Its great to be back blogging again! All this while I was busy with setting up few online businesses and super duper busy with my full time job. More on in the later blog posts.

Problem

Recently we had a lot of trouble sharing Project Schedules with client. Simply put, we are using Project 2010 and the client is using Project 2007. Though we save our project plan in 2007 (or even 2003) format within Project 2010, the client was unable to open .mpp files using Project 2007.

We get the following error message:

This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Office Project and a converter is needed to open it. Do you want to download the converter from the Microsoft Office Web site?

If you Click on the Yes button, you were taken to Microsoft Page with instructions for fixing Project 2003 compatibility issue. Clearly this is a bug with Microsoft Office Project 2007.

If you Click on the No button, you get another windows asking to install the latest project software! Very good up-selling technique here!!

I got my IT guys install both Project 2007 and Project 2010 on my work laptop and decided to fix this backward compatibility issue between Project 2007 and Project 2010.

A quick look on web showed few other guys having a similar trouble (http://forums.techarena.in/microsoft-project/1321653.htm). I was unable to find a solution straight on the web.

Solution

Finally I got to a solution to fix this issue.

The Project 2007 client you are using should be patched up to SP2.

Download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8230

Now open the project schedule within Project 2010 and save it as 2007 compatible. If you don’t have Project 2010 ask the one who sent you the project schedule to re-save it as 2007 file and send it back to you.

Open the newer .mpp file in Project 2007 and bob is uncle!

Search Stemming is a process where the endings of some words are stripped off to facilitate a search that returns results including related words, such as ‘kick’, ‘kicks’ ‘kicking’, ‘kicked’ etc. The default behaviour in the SharePoint UI is for stemming to be disabled.

Here is how to turn on Search Stemming in SharePoint 2010.

1. Go to Results.aspx on your Search Center and Edit the Page.

2. Edit the ‘Search Core Results’ web part.

3. Check the bx next to ‘Enable Search Term Stemming’ under ‘Results Query Options’

That’s it you will now see search results for related words.

In this year’s Tech.Ed, there is lot of mention about Cloud. Microsoft is definitely ‘all in’ on the cloud services front. I think IT industry is slowly drifting towards cloud computing. We at ConfigLabs strongly believe in Cloud Based services too.

In one of the sessions, this slide with different types of clouds caught my attention. Here the presenter from Hitachi presented a nice analysis of different clouds. The diagram below speaks for itself!

Here is some notes from Speakers slide deck:

Private: The cloud is located within a customers data center providing greater agility, time-to-market and time-to-value.

Hybrid: Data is moved to a trusted provider where certain data or applications are extended outside of their firewall and can be stored on a shared infrastructure with multi-tenant capabilities or it can be a provider that has dedicated infrastructure for each customer. The provider would have security practices and auditable processes.

Public: There is general access to data in a publicly hosted facility. Generally SLAs, security and data availability and durability can not be guaranteed. Additionally, you may not have visibility or audit-ability of your data once it’s inside the cloud.

Document Management features in SharePoint 2010

I am always interested in Document Management features of SharePoint. Back in MOSS (SharePoint 2007), though DM features are not bad they are very useful to the users. I see people really embrace Check-In/Check-Out feature a lot. But still in MOSS I believe there is lot of scope for improvement in Document Management Arena. Microsoft really heard the user/community feedback and gave us just wanted we wanted in SharePoint 2010. Checkout this video (link) presentation by Softlanding guys. Please note this presentation is done a beta version and few of the screens may not look same in RTM version.

SharePoint 2010 DM Presentation

In the coming days I will go through this features in more detail.

Thank You
