Yesterday I asked my Twitter followers for recommendations on where I could find some amazing and useful themes for Wordpress. Above is an image showing some of the responses I received.

This is another example of how much I enjoy using Twitter as a resource. Could I have simply searched Google for “Wordpress Themes?” Yes, and I already had. I wasn’t happy with the results because there’s too much information out there. It’s overwhelming. And it takes hours to filter through it all.

A better way is to ask my friends (my followers on Twitter) and get personal recommendations. Not only do they recommend themes, in some cases, they tell me about their personal experience using the theme. I’m not going to get that from Google (yet).

By the way, I discovered several Wordpress themes which I like, and by the end of the evening, I had nearly finished a quick redesign of both IzzyVideo.com and RollingRs.com.

It’s hard to sleep when I know that all of my video, from all my different shows, could forever disappear with just a small fire. I have 4 hard drives in my Mac Pro, and they’re nearly full of data, most of it video. Three terabytes of data. I also have external hard drives which I’ve been using to backup, but I’ve now arrived at that point where I no longer have room on my external drives, or on my internal hard drives.

I am almost out of space. I clearly need to go bigger. But that’s just part of my problem.

At the same time, I want to back up the data off site as well.

For the local backup solution, I’ve been looking at the Drobo with four individual terabyte drives in it. It’s an expensive solution though. All together, the package would run around $1,500 with all the drives in it. Still, most of the reviews rave about what a great backup tool the Drobo is. I can’t help salivate over the thought of the Drobo and Time Machine working in combination.

But what about the off site solution? At first I tried Mozy, an online service that would upload my data onto the internet, to store it “in the cloud” as it were. I started the backup, and after 3 days of uploading, I hadn’t even completed 1% of the data uploaded. At this rate, it would take more than a year to backup my one computer. That wasn’t feasible, so I canceled the service. Then I registered for JungleDisk which uses Amazon’s S3 service. At 15 cents per gigabyte, how could I go wrong? I started uploading, and at my upload rate, it was much faster than Mozy, but it was still going to take about 5 months. And, once you add up all the gigabytes, it was going to be an expensive solution as well. And that leaves me…

Well, I don’t know. I’m thinking that at this point, I’m better off simply copying my backups onto hard drives and storying them at a friend’s house. Maybe once per month we could swap. I’ll store their data, and they can store mine. I guess that means I’ll also have to secure my data with some sort of encryption.

What do you do for backup? Do you have any recommendations for me?

I was already short on spare time before I took on this project. Now it appears that I’m in way over my head.

My son, Blake, who is ten years old, told me that he wants to learn how to program computers. I thought I could probably help him because when I was his age, I did a little programming with Basic. In fact in elementary school, I was part of the Computer Club. I was a wiz with computers back then. I figured once a wiz, always a wiz. I was wrong.

It turns out that programming (anything useful anyway) takes a much higher level of programming language than Basic, and since we’re on Macs, we need to learn how to Program in Objective-C using a Cocoa framework, Xcode, and Interface Builder.

What does that last part mean? I don’t really know. It’s very, very confusing.

Rising to the challenge, I thought I could learn just enough to turn around and teach it to my son, so I bought a book called “Beginning Mac OS X Programming” and started studying it one chapter at a time. It seemed ideal. Both of us would end up learning it together. As the teacher, I would really learn it, because the best way to learn something is to teach it, right?

Now 150 pages into the book, I’m completely confused.

We covered variables and some basic conditional statements. And now we’re stumped. Rather, I’m stumped — which means he’s not getting much further. I feel bad for him because he wants to learn to program right now, and I can’t help him. I realize that there are probably classes out there, private tutors, maybe even audio/visual resources available for check out, which would cover the material in a way he would understand. I suppose we’ll start looking for those types of resources.

Lesson to be learned here? It’s difficult to teach something I’m clueless about.

Additional lesson? Research, then commit. :-)

Because of my relationships with other folks on the web, I’ve been discovering several new social networks lately. Although I’ve been signing up for all kinds of sites, some of them have stood out above the others. And they all are far superior to MySpace.

My favorite right now is Facebook. This is a social site that is all about relationships. It’s difficult to describe the benefits of using a site like this, without simply experiencing it. My favorite benefit is that I get to see what my friends are doing all the time. I love finding out what groups they’re joining, what new friends they’re approving, and my favorite updates are the status changes. Facebook has brilliant execution. Check out my profile and invite me to be friends, if you’re also on Facebook.

I’ve also enjoyed Virb. It’s another social network, probably the best looking one. It lets you customize the look of your profile page, and there are many attractive profiles. My profile is currently very basic, but you can still invite me to be friends if you want.

One website I think is very smart, but I haven’t spent a lot of time inside is Maya’s Mom. It’s a great site, with brilliant execution, but because I’m not very motherly (I wouldn’t even say I’m all that fatherly), I haven’t invested much time into getting to know the folks in there, which would explain my nearly blank profile.

This last one isn’t a social network. It’s a new kind of blog which is gaining in popularity called a tumblelog, and this one is hosted by Tumblr. I’ve assigned my own domain name to mine called Little Phenom. If you visit Little Phenom, you’ll see what a tumblelog is. The concept is that you quickly post photos, videos, quotes, links, and text items, without having to do a long elaborate post. I use it as a bookmarking tool. When I visit a site I like, I click on a bookmarklet in my browser called “Share on Tumblr” and the site is posted automatically on Little Phenom. Very cool, very fast, very well executed.

A normal person wouldn’t explore all these sites, I know, but keep in mind that these are just a portion of the ones I’ve joined. These are just the good ones.

My interests are shifting again. The subjects I study online have moved away from previous topics (podcasting, blogging, video) to mobile technology, specifically mobile text and group messaging.

So many companies are getting into this space, and I think they’re smart because soon the Myspace-type social networks will move off the web and into mobile devices like cellphones. User profiles, comments, and messaging are already there via new services like Twitter.

I think the one to watch is Groovr. I’m loving what they’re doing. Take a little Myspace, mix it with Twitter, add a couple new ingredients, and you get Groovr. This has everything it needs to be a huge success.

Check it out, and make sure you add me as a friend on Groovr!

I know my last post was a little vague. Here’s my dilemma, expressed with more specificity:

I have roughly 8,500 people who watch my Izzy Video episodes, and I want to be able to have a conversation with them. The problem is that podcasting is very one-sided. Mostly, it’s just me talking, via my videos and blog postings. For a viewer to talk back, they could leave a comment on a post, or send an email, or comment on MySpace, but I don’t like these options for a couple reasons: 1) They are far too singular; i.e. one email at a time, or one comment at a time is not the way to get to know an audience of 8,500 people; and 2) Text on a page lacks a face and voice; I need more than text on a page to begin building relationships. I need more of the human characterstics: face, voice, personality.

Shouldn’t there be a solution to this problem?

I’ve been brainstorming this, and here are some options I’ve pondered:

Have a conference where audience members from all over the world attend, and we have a chance to meet in person. This isn’t a realistic option for a number of reasons. Few people from the audience would attend because of the inherent costs, timing, various levels of interest, etc. Although I’d have a chance to meet people in person, and they could meet each other, we could do this maybe once per year, for a high cost, and once per year is not often enough to create relationships.

Get some gigantic conference calls started. I don’t even know if this is possible. Scheduled events like this have their strengths, but one major weakness is that they lack the natural organic qualities of a conversation which continues beyond the time restraints of a scheduled meeting. I want a solution where I can continue a conversation throughout a day, where everyone speaks with each other, and it would be perfect if we didn’t have to be in front of our computers to have it.

We could meet virtually, such as in Second Life. This is a great idea, if the entire audience were early-adopting geeks like myself, and if everyone had systems that could support it. I like the real time chat aspect of Second Life, and I like how it feels as if you’re meeting in a place, but I don’t think it’s the best way for my audience to communicate with me and with each other. However, one of the huge advantages is that through communicating via Second Life, you begin to feel like you’re getting to the know the person. My personal example is that I met Eric Rice in Second Life, many times, and we had in-depth conversations in the virtual world. Although I read his blog, and watched his videos, the conversation happened in Second Life. Much later, I met him at the Podcast Expo, and we spoke in person for a short time, but I definitely didn’t feel I was meeting him for the first time. I already knew him.

I could create an online forum. This is probably a good idea to get everyone talking to each other, but some of the problems are still there: 1) Just text on a page, so not the whole personality and 2) Only accessible in front of a computer.

Maybe we could use some new-fangled mobile technology that is similar to forums, but not bound to computers. Group text-messaging, group conference calls. Recorded voices responding to each other, all done via mobile phones. Phone conversations are a great way to communicate, and they could be in real time, recorded, and posted to websites like forums, so the information inside them becomes persistent. Hmm, now that would be interesting! But I don’t think it’s really invented yet.

So my question is this? Is this possible? Is there a better way?

Can I have a meaningful conversation with 8,500 people and really get to know everyone?

Probably not, but how close can I get to that?

I especially like the beauty of the comment system. It’s called “Lush” and it comes with every new Wordpress installation, so I know there are probably tens of thousands of people using the same one, but that’s okay with me. I still think it’s gorgeous.

The show was significantly better than I had imagined. The character development was excellent and authentic. The plots and subplots were interesting. The setting, a Seattle educational hospital, was foreign enough to cause ample amounts of fascination. The acting was superb. And the main character, Meredith Grey, was completely adorable.

Like millions of other people around the world, I am now hooked. I’m looking forward to playing catch-up on all the episodes between number one and the present.

It’s like I’m a super-hero living two different lives. During the day, I’m a Sales Manager with a Fortune 1000 company. In the evening, I’m online creating valuable content and giving it away, currently supported by Google Adsense revenue and donations.

My daytime job usually requires a 55+ hour work week. Also, I must balance my time to include an active spouse and three children, ages 9, 7, and 3. This doesn’t leave a lot of time for building a second income.

But here are the six reasons I spend time doing it anyway:

1. I can work on it anytime I want.

The flexibility with time is key. Everyone is busy — very busy — so why not build a side income that can take advantage of spare minutes in the early morning hours, in the late evening hours, and on weekends?

2. I can work on it wherever I want.

I have a MacBook Pro (a very powerful notebook computer) running OS X and Windows, and I have a Verizon Wireless internet card that allows me access to the internet from almost anywhere.

For example, during family visits to the park, as my children dangle upside-down on playground equipment, I bring my computer and work on my websites. In the past I would have simply brought a book or magazine to read, but now it’s my computer. It’s amazing really; my second income business is portable like a magazine. I also take my computer with me on business and personal trips out of town. Occasionally I’ll turn on the television in the hotel room, open my notebook, pop in the wireless card, and get to work creating the free content that gives people reason to come back to my websites. One thing is consistently true about business trips for me: I get plenty of downtime. Now I can put it to use.

3. It creates a reliable, increasing income stream.

Right now I’m only making a couple hundred dollars per month through Adsense, but I’ve noticed that it’s very consistent. Also, it gradually increases as more and more people discover my websites.

A few months ago, my daughter was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and while my family dealt with the changes associated with this, I didn’t work on my websites at all. I went several weeks without touching the sites. How much did my income decrease during that period? Zero! When you post an article (or, in my case, a podcast), and put Adsense next to it, it will produce income for as long as it’s available online. All the work I do now can continue to pay me forever.

4. The costs involved are very small.

My hosting provider is reliable, but inexpensive. I can spend $10 for a domain name, and $10 for a hosting service, and now I’m in business. I think of every new website as another division of my business. How many opportunities allow you to start a new division for $20. It’s almost absurd how low the costs are.

5. The barriers to entry are small.

It doesn’t require licensing, years of school, or any professional certification. I’m a sales manager who spent a few minutes in the morning, reading about HTML and CSS, and eventually got to the point where I could make my own websites. It’s not hard at all. Anybody can learn this stuff. It’s just that many people don’t even try.

6. Word spreads by links, online and off.

This is a powerful phenomenon. By focusing on creating good, valuable content, I benefit from audience members recommending my site to others. As of now when I’m writing this, when you google “video podcast” my Izzy Video website turns up in the top 10 results. This is because of all the links coming to me from high quality, highly authoritative websites such as Lifehacker and others.

Links online are valuable, but links offline are incredibly valuable as well. How does this happen? Just this morning, I received this email:

I own a video production company in Billings, MT and have made your tutorials mandatory viewing for my staff. Although two of my production guys have been shooting commercials for quite some time, their work has improved greatly as a result of your time and talents.

I’ve heard of teachers showing my video podcasts in schools. I’ve heard of people burning my videos on DVD’s and giving them to friends and family. Do I mind? Not at all. All my videos prominently display my web address, so they simply help drive more traffic to my website. And that’s where the Adsense is.

Hopefully you can see how with all these benefits, a busy person like myself might devote some time toward a project of this nature. I can’t think of an income source more flexible than building something online. But it’s not just flexible. It’s fun, challenging, and in many ways, addicting.

That is all.

We did something tonight we haven’t done in ages. The entire family sat together in our family room and watched a DVD. It’s been a long time since we’ve done that. I don’t even remember the last time.

The movie was Monster House, a new release on DVD. When I read the back in Best Buy, I took a risk and purchased it. At the top of the cover was “Two Very Big Thumbs Up!” from Ebert and Roeper, so I guess it wasn’t that much of a risk. My experience is that if a film gets two thumbs up, chances are pretty good I’m going to like it. I know not everyone feels the same way, but my own tastes luckily line up quite nicely with these famous film critics.

My goal was to select a movie that the entire family would enjoy, ranging from 3 years old to 34 years old. How’s that for a target audience?

Monster House was great for that. I was expecting the kids to hide their eyes during the scarier parts, but was pleasantly surprised to find them laughing.

I won’t spoil anything for those of you who haven’t seen it. It’s good. Really good. Go buy it. Your kids (and you) will love it.
