sealed them before then dotting them about my woodland-themed nursery.

Hand-Painted Floral Mural Arch

Add a bit of magic and whimsy to any space with a hand-painted floral arch mural

This was a project that took me what felt forever, and there was definitely a point somewhere in the middle that I questioned my life choices. Despite that, I absolutely love how it turned out and overall, I did really enjoy the process. There’s something about painting flowers on the walls that is just intrinsically enjoyable, and although it took me a while, it was the perfect gentle project for me during my baby’s naps after some very disturbed nights.

PAINTING ON THE WALLS

The nursery already had a green arch colour block from when it was the guestroom. I knew I wanted to make this feel like a doorway into a floral garden, and that I wanted to hand-paint it myself. You can buy peel and stick arched murals, but at this point post-partum I was craving painting some flowers on a large scale and so I decided to do it myself from scratch.

First of all I doodled some ideas down into my sketchbook, but to be honest I was so excited to get started that I started painting before I’d finished this and ended up eyeballing and just making the design up as I went. I wanted the colours to complement the peel and stick mural on the nursery feature wall whilst also bringing in some darker pinks, greens and gold accents. I used a variety of paints; wall paints, acrylic paints and posca pens, which made my life so much easier and really allowed me to just let go creatively. First of all, I grabbed my sketchbook and had a quick doodle to have a think about how I wanted to draw my flowers and foliage. I did intend to plan out the design but I was too excited and so I ended up starting and making it up as I went.

As I was painting over a dark green arch, and I only had a sample of the colour I wanted to change it to, I first used a white wall paint to over the arch. This helped minimise the number of coats i would need to get a good coverage of the colour I had chosen.

Once this was dry, I painted over the now white arch in a beige colour called Skimming Stone. I used painter’s tape on the straight sides of the arch to make sure my edges were neat and just painted very carefully at the top where the arch was curved.

Next, I used a pencil to draw on the large flowers I wanted and I painted the outline of these using another Farrow & Ball paint sample, in the colour Sulking Room Pink. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to flll in the flowers at this point and so I left it as it was for the moment.

Next, I drew on some foliage in pencil and mixed up an olive green colour to paint the brnahc like foliage. It took a couple of coats to get the coverage I was after.

Next, I mixed up a darker forest green to paint the large leaves and monstera looking leaves. I felt this was too ‘jungle’ in the end, and so ending up painting over all of the leaves in either an off white or a metallic gold.

To bring in some of the autumnal colours and browns from the peel and stick mural on the nursery feature wall, I added some brown branches with berries on. Again, I used acrylic paint for this and it took a couple of coats to get a good coverage.

finally, I used a white posca paint pen, and gold mettalic paint pen, to add in some grasses and detaisl to the flowers and leaves.

Once this had all dried and I was happy with the design, I peeled off the painters tape.

Easy IKEA Antilop Makeover

Hello there! I’ve not posted since June 2024, and I can’t quite believe how quickly that time has gone. Everyone says how fast time goes once you have a baby, and it really is so true. Despite not posting on here for such a long time, I have still been making and creating in the little free time that I have. If you follow me on instagram, you may have seen what I’ve been up to, but now that we’re getting a bit more sleep, I thought I’d try and get some of my creative projects from the past 8 months up on here.

ADDING LEG WRAPS

One of the quickest, easiest but more effective projects I did was upgrade our Ikea Antilop high chair. We got it second hand from marketplace, so it was already a total bargain, which meant I didn’t mind spending a little extra on accessories. I considered spray painting the legs but one of the more expensive highchairs that I really liked had wooden legs, so I decided to recreate this with oak effect leg wraps. This really elavated the look and added some much needed warmth to the design.

The leg wraps were so easy to install, making this such a simple and easy update that enhanced it’s appearance whilst still being functional. The wraps are pretty thick, and slightly shiny, so they’re durable and easy to clean. You can find the ones I got here, but you can find leg wraps for the Ikea Antilop highchair in so many places, and in a variety of styles, making it easy to match your aesthetic.

ADDING A FOOTREST AND PLACEMAT

Next, I added a bamboo foot rest, in a tone that was pretty similar to the leg wraps. This was again, easy to add, functional but compliments the highchair’s new look. I also wanted to cover some of the white plastic and so I got a lovely sage green silicone placemat. This not only looks so much better, but it makes clean up so much easier as you can just take the placemat off and wash that. The placemats come in so many colours and so again you can make the highchair and your home more cohesive.

Clay Leaf Shelf

Create a beautiful leaf shelf from air-dry clay and MDF for your little one’s nursery or bedroom!

I’ve got another nursery DIY for you this week - the nursery really has been a labour of love for me and I’m really enjoying creating bits and bobs for every corner of it. With our little one now 6 months old, she’s technically ready to move into her own room (even if we aren’t yet!) and so I’ve been thinking about getting a baby monitor for her room to keep an eye on her overnight. I’ve seen lots of baby monitors with wall brackets, which is more appealing to me than a stand, but to be honest both aren’t quite what I wanted for the nursery. I really wanted every item placed into the nursery to add some magic to it, but after a quick look, I couldn’t find anything that fit the bill, and so of course, I got thinking about how to make exactly what I was looking for.

Air-dry clay

It’s my favourite medium as it’s just so versatile, and so when I was thinking about how I could create what I wanted, I immediately thought of air dry clay. I knew that I wouldn’t trust air-dry clay to hold a monitor safely near her cot, so I wanted any weight bearing part of the shelf to be made from wood and proper brackets, but then to decorate around this using air-dry clay. I love working with air-dry clay as well, and feel pretty confident in getting the effect I’m after. I left my air-dry clay pieces to dry for several days, and would advise not attempting to speed the drying process up as this can cause cracks.

I’m so happy with how this little shelf turned out. It’s pretty, whimsical but also practical. Let me know what you think of this, keep reading for the materials I used and the step by step process…

MDF

Shelf brackets

First of all, work out how large you want your shelf and draw it out on paper. I stuck two pieces of A$ together to create a piece of A3 and drew out my design on this. Once I was happy, I drew a thick outline in a felt tip and stuck my design with tape to a piece of wood. You could also just stick it to a table.

Next, I cut a plastic sleeve in half and stuck this on top of my paper and design. I secured it around the edge using tape.

I then took pieces of air dry clay and softened them up in my hands. I rolled out pieces to my desired thickness and so that they were big enough to cover each aspect of my design.

I then placed each piece of clay over each leaf on the plastic and cut them out using a clay scalpel. I smoothed the edges with my finger and some water, and then created details on the leaf using a clay sculpting tool. I kept smoothing any jagged edges with my finger and a little bit of water.

To create the stalk of the plant, I softened and then rolled a piece of air dry clay into a long sausage. I put it in position on my drawing and then cut it where the MDF shelf would sit. I used my sculpting tools, fingers and water to smooth and add some texture to this. I did my best to stick this to the leaves but I wasnt too worried as I planned to adhere each part to the wall seperately for safety anyway.

Whilst my clay dried, which took several days, I cut a piece of MDF to length. I then primed it using a special MDF primer and painted two coats on it of Farrow & Ball’s Skimming Stone.

Once everything was dry, I removed the clay pieces from my drawing and put the MDF shelf in place on it. I then popped the shelf bracket against the shelf and where the bottom clay leaf was (as I wanted the bracket to be hidden) and drew onto the shelf where to drill pilot holes.

Next, I screwed the brackets to the shelf and then held up the shelf in position on the wall and marked where to drill pilot holes. We then drilled pilot holes and scrwed the brackets and shelf into the wall.

I then painted my clay pieces in greens and browns, and left the entired thing to dry. The leaves and stalk did break away from each other but I wasn’t too worried about this as I planned to stick each individual piece to the wall for safety anyway.

Using command strips, cut into smaller pieces and stuck all over the back of each part of the clay, I added the leaves and stalk at the bottom. I made sure to position it so that the leaves were over the brackets and the stalk was up touching the shelf.

I then used more command strips to stick the top leaves and stalks to the wall above the shelf. I made sure to line the stalk at the top up with the stalk at the bottom.

Nursery Feature Wall

Create a magical feature wall in just a few steps!

Decorating the nursery for our baby has been a slow but steady process and finally I find myself with a bit of time to share with you how I did some of it. It’s probably my favourite room in the house now, I feel like I was really able to let go and enjoy myself in here, and it was part because of installing a peel and stick mural behind the cot.

PEEL AND STICK MURAL

As I’ve never tried peel and stick wallpaper or anything before, I was a bit apprehensive about it and whether I’d make a mistake, but the paper was really robust and forgiving, and so I was able to unpeel and restick parts as I needed. I chose a woodland scene in Autumn, as my baby’s room has a woodland (and slightly celestial) theme, and I love how the colours are warm, not too girly and not too neutral. The room was previously painted in a beigey pink colour (Homespun by Rustoleum) before we converted it into the nursery, and so I stuck with that for the rest of the walls and the panelling. The panelling was also already here, but once I had the mural in place. I added a ledge above the panelling to be able to add decorative bits and pieces.

The mural really makes the room for me. If I had had an easy pregnancy and had been able to decorate before baby’s arrival then I would have loved to have painted a mural on this wall myself, but now she’s here I definitely don’t have time to paint a space this size, and so a peel and stick mural was perfect. That isn’t to say that I haven’t been painting on the walls since (one nap at a time!). Keep reading to see how I installed this mural and added the ledge to the panelling…

As I’ve already mentioned before, this room was previously our guest room and I deocrated it by adding this half-wall panelling. We liked this colour and didn’t want to make too many changes, and so we decided to just add to this. You can see more details of what we did here.

To install the peel and stick mural, I made sure the wall was nice and clean, and then started by getting all my pieces in order. I hten started in the top left corner. The mural I bought was made to fit the space with some overhang and so it’s a good idea to use the overhang to give yourself some leeway incase you don’t get the first piece on perfectly straight.

For each piece, you want to line up the pattern where needed, and then unpeel some of the backing from the top left. I used painteres tape to hold the piece in place to free up some hands. You then want to slowly stick the mural to the wall moving from top left to bottom right, whilst peeling more backing off as you go.

The mural I bought included a scraper which was great at using to stick the paper down and to ensure there were no air bubbles. It was also really useful to use the edge on the tops and bottom to create a neat fold.

Next I used a stanley knife and the scraper together to cut off any excess from the top and bottom of each piece. I did this as I went.

Next, I measured the width of my wall, and bought some pine stripwood to create a little ledge on top of my panelling. I painted this in the same colour as the panelling.

I then held up my stripwood in position and using a pencil drew onto the stripwood where the panelling wood and the stripwood would meet. Using a drill, I then created some pilot holes. If you have a nail gun you can skip this step.

Next, I added some wood glue in between the stripwood and panelling, and screwed the stripwood into the panelling below. I then used wood filler where my stripwood met another piece and sanded this once dry.

Finally, I caulked the seam between the ledge and the panelling and once dry painted over the caulk and wood filler.

Hallway Wall Niche

Add some storage into otherwise redundant spaces with a handmade wall niche!

Hello! It’s been far too long since I posted on my little corner of the internet, having a baby is wonderful, but also time-consuming, so I’ve not had much time to blog about any of the creative things me and the other half have been up to during nap time. Since being so poorly in my pregnancy, the other half has taken much more of an active roll in my DIY plans, and so I’m really lucky that I can dream up ideas and he helps get them done or looks after the little one whilst I get my creative fix.

WALL NICHE

This project was a long time coming; we’d been wondering what was behind this wall since we moved into our house in 2020. If you also live in a new build house, you might also find that you have some corners and spaces that have been blocked off and find yourself wondering if there is storage potential in them. So, one afternoon, running on the high of getting baby down for a nap successfully, we decided to have a look and tentatively drilled a hole in the plasterboard. Much to our delight, there was nothing in it, and so we moved onto thinking about what we could do to make this space much more useful for us.

SHOE STORAGE

We have a pretty narrow hallway so a shoe cabinet isn’t an option, but we both like the convenience of having our shoes by the front door to quickly grab, and so it didn’t take us long to agree that some shoe storage would be useful. Shoes aren’t the prettiest of things to have out, however creating a cabinet with a door was a bit beyond our skillset (especially in the limited time we get!) but we felt we could manage a niche in the wall, and that we’d just have to keep on top of keeping it tidy.

We’re pretty impressed with ourselves for this one, and I’m so glad that we took the plunge and had a look to see what was behind this wall. We do plan on cutting and adding a shelf to the middle of the niche we’ve created for even more storage but at the moment it’s working well just as it is. Keep reading to find out how we did it, and the materials we used..

Hacksaw / Wood Saw

First of all, you want to be REALLY sure that there is nothing behind your plasterboard. We used a stud finder to check for wiring and where the studs were before using a drill to create a small hole to have a look.

Next we drew out the size of the opening of our niche, and used a hacksaw to cut this out. We foudn the hacksaw cut through the plasterboard really easily, but we went slowly and carefully so we didn’t snap the plasterboard as there were large parts that didn’t have studs behind them.

We had a stud in the middle of where we wanted to put out niche, and as this little wall has other studs holding it up, and we never put anything heavy on here, we felt confident cutting it out using a wood saw.

We then created a wooden frame within the hole to add strength and to give our niche something to screw into.

I then measured the size of the niche and worked out the angles we would need to cut using a protractor. I transferred these measurements onto a piece of MDF and the other half cut this out using a jigsaw. We repeated this to give us the top and bottom of our niche.

Although we didn’t do it this way, I would advise then measuring and cutting out the back pieces from MDF and creating the niche box outside of the hole, using screws and wood glue to secure all together. You should then be able to push the box into the hole and secure it with screws and a drill to the wooden framework you have created.

Finally, we cut wooden trim to go around the niche, using a mitre box and 45 degree angles to get a neat corner.

We then caulked and wood filled all of the gaps and edges. Once dry, we sanded everything smooth and then added two layers of white wood primer. With MDF, it’s really important to use a primer before painting, otherwise the MDF will soak up the paint and it may warp or expand.

Finally, we painted the whole thing with wood paint and left it to dry.

Ikea Hemnes Drawer Hack

Get that vintage and rustic look with this easy Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers hack!

I’ve not seen anyone else do this with their Ikea Hemnes furniture so I’m assuming it’s not well known that underneath the colour of the stained range of Hemnes furniture pieces is solid pine. That means that with just a sander and a bit of elbow grease (or a willing partner as was the case for me!) you can restore your stained Hemnes furniture back to natural wood and stain it whatever wood tone your heart desires.

Before we did this, we had seen people paint furniture from the stained Hemnes range and even paint it with a faux wood effect. I have to say that those turned out really well, but for me there’s nothing like having that real wood grain on display and I love how doing it this way gives it a rustic and worn appearance - a far cry from the clean cut and ‘new’ appearance that Ikea furniture often has. I feel like these drawers now look like they’ve lived a little, and given the woodland theme we’ve given our daughter’s nursery, the oak wood tone we’ve stained it in goes really well. If you do try this, it’s important that you check you’re buying furniture from the stained Hemnes range, not the range that has the glossy laminate finish.

I really love how the nursery is coming together now. I’m definitely taking my time with it, and I still have lots of little decorative bits and bobs that I want to get for it, but hopefully it’ll be all ready for my little girl to start sleeping in in a few months time (assuming she is of course feeling ready herself!). Ikea Hemnes Stained Drawers

First of all, get your hands on some Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers. These drawers come in different finishes, but the ones which are stained (white, grey or blue), are solid pine underneath. There’s usually lots on Facebook Marketplace, which is where I got mine for just £80.

Next, grab your electric sander, and using low grit sand paper, remove the coloured stain. We used an orbital sander for a majority of it, and then a mouse sander for the edges and corners.

Work your way up to a higher sand paper grit to give your drawers a nice smooth finish.

Once youre happy with the finish, paint the whole thing with a pre-stain conditioner. As the drawers are pine, it’s helpful to use a conidtioner to make sure the stain applies evenly and you don’t get any patches. Follow the instructions on your pre-stain.

Then, use a brush or cloth to add your chosen wood stain to the drawers. I used a medium oak colour and applied 2 coats as per instructions on the stain.

Pressed Flower Taper Candle

If you follow me on instagram. you’ll have seen this project already. It’s definitely easier these days to quickly upload a photo or reel of a project than it is to photograph, upload, edit, and wtite a blog post, but despite that, and blogging not being as popular as it used to be, this tiny corner of the internet still has my heart. So, I’m finally uploading this project.

Spring crafts

It’s perfect for Spring, and once again, a super quick and easy one. As I said in my previous post, projects need to be relatively quick as well as mindful and beautiful, now that I’m a mum, and this really fit the bill. Spring is the perfect time to get crafting with the longer, brighter days, and I don’t know about you, but that always makes me feel so much more energised.

cANDLE CRAFTS

I always have a stash of taper candles ready to use or decorate, so this project only required me to buy the pressed flowers. In the past, I’ve painted taper candles with acrylic paint (see my Painted Heart Taper Candles and my Painted Tulip Taper Candles) and I have also dipped them into different coloured wax to create an ombre effect (check out my Ombre Taper Candles here). This time, I wanted to try something different, and as I’m enjoying natural textures and florals so much lately, I thought I’d have a go at adding some pressed flowers to some.

I had a great time with this project, it was a little finicky and by the end my tea light candle holder was a mess, but I really enjoyed the process and am super happy with how the taper candle turned out. I love that it matches my Pressed Flower Egg Ornaments, and so together they made the perfect spring and easter decor. Keep reading to find out what I used and for the step by step tutorial…

Tea light candle

First of all, open your pressed flowers and think about which flowers you want to use and where. You don’t have much time with melted wax so being prepared is key!

Next, light a tea light candle and wait until enough wax has melted that you can dip a paintbrush into it.

Carefully dip your paintbrush into the melted wax and dab it onto your taper candle where you want to place a flower. Do not put your paintbrush into the flame. Quickly place a pressed flower onto the melted wax and press it down.

Use the paintbrush to carefully add melted wax across the top of the flower to secure in place. Your wax over the flower may go slightly cloudy, so to remove this, I quickly moved the taper candle over the heat of the flame to re-melt it and make it transparent again. Do not get too close to the flame.

Repeat this process all over, adding flowers wherever you like. I added mine mostly to the bottom of the candle so that I could light this candle and I will only be using it until it reaches the highest flower to avoid any fire hazards.

Happy Saturday! Spring has sprung, and so I thought I’d quickly hop on (lol) to share this lovely floral bunny art print.

I started thinking about the nursery long before our little one decided to join us but I knew pretty early on that I wanted a woodland theme, and that I wanted to try and make as many cute nursery prints for it as I could.

With Easter recently, it seemed fitting to create a rabbit illustration not only because it was Easter, but also to add some artwork to our currently empty nursery walls. I love illustrating in biro, there’s something so liberating about making a mark and knowing that you can’t adjust it, edit it or take it back, and I find there’s a depth and texture with biro marks that I just can’t replicate with any other medium.

I got the watercolour paints out to add some pastel flowers and green foliage to the front of the rabbit, and although I initially wanted to add some gold watercolour paint to the illustration somewhere (it’s just so pretty!), I decided after playing around with it a bit that it just didn’t need it.

Pressed Flower Egg Ornaments

I’m a bit late posting this project here but something I’m quickly learning about motherhood is that you don’t get much time off! I am loving it - though I will of course be glad for a whole nights sleep when that day eventually comes! - and despite having little time to myself, I did this year manage to squeeze in this quick and easy Easter craft project.

PRESSED FLOWERS

I’ve been really enjoying earthy, vintagey and natural decor, and so when I saw some ready to use pressed flowers online, I bought them on a whim and thought I’d see how I could incorporate them into some craft projects. This is the first of the projects I used them in, so stay tuned for my second project, where I used then to decorate a taper candle.

EASTER DECOR

For this project, I had some hollow and lightweight blank eggs leftover from previous Easter egg projects (check out these Abstract Art Floral Eggs and these Mid Century Easter Decorations!) and knew they would be perfect for this. I seem to forever be decorating this house, and so I fhad some paint samples in various shades of off white knocking about, and so I used these which saved me from having to mix up the perfect shade.

I really love how these turned out and I hope you like them too. As a new mum, projects are all about packing a punch (and quenching my creative thirst!) in as short a time as possible, so this project, with ready made pressed flowers and the quick drying time of mod podge, was just perfect! First of all, paint your blank craft eggs in whatever colour you fancy. i went for this off white colour that I had a paint sample in.

I took out all of the pressed flowers and organised them to get an idea of how many flowers (and which of the flowers) I wanted on each egg.

Use a paintbrush to add some mod podge to the egg approximately the size of the pressed flower you want to add. Gentle press the flower onto the mod podge once tacky and paint mod podge all over the top of the flower.

Repeat step 3 adding new flowers and stems all over your egg.

Add the flowers wherever you like; layer them up or spread them out, it’s entirely up to you!

Once you’re happy with your flower placement, paint another layer of mod podge all over ypur egg to protect your hard work.

Once completely dry, use a pin to create a hole in the top of your egg, and then push an eye pin into the hole and secure it with glue.

Finally, cut off some thread or string, pull these through the eye pin and tie a knot. Your egg is now ready to hang!

Scalloped Edge Colour Blocking

Add some cuteness to a room with a scalloped edge colour block!

The nursery makeover is in full swing, though now we have a baby it is a much slower process than decorating used to be. The first step of decorating the nursery, and changing it from being the guest room, was to paint the walls. I didn’t want to remove the half wall panelling that we had up already, but knew that I wanted to bring the colour already on the walls (Homespun by Rustoleum) onto the others. I wanted to make it a little more interesting than just a square block of colour, but I didnt want to panel the entire room, and so I opted to create a pretty scalloped edge on top of the colour block. It did take some patience, but it was quite a cathartic process and I love how it looks. Let me know what you think and if you’d like a go yourself, keep reading for the materials I used and the step by step process…

First of all, decide where you want your scallop-edged colour block to go. As we had a panelled block of colour on one wall already, I decided to use this as the height for the the colour block on the other walls.

Once you’ve decided how high to have your colour block, use a long spirit level to draw a line at this height all along your walls.

Using small paintbrushes, cut in your colour block.

Using a paint roller and tray, fill in the rest of the colour block.

Once dry, use a flat lid (I used a cocoa powder one!) and use tape to mark halfway across it. Use the line created by the tape, to place the lid halfway across the top of the colour block and draw around the top half onto the wall.

Repeat along the wall before filling in each scallop with a small flat paint brush. Take your time and start a few mm away from the edge before pushing the brush closer and closer.

Easy Lime Wash Walls

Create lime wash walls in a few easy steps!

Lime wash walls are having their moment and I love them. They can be created in a variety of ways, ranging in complexity, from mixing water with lime powders, to watering down ordinary paint. I don’t see the point in overcomplicating a process that can be done otherwise simply, and so when I came across a chalk wash paint that could create a lime wash effect in just a couple of coats, it was a no-brainer for me to give it a go. Just a quick disclaimer that this isn’t a sponsored post, not that I imagine my little corner of the internet would catch a big brand like Rustoleum’s attention! Anyway, keep reading for how you can create a lime wash effect really easily with chalk wash paint…

Chalk Wash Paint

First of all, give your paint a good shake and stir.

Next, use a cutting in brush to go all around the edges of your walls, including around power points. You could also use painters tape to get all of your edges nice and crisp, but I chose not to out of sheer laziness!

Next, pour some paint into a paint tray and use a roller to cover the rest of the wall in a first layer of paint.

Don’t be alarmed as you paint this first layer, it will be patchy and blocky, but this is just the undercoat.

Once this first coat is dry, use a wide brush to paint the second coat on. They key here is to apply the paint in a cross pattern or by painting an X shape on.

Repeat this cross pattern all over. The edges are a little tricky when doing this and so to get really neat edges you may want to use painters tape. As before, I didn’t, and so I just took a little extra time making sure I did the cross pattern right up to the edge neatly.

Abstract Seascape Art

Create a beautiful seascape using wall paint!

Happy Saturday! I’m back with another piece of wall art, but this week I’m sharing how I created this large abstract seascape for our bedroom. We’re lucky to have lived by the sea for a lot of our relationship, and now we’re not quite as close, I thought it would be nice to bring that view indoors.

The bedroom was a work in progress for the better part of a year. We had to start and stop for various reasons but my husband finally finished the walls for me as I wasn’t feeling well enough to do it myself and so recently I decided to create a custom piece of art to go above our bed to really finish it off. I wanted something that would feel in proportion to the bed and so I knew it wasn’t going to need to be a pretty large canvas. In the end I opted for a 91 x 61 cm canvas, and to ensure that the art went with the room (and that I had enough paint!) I used water-based wall paints in the colours that we had already used in the room.

Once I was finally happy with the piece, I left it to dry, and then created a custom frame using strips of pine wood and No More Nails. I stained the wood in a medium oak finish, and once all dry, attached it to the wall with command strips. I hope you like this as much as I do, it’s not perfect but it feels really peaceful and gives our walls some much needed wall art! Keep reading to find out what I used and how I did it.

Grab your canvas and cover it first (if it isn’t already prepped) in a coat of white paint.

Next, I grabbed a beige wall paint and used this to map out key features, like the sea, the sun, and waves.

Next I went over the with a white wall paint, adding lighter patches and blending out the beige colour.

I then took some of the grey wall paint we had used in our bedroom, and used this to add shadows, the horizon and shadows in the waves.

Using water, I blended all the colours as I wanted it to have a gentle and calm feeling. I then went back in with white and beige, adding in highlights and warmth.

If you’re working on a big canvas like I did, it’s really helpful to make sure you keep stepping back to see the overall image. Once I did this I realised I wanted a bit more grey in it and so I kept adjusting until I was happy.

How to Make a Wooden Mantel

How to create your own hollow and lightweight wooden mantel!

If you follow me on instagram, you may have seen a few months ago that we had a faux fireplace with cabinetry either side built in our living room. I already had the electric stove, and after some thought, added a faux brick effect behind it, but I didn’t have a mantel and given the chimney breast isn’t made from bricks and mortar, didn’t want anything too heavy.

As a result, I spent ages looking for hollow or light weight wooden mantels online, and suprisingly I couldn’t find any readily available to buy. I did however come across a few videos on Youtube of how to DIY them, and so I convinced my husband to help me make one. The star of the show really was the pocket hole jig, this enabled us to attach the sides of the mantel together without any screws showing, and using mitred edges on the wood gives the illusion that it is one solid piece of wood.

We stained in a medium oak colour similar to our dining table, however it’s looking a little more orange here than I would like and I’m thinking I might seal it with a brown wax or varnish that helps tone this down a bit. First of all, decide how deep, tall and wide you want your mantel box to be. Grab some timber that is the right width and which is relatively thin in depth. Cut your timber to length. You will need 3 lengths to create the box (A, B & C). I cut the front of the box with 45 degree angles at each end but the sides straight (A).

Next, use a pocket hole jig to add holes along the lengths of wood that will be the top (B) and bottom (C) of the ‘box’. Make the holes on what will be the inside of the box.

Use the pocket hole jig to also add pocket holes at each end of the top (B) and bottom (C) pieces of the mantel. Do this so that you can secure two shorter end pieces later.

Next, place the front piece of the box flat (A), with what will be the front facing downwards. Then place what will be the top (B) of the mantel piece at a 90 degree angle on this, flush to the top and with the pocket holes on the inside.

Use screws and a screwdriver to secure the two pieces of wood together (A & B). Be sure to use screws that aren’t long enough to go through the front piece. Repeat this process with what will be the bottom of the mantel (A & C).

Measure and cut two smaller lengths of wood to fit the ends (D & E). If you used a 45 degree angle on the front timber of the mantel, be sure to do a 45 degree angle cut where this smaller piece will meet it. Use wood glue and screws in your predrilled pocket holes to secure.

You should now have something that resembles a trough - a box with one side open. Use a sander or sanding paper to smooth all the seams and collect the sawdust.

Mix the sawdust with some wood glue and use a small spatula to fill any seams or gaps on the outside of the box. Leave to dry and then sand smooth.

If you are using pine like we did, use a pre-stain wood conditioner all over to give an even finish to the stain.

Choose your stain and then apply several coats of this on the outside of the mantel box until you are happy with the depth of colour.

Measure the height and width of the space on the inside of the box, and get or cut some timber that will fit snuggly inside of this (F). Again, you don’t want your timber to be too thick but you want this piece thick enough to hold the mantel up.

12.

Use a level and decide where abouts you want your mantel to be on the chimney breast. Once decided, mark this on the bottom and then measure up from this the thickness of the bottom of the mantel (C).

13.

Use pilot holes and screws to then attach F to your chimney breast at the measurements in step 12. Use a level to make sure this is straight.

14.

Finally, push the mantel box onto F, so that F sits inside of it. If it’s very snug, you might need to use some force. Secure the mantel to the wood (F) with some screws underneath where noone will see. If you need more support, you can also add some screws on top.

…and that’s it!

Faux Brick Effect Fireplace

A quick and easy way to create a faux brick effect in your faux fireplace!

I’m no stranger to creating a faux brick effect, I’ve previously used plaster and tape to create a brick effect on one of the walls in our office/guest room. That was quite a fun, although laborious process, and it came out so well. This time however, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit to the faux brick effect in our new faux fireplace, and so I opted for something removable.

PEEL & STICK TILES

After a bit of research, I opted for some eel and stick tiles. When I was looking for what to buy, the main thing I was looking for was that they would be textured. I wasn’t too fussed by the colour of them, as I knew I would be painting them white, and so the style of brick and how textured they were, was what cemented my decision. I wasn’t sure how well this was going to work either, and so I also didn’t want to break the bank. I was pleasantly suprised by how well the tiles adhered to the fireplace surround, though I did notice when painting them that the colour started to come off of the tiles - so they probably weren’t the best quality.

With a bit of perserverence and a few layers of paint later, we finally got them to be white, and for a temporary solution we’re pretty pleased with it. For a more permanent and better quality solution, you could always use brick tiles which would give a much more realistic effect. First of all, we primed the surround of our faux fireplace to make it easier to remove the tiles in the future. We have an electric fire which does not have a real flame and only gives out heat from the front (and which we don’t use all that often) so we felt confident to do this hack. I would not recommend it if you have a real flame or fire.

Once the primer was dry, we grabbed the brick tiles and started working out how they would most realistically interlink.

Using scissors, we cut one side of the first tile so that it was straight and also removed some of the excess material around the brick effect on the right. This enabled the tiles to fit more snuggly together.

We then peeled the backing off of the first peel and stick tile.

We then placed the first tile on the back of the fire surround in the top left, ensuring that the lines between the bricks were straight with a level.

We then chose our next tile, and dry fitted it to check it would interlink with the tile already stuck down. I used scissors to trim off any excess to make sure it did, but i wasn’t too worried about any small gaps. We continued this all over, using a stanley knife to cut out a gap for our electric fire cable.

Once the back was covered, we then started on the sides. We again, through trial and error, found the tiles that would fit the best, but here we didn’t trim the edge of the tile that would be going up against the corner. Instead we kept a small gap, and cut off small bis of matching brick from other tiles to fill these gaps.

We continued this all over and used a stanley knife to carefully trim along the front of the fireplace to create a straight and smooth edge.

Next we used decorators caulk to fill in any of the seams between the tiles, at the corners, and on the front edge of the fireplace surround to make it as neat as possible for painting.

We then painted the tiles in several coats of a white matt paint that we already had. It took a few coats to get it to completely cover the colour of the brick tiles.

We then left it to dry, popped our electric optimyst stove back in and added a faux flue to make it look like a real log burning fireplace.

…and that’s it!

Mushroom Fairy Lights

Add some woodland magic to your winter decor with these DIY mushroom fairy lights!

I first saw some mushroom-shaped fairy lights on social media. Once I’d seen them, I knew I not only needed some myself, but that I had to have a go at making them. I’m loving all things forest and woodland at the moment, and with baby’s nursery going to have a bit of a woodland theme, these will probably end up in there at some point.

This was a surprisingly easy project, that requires hardly any tools; all you need for it are some battery-powered wire LED fairy lights (I wouldn’t use plug in or glass bulb lights just incase!), hot glue sticks and a hot glue gun. It was also one of those projects where the process was really cathartic and relaxing. I stuck on a film and slowly but surely made my way along the fairy lights turning them each into a mushroom.

Battery-powered wire LED fairy lights

Hot glue gun

First of all, twist the wire at each LED light to create the framework for the stem of the mushroom. Ensure the light is at the top of the twist.

Next, add hot glue to each of these twists. You may need to do this in stages so that one layer of glue dries before adding another. Keep ading glue until the twisted wire and bulb is compeltely covered all around and you’re happy with the width of it.

Cut off some parchment paper and on the shiny side, add hot glue in dollops to create domed disks. You’ll need one of these for each twist/bulb.

Once these have set, peel them off the parchment paper and trim to make them roughly circular.

Then, add some hot glue to the centre of the underside of each dome and stick these to the very top of each twist/bulb.

Once set, use a small amount of hot glue and the tip of the hot glue gun to add some textured lines from the centre outwards to the top of the dome.

3D Plaster Star Ornaments

Christmas is the best time for crafting in my opinion. There’s so much inspiration around online as well as in the shops. For the past couple of years, celestial shapes like moons and stars have been everywhere, and inspired by that, I wanted to have a go at making metal-looking 3D stars to hang on my tree. Plaster of paris is such a great medium for creating 3D shapes, and once I’d found a silicone mould online that gave me the size and shape I was after, the process of making these was pretty simple. I really like how they look, and am thinking of using the smaller stars as decorations for our wrapped presents this year. First of all, mix up some plaster of paris pwder with water. Follow the instructions on your plaster of paris as to what ratio to use. I chose to make mine slightly runnier so that it was easy to pour into the mould.

Pour your plaster of paris mixture into your moulds. Use a pin to get the plaster of paris into the corners and tap the mould all around to remove air bubbles.

Leave the plaster in the moulds to dry completely.

Once dry, carefully remove the plaster stars from the silicone mould and pop them to one side.

Next, mix up some more plaster, and pour into the silicone mould again. This time, cut off and tie a knot in the end of some gold thread. Use a pin to push this into the plaster.

Take one of the dried star shapes of the same size, and press this flat side down into the wet plaster in the mould. You may need to overfill the mould slightly so they touch.

Clean up the egdes with a tissue and then leave to dry with a book gently weighing the top star down into the wet plaster.

Once dry, carefully remove from the mould and use a nile file or sandpaper to clean up any edges.

Finally, I painted the plaster in a layer of white acrylic to protect it before painting several layers of gold paint.

Happy December! Only 23 days to go until Christmas, and so if you haven’t started your festive crafting, now is the time. I think I say this every year, but Christmas is my favourite time of year, and this year is particularly special, as any day now, we will be meeting our baby. These crafts are perfect to do with little ones, though do of course be careful if you use hot glue and scissors. These projects are a great way to add some new festive decorations without spending a penny, and even better they make use of those old toilet rolls. Which one of these ideas is your favourite? FAIRISLE STARS

Flatten a toilet roll and use a ruler to draw lines across it horizontally at your desired width.
Cut along thse lines to give you several rings.
Take three of these rings, and carefully trim each end of them into points leaving a gap in between so that the remain a ring.
Next, grab a white gel pen or paint pen and draw on your fairisle pattern on either side of each pointed ring.
Position your pointed rings within each other to create a star shape before gluing in place.
Cut off some thread or ribbon and thread this through one of the points so it can hang on the tree.

2. MINIMAL SNOWFLAKE

Repeat steps 1 and 2 from above to give you several rings.
Fold each ring in half to create the shape as seen in the second image above.
Grab a paint pen or some glue and glitter and add some colour to the edge of these shapes.
Use glue to secure the fold so that the rings stay in this folded shape.
Then use some more glue to secure 4 of these folded rings together to create a snowflake shape.
FInally, cut off some thread or ribbon and thread this through one of the points to hang on the tree.

3. STANDING TREE

As with the first two projects, flatten your toilet roll.
This time, draw out a Christmas tree shape, ensuring you leave a ring around the bottom (this is what will enable it to stand on it’s own).
Use some scissors to cut this shape out. When cutting the points of the tree, be sure to not connect them to that the front and back remain attached to each other.
Paint your tree and decorate in whatever way you fancy.
