Recently there are lots of talk on the sales of Android overtaking iPhone. Just recently HTC Evo is helping Sprint to catch up in terms of sales.

Personally after getting the iPhone in Feb 2010, I have been having heaps of fun using the OS, the touch interface, the availability of applications and games for all ages.

I don’t think I can ever go back to a non-smartphone, non-application supported mobile operating system.

However, even though the iPhone is able to handle all my demands of social media applications, mobile surfing and new games added to the App Store oh so often, I can’t help wondering how the Android experience would be.

So I was understandably excited when I realised that it’s possible to have a dual boot device! Video of the demonstration.

I could have the best of both worlds without getting two hardware! But that means I have to spend lots of time on jailbreaking, try to follow the steps done by David Wang, and in no way guarantee that I, a noob in hacking, will succeed.

Furthermore, a hacked Android OS may not provide the best experience as compared to a professionally assembled hardware. Perhaps when the hardware becomes more affordable in Singapore, I can get a second mobile device, done in Android.

So I got a chance to use the iPad today. Just for one night. What should I do with it?

I took a look at the app store. There aren’t as many apps made for iPad and even lesser free apps .

I tried a top free game at the moment, jirbobreak. Didn’t like it that much. Words for friends (iPad v) costs $2.99. I can’t buy as i dont have a valid credit card but I don’t think I am willingly to pay that much, right now.

Hubby tried Facebook but it was the iphone version. The original size was too small, and the enlarged version is a little pixelated but still workable.

Luckily word press has a iPad version and so here I am, blogging. (something I haven’t done in a while).

I haven’t found a comfortable natural position to sit and type with this thing with both fingers. Hubby was laughing at me trying to type with both hands as the ipad kept sliding down my thighs. He was going on about using one hand to hold and one hand to type. But that shouldn’t be the case, otherwise how is it functionable?

Still the object feels very smooth and i love the aluminum back. For simple tasks like social networking and surfing at home, it sure is useful. Not so if i have to do work like open multiple docs, browsers and IMs.

Will I get one when it’s available for international sales? Hmmm depends on when that will happen.

Ever since I bought an iPhone, Chloe has been fascinated and fixated by the touchscreen and its games. I taught her to swipe and now she’s having a field time scrolling through my many desktops. Clicking our apps and figuring how to play the games meant for adults.

It’s not the first time she has muddled with gadgets. Lord knows how many times she switched off the computer, our laptops while we were in the midst of using it. For a while, she was contented with pressing buttons on my PSP.

However, iPhone presents a very interactive, engaging and simple enough-to-use interface. Just one touch and she’s hooked.

Hence we set some boundaries for her when it comes to iPhone:

It was worrisome when she would snatch the device from our hands simply because she want to play. So we taught her to request for permission: “May I play games?”. She obey quite readily, for once. We have taught her the concept of asking permission but she never quite asked when she takes our stuff to play.</

We also tried to teach her that there’s a time and place to use it, similar to meals, sleep and play time. Say when we are walking to the car, in the car or in the mall, she would demand to use the iPhone and I would tell her she could only play when we are stationary. Or limit to a 30minutes use each time.

Of course that would only work if the adults follow the same set of rules. It should not be a case of “Do what I say and not what I do”. So far, we have been trying hard to comply with the same set of rules.

In this digital era, it is inevitable that kids are exposed to technology at a young age. It’s good to learn new things and these objects are going to be a part of their lives.

However, she has to learn to control her time spent on gadgets. There is still much going on out of the technology world. Kids still need to be learn how to write (with a pencil and not by stroking a glass panel), how to count with their fingers, how to play and share with others and how to read. Gadgets as such should not take up their entire time and energy at the expense of these other experiences.

Today I received Chris Brogan’s email and he wrote about “Success is made of little victories“. Doesn’t sound like his usual post and I was intrigued.

I glanced through it (while at work) and found it really meaningful. It’s inspiring, encouraging, which got me thinking what’s some of my little victories I had so far in 2010.

Early Jan 2010, I decided that we should get healthy and start eating homecooked food. After 2 years of hawker food, I was getting sick and tired of eating oily food all the time. I would deem this goal to be a success because 3 months since, we have been making weekly trips to the wet market to get fresh food. And cooking an average of 4 times a week.

Alright I have been cooking lesser and lesser because my domestic helper reaches home earlier and I reach home later.

I feel healthier as I am consuming lesser oil, more vegetables and healthier soup. I don’t get breakouts that often and generally feel better.

One of the small flags that I haven’t been doing too well is the consumption of supplements. I hate swallowing pills and can’t do it when I am rushing to get out of the house. I tried bringing them in my bag but I would forget about it. So shall work on eating the pills in the early morning.

In March 2010, I also wrote about Ninja Warrior TV show and it got me thinking to exericse regularly after a long hiatus. And I did! 4 times to the gym before I got the nasty ear infection.

Now that I have recovered, it’s time to resume the weekly gym routine. Maybe that will improve my immunity system.

Do you have anything to celebrate?
And now it’s too full for me to handle!

Emails I receive:

Airline offers, Zuji & other offline travel agents newsletters.

Online shopping – Rebonz latest temptation, various blogshops, Victoria Secrets.

Other random newsletters that absolutely add no value to my life

Professional newsletters – so many that I am unable to keep track.

I have to browse my gmail on consistently to view what’s the latest news entering my inbox. Typically I scan 10 lines and nothing beyond the first page.

I am a hoarder – I don’t delete emails quick enough.

I mean, I could be able to make that trip to Hong Kong. And I may refer to the promo email that gives me the cheapest airfare!

This makes me think real hard to revive my Google reader. So instead of keying my email addy each time I find an interesting site/blog, I should add it to my RSS reader.

Now, I just need to find time to sort through my emails, unsubscribe to content that no longer interests me, subscribe to those that I like via Reader, re-organise my Reader (I think mine is in a mess that’s why I stop using) and actually use it.

That’s the plan.

Mobile is different from web: how user navigates in the mobile and web space, where does the user use , what does the user need?

Mobile is good at places, spatial and temporal relationships.

Mobile is sympathetic to context.

Mobile design principles: design for partial attention and interruption, reduce cognitive load and opportunity cost.

Mobile is about pivoting people through information quickly. It’s about exposing possibilities.

Ever since Chloe enrolled into childcare, we have been sick TOGETHER. It can be exhausting because at night when I am sleeping, she would feel uncomfortable, cry for me and I would get up, comfort her, make sure she’s sleeping well again on her bed, climb into bed and try to return to sleep.

On good nights, that will happen 1-2 times.

On bad nights, that will happen 4-5 times, which was what happened on Monday night. Next day, Chloe was down with slight fever and flu. I woke up and found half of my hearing abilities gone.

After 4 days. Chloe is still coughing heaps, even while sleeping. Her nose is also still runny. No fever though.

My right ear is still blocked and pretty much in a vacuum. Seen another doctor today and hopefully the anti-biotics will work. Otherwise, I will need to visit ear specialist. Oh the trouble.

After setting up your personal site, you may want to think about driving traffic to your site. What’s the use of writing when the content is not searchable or available readily? Here’s how you can do that, simply:

1. Ensure that your blog settings isn’t set to ‘Private’
I wasn’t aware of this setting until I was getting puzzled over why there were no search results appearing when I googled ‘www.jacqis.net’.

In Wordpress, under ‘Settings’ –> ‘Privacy’, choose the option that says “I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers”. Otherwise, no matter what you do for the next few steps, your site is never going to appear on any search engines.

2. Ensure you submit your site at major search engines.
I registered my site at Google webmasters, Bing. There is some tweaking to be done at your site; so as to verify you are the site owner, if unclear, you can search for steps to using Google webmasters.

Or if all you want is to submit an URL, with no statistics to help you view your traffic, you can use the add url service by Google.

3. Spread your words via social media
Nowadays everyone has either a facebook, twitter and/or linkedin accounts. Place your website URL in the ‘About me’ section of each social media website. However, depending on the niche area of the social media website and your web content, you may not want to place a links in say, linkedin if you will be writing stuff that may deemed unprofessional.

There are heaps of articles on how you can broadcast your blog via facebook and twitter. For this site, I installed a WP to Twitter plugin which sends a tweet informing others of my new blog post. Quite niffy.

Next, set up your RSS feeds so that your readers can subscribe to your content. You can register your website at feedburner and it will pick up the rss feed from your domain. And place the icon on a visible corner of your website. I place mine on the right most column, just after the ‘About me’ paragraph.
———————————————————————————————————–
That’s about as simple as setting up the ‘mechanics’ to driving traffic to your site. I tried to be as generic as possible as not everyone will be using wordpress. Except for the wp plugin. Hope this guide is helpful in getting your content to your audience!
Besides, i want to create a list so that anyone who wants to create a personal branding site, is able to do so easily.

1. Decide if you want to get a domain name & server hosting
Ok, this step was done way before I begun working on the site. A year ago, I decided to go with a server hosting because I wanted to have unlimited storage for photos & video. If you decided that uploading to flickr or picasa will do for you, then all you need to think about is a domain name.

But if you do want to get a personal storage, then I would recommend Fatcow, my current host. Unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth for only US$66 a year. So far, they have been replying my enquires quickly (within 24 hours) and were pro-active to discount my renewal plan to such of a new sign-up.

Here’s a link to their current sign-up offer (affiliate link). US$66/year, inclusive of a free domain.

2. Decide on the CMS or Blogware
It was an easy choice for me. Fatcow came with Wordpress and I was dying to try wordpress (open-source plus heard wonderful things) for ages. Years ago, I was using movable but the installation was such a pain as I got to unzip the files using FTP manager, hit errors in installation, make sure folders were writable. Blah blah. Troublesome!

This time round, I only spent 15 minutes – figuring out where wordpress was in my control panel and another 5 mins to click ‘Install’ and complete installation. Fuss-free!

If you are looking for a free hosted blogging site like blogger, livejournal, wordpress, I will recommend wordpress. For its awesome amount of free themes and most of all, plugins.

So you have installed and you see a blue header and a Hello entry. What’s next?

3. Find a theme or template
I was pretty ambitious and started with The Morning After template (image) by The Master Plan. It was hard to customized and I wasn’t able nor ready to write a lot so the site looked pretty blank.

That was in october, and suddenly work became hectic, I fell sick, went China. And the site was silent, again.

So in Feb, when I restarted this mini project, I looked for a simpler template. In comparison, this template was much much easier to use. Activate it and my site works fine!

4. Prepare your ‘Description’, ‘About’ and ‘Disclaimer’ pages
The Disclaimer page is just to state that the opinions stated are personal and does not reflect the views of your company. Very important especially if you are in a technology/consumer electronic industry. You can google for samples of disclaimer, like I did.

The Description page is more of a concise statement of who you are and what you will writing about. Is it a personal blog or a site that will be discussing about a certain topic? Writing this will allow yourself to think and define this space.

About is really all about you. Any information that you would like to share with the readers about your past, present, portfolio, awards, anything. This helps to put a face to the site.

Alright, so that’s how I sat up this site using wordpress. Will write another post on the fluff – plugins, stats, social media elements.

It first appeared in April 2009, where Wired gave its take on the US$800 device. Gorgeous look – it should be due to the aluminum texture and feel. Ringtones of roaring engine of Porsche cars.
Phone capabilities are as normal – phone calling, connectivity, touchscreen. Gripes include inaccurate touchscreen, no email and knife-thin keypads.

From Asiaone, it said that the phone is selling for SG$2280 here. However, this phone is exclusive to owners of Porsche cars. For such a high price and its non-existent functionality of a smartphone, it can only cater to the rich who wants to have beautiful pieces to decorate their hands and pockets.
