Robocopy.exe utility incorrectly skips some files during the file copy or backup process in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008
KB2646454 is a post from: ITsVISTA

Consider the following scenario:

You use the Robocopy.exe utility to copy or backup files on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

The names of the files contain East Asian characters, for example Japanese characters.

In this scenario, some files may not be copied and the Robocopy.exe utility does not report an error.
Here is a sample scenario:

You have the following two files on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

?.txt (“chouon” character)

?.txt (“em dash” character)

-.txt (“en dash” character)

You try to copy these files to a destination folder by using the Robocopy.exe utility.

In this scenario, the Robocopy.exe utility incorrectly believes that their file names are identical and only one of the files is copied. Additionally, no error is reported.

Assume that you run a service which queries the Win32_StartupCommand Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.

In this situation, all loaded user profiles occasionally cannot be unloaded successfully after the WMI query is finished. If the number of unloaded user profiles keeps increasing, the system resources may be exhausted. For example, the virtual address control block (VACB) may be exhausted.

Here is a sample scenario:

You run a service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.

The service queries the Win32_QuickFixEngineering WMI class first.

The service then queries the Win32_StartupCommand WMI class.

In this scenario, all loaded user profiles cannot be unloaded. If you open the HKEY_USERS registry subtree by using an administrator account, you find that the user profiles are still loaded.

Note: You can obtain more information about the loaded user profiles from the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

MS12-005: Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows could allow remote code execution: January 10, 2012
KB2584146 is a post from: ITsVISTA

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Microsoft Office file containing a malicious embedded ClickOnce application. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Important for all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by changing the way that Windows Packager checks for unsafe files. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

Recommendation. The majority of customers have automatic updating enabled and will not need to take any action because this security update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually. For information about specific configuration options in automatic updating, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 294871.

Consider the following scenario:

You have a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2. The computer is a member of a domain.

You configure users to apply multiple Group Policy objects (GPOs) when they log on to the domain from the computer. For example, domain level policies, organization unit level policies or local computer policies.

These GPOs contain the following Group Policy, each with a different setting:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles\Limit profile size

In this scenario, the Profile Quota Manager tool (Proquota.exe) may receive incorrect profile quota settings. This behavior causes data loss if the incorrect quota size that is actually applied is too small.
