New from Tap Tap: Riddim Ribbon!

Riddim Ribbon, a brand new iPod Touch/iPhone game from Tapulous – the masterminds behind Tap Tap Revenge – is now available on the iTunes App Store! This isn’t just another differently-branded version of the “Tap Tap” style. Here’s their own description of the game’s action:

Welcome to the world of RIDDIM RIBBON, where you guide a spinning ball as it races and rushes down a twisting, turning ribbon that’s floating in a dynamic digital space. With the beats of The Black Eyed Peas (and downloadable levels from Tiësto, Benny Benassi and, soon, others) pumping in your ears, use the iPhone / iPod Touch’s ultra-sensitive tilt controls to stay in the groove.

Each fork in the ribbon presents a new direction for you to take the mix of the song. Jump the ramps to reach upper levels, where wild audio effects kick in and the sound becomes more uniquely yours. Roll over pebbles and hit targets to maintain your speed through the checkpoints, but watch out for beat-dropping obstacles – you’ll need to flick your phone to jump over them! If you veer off the target line too long, instruments start fading, the music slows down, and the track falls apart. Then you’ll certainly lose the crowd, which is a DJ’s worst nightmare. The better you play the game, the better the song sounds!

Playing Riddim Ribbon

The game comes with three different Black Eyed Peas songs (Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, and Meet Me Halfway) and, like the Tap Tap series, has in-game purchases from other artists, avatars, and online scoring.

There’s three skill levels for each song and (I like this bit best) there’s multiple ways to get successfully to the finish line for each skill level. So if you’re bad at games like me, you aren’t stuck with just one thing to do at the easiest level! On the other hand if you’re really good at games, check out the Riddim Ribbon Launch Contest: Every day for 30 days, one Riddim Ribbon player wins the entire Black Eyed Peas catalog, which includes Behind the Front, Bridging the Gap, Elephunk, Monkey Business, and The E.N.D.! Then, one grand prize winner gets a pair of Beats By Dre Headphones! You win by posting the highest score (on any set) is the winner for that day. For more details, check out the Tapulous blog.

How Do I Use An iPhone Web App?

Using a web app with your iPhone or iPod Touch is easy – you just go to the web page for that app. The trick is knowing how to make the app appear on the main screen like other apps.

I’ll use a web app we just wrote about, Learn10, as the example. In the article we give the web app’s address as “http://m.learn10.com/”, but all you really need to type into Safari is the “m.learn10.com” part, like this:

Safari’s smart enough to assume the rest goes in there too, so now press “Go” to bring up the web page and see the words it’s showing today. Now we need to add the icon on our main iPhone or iPod Touch screen so instead of typing in the address you can open it like any other app. Press the plus sign at the bottom of the screen, as shown here:

It’s the same button you use to make a bookmark, except instead of selecting the “Add Bookmark” option that pops up, you’ll be selecting “Add To Home Screen”:

Now if you want, you can change the name that your web app has, in case the person who wrote it gave it a silly name. You can also see what icon it’s going to have but you can’t change the icon. Learn10 seems like a fine name to me so I’ll leave it the way it is. When you’re happy, press the “Add” button up in the top right hand corner:

And here we have it, the Learn10 web address showing up on the main screen just like all the other apps:

You can just open the app now like a regular app and, providing you’re connected to the web in some way, it will work perfectly.

For regular iPhone and iPod Touch Apps you purchase and download them from the iTunes App Store. You access the App Store from your iPhone or from iTunes on your computer and select and download the app you want. So what’s different about a web app?

You access a web app, also knows as a web application, by visiting a website on your iPhone. It will seem just like a regular app most of the time, but each time you use the app you’re actually visiting the web page. This means that if you have no web access (via wifi, 3G, etc.) you can’t use the app at all. When I turned off wifi on my iPod Touch and tried to access a web app it initially came up with the screen I’d last seen, then I got this rather unhelpful error message:

In the next tutorial post, I’ll show you how to add a web app to your main iPhone screen so you don’t have to open Mobile Safari and type in the app’s address to use it. Stay tuned!

Was your new year’s resolution about learning another language, by any chance?

Learn10 is designed for adult language learners, it aims to “give you a learning habit that’s hard to kick.” Amongst other modalities, they have a web app suitable for iPhone or iPod Touch users. They also offer a toolbar and screen saver for Windows users, and can be found on Twitter, Facebook, and other places.

Learn10 offer 15 different languages, and every day you will have 10 new words to learn. The words are taken from a list of the 1000 most commonly used words so they’re words you can use right away.

Yellow Pages NZ (or Yellow as they now known) are moving into the mobile space with a new iPhone app, which is looking pretty solid. To be honest there is not too much to write about – but in this case, that’s a good thing. It’s a business directory, you search, you find local businesses (based of course on your location through the GPS) and you call or get directions – what more do you want?

Sure you can save to favourites, you can view all on the map, you can email the details to a friend and such like, all you’d expect it too. It’s not in the App store just yet, but there is now a demo video on YouTube.

Skype coming to iPhone

One for the most anticipated iPhone Apps is set to launch tomorrow. Skype has confirmed that there VoIP client will be coming to the iPhone.

The as per usual the Skype application will allows free calls between Skype users but will charge for calls made to other numbers.

According to PC Pro “The iPhone version of Skype will allow customers to use their existing iPhone address book, rather than requiring them to duplicate. It will also allow customers to take a picture of themselves to use as their avatar.”

But there a few features missing such as video calling, SMS, and conference calling. But we here at iTalk Magazine think that this is a huge step forward and are eagerly looking forward to the release.
