Blogger Templates: Terminator SCC

It has been a long time since my last blogger template, I`m sorry for that but life keeps me busy. Today`s template is worth being commercial but what the heck, here is it for free. This template is based on my favorite TV Show Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles which struggles at the moment for season 3. One way to support the show is to blog about it and here is the perfect template for Terminator Fans. There is no need of introduction

Inside the zip archive are the template : header, footer and background psd files for further customization.

To change the main navigation open the template in html view, copy the whole code into notepad or some other plain text editor, find the navi points and change to whatever you like.

Do the same with RSS feeds and change the link to your feed

As promissed here is a brand new blogger template I ported for you and it is a special one. As you can see on the picture it is a support template for the upcomming US President :) Barack Obama. This template realy kicks ass if you are in the support campain for Obama. There is not much to be said see it for your self.

Template setup:
Unzip the template and upload it in edit html view, if blogger pops an error out, delete all coockies, cache and other stuff from your browser, make a browser restart and try again.

To change the title find inside edit html view "Barack Obama on Blogger" and change to your blog title.

To change the description find inside edit htm view "Made by BloggerTemplates.Itmag.org" and change to your blog description.

To change the top navigation inside edit html find the slash "/" just before home and change the to your link do the same for the rest of navigation links, debates, election 08, issues, media and senate.

Well I have been crazy lazy those last weeks I`m sorry to all you who visit me every day seaching for new templates and layouts for blogger. Display PerformancingAds in Blogger Blogs

I should rather post new layouts for our most favourite blog platform but hey lets make some money first shall we ? Few days ago I reported about performancing ads a great new ads platform there was only one catch blogger does not allow php code and the only way to install the ads was using it.

Today I received a mail from Ryan Caldwell with good news. From now on you can start with performancing ads using this simple javascript code...

Ever since I had converted the Visionary template I was unhappy as it looked unfinished and had some bugs. Now for the second time I have looked trough the template code and made some improvements. First the tabbed menu supports now fully blogger widgets. Second I have added one more column to make it look better and I have cleaned up some mess in the css.

To change the navigation links and titles edit the template inside the edit html area of the administartion panel.

Here we go again with a brand new blogger template. This one is very simple and clean held perfectly for fast loading. It includes the brand new inline comment box code which you have to activate first (instructions here) and Ramani`s post summaries.

For installation instruction open read more. There are only few things you have to customize. The first is the top navigation. Inside the edit html mode find "recent articles" and change to whatever you would like to link to
Next to recent articles is a "#" sign replace it with an web link you would like to link to. Do the same for about us and contact us.

To activate post summaries you have to visit settings open formatting and inside the formatting box (very much on the bottom) paste this code :

How to add a comment form beneath your blog posts

Blogger have developed an inline (embedded) comment form which can be enabled through Blogger in Draft. This is probably the most requested feature for Blogger, and I'm sure many of you will want to use this straight away!

To enable inline comments for your Blogger powered blog, you need to log into your dashboard through Blogger in Draft. Then go to Settings>Comments and scroll down the page to see the new "Comment form placement" setting:

Check the radio setting for "Embedded below post" which will enable the display of the comment form below your blog posts.

If you have customized your template, you will need to make a small change to your template code for this comment form to display. But don't worry, it's a very simple customization to make!

Simply go to Layout>Edit HTML in your blog's dashboard and check the "Expand widget templates" box.

Then search for this section of code:

Now when you view a post page in your blog, you should see the new comment form in place!

If you don't see your comment form, make sure you have changed this setting through Blogger in Draft and have added your code in the correct place in your template.

You can see this comment form in action beneath this post. Using this comment form allows readers to comment using their Google account, OpenID, Name/URL and all of the settings previously available when using a pop-up or full page comment form (depending on the settings you have chosen).

I am very happy to see that Blogger have listened to our requests and have added this great functionality to our blogs. There are also some other new features added to Blogger in Draft including an improved posting page and import/export features which you can read about in the Blogger in Draft blog.

Export Your Blogger Blogs or Merge Multiple Blogs into One

Blogger has added an Import / Export feature in Blogger that lets you backup your blogger blogs to the local hard drive as an XML file.

The XML file will have all the articles that you have written plus the reader comments. Now WordPress too has an Import Blogger feature but it ignores the comments so this latest Blogger feature will prove very useful.

To export your blogger blog, go to http://draft.blogger.com, login with your Google Account and use the Export link from the Settings | Basic tab. This would just save your blog to a text file, the blog would still remain on Blogger as it is. Full instructions here.

If you chose to import this XML file into a new (or existing) Blogger blog, the new posts remain unpublished by default though you can also republish them as soon as Blogger is done importing the file.

Animated Blog Headlines Box

Would you like to create an animated headlines box for your blog headlines like the one below? It's easy and free to do this using a great tool I found at widgetbox.com. In this mini tutorial, I'll show you how to create one and include it in the sidebar of your blog.

First, you need to find the address for your blog feed. In most blogging platforms, this is usually displayed as a link somewhere in your blog's template (in Blogger templates for example, you'll find this at the bottom of your page). Alternatively you may be able to find the blog feed address in your settings or control panel. Right click the link and copy the shortcut if necessary.

Next, head over to the RSS Scroller page at Widgetbox.com. There are other RSS widgets available, but I've found this particular one to be the best free one available. You need to enter the site feed address (XML or RSS) in the box and will be presented with a preview of your ticker on the right. You can also change the colour of the ticker to suit your blog using hex values. I left the example above in the default colours, but you can change the colours to whatever you want.

Finally hit the "get widget" button to get the code needed for your blog platform. Many blog platforms are already supported and Widgetbox can insert the code into your page automatically (eg: Blogger, Typepad, Facebook). Alternatively, you can choose to simply "Get Widget Code" which will present you with two options: the flash embed or javascript formats. Simply copy and paste the code which works best for you. You can paste it into your blog's sidebar, or in a post (as seen above). If the Javascript code doesn't work well for your blog, try using the embed option instead.

Save your template/post and take a look at your blog's headlines, attractively presented in a free ticker: a great way to keep readers looking through your blog posts at what you've recently written!

Hack for better Google rankings

Google loves pages that have a good title stuffed with keywords. And some believe that Google even looks at the words contained in the filename of the webpage to measure it's relevance or importance.

Despite this fact, Google's Blogger users have absolutely no control on the filename of their blog posts. Blogger automatically derives the name from the title of the post - it just concatenates the first six words of the title separating each word with a hypen and also removes the common words like A or The.

For instance, if I create a new post titled "Yahoo! Desktop Search getting closer to X1", Blogger will store the file as yahoo-desktop-search-getting-closer-to.html. Notice that it even removed the exclaimation mark in the permalink.

Basic SEO understanding suggest that in the above case, the file name should contain keywords like "Yahoo", "Desktop Search", "X1" since the post is all about "Desktop Search" provided by Yahoo! and X1.

Since Blogger doesn't allow custom file names, here is a simple blogger hack:

1. Compose your Blogger article with a title containing all the keywords (6 is the limit) and in the right order (e.g. X1 Yahoo Desktop Search)

2. Publish your post on Blogger.

3. Now open the post in w.bloggar, an offline blog editing tool and change the page title to something more meaningful (e.g. Yahoo! Desktop Search getting closer to X1)

4. Click "Post & Publish". Congratulations! Your permalink filename is what you want it to be and no longer defined by Blogger.

There's another scenario - Say if you wrote a post on Monkeys an year ago and that article became very popular with lot of people linking to it. One day, you decide to add about Bananas in that same article so a page title "Monkeys and Bananas" makes more sense. But if you change the page title, Blogger will change your page URL or permalink - That would not be a good thing as people who have previously linked to that Monkeys page would no longer find it and there's little guarantee that search engines will index the new page. The above hack may save you here as well.

Simple way to hide Navigation Bar

This one has been discussed a lot. For my personal opinion I like the navigation bar right there where it is but if you want to hide it this is the way to do..

Open your template in html mode and paste this code somwhere in the css part of the template :

}

Follow these easy steps to paste the above code

Log in to your blogger account and select the Layout of the blog which you want to modify
Select the tab page Template and then click on Edit HTML
Search for the text body { in your template HTML code and paste the hack code snippet after the end of body { ... } element.
That's all. From now onwards your blog will not display navigation bar.

A tool every webmaster should call his own

Ever since I discovered nattyware pixie few years ago I fell in love with that tool. It was something I missed but did not know of it`s existence till the day I bought some of my monthly web design lecture and it was on the included cd. Long story short pixie is an easy to use, fast and tiny utility designed especially to fit the needs of Webmasters and Designers. Its a color picker that includes a mouse tracker. Run it, simply point to a color and it will tell you the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK and HSV values of that color. You can then use these values to reproduce the selected color in your favorite programs. Pixie will also show the current x y position of your mouse pointer. Its the only tool you'll need for working with colors.

Imagine how simple it is with this tool to find the correct color code inside the style.css file or the html code. Just point with your mouse over the website part you want to change, find the code inside the style.css and change it (this of course does not work with images as background).
