It’s the most wonderful
time of the year; the Apple World Wide Developer Conference is going down this
June! Rumors abound. We’ve sifted through all of them to give you an inkling of
what to expect when Apple opens its doors to those lucky enough to score a
ticket.

We can almost certainly
expect IOS 7 and OS X 10.9 to be announced. That means we’re looking at better
Safari, better built-in apps, and, presumably, better everything. It seems as
though OS X 10.9 will be an “iOSified” OS, so you’ll be looking at something
more like your mobile device. They’ve decided to bring the two closer together.
It makes sense that they’d buddy up; they have a lot in common. Next, Apple
went and bought a fingerprint
security company. While we don’t know anything for sure, it seems like new Apple products will incorporate a- you
guessed it- fingerprint security system.

Apple’s great at keeping
up with the joneses, so don’t be surprised to see a version of something
possibly called “iRadio,” their first music streaming radio program, a la
Spotify and Pandora. And since we’re talking new “iSomethings,” be on the
lookout for the “iWatch.” Apple’s new “smartwatch,” because smartphones,
computers, and mp3 players just weren’t enough (we know who though of the idea first though…).

Again, no one really, really knows exactly what to expect
until the Conference gets under way, but you could bet reasonably on some of
the stuff we mentioned here. kubxlab is eagerly awaiting the new releases. The
future is now! Well, it’s in June.

Music and Technology: Friends Since the Beginning

Music and technology have
always been synonymous with change. It’s
not often that two seemingly unrelated fields come
together as beautifully as music and technology do. There are a ton of ways
that technology has affected music, but we’re going to take a look at just three
main elements.

Production

Technology has made music
production an almost easy task. In
the old days, recording and producing music was hardly something that just anyone
could do. The phonograph was one of the first practical music recording
methods. From there it evolved into records, and then tapes, and now digital.
Today, most personal computers come with music recording software pre-loaded on
them.

Portability

One hundred years ago, you
could only listen to music live or at home on the radio. It wasn’t until the
1950’s when portable radios become more accessible. From there, the portable
music player timeline goes something like this: portable cassette player,
portable compact disc player, and mp3 player. The way we consume and transport
music on the go forever changed in 2001 when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPod to
the world. Today, iPods have high-definition screens, cameras, speakers, and
endless eye-catching iPod cases
to dress them in.

Styles and Genres

There’s no doubt that
evolving technology has shaped music genres, as we know it. For non-electric
instruments, the manufacturing processes improved and churned out higher
quality instruments. The guitar got electrified in the 1940’s and birthed a new
genre of music: Rock n’ Roll. Today, computers and software produce a lot of
the music you can hear on the radio. Think auto-tune.

Music is now, more than ever,
a child of creativity and technology. The possibilities are endless. Are you thinking virtual jam session? We
were too! Grab your ampjacket™ iPad mini case
and log on to www.jamwithchrome.com to play music live with your friends online.

music? Share with us below or sound

Good news! It’s easier than you think to become a
mix-master. Grab your favorite iDevice, throw on your ampjacket™, and get spinning.

The secret to successfully mixing songs lies in determining
the beats per minute (BPM) of the music. Most modern software and mixing suites
include the BPM of songs loaded into the software. In order to obtain the
smoothest transitions from song to song, the BPM’s of the songs need to be
creatively mixed together, which results in a flawless transition.

With the help of apps like djay shown above, you can begin
to master the art of mixing. djay accesses the music on your iPad mini allowing
you to spin tracks right on your device. The live mix is then played through
the iPad mini’s speakers and amplified with the ampjacket™ iPad mini case.
You can set up shop and DJ where speakers and other equipment might not be
available like a park, dorm room, or even in the car.

After some practice with mixing, effects, and types of
music, it’s all about experimentation. Experimenting with integrating different
genres and types of music can yield some pretty interesting results.

Time to Get Amped for Summer Music Festivals

Our team at kubxlab is very passionate about music and it's our love of music that brought our ampjacket iPhone 5 case to
life. Few things are better than listening to your favorite bands (especially
if they are pouring from your ampjacket-equipped iPhone) but nothing, absolutely nothing, beats live music!

In the spirit of the fast approaching festival season, we've created a list of our favorite festivals to hit this year.

Coachella – April 12-14 and 19-21 Indio, California.

Coachella is traditionally the
kickoff to the summer concert festival season. With its proximity to L.A.,
Coachella summons music lovers from around the globe.

Be sure to check out: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, Alt-J, Blur and Phoenix

Electric Daisy Carnival – May 17, 18 New York. June 21-23 Las
Vegas.

If you fancy EDM then EDC is THE electronic/dance music
festival for you. Last year EDC drew more than 300,000 people, making it
the largest electronic music festival in North America.

Be sure to check out: Nero, Flux Pavilion,
Skrillex, Deadmau5 and Afro Jack

Bonnaroo – June 13-16 Manchester,
Tennessee.

Bonnaroo captures the true spirit
of the outdoor music festival. Camping and bonding on grass fields are
mandatory. There’s nothing else like it.

Be sure to check out: Paul McCartney, Wu-Tang Clan, Tom Petty, Bjork, Purity Ring and Lord Huron

Lollapalooza – August 2-4 Chicago, Illinois.

Lollapalooza is one of the
original summer music festivals. It caters mostly to the alternative and
not-so-mainstream musical tastes. It’s unique flavor and variety can’t be
missed.

Be Sure to check out: The Postal Service (so excited they are back together!) Lana Del Rey, The Killers, Icona Pop and Father John Misty.

Honorable mentions go out to our favorite local festivals:

Osheaga Festival- August 2-4 Montreal, Quebec.

I've personally been to Osheaga 5 times and each year it gets better. Montreal on its own is a place everyone should visit, but Osheaga adds great music, perfect weather and poutine! Plus the festival itself is so chill that you can often find bands actually watching other bands in the crowd.

Be sure to check out: Kendrick Lamar, New Order, Hot Chip, Diamond Rings and MNDR.

The Arts and Crafts Field Trip- June 8th Toronto, Ontario.

This festival is only one day, but we hold it near and dear to our heart as it features mostly great Canadian (and Torontonian!) bands.

Be sure to check out: Every single band. Seriously, they are all amazing.

Of course if you can't hit these festivals due to monetary reasons, you can always snap on your ampjacket and stream Coachella live for you and your friends in the backyard. Coachella viewing party on iPad mini sounds pretty great to me!

On April 3,1973 the very first
cellphone call was made in Manhattan by Motorola engineer, Marty Cooper. Cooper
called then rival engineer, Joel Engel of Bell Labs. Marty said, “Joel, this is
Marty. I’m calling you from a cellphone, a real handheld portable cellphone.”
It’s hard to imagine that back then, and for most of the cellphone’s history, it
only did one thing: make calls.

Marty Cooper posing with an early cellphone. Image via
Engadget.

Today, making calls is pretty low on the list of things
people do with their smartphones. Gaming and social networking are the two top
uses for smartphones. What’s more is that people check their smartphones nearly
150 times a day. Do you think Marty Cooper had any idea that he had started a
technology and communication revolution when he invented the cellphone? We
can’t help but wonder what our ampjacket™ iPhone case would
look like if it were fitted for the original cellphone pictured above.

It’s easy to say that the true renaissance of the cellphone
came about in 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone. The iPhone was the
first true smartphone available on
the consumer level. iPhone helped launched a mini tech-economy with apps and
endless Apple accessories. One thing we
can expect for sure is that cellphone popularity and the rate at which it
continues to advance will not slow down anytime soon.

Today we salute Marty Cooper, who believe it or not, has never
actually owned a cellphone!

There’s something happening in Mountain View, California,
and it has the big four cell phone carriers on their heels. The rumors are
buzzing that Google is in “secret” talks with companies like Dish to launch its
very own wireless voice network. This is bad news for the likes of AT&T,
Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, because Google has the ability to outshine and
out-do just about any other company out there.

According to FCC filings, Google is planning on starting
initially with 50 base stations, or cell towers. Attached to the network will
be about 200 wireless devices to start, which will most likely be Google
powered Android smart phones. It’s unknown what the larger picture plans are
for a Google telephone network, but competitors and innovative product consumers
should take note; Google doesn’t mess around when it comes to implementing new
technology. Google Fiber is already launching in the mid-western United States
and is expected to give current ISP’s a run for their money, once anti-monopoly
suits are filed to release the death grip of their service areas. Continue

recently went hands on with ampjacket™ for iPhone 5. Aside from the “awesomely
funky” design, Scott immediately took note of the sound amplification qualities
of the ampjacket iPhone
5 case. He even made special note of the fact that ampjacket not only made
the iPhone 5’s sound louder, but arguably better, with no batteries or magic
required.

Scott also took note of the comfortable ergonomic design of
ampjacket, making it easy to hold in hand. As well as highlighting the
soft-feel material of the sound
amplifier, Scott was impressed with how lightweight ampjacket was, adding
almost no weight at all to his iPhone.

“Honestly, the unique design of the ampjacket is enough to really grab
anyone’s attention, but the passive amplifier is the real selling point… considering ampjacket is priced exactly the same as

General
Motors has found a way to bring Apple’s witty personal assistant Siri to their
cars. The Siri to Chevy integration will start with Chevy’s two newest and
smallest cars: the Chevy Spark and Sonic. Chevy is attempting to connect with “millennials”
or twenty-something’s who are in constant need of new
innovative products
and being connected to all things digital.

Siri will be
activated in the vehicle’s “infotainment” system with steering wheel buttons,
and will operate in what will be called “Siri in Eyes Free Mode.” The goal is
to achieve maximum Siri integration while causing minimum driver distraction.

Automakers Struggle to Keep Up with
Smartphone Technology

One of the
major reasons for Chevy to use phone-activated apps is that they don’t run the risk of developing their own innovative product
technology only to have it rendered outdated in a couple of years. Smartphone
technology is rapidly evolving and changing, so easily incorporating into
vehicles is a safer bet than vehicle manufacturers developing their own
systems. Siri integration will start with Chevy’s smaller cars, and eventually
work its way into more vehicle models as time goes on.

One of the
most exciting features is that even while inside the vehicles, Siri will
maintain most of the same functionality it has on Apple iPhones. “Siri in Eyes
Free Mode” will offer up safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity to
drivers of the Chevy Sonic and Spark.

We Handle Apple Accessories. Google Handles Self-Steering Cars… ?

While our focus remains on Apple
accessories and designing stylish and functional products for your iPhone,
iPad, and iPod, the engineers at tech giant, Google, have taken a leap and developed
a car that drives on its own!

The self-driving vehicle took several reporters around a
scenic tour of Washington, D.C. last year where it displayed its ability to
maneuver around obstacles, detect traffic signals, and parallel park like an
expert! The ride was so successful some reporters called it ‘boring.’

The self-steering feature is made possible by a wide array
of sensors placed around the vehicle. There are also three GPS-antennas located
in the car as well as a radar system and camera that can detect streetlights
and stop signs.

This is certainly an exciting development in technology, but
with much experimentation ahead. It’s going to take quite a few years to
perfect this technology, but there are definite benefits to a self-driving car.
Yet, with every new innovative
product comes speculation and in this case there will be many questions and
controversy around the liability of such a shift. Per CNN,
a fully automated car is still many years off.

think about a car that can drive itself? Would you be rushing down to the
dealership to order yours or do you prefer to be the real-life driver behind
the wheel? Hit us up on Facebook

our reliance on it to provide us with on-demand information. With the advent of
QR (quick response) codes, we are able to quickly scan a fun looking barcode

With
an iPod nano watch on your wrist, apps, music, and photos are
less than an arm’s length away. If you thought it couldn’t get any cooler, then
listen up, because the game has just changed! A tech startup out of London has
created a similar on-demand information delivery system, but using sounds
inaudible to human ears.

UntapTV, a new app created
by a startup by the same name, has launched what is sure to be the first app of
its kind. Unlike similar apps that “listen” to songs to
give you artist information, UntapTV listens to specially embedded sound
frequencies that the human ear cannot distinguish. This means that these
frequencies can be embedded into almost any type of deliverable audio: TV
shows, radio broadcasts, Internet videos, recorded songs, and even live
concerts. The noise will be delivered to users’ smartphones which will then
take them to web pages with artist information, lyrics, in-concert voting or
even product offers.

This
app has major potential to change the way we seek out and receive information,
especially considering that the inaudible noise triggers will not interrupt
whatever it is your listening to or watching.
