TACLOBAN CITY —To combat rabies, the Tacloban City Government, through the Tacloban City Veterinary Office (CVO), has launched an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign in elementary schools throughout the city. This initiative aims to raise students' awareness about rabies prevention and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

The campaign began on September 6 at Bliss Elementary School in Barangay 74 Nulatula, where 76 Grade 5 and 6 students participated in discussions about the risks associated with rabies. Educators explained that rabies is a viral disease transmitted primarily through the bites of infected animals, leading to severe health consequences if not treated promptly.

On September 9, the CVO team visited two additional schools in Brgy. Tagpuro: Tagpuro Elementary School and Villa Sofia Elementary School. According to the latest report from the DOH Eastern Visayas—Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit, the region recorded 8,601 dengue cases and 20 fatalities from January 1 to August 17, 2024. This marks a 236% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 2,559 cases and nine deaths.

For Morbidity Week 33 (August 11-17, 2024) alone, there was a 34% rise in cases, reaching 1,456 compared to 1,087 cases in Morbidity Week 32 (August 4-10, 2024). Leyte province has reported the highest number of cases, totaling 2,737, accounting for 32% of the region's total cases. Most affected are boys aged 1-10 years.
