Three weeks ago I had a most horrific day. My main computer's hard drive failed. It was bound to happen some day, but unfortunately I had never really given it much thought.That day I thought long and hard about all the things I should have done prior to that tragic day.

All those external hard drives next to my desk were used primarily for archiving data that I didn't need wasting space on my PC. Looking back, I see how backwards that sounds. Back up useless stuff while only keeping ONE copy of the most vital files, graphics, financial data, etc.

Yes, I felt like an idiot when it appeared that around 50 GB of very important data was hopelessly lost while 200 GB of old pictures, insignificant documents from years back, and whatnot was nicely preserved on the external HD.

My new mantra is Back up! Back up! Back up! Duplicate, triplicate, quadracate (I don't think that's a word, but you get the point).

Fortunately, the good people at Complete Computing in Little Rock, Arkansas were successful at recovering my data. After several hours of dragging and dropping folders with gobs of data, I now have two local copies of everything. One on my PC's hard drive and the other on my shiny new Toshiba Canvio Plus 1TB External Hard Drive.

While the jury was still out on whether or not my data would be recovered, I began researching back up solutions so that I would never ever ever go through this again. That is when I came across Mozy (thanks for the recommendation Keith). From my research, it's the cheapest online storage service with unlimited storage capacity. How does $4.95 per month sound? It's even a bit cheaper if you pay for 1 or 2 years at a time.

If you haven't noticed, my preferred method for building websites is using the Joomla! Content Management System. After having built approximately 20 or so Joomla-powered websites, I have picked up a few tips and tricks here and there, largely from the incredibly friendly user-base of other Joomla! developers.

One such trick is adding CAPTCHA verification to the core Joomla! contact form.

Greg Henderson presented on Google Wave at the November 17th gathering of Refresh Central Arkansas.
