I started my small firm last year. Now, we had a few clients and are working hard to find more clients. That is not in at the first stage, we only built the technologies. I have to care about sales and insurance. I cannot just focus on development. But that is the way I chose.

Opening Ceremony of Microsoft Innovation Centre in Brisbane

Last night, I was in the Opening Ceremony of Microsoft Innovation Centre in Brisbane. There are a number of startup companies, similar with mine being invited. I am very impressed there are that many of startup companies in Brisbane. There are more than a hundred people attended! Moreover, I got the impression from the people I met, the most of startup companies in Brisbane funded by the owners. That is different from US, getting the funding from VC. That is interesting.
Anyway, let's talk about the main point. Microsoft Innovation Centre in Brisbane is the first Microsoft Innovation Centre in Australia. It will be the hub for startup companies and provide the service to startup companies from their partner. Primary goal is helping the startup companies. They partnered with Universities, such as UQ and QUT, River City Lab, which is a co-working area provider and business services providers. That sounds it got a strong backup. I am forwarding to have more information about the services from Microsoft Innovation Centre. I really need some help to bring up my company.

FireBug in Server Side for .Net

Yesterday, I went to the QLD　MSDN User Group Meeting. One of presenters shows his opensource project, Glimpse. That is very very cool! This project is a Server Side version of FireBug in .Net. It will add a collapsible div at the bottom of page. In the div, all about the current request, including the server variable and session id, even MVC route. That is so cool! In addition, inside your code, you can add the track and the div will show them as well. Lastly, there is a remote tab inside this div. In the remote tab, you get the request information about the other clients which are on the same application. That is very helpful to mobile development. You can go into a page in the desktop and access the request information which is from the other mobile clients, rather than directly accessing them from a mobile device. I highly recommend to spend some time on learning this project!

Acer Iconia A500 has been upgraded to 4.0

I have upgraded Acer Iconia A500 to Android 4.0. That is easy! A500 will download the package and install for you. I am very happy about the upgrade! The interface is much much nicer. For example, those icons look more 3D. In addition, between actions, it has some fade-in and out effect. That is nicer. Moreover, I found the speed is improved. That is so great!

P.S. Please make AcerNidus and all acer related apps are the most updated version before you process the upgrade. This will make sure the upgrade process be smooth.

Experience!Experience!Experience! Not Just Functions

Recently, there are a lot of new software/hardware products release or about to release such as Galaxy SIII and Windows 8. They are mostly talking about the experience, such as you can use your voice to control your phone or how the new user interface is easy to use and delivery the context clearly. They are not talking how powerful hard specification or how faster can the software run. That is the sign for computer products are moving our engineer world to the general public. For us, they are care about the functions. They don't care about the packaging. Even they may be happy about using a command port if that is the most effective way to deliver the functions. But the general public, they care about design and whether they are easy to use. That is different. Thus, as a Software Engineer, they need to put more effort on user experience, just building functions.... The world is changed!

Budget Android Phone - Only HKD$1500

Two months ago, I was in Hong Kong, my friend showed me his china-made Android Phone. That is 5" screen with Android 2.3.4. That looks like Galaxy Note. But that is much cheaper, that is only HKD$1500. It got a big screen, that is very comfortable to read! That is good for watching youtube too! There is only one disadvantage, the CPU is too slow. It is only around 800 Mhz. But that is smooth and considering that is HKD$1500, we cannot ask for much. Moreover, it looks cool too! It has a white case.

Wow, that is such a good phone and value for money!

Google Drive

Google has launched Google Drive. This is Google Doc with the cloud drive. That is so cool. I can store my documents and files, and I edit them in my phone, android and pc. Moreover, I found that is cool to use Google doc in a tablet. I can do my work even I am away from my office. But that makes everywhere is a work place. That is a kind of stressful.
Lastly, Google has upgraded to the cloud storage to 5GB.

Windows 8 Boot Camp

I went to Windows 8 Boot Camp today. I got a lot of new information about Windows 8. First of all, Windows 8 is not just for desktop. It is for touch devices too and supports ARM CPU as well as Intel. I think Microsoft wants Windows to works in Tablet too!

Secondly, for making Windows works in touch devices, Metro UI is introduced in Windows. In old UI, that was trying to use abstract graphics as representation for physical object. Metro is completely different. This UI thinks in a digital way. It changes the way to operate Windows. There are not Windows in Metro. Instead of Tiles, Snap, App Bar, they are Context Oriented UI and is easier to operate in touch devices. At the start screen, there are a lot of square blocks which are Tiles. They will shows some information from apps to you. Snap is a lot of side bar which contains a stream of Information, such as Tweets. Also, Metro contains some new gestures to operate the system. For example, dragging the current screen to the bottom is to close the current apps. Well, those gestures are not just for the touch version, for mouse version as well. For example, using the mouse to click the top left corner means switching the apps. That is a bit hard to understand that.

Lastly, Windows 8 will integrate with MicrosoftID which is your live account. You need to login with MicrosoftID to enter Windows 8. In this way, you can bring your preference to different machines via logging with a same MicrosoftID. Also, if you wants to use Metro apps, you need to use MicrosoftID. All metro apps will get from Windows Store which is the Microsoft version apps store. This is very similar with getting mobile phone apps. You login to Windows Store with your MicrosoftID. Then you pick the app in the store. It will download the software package and install for you! This MicrosoftID concept makes Windows 8 works in a similar way as the current smart phone OS such as iOS and Android.

That is very exciting! That sounds we have an OS works in Desktop and mobile devices!

P.S. Windows 8 is still keeping the old desktop windows UI. In Start screen, that is a Tile calls Desktop. Clicking this tile, you can see a UI similar with Windows 7, but that is without "Start" button.
