Fatality in Angels Landing

Heard that there's someone (identity unclear to me) fell off the Angels Landing and died today.

Not sure what caused the person to fell off, maybe he/she slipped, maybe the wind was too strong, maybe he/she didn't hold on firmly to the guiding chain.

May the person, male or female, American or non-American, rest in peace.

On April 26th, I hiked the Observation Point, one of Zion's classic trail/hike. Oh well, it's been more than a month hike and only now I am here blogging about it. Been having some activities if not otherwise lazy and stay in my room watching movies and whatnot. Left my blog stranded so I am now back again to write something.

Observation Point is a pretty good hike, good for all age except people who gives up easily. Unlike Angels Landing, Observation Point doesn't has any challenging parts or cliffs which can be fatal, so its suitable for everyone. The only challenging part is that the trail can be pretty steep at most part, so you will need a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated so to not cause your feet to cramp easily.

Day Hike: Yes
Distance: 8 miles round-trip
Average Hiking Time: 5 hours round-trip
Difficulty: The path is steep and gains elevation quickly, making it one of the most strenuous of the classic hikes in the park. If you have poor fitting shoes it can be quite painful on your toes on the return hike. Hikers that are use to Zion's steep downhill hikes know to lace their shoes tightly on the return to prevent your toes from constantly jamming into the end of your shoes.
Sun Exposure: Full sun.
Permits: Not needed.
Trail Conditions: Most of the trail is a hard surface. It is mostly in full sun and the steep downhill return can be hard on toes and knees. There are drop-offs at high elevations. Stay away from the edge of the trail and cliff edges.
Trailhead: Weeping Rock parking lot
Trailend: Same as trailhead
Trail Access: Usually from April 1st until October 30th Zion Canyon is accessed via the shuttle. Private cars are allowed in Zion Canyon the rest of the year. Park at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center to ride the shuttle and get off at the Weeping Rock shuttle stop. The rest of the year, when the shuttles are not operating, drive into the canyon and park at the Weeping Rock parking lot.
Off the Beaten Path: No
Classic Zion Hike: Yes
Best Season: Year-round as long as snow and ice are not present on the trail. In the winter the trail can become impassible due to ice. Get an early start in the hot summer months to take advantage of the western exposure and shade in the morning.
Elevation Gain: Long steep climb.
Peak: 6508 feet
Water Availability: Echo Canyon is an unreliable source, bring your own water.

Once you reached the peak, you get a glance of the Zion Lodge, you get to see Angels Landing too and whatnot, so its all pretty awesome!

Life in Zion Lodge

It is the 49th day I am in the states, or Zion Lodge, to be precise.

It is raining since yesterday evening, else it would have been sunny. Sunny isn't bad over here because of the low humidity. Back in Malaysia it will be as hot but with high humidity which means 30 seconds walk under the sun and you will be sweating mad. They say that it will get warmer and warmer over here as summer approaches. Luckily, I don't have to work under the sun. I am used to hot weather (from my country) but that doesn't means I need more of it!

Gonna have to start planning the itinerary of our travel at the end of the working period. We planned for which cities to go, but now it's time to be specific and plan which place to go in those cities we have planned!

Working as a busser tonight. I guess it's going to be a steady, if not slow, night. Till then, I will just chill in my room!

Angel's Landing

Last week, I went on a hike to Angel's Landing with my pal, Thunder, an American who said he came from the "states of everywhere".

Angel's Landing is one of the most famous hike when Zion National Park is in the frame, not to mention that its a thrilling and scary hike too!

Here's some information for your reference:

Day Hike: Yes
Distance: 5-miles
Average Hiking Time: 5 hours
Equipment: Map to locate the landmarks surrounding Angels Landing.
Difficulty: Strenuous uphill hike, but hiking is on a well maintained trail.
Sun Exposure: Full sun
Trail Usage: Heavy
Permits: Not required.
Trail Conditions: The first 2-miles are paved and well-maintained. Most of the path is sunny, but Refrigerator Canyon offers shade and often a cool breeze. This is a good early morning hike. Make sure to allow time to be off the trail by dark if starting late in the day. The last half-mile is across a narrow sandstone ridge. Anchored support chains are attached along some sections of the sheer fin. Sheer cliffs at high elevations while hiking on a narrow fin. Not suggested for children or those with a fear of heights. Avoid standing near the edge at all times! Do not hike the trail when it is wet, storming, or when high winds are present.
Trailhead: Grotto picnic area in Zion Canyon
Trailend: Same as trailhead
Trail Access: Usually from April 1st until October 30th Zion Canyon is accessed via the shuttle. Private cars are allowed in Zion Canyon the rest of the year. It took me about 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete the hike, including minor rest and a bit of sightseeing at the peak. It was breathtaking being at the top where you are able to have a glance at everything beneath you (except those higher mountains).

The beginning of the second half, which is actually the thrilling, freaky, scary and mind challenging part. They have this sign which warns you to be careful or you might fell off like a piece of rock which goes all the way down to more than 1000 ft and "splash".

And regarding why it has the name of Angel's Landing, it was said by the ancients to be almost impossible to reach to the peak that only an angel could reach it.

Snow in Zion Lodge

2 weeks ago, it was snowing in Zion Lodge. You probably wouldn't think its that much of a big deal but it was a big deal, snowing in the middle of April, which is Spring season!

We were expecting snow from the weather forecast, but it still surprised me when I woke up in the morning going to work and saw snow piling up everywhere.

Well, this one is actually of the patio of the dining room I am working at. The snows piled up more than 1 inch tall.

Went to Springdale that afternoon for a stroll, and it wasn't snowing there. Instead, a very cold and chilly breeze lingers around.

The sky looks awesome, the street looks quiet. This is Springdale, the small town before Zion National Park!

This marks the first and last time I ever touch and feel real snow. Or was it? No! I actually saw real snow again on my trip to Bryce Canyon a couple of days ago!

Zion's Emerald Pools Trail

A couple of weeks ago, I went on my first hike to Zion's Emerald Pools Trail. It was my off day and so I joined a couple of Thai friends on the hiking trip. It wasn't a very hard trail, as a matter of fact it is kind of simple. Though simple, I've got to say, the scenery is indeed mesmerizing and breathtaking! I was admiring the natural beauties along the way up.

Here's a bit of the information:

Trail Distance: 3 miles round-trip
Lower Pool: .6 miles one-way. 30 minutes. 69' ascent.
Middle Pools: 1 mile one-way. 1 hour. 150' ascent.
Upper Pool: 1.5 miles one-way. 1.5 hour. 350' ascent.
Kayenta Trail: 1 mile one-way. 1 hour. 150' ascent.
Accessible Trail: The lower pool only.
Trail Usage: Heavy in the summer. One of the three most used trails in the park.
Difficulty: Lower Pool - Easy. Middle Pool - Moderate. Upper Pool - Moderately Strenuous.
Sun Exposure: Full sun in most places.
Permits: Not needed
Trail Conditions: Well maintained. Paved lower trail. Dirt and rock, middle and upper trails.
Trailhead: Footbridge across the road from the Zion Lodge.
Trailend: Exiting on the Emerald Pools Trails leads to the Zion Lodge. The Kayenta Trail exit leads to the Grotto Picnic area.
Off the Beaten Path: No, this is a popular trail.
Classic Zion Hike: Yes
Elevation Gain: Lower Pool - 69'. Middle Pool - 150'. Upper Pool - 350'. Kayenta to Middle Pool - 150'.

First day working in Zion Lodge

Started working as a busser today. Met new American friend, Jacob, who taught me what a busser has to do and stuff. Breakfast time was really busy with people come and go, a lot of tables to clean and stuff like that. Nevertheless, everyone is nice, the servers appreciate our helps which is cool. Everything is cool as long as we don't make enemies!

Gonna go have some dinner later, play some basketball, and maybe call it a night because tomorrow is gonna be another busy day!

Second day in Zion Lodge

It's my off day today and tomorrow will be our orientation before we start working on Friday. It is confirmed, that I will be working as a busser. Know what's a busser? No? Me neither, not until today. Busser is, in a nice way, a cafe waiter servers' assistant, and in not so nice of a way, a table cleaner. But yeah, I will be cleaning the table of our Zion Lodge cafe!

Been a great day today. Spend the day walking, talking, snapping photos, played some basketball, met some new American as well as some new Thais. They are all nice people, or at least most of them.

Zion Lodge is a beautiful place! We will have our chance to go hiking or camping or other activities on our off days in the future, but for now, let's just hope I am able to earn plenty of money to get by :)

First day in Zion Lodge

Couldn't sleep well in Vegas airport last night.

Early this morning at 630am, we boarded the St George shuttle to St George, where we arrived at about 9am. We then went to have our breakfast at a Jimmy John's, a fast food style of sandwich cafe. These kind of meals like sandwich, it will take some times for me to get used to it.

Anyway, at about 1030, David, the HR of Zion Lodge came and pick us up, brought us on a short tour to several art galleries in St George while waiting for other work and travel participants. Apparently he's a fan of art. At about 12, those participants arrived, they are a group of Thais, 3 girls 1 guy. We departed to Zion Lodge at 1pm and arrived at 2pm.

The scenery of USA is truly mesmerizing! The architectures of Vegas, the mountains and cliffs along the roadside between Vegas and St George and also along the journey to Zion Lodge, they are all so beautiful! This is just like what every American that I encountered said about Zion Lodge, beautifully beautiful! Amazing even!

V Sion and I were assigned to a fully male dorm where we have to share bathroom with other tenants from other rooms. Those Thai and Moon got the coed dorm and rooms where they have bathroom in their own room. It got me envious but there's nothing I can do except trying to get used to this dorm style. It is inconvenient, like very inconvenient, but hope I can get used to it soon.

We were given briefings and David gave us off for one day rest tomorrow, orientation starts on Thursday and work should starts on Friday. Please take note that all the time I wrote here are USA time, and at my place it is -6 gst, 14 hours lagging behind Malaysia time.

That's all for today. I need a proper rest after this long long journey and lack lack of sleep. Blogging with my phone is tiring and I guess my writing topics will sometimes jump here and there, lack of proper editing, but well, that's the best I can do to update my blog and whatever readers about my adventure and experience in USA! Bear with me alright? ;)

Arrived in USA

After some transit and very long hours of air travel, I have finally arrived to Las Vegas, USA! If you have not been following, I am here in USA for this "work and travel USA" program. I am here in the airport waiting for many hours and finally in the morning I'll take a shuttle bus to a town called St George which is nearby to my working place, Zion Lodge. My employer will pick me up from there, and hopefully he remembers! :o

My first impression of USA is that it is very cold, not that I didn't know that, but to experience it first hand is altogether a different thing. I didn't step out into the open air much as I spent most of my times either on the plane or in the airport. Nevertheless, when I stepped outside and the cold breeze blows, man, can you fly! And you fly high!

Will be starting my work as a resort worker in Zion Lodge soon enough but haven't know in which department I will be assigned to. I hope it will be a pleasant experience! Will try to keep this blog updated whenever I can! Till then.

Work & Travel USA

I have just gotten my US visa approved as of yesterday!

I can now officially announced that I am leaving for USA for this "Work & Travel USA" program, applied through Speedwing.org. I will be leaving on Sunday night! Guys and girls who still follow my blog, contact me if you wish to hang out!

The company I will be working at is Zion Lodge, Xanterra Park & Resorts, located in Springdale, Utah. I will be working as a resort worker for 4 months plus 2 weeks of traveling in USA before I come back to Malaysia. Even the US visa interviewer who interviewed me was like: "So you will be working at Zion Lodge? Lucky you! Beautiful place!"

Talking about the US visa interview, I've got to say that I have been very lucky! The interviewer was asking for my Intrax job offer letter, which I didn't know it existed, not until that morning when I arrived at the US Consulate. I was hoping he wouldn't ask for it, but he did. Lucky me, Intrax have given me a card containing a bit of my details, which indirectly means Intrax has approved of me, and so the interviewer approved my US visa later on. My heart stopped literally for few seconds when he asked for it. My brain didn't stop working though, and that's how I figure out that this card might be my only way (where it turns out to be) out of that situation.

Although my interview time was appointed at 850AM, in the end it was 1030AM that the whole visa application process is over. There were too many process! First, you need to queue outside the consulate to report in and get a visitor pass, then you need to queue again for your turn to go in for the security check. After the security check then you will be inside the embassy. You will get a number which will get called 3 times. The first time is to submit all the necessary documents, the second time is to scan your finger prints and the last one, the interview! You will know whether your visa has been approved or refused right on the spot, and everyone in the room will be listening to your conversation! Tension eh?

I haven't start packing and preparing what's necessary so I think I will start doing in this couple of days!

Yes, I know. I have been absent for a very very long time.

Been very busy since October cause of my internship. Internship period ended but I am still working but going to quit *very soon* cause of *a plan* that I will reveal when all is confirmed.

Also, I am unofficially a graduate as I finished all the courses and credit hours required. All that's left is to wait for the certificate and convocation which should be somewhere August.

I'll be back to blog more frequently, I promise!

X Construction Lite is an Android game by CrossConstruct.

Build a bridge with the given amount of girders to let the train safely cross the valley.

This is a first demo. Please post a comment if you think it's too difficult or too easy.

There will be an update for the demo in a few weeks, including some new levels and wire ropes! Please be patient =)

This is a very challenging game especially the last level which I had a huge trouble trying to get through.

NAND Android on HTC HD2

Just awhile back, everyone can only rely on SD card to run Android ROM on HTC HD2 but recently and just recently, NAND-build has taken a great leap ahead.

NAND is a slower memory type (ROM) which is designed to hold data even after the phone is turned off. This is where your Windows Mobile operating system is stored, said Darkstone from XDA. Now that we can have Android on NAND, we can omit Windows Mobile from the phone altogether and use only Android! Of course, not everyone want just Android when some of them heavily relies on Windows.

So anyway, it has been 1 day since I start using Android on NAND. I am running this ROM RAFDROID HD 1.0 (3 Jan) which is made by a XDA forumer rafpigna. So far so good. Ringtones, wallpapers, everything is working fine. Even the HTCSense feature is working! I can friggin make my phone ring by just browsing to HTCSense website. It made me laugh out loud.

Running Android on HTC HD2

Not long ago, I was crazy about Android, then Nexus One, then HTC Desire HD, then Nexus S. Read here for what I am talking about.

The newly released (in Malaysia) HTC Desire HD

Guess what I bought? A HTC HD2 (Click here for full spec)! Oh well you can probably guess it from the title anyway. But yes, out of all 3 Android models mentioned above, I bought a HTC HD2 which isnt running Android OS at all. Instead it runs a Windows Mobile 6.5. Actually, the latest Windows Mobile available in the market now is Windows Mobile 7, and from here you can probably guess that HTC HD2 isnt the latest phone model out there (if you havent already know).

And guess what? I am currently running Android with HD2! Of course its not a surprise for those Android-fans out there but I am saying to those who didnt know.

Simple guide (by direct-linking to XDA) for those who wish to use Android on their HTC HD2:

First, you need to make sure what is your HD2 model, HTC HD2 or T-Mobile USA HD2? You can click the respective for a long guide on how to flash your HD2.

Here is another guide on how to install Android, which is quite detailed.

As of the last day of 2010, I am running Dutty Family ROM V12 (20/12/2010) as my Windows Mobile ROM while using Core Droid HD V0.4 (24/12/2010) as my Android ROM. I am using Android as my daily ROM and I am loving it! The battery life used to be horrible most probably due to the previous WinMo ROM I was using, and it is fabulous (at least acceptable) now that I am running Dutty! In standby (locked mode) the battery drain is minimal, although when in use it could suck the juice out of you real fast, mainly due to the big, very big, 4.3" screen!

Watching videos and movies is a boon with the 4.3" though. I used to play Dungeon Hunter on my sold-iPod-Touch, but now that I am playing it with my Android, I can really feel the difference of size! Android is an open source OS so a lot of applications are available to cover some unsatisfactory issue of your current Android which is quite cool. Entertainment wise, it is no way close to Apple's games database, but that's a trade you will have to choose here between Android or Apple.

HTC Desire HD and Nexus S Craze

Aloha! Its been a long time, I am pretty sure there are no readers left, but anyway, the mood to blog is back, and I am back!

For the past 2 months I have been working, and I am not really satisfy with the company. Not the job, but the company. We will talk about that some other times.

Anyway, more than a month ago a thread of wire suddenly sparked in my brain, and I started to crave for Android OS. What's an Android OS you ask? Its a mobile operating system developed by Google. Yes. Google. Just like Apple having its own iOS, Google developed this Android and for the past couple of years mobile company has started to adapt the OS. Just at this beginning of year 2010, Google in conjunction with HTC developed its self-branded Android smartphone, the Nexus One. It has not been a year and now here comes Nexus One's successor, the Samsung Nexus S! Or is it really worthy of being called the successor?

Here's the Nexus S's review by TechCrunch.com. It has only been officially announce yesterday, going on sale on 16th December 2010 in US. When will it arrive to other country? No one knows yet I guess, at least not us civilians.

Back to the story of me craving for Android. It was just a thought, maybe sparked by reading the newspaper advertising new Android phone from Huawei Ideos. I posted on facebook about Android, and a friend offered to sell me his Nexus One. That's when I started looking for reviews, and I found that the appearance of Nexus One is not to my liking. I then got attached to HTC Desire Z but the Z-hinge worries me for long term. For weeks I have been struggling which one to get, HTC Desire Z or HTC Desire HD. HTC Desire HD has a stunning 4.3" large screen which I like, but the battery life worries me too, according to various reviews.

Just when I have finally decided on HTC Desire HD yesterday, Google announced the release of Nexus S which got me hesitating for awhile. I like the design so much! Then again, after thinking for one day, I decided to go back to the HTC Desire HD. First off, I like HTC with their HTCSense, and while Nexus S looks stunningly beautiful, it is not enough to make me totally change my mind. Yes, Gingerbread (Android 2,3) is the latest Android which every Android-fans are dying for, but its going to take awhile to reach our shore and also spec-wise, its not so much for one to go crazy for yet as it is not much of a difference with most of the high-end Android phones nowadays. What majority are waiting to see though, is the dual-core processor pairing with Android. That, I will need to spend more time to research.

I cant wait to hold my upcoming new phone, the HTC Desire HD, and yet I do not know when I will be able to hold one. I will try to update my blog more often if possible. Till then!

The end of student life

Everything has an ending, and so, my tertiary student life in MMU Malacca has come to an end. Tomorrow, I am gonna be a slave to money, working for like-I-know-how-long-I-am-gonna-be-working. The good thing is, I am working at a company that is not that far from my hometown Banting, so I am able to travel back and forth to my home sweet home everyday. The bad thing? Imma work my butt off from Monday to Saturday, full time, which left me only Sunday for rest.

Future plan, I am thinking of going abroad to further studies. Field and destination? Undecided yet. I will think it through slowly. Initial planning is to go to German, or Japan, or US. There is another plan to work and travel in USA. Well, let's see which one choose me, instead of which one I choose.

Hi ya fellas, if there's still any reader left still following my blog after this one month of absence. Lack of update is explainable though - I was busy.

I was really busy, I swear. Of course I am busy with meeting and accompanying my girlfriend, but I was also busy with my final year project (FYP). I just submitted my FYP thesis last Wednesday, and I am even sure I did good. FYP is coming to and end though, by this last presentation I am gonna have this Friday. Wish me luck!

Also coming to an end is my study life. I have been studying since what, 2 or 3 years old? There was kindergarten, primary, secondary and now I am going to complete my tertiary, all at the blink of an eye. In about 1 month time, I am going to start working, no more student life! Heck, 6 full days a week! Wish me luck for this one too!

So I havent been writing about movies that much this year. I dont even understand it myself. I just, stopped. But now though, I wanna introduce you guys who are still following my blog about this new movie by Adam Sandler. Probably it wasnt that new anymore and maybe a lot of you has watched it already, but for those who havent, this is a very nice comedy! And heck, it reminds me, that I am going to really be a full grown up in terms of life, as I am leaving the path of education and stepping into the path of working life, soon, and very soon.

The movie is hilarious in a sarcastic but not really dirty way like a lot of movies nowadays. What misled me about the movie was the trailer though. From the trailer, I thought the movie is about the guys who acted childishly although they are all grown ups already. Turn out I was wrong. They are all grown ups alright, but its about them reminiscing their childhood moments. Yes, its full of funny lines and moves, so, watch it!

Spoilers: There are various of chicks in the movie. Tall, short, young old. Beware of the short one and the old one. LOL. That's all. I am out!

A very nice romance comedy!

Its a story about a normal guy with low self-esteem meets a perfect girl. And yes, got together with her. Its a very sweet and relaxingly funny movie.

Oh gosh I like romance comedy. I dont know why, I just like them =)

By the way, the movie has a lot of nice soundtracks too!

Oh yeah! Its another brilliant artwork by Pixar! I've always love Pixar's animation such as A Bug's Life, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and many more! All their animations are simply astounding and nice to watch!

Toy Story 3, being a 2nd sequel, isnt that bad at all! Although the story progress more or less is kinda same like the Toy Story 2 through introducing a few villains and the escaping, it still provides lotsa laughing points, from the beginning to the end. Well, maybe not the end, because the end is supposed to be touching.

Makes you wonder why you're not a toy =P

So anyway, totally recommended for animation lovers =)

Now that SUKMA XIII is over, I am gonna shift my focus to academic already.

Johor won the girl's and guy's basketball competition. They really played nicely, giving me top grade entertainment =)

Yes, FYP is gonna be my top priority now. I, dont care about anything other than that already, or at least I am trying.

A few movies that I am thinking of watching.. A-Team, Karate Kid, and of course my all time favourite, Toy Story 3!

Budget constraint, I am gonna hit them with student price, or not at all. =)

Today is the final day for SUKMA basketball competition.

For the girls' 3rd and 4th placing - Selangor vs Sarawak

For the guys' 3rd and 4th placing - Selangor vs KL Perak

For the girls' 1st and 2nd placing - Johor vs KL

For the guys' 1st and 2nd placing - Johor vs Melaka

I am gonna watch them all!

I am sad that Selangor guys and girls couldnt make it into final, especially the guys. I truly feel that they can win against Melaka last night, but well, Melaka team performed well too while Selangor guys, from my point of view, a few of them werent in top form, doing silly things, so.. yeah, they lost.

Never see KL and Johor guys play before so I am gonna see how they play today. I wish Melaka can win, yet I also wish they lost, so I can have a peace of mind and so that some people can shut their a-hole up.

Oh, and, GO GO CELTICS! You can triumph again! As of now Celtics is leading Lakers 45 to 36! GO GO CELTICS!
