Last night, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed welcomed over 250 black mayors to the city of Atlanta by hosting a swank reception at City Hall as part of the 38th Annual Convention for the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM).

Attendees included Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, Jasmine Guy, Sacramento Mayor and former NBA point guard Kevin Johnson, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks, Mayor Michael Coleman of Columbus OH, NCBM President Robert Bowser (Mayor of East Orange, NJ),NCBM Exec Director Vanessa R. Williams, Stacii Jae Johnson (Director of Special Events, Office of Mayor Kasim Reed), Atlanta City Council President Caesar Mitchell, and City Councilman Kwanza Hall.

Spearheaded by Stacii Jae Johnson and her Special Events team in the Mayor's Office, the reception was designed to showcase Atlanta's signature hospitality. Food stations featuring cuisine from various Atlanta neighborhoods along the Beltline was set up around the room, which was enclosed by 50-foot screens flashing images of Atlanta landmarks. A towering cake -- designed by Denise Harrod and baked by Highland Bakery -- stood in the middle of the room and featured prominent ATL sites such as the new Hartsfield Jackson International Temrinal, The Atlanta Zoo, CNN, Spelman College, and Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Reception sponsors included the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Columbia Residential, Loop Capital Markets and Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP Attorneys at Law.

Food by Black Tie Catering, drinks served by The Perfect Bartender and sound/lighting/video by One Stop Productions.

The NCBM Convention continues through June 2 at the Marriott Atlanta Buckhead with appearances by Congressman John Conyers, Congressman John Lewis, Rev. Joseph Lowery and more.

Cast of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta + Promo

This summer, Vh1's hit series "Love and Hip Hop" gets a southern twist with the tales of struggle, love, and temptation in an all new season here in Hotlanta. Premiering June 18th at 8pm

Among the main characters in this 10-episode series are Stevie J, a three-time Grammy Award-Winning producer who has worked with artists such as Diddy, Jay-Z and Mariah Carey, Stevie's longtime girlfriend Mimi Faust, and a fiery up-and-coming Latina rapper named Joseline.

There's no shortage of drama with this strong-willed trio. Also featured are Lil Scrappy, best known for his 2006 smash hit, "Money in the Bank," his girlfriend Erica Dixon, and his mother, a former hustler known as "Momma Dee."

The hometown hero, Atlanta rapper Rasheeda, is still searching for that big hit after years in the hip hop game, but she's constantly at odds with her manager Kirk Frost -- who also happens to be her husband.

Rounding out the cast are the talented songbird K Michelle, and Trinidadian R&B singer Karlie Redd.

Atlanta is the new frontier in entertainment, the Dirty South, where the opportunity to make it big in the rap game is always one hustle away. Centered in the heart of the South, these fiery ladies and gentlemen aren't looking to lead the debutante life.

With aspiring songbirds and rappers in the mix, the stakes are high as competition is fierce in both professional and personal arenas.

Striving to leave their mark beyond the red clay of Georgia, hip hop's southern princes and princesses are allowing nothing to stand between them and making it big in the game.

An intimate group of media and music enthusiasts filled the private studio and lounge owned by legendary producer, Shakespere, to listen to records from Kalenna's first solo project, Chamber of Diaries, while sipping on complimentary Qream cocktails and catered bites provided by Zaxby's. Music executives Catherine Brewton, VP of Writer/Publisher Relations at BMI, and Universal Republic Executive Tab Nkhereanye, showed support for Kalenna, along with BET "Let's Stay Together" co-star Ron Reaco, producer/songwriter and RCA recording artist Bei Maejor, and singer/actor (Lincoln Heights) Mishon, while V-103's DJ Kash (also Kalenna's tour DJ) provided the soundtrack for the evening. Kalenna was also celebrating her BET Award nomination for Best Group, and performed a few songs with new artists Steelo Steezy and B. Simm from her mixtape for the guests in attendance. I've been following the lovely Kwajelyn on instagram for a while. One thing you can't deny is her effortless style. I was so happy she agreed to be on my site, So I can share her haute style with you. I was able to speak with the fashionista to see what inspires her awesome style.

Arkeedah: How would you describe your personal style?

Kwajelyn: I am a full on vintage addict. I love things from the fifties, seventies, and eighties most, but really anything that looks unique and not trendy. I try to avoid trends at all costs. I like interesting combinations that are not doing too much. I am often way overdressed, but I like to think that my clothes are my artistic expression.

Arkeedah: Where do you like to shop?

Kwajelyn: Value Village is my favorite store, but I shop pretty much exclusively at thrift and second hand stores. I can't stand malls. When I see a rack full of 50 copies of the same dress, it pretty much repulses me. I want whatever I have to be as unique as possible. But I also don't believe in paying a lot for vintage clothes, so I tend to avoid the places that up charge a lot. Everywhere I shop, I am looking for a "Thrift Store Miracle" -- that magical something, buried in the crap around it that is glorious and unique and special and fits perfectly and belongs in your life. A Thrift Store Miracle can appear anywhere if you are willing to look long and hard enough. Some other favorite shops: Poor Little Rich Girl, Rag-O-Rama, The Hip Zipper (Nashville, TN), any Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Arkeedah: What inspires your style?

Kwajelyn: I guess I have always wanted to be different. I felt as a kid that being the same as everyone else was like being invisible and I wanted to shine, and personal style was the way I did it. Probably the Leo in me. But not just in a vanity way, but also wanting to feel like I am my own person and not a copy of anyone else. My whole splendid self. My mother and younger brother also have very intimate relationships with personal style and it has been a bonding thing with us my whole life. I am inspired by lots -- other people, art, television, blogs, tumblr -- I soak it all up and put it into my clothes. Also, mood affects my clothes a lot. I sometimes try to counteract my mood with an amazing outfit, like from Hello, Dolly!

I also think money influences my style choices. I like making something out of nothing. I don't believe that the best place I can put $200 is on my feet, as pretty as the shoes may be. I think that you can be creative and thoughtful and make simple things look expensive with styling. Nothing I own cost more than $100 (except my patent leather Doc Martens, lol).

About the fabulous outfit I wore my Nappy Rutz earrings, a purple basic tee from Target, beautiful skirt from my favorite shopping spot Sherane's Vintage Closet , Marc Jacob bag with my Mix No 6 sandals. Here's one of my style secrets my bag is actually a lap top case, but I wear it as a clutch. Its big enough to carry everything tablet, makeup, etc ... I love it!

Memorial Day Weekend: Ford's Tips to a smarter, more fuel efficient weekend Escape!

Memorial Day marks the start of a busy travel season here in the Southeast. As thousands prepare to head to our region’s beautiful beaches and lakes, travelers should anticipate paying high prices at the fuel pump.

Here in the East, fuel economy is the number one purchase consideration of those shopping for a new vehicle. With this in mind, Ford engineers have been dedicated to crafting vehicles that maximize fuel efficiency and dependability and more so than ever before, dealers across the country are excited about the fuel efficient line-up that they are bringing to their customers.

But if you haven’t got behind the wheel of a Ford lately, today’s gas prices shouldn’t deter anyone from getting out on the roads this summer. Drivers can follow ten simple tips to conserve fuel, save money and help our environment.

1. Slow down and watch speed – Drive 55 miles per hour instead of 65 to save fuel. EPA estimates a 10-15 percent improvement in fuel economy by following this tip. Also, aim for a constant speed. Pumping the accelerator sends more fuel into the engine. Using cruise control whenever possible on the highway helps maintain speeds and conserve fuel.

2. Accelerate and brake smoothly – Accelerating smoothly from a stop and braking softly conserves fuel. Fast starts, weaving in and out of traffic and hard braking wastes fuel and wears out some of the car components, such as brakes and tires, more quickly. Maintain a safe distance between vehicles and anticipate traffic conditions to allow for more time to brake and accelerate gradually.

3. No idling – Today's engines don't need a warm up. Start the car immediately and gently drive away. Don't leave your car idling. Prolonged idling increases emissions and wastes fuel. Turn the engine off in non-traffic situations, such as at bank and fast food drive-up windows, when idling more than 30 seconds.

4. Check your tires – Keep tires properly inflated to the recommended tire pressure. This alone can reduce the average amount of fuel use by 3-4 percent. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel economy. They also wear more rapidly. Check the vehicle's door-post sticker for minimum cold tire inflation pressure.

5. Be kind to your vehicle – Maintain proper engine tune-up to keep vehicles running efficiently. Keep the wheels aligned. Wheels that are fighting each other waste fuel. Replace air filters as recommended. Use a fuel with good detergent additives to keep the vehicle engine clean and performing efficiently. Always consult the Owner's Manual for proper maintenance.

6. Travel light – Avoid piling a lot of luggage on the roof rack. The added frontal area reduces aerodynamics and will hurt fuel economy, reducing it by as much as 5 percent. Remove excess weight from the vehicle. Unnecessary weight, such as unneeded items in the trunk, makes the engine work harder and consumes more fuel.

7. Minimize use of heater and air conditioning – Use heating and air conditioning selectively to reduce the load on the engine. Decreasing your usage of the air conditioner when temperatures are above 80 degrees can help you save 10-15 percent of fuel. Use the vent setting as much as possible. Park in the shade to keep car cool and reduce the need for air conditioning.

8. Close windows at high speeds – Don't drive with the windows open unless your keep your speed under 50 mph. Driving with the windows open at highway speeds increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle and lowers fuel economy.

9. Choose the right oil – Use good quality oils with the viscosity grade recommended in the owner guide. Ford recommends SAE 5W-20 oil for most cars and trucks to provide the best fuel economy. Only oils "certified for gasoline engines" by the American Petroleum Institute (API) with the starburst symbol should be used.

Consolidate trips – Plan ahead to consolidate your trips. This will enable you to bypass congested routes and experience less idling.

At Ford they want all drivers to get the most out what this season has to offer. So pack your things, follow Ford’s eco-friendly driving tips, and get ready to cruise into a safe and memorable summer.

Tippi Shorter shares how to achieve Alicia Keys' Braided Updo from the Billboard Music Awards

Last year I had the opportunity to interview Tippi Shorter she is behind Alicia Key's flawless hairstyle that she rocked at the Billboard Music Awards and if you want to give this look a try. Tippi shares the step by step directions below...

1. Alicia Keys' hair was shampooed and conditioned with the smoothing collection from HAIR by Tippi Shorter.

2. Ojon Revitalizing Mist was used to detangle and protect the hair from the hot Vegas sun.

3. Her hair was blown smooth using the Brazilian Heat After Dark 1900 watt AC motor dryer.

4. Her hair was gathered in a high ponytail and secured with a bungee band.

5. Control pliable hairdressing wax from HAIR by Tippi Shorter was used to smooth the hair and prevent any flyaways.

6. Using a small amount of Control on her fingertips, she braided Alicia's ponytail, adding in pieces of human hair to make the braid bigger and then wrapped the braid around, crown-like, until she came up with the shape that Alicia "rocked" on the red carpet.

7. Baby bobby pins and finishing spray were used to secure the braid so it wouldn't move.

So my friend @ColdSummer83 asked me about La La's new line " Motives for La La" and I didn't know a lot of about it so I did some research and now after seeing some of the haute colors I must try it out!

Motives for La La, an extension of the award-winning Motives By Loren Ridinger cosmetics brand, includes mineral base lipsticks, blushes, lip shines and more.

I had the opportunity to speak with Stevie J at ATL live on the Park this past Tuesday. The Atlanta based producer originally from upstate New York is a jack of all trades musician, singer, record producer and songwriter. He is responsible for some of Bad Boy’s 90′s classics. Such as the debut of R&B quartet 112, Stevie produced their lead single "Only You" featuring Notorious B.I.G., and he also produced 80% of 112's debut album. Stevie J also produced the entire second album from The Notorious B.I.G.: Life After Death. Stevie J produced songs like "Mo Money Mo Problems", Nasty Boy", "Notorious Thugs" featuring Bone Thugs, "Another", "You're Nobody", and "Last Day" just to name a few of Biggie's classics. Now you can catch him working with the Magnificent 757’s and also he is apart of 'Love and Hip Hop' Atlanta which premieres on June 18 on VH1 at 8p. Stevie J shared some of his new artists, projects and more with me below!

Ford Motor Company Presents: Go Further Tour at Zoo Atlanta

Ford Motor Company “Go Further Tour” stopped in Atlanta today, Its one of the 19 national launch markets for the 2012 Focus Electric – Ford’s first zero-emissions, all-electric passenger car.

The Focus Electric and Escape with EcoBoost are part of Ford’s suite of fuel-efficient vehicles, each designed to give consumers the ultimate driving experience, put money back in driver’s pockets with reduced fuel costs and lessen environmental impact through reduced CO2 emissions.

I had the opportunity to drive the newly Ford Focus Electric and I only have one word for my experience AWESOME. During my test drive we started in the parking lot at Zoo Atlanta and toured the Grant Park area, since the car is all electric you can’t tell its on, the car notifies you in the dashboard area that its “ready to drive”

The Dashboard is amazing;

The MyFord Touch emotive instrument cluster provides a unique visual of blue butterflies on the right cluster screen, which represent the surplus range beyond the point of the next charging station. The more butterflies on the screen, the greater the surplus. In selecting this visual, Ford designers were inspired by the concept of the "butterfly effect," in which a small change can have an enormous impact. Before the test drive we had an informative session with City of Atlanta and Clean Cities Atlanta about the importance of having a clean green vehicle the cool thing about having a total electric car is the maintenance, you only have to get your battery checked and your tires rotated ONCE a year. How cool right?? Overall I learned a lot and had a blast driving Ford’s first zero-emissions, all electric car. We also had a chance to enjoy Zoo Atlanta as well! Fun times!
