A User Review..

I've been a Sherlock Holmes' fan for what feels like forever, and, like others, was concerned that this modern version would be a disaster.

I needn't have worried. It was a terrific, fast-paced, edge-of-the-seat adventure. Benedict Cumberbatch (what a name!) brings a dark edginess to Holmes that gives the whole piece a delightful 'gothic' feel, while Martin Freeman - if the first episode is anything to go by - will make a perfect foil as Watson. Casting is so important and this combination feels just right.

I'll always have a soft spot for Basil Rathbone's Holmes, and, on the small screen at least, I can't see anyone displacing Jeremy Brett as the definitive 'Victorian' sleuth. But maybe, just maybe, the writers have created a Sherlock for the modern age who will stand the test of time and join a handful of other portrayals in the Pantheon of the greats.

Moffat's pedigree as a comedy writer has added a new layer to the Holmes' scenario, and though there were several in-jokes in the first episode that only Holmes' aficionados would appreciate, there was enough general humour to lighten what might otherwise have been a dark canvas.

Of course, I shouldn't have had any doubts. Steven Moffat is, after all, the man who rescued Dr Who from the self-indulgent, soap-opera obsessed, poorly scripted, moribund years of Russell T Davies and turned it back into a fun-packed joy to watch. He's done the same with 'Sherlock'.
The man is a genius. I can't wait for the next instalment.

NFSW is an online street-racer in the same vein of other games in the Need for Speed series. When it's not about racing, it's about avoiding the long, wheeled arm of the law. The game purports to be massively multiplayer and open world, and in some sense it is both of those. The world is indeed open, and as you drive through it you'll see a great many players, but that is where the ties to the MMO genre seem to end. The ability for you, the player, to interact with other players in this open world is minimal. You can talk to them, compare your stats, invite them to a match or a group, and that's about it. That would probably be enough under most circumstances, but NFSW is a racing game, and as such has no real cooperative mode, so grouping up becomes pretty much useless.

Gameplay in Need for Speed World is broken down into four parts – at least according to the power-up menu. The first is exploration, where you can drive around the game's city and…well, that's it. Exploration is really just how you get from place to place, although even that can be circumvented by simply using the game's map to teleport to a race location or join from a distance, leaving the mode almost entirely without purpose.

Participating in races and evading the cops also rewards players with a random powerup. This was a particularly missed opportunity, as currently the game has no player-driven economy. Players earn money that can only be spent in the game's store – no trades between players can be made. This feels like something that could have been very easily fixed by simply having things like car modifications as rare-drops from the end-of-race rewards, and allowing players to trade them. Instead, they're simply bought and used and there isn't enough player interaction.

Closing Comments

In an nutshell, Need for Speed World is an online racer masquerading as an MMO, where there is really very little player interaction at all. The open world is a glorified queuing system, and there is far too much grinding between upgrades, and far too little difference between the upgrades themselves. No doubt the game will have content updates in the future that add much more interesting components, but right now, the ‘free-to-play’ intro serves as a demo for the paid portion which is more of the same, but with far less people, little means of interacting with the ones who are around, and little to keep players grinding towards their next level.

Tom Clancy's HAWX 2: First Look

Fans of the original Tom Clancy's HAWX will be happy to know that much of what made the original game entertaining--fast-paced aerial combat--is still on display in HAWX 2, but the development team has made a number of improvements to deliver a more fleshed-out flying experience. We get the first taste of this in the first mission in the game, where we learn that the world is once again in the throes of political instability and nuclear weapons are missing from a Russian facility. The mission starts with a fully controllable F-16 takeoff sequence at a remote air base in the desert, and while you're heading toward the runway, you'll see little details that show how the base isn't just a static object. It's fully functional and mobilizing for the task at hand.

We then fast-forward to later in the game--this time a nighttime seek-and-destroy mission where you take off (once again, a manual takeoff) from a carrier in an F-35 stealth fighter and fly over a region of an African country. Since this is a nighttime mission, you can switch to night vision to get a better look at the targets, which happen to be some tankers floating off the coast. The trick here is that some of these tankers are friendly while some of them are hostile, but you'll know which are OK to fire on once you get them in your sites and assess the situation. When you decide that one of the tankers is an enemy, you can fire a precision bomb and take it out with ease, but once you take out the first target, antiair fire starts streaming from the coastline. There's nice subtle detail here--since the country you're flying over doesn't necessarily have the best defenses, particularly against stealth aircraft, the antiair fire tends to spring up in random directions. So while this antiair fire won't necessarily fly directly at you, it's still wise to pay close attention so that you don't inadvertently turn into one of the streams

We didn't get to see the ending for this particular mission (though we're told that HAWX 2 will also feature manual landing on aircraft carriers), but we did get to see some dogfighting action. The development team behind HAWX 2 stated that it wants dogfighting to be a more visceral experience. The result of this seems to be that jets will be flying pretty close to each other when they're engaged--we saw plenty of jets using their flares to thwart missile attacks and perform a variety of maneuvers to evade enemy fire. Additionally, when other jets are controlled by the AI, they will often turn to face you in a game of chicken as a means of replicating human behavior in multiplayer situations. On top of that, the picture-in-picture feature will generally make it easier to track enemy jets, because you'll get a closer look at their maneuvers and get a better idea of how to engage them.

It's worth mentioning that in full-on multiplayer, you can select from a variety of aircraft, all of which have different attributes. Also of note: You can play the entire single-player campaign cooperatively over the various online services for each platform (or through system link on the Xbox 360). We'll have more on HAWX 2, including more info on the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles that let you spy on enemy targets) missions, before its release this fall on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Red Dead Redemption

As you ride the train west from the northern city of Blackwater, you have no idea what's waiting for you in the frontier town of Armadillo at the end of Red Dead Redemption's intro sequence. Conversations between other passengers clue you in to the state of the nation, and a quick look out of the window tells you that the territories are as untamed as they are beautiful. But it's not until you step off the train in the well-worn boots of protagonist John Marston and have to sidestep a drunk staggering out of the saloon that you realize how alive the world feels, and how much fun you're going to have exploring it. Similarities with recent Grand Theft Auto games are immediately apparent in the controls and the HUD, though both have been improved in subtle but important ways. Those basics, in conjunction with excellent gameplay, a great story, and a sizable multiplayer suite make Red Dead Redemption something very special.

When you arrive in Armadillo for the first time, you're a small fish in an extremely large pond. None of the townsfolk have ever heard of John Marston, and they're too busy believably going about their business to pay you much attention unless you bump into them. The gameworld stretches for miles in every direction beyond the confines of the modest town, and if it weren't for a number of mandatory missions that deftly familiarize you with the controls and gameplay mechanics early on, the prospect of venturing out into the wilderness could be daunting. Marston is a deeply flawed but very likable protagonist, and therefore it doesn't take long for him to start making friends in the New Austin territory. One of them, a ranch owner whom you meet early in the game, gives you both a place to stay (which doubles as a place to save your progress) and a horse to call your own, and it's at this point that you're more or less free to do as you please. Marston's lengthy and occasionally surprising story is linear for the most part, but it's told through missions that don't always need to be completed in a specific order, and you're free to ignore them for a time if you'd rather just explore the giant Wild West sandbox you're playing in.
